As the title says, I am looking for a guild that likes to dabble in Roleplaying (I’ve never tried) as well as play the game for what it is and takes part in various content.

I mainly do PvE but like to dip into WvWvW and PvP on occasion.

Hope to see you in game!

Hey guys,

Steve Blum is still doing the voice of Rytlock in Guild Wars 2, including our trailers. Audio treatments are applied to his voice and it may sound different sometimes, but it’s still him. Just wanted to clarify that

Thanks for clarifying!

spike’s been pretty consistent with his grumbling..

rytlock’s first line sounds more like the voice in the trailer.. could be a fill in voice actor
or something /shrug

You’re right!

I remember thinking at the time that he sounded like he was on helium when he first spoke.

I’ve been thinking for a while that they should replace the VAs that they can’t contact as I really feel like Destiny’s Edge could be great in this game, but unfortunately, with their story only being told in the dungeons I feel that they have missed a trick with them.

I do hope they bring them more into future stories.

Ok I will repeat this once because I don’t think you read any of the comments:

1. The storyline for GW 2 regarding the dragons and their minions was written before Eye of the North released (Eye of the North was released to set up the events of GW2).

2. Eye of the North released BEFORE Mass Effect 1.

gee, i dunno.. an mmorpg with quests. . . how long have you been in tyria? you must be new here.. i mean, the resources it would take to cram scarlet, mordremoth, and the pale tree into orders missions.. it boggles the mind

Not really quests we’re suggesting here. If you played GW1 and saw the Zaishen challenges (which someone referred to up above) then it’s really more like that style of content.

In FFXIV you can do missions for your faction. These differ from quests in that they have an impact on elements of the game, allow you to gain specific rewards and add more to the world itself.

The quests in FFXIV are what NPCs dotted all over the world give out, and usually resort in you getting an item, killing some mobs, etc.

We’re differentiating between repeatable faction missions that can have a wider impact on the world (and can come in the form of say, raids or dungeons) and contribute more to the story, rather than simple errands for random npcs.

Just to be clear, this thread isn’t my roundabout way of suggesting raids (I’ve actually never played raid content in an MMO before and have not played WoW), but it did just occur to me that such content could later be implemented on top of the system being discussed here.

Mounts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lord Krilik.3692

Lord Krilik.3692

The thing is, most of these topics don’t ask for purely cosmetic mounts. They ask for the Waypoints to be taken out and mounts put in to replace the fast travel we have.

It’s certainly possible we may see a reduction in waypoints thanks to the current revelation that they are connected to the leylines.

We know that Taimi thinks she can tune them up to stop them being targeted by the vines, but this doesn’t mean she will succeed. The powers that rule Tyria may also feel that a “better to be safe than sorry” approach is needed and therefore may reduce the number of active waypoints.

This may then pave the way for mounts, although making mounts feel mandatory may also be a bad way to go. That said, some areas certainly are overpopulated with waypoints. Just look at how many are next to Ossencrest Climb, in the top left corner of Snowden Drifts!

“As a Thief I can stay underwater and fight pretty much anything with a Spear.”

Any one opponent. If you want to cleave multiple opponents you have to surrender your defense and risk getting hit through the block response. So the spear is a essentially a broken weapon as it either too good or too bad and never balanced.

I also used to find thief completely OP underwater. Before they increased the evade and stab skill to 7 initiative I used to solo champion sharks.

Thief is still pretty kick-kitten underwater though (Used to go 2 and 3v1 on the PvP map) but not as much as it used to be.

I love this idea! It would also be very cool to have a nice set of exotic gear similar to the dungeon type and would open up a reward system for those of us who prefer solo over organized group content. I mean I love some of the dungeon armor but that style of play is something I have never really enjoyed due to my crazy schedule and this could be an amazingly simple solution. Kudos Lord Krilik!

Are you suggesting perhaps a way to earn dungeon tokens soloing?

So some of the missions could be solo trips inside the dungeons and surrounding areas that also reward dungeon tokens, but perhaps reward slightly less and are generally quicker to do? (10 mins each?)

This is a neat idea. Personally, I’ve always felt that having some extra Order based objectives during open world events like Battle for LA or even a whole map like Dry Top would also be interesting both storywise and gameplay. It’s something I hope we’ll have time to touch on the future.

Mass Effect:
1. Reapers awaken every 50000 years to consume life
2. Player experiences a vision of the reapers from a beacon (which he inadvertently triggered to save Ashley)
3. Player builds a multi-species coalition to fight reapers

Guild Wars 2:
1. Dragons awaken every 10000 years to consume magic
2. Player experiences a vision of dragons from Omadd’s machine (which he inadvertently triggered to save Taimi)
3. Player builds a multi-species Pact to fight dragons

I think anyone that saw the new cutscene from the most recent episode (that also played Mass Effect) instantly got a flashback to Commander Shepard. At first I thought that the writing got marginally better (compared to season one), but come on… now they’re blatantly ripping off another game with a threadbare plot to begin with?

Crucial Info

Eye of the North released in August 31st 2007

Mass Effect 1 released November 20th 2007

Guild Wars Eye of the North Plotline

Destroyers awaken every 10,000 years (Because they are lower minions of one of the Dragons).

Player sees vision of the destroyers in the pool within the Eye of the North (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chk3LwQ4s3Q)

Player unites races against the destroyers.

Conclusion

Arenanet did not rip off Mass Effect.

EDIT: Additional Info to make it even juicier

“The Destroyers are fiery, mindless creatures who are controlled through a hive-like mind by the Great Destroyer. Dwarven legends say that they are the heralds of the Great Destroyer and that their purpose is to clear Tyria of all life in order to prepare for their master’s final arrival. Although it was originally believed that the Great Destroyer is their master, they are ultimately subjects of the Elder Dragon Primordus.”

Link: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Destroyer

Very similar to the reapers. They even have similarities to the collectors and reapers in physical design (http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Reaper).

Even better coclusion

Mass Effect ripped off Eye of the North?

Of course they were clearly in production at the same time, so neither ripped the other off. The most likely story is that this is a coincidence. This is certainly not the first time such a story has been done.

Further to this. Art appears to move in trends. A good, recent example is the releases of Guild Wars 2, Dragon Age and Skyrim all happening within a short space of time. (2011-2012). Considering the lengthy development times we cannot assume they copied one-another.

We CAN assume that there was some forecasting and external influences (2012 was the year of the dragon) that inevitably lead to this trend. Anyone who has studied Psychology could explain to you that this is how people work. We are horribly influenced by our environments without necessarily realizing it, to the point where we all come up with the same ideas and do the same things while believing we are completely individual.

Fun stuff.

They could do branching dialogue and player choices without tying it to the personality system. At this point, unless ANet has some big plans for it, I think it’s still better to hold it back for now. Since it was never really implemented into anything significant, and has now been hidden from the interface for a while, I’m sure there are a number of players who don’t even remember what their personality status was.

I used to hope Personal Story would make a comeback to progress the “main plot,” as it had a lot of good qualities to it: choosing a course of action that determines the next mission, joining an Order, branching dialogue, developing a custom narrative for your character. Since the Living Story is now the vehicle for advancing the plot, it would be nice if it found a way to integrate some version of these things.

They already showed a glimpse of this in the last release where we were able to choose whether Rox or Braham accompanied us near Concordia.

I suspect we will be seeing more choices like this as they grow their confidence with it.

You must be new. The Forum Search feature hasn’t worked in ages. Lol. I know when it was removed. When the Hero Panel was updated. I don’t remember the Devs addressing it, though.

No not new, I just don’t post on the forums very often.

They mentioned the reason they decided to do away with it was because it was hard to have branching personality elements in the living world when they were still trying to work out how they can fit the story around the player.

They also wanted to rename the critical damage trait and the only word they could come up with that felt right to them was Ferocity. As this was already in use by the personality system they decided to simply remove it from the UI and replace it with the new trait.

Ultimately the system added very little as it was never fully developed, but they could ease it back in and build on it over time now that the living world’s story is instanced and allows for slight branching in the storyline.

If I manage to find the post I’ll link it.

On one hand, I like the idea… but I wonder if that’s really how the devs want to proceed from a lore perspective.

While you ARE a member of an order, I kinda got the feeling that by the time Zhaitan falls you were kinda “above” that, whatever order you chose understood you had a bigger responsibility.

It’s a great idea, don’t get me wrong, and I would LOVE for the orders to get more play beyond the background they are currently, I just don’t know if that’s a sort of direction Arena.net would entertain going.

But I suppose it doesn’t hurt to ask and find out. I’d support it for one.

Well they recently said that we are simply one commander among many, so i don’t think it would matter too much because we are clearly equalled in rank by other unannounced members (they were more than likely referencing other players).

In this regard, they could always have the Orders missions as something you gain once you become a commander in the pact. The Orders story missions already have you going on missions for your order, so this would basically be a way of extending your connection to your order once the pact is formed.

On the other hand, it could be something you are required to complete your personal story for – that way they can say that the pact has now split back to their general duties investigating the dragons and these missions contribute to that.

What about missions that overlap as well?

For example, the orders could unite to explore a cave within a stronghold of some type. The Whispers could have an objective to sneak in open the gates. The Vigil could then be tasked with fighting off the main forces once the gates are open. The priory could have an objective to gather artifacts within the cave.

It’s a basic thought that needs more fleshing out but it would be really fun to see this kind of interaction between the Orders in the Pact.

The great thing is they can add new missions along with Living World releases.

For example, new maps means new areas to explore (Priory) or villages to defend/ outposts to claim (Vigil), or people to manipulate (Whispers).

It would also mean the Orders remain integral to the story.

I don’t think it was actually done away with in the first place. Personality dialogue still exists and new characters still pick a personality trait on creation. But it would be nice to see an official statement on its removal from the hero screen, as well as more bearing in-game.

They did state previously that they decided to stop advancing it. The dialogue wasn’t removed, nor the selection at character creation, because it would take too much work.

When they changed Critical Damage to Ferocity they removed the personality from the Hero panel and stopped adding new personality-based dialogue.

Lord Krilik.3692

The new delivery style of the Living World supports the inclusion of personality-based dialogue options because the story is now told through instancing.

The last release allowed us to select whether we brought Rox or Braham with us, meaning player choice can now be implemented. It would be easy to also include optional dialogue through the personality system.

Simply rename the “Ferocity” personality trait to “Aggression” or and away we go…

It’s a simple suggestion, but I’d like to see special missions and rewards added to the game that you complete specifically for your order.

These could be repeatable and rely on a token reward system (Dungeons) or point system (Karma).

In the first instance, the token could be badges related to your Order.

In the second they could be “Honor” or something to that effect.

The missions can be a mixture of solo and group ones and can place you in instances with other members of your Order. Examples could be defending outposts (Vigil), subterfuge and assassination (Whispers) and exploration/experimentation (Priory).

Think Guild content (exploration, missions, rush, etc) but for the Orders.

This would be especially rewarding from a lore perspective and for Guilds who form based on their Orders for roleplaying.

The LFG BETA

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lord Krilik.3692

Just a quick suggestion as a small event annoyed me earlier. There I was, making a LFM for Sorrows Embrace speedrun, asking for specific classes… the people then join with classes I didn’t ask for and proceed to kick me for wanting other classes played. I believe there should be a party leader system that dictates the group, allowing players to be kicked without asking others and also preventing them from being kicked so stupid stuff like that doesn’t happen. May I also suggest that you implement a mechanic that allows people to look for certain classes within the LFG?… that would help a lot and prevent the wrong classes joining and making trouble.

Seriously, whats the point in requiring something if other people are just going to ignore that and then kick you from your own lfg making you have to look again and set up the whole LFG system once more, it gets on my nerves.

My wants for the party system:

1. The leader opens the instance. I absolutely detest when I create a LFG and someone else opens the instance, just to have them randomly quit mid-way and it closes. (To circumvent this, I have to open the instance before seeking party members – sometimes I forget).

2. The instances simply find a new owner. (ANET will probably moan about their bad tech like they always do, so see point 1 for a workaround)

3. The leader cannot be kicked. If you don’t like your group, form a coup and leave together. this also synergises well with point 1.

I think it’s more that they’re wanting to overhaul it in the future but at the moment they’ve got other things they’re working on.

From what I’ve seen of ANet they typically don’t abandon things they’ve created. They get wavering attention but they always revisit it at some point.

I’m not sure I’m seeing the same trend as you. They removed Tengu and Polearms with no real hints toward them returning.

They removed the personality system even though they have now found a way to deliver the living story in a more personal and customisable way (therefore more supportive of the personality system developing).

They appear to be removing Underwater elements in the same way as the personality system (It’s still there for the older content, but future stuff won’t include it)…

The thing about the underwater stuff is that it’s a much, much larger part of the game than the personality system, so would be such a huge loss if they stopped developing it.

I really hope they don’t phase out underwater combat. That would require a huge overhaul of how we map complete frostgorge and a few other areas. I don’t see them ever doing it.

Just to be clear, I’m not suggesting they will go back and remove the UW PvE areas; that would definitely be far too much work, especially with the personal story having so many UW sections.

What I feel they may be doing instead is simply doing away with it going forward by not including any underwater elements or weapon skins in future content.

If this IS true then it’s a huge disappointment. I really don’t think UW combat is THAT bad that it would simply need to be dropped. It is one of the key features that makes this game stand out.

Underwater combat was such an integral part of the core game and some of the most fascinating and impressive areas to explore are underwater. It also provide a great excursion from land combat due to the significantly different tactical elements involved.

Of course, we’re all aware that some balance was still required to really make it work. Traits weren’t properly geared for both land and water, many skills that traits affect are completely unavailable and with no way to set your build before jumping in it can wind you up in a difficult situation. Then there was the mob layouts, the lack of aqua breathers, etc…

The main concern is that ANET appears to be simply phasing it out rather than fixing the issues. We first had the large water area replaced in WvWvW, then the removal of the PvP map, and now the latest weapon skins (leyline) do not have underwater versions.

I think most of the community would be in agreement that we would rather ANET was open about where they are heading regarding underwater combat, rather than simply ghosting it out with no customer engagement.

What does this mean for underwater legendaries? What does this mean for the Largos?
Does this mean no underwater areas when we finally meet “bubbles”?

It really would be a shame to lose such a large part of the core experience when it’s just on the edge of working…

Haha! Well I suppose he sort of is filling that spot. I wasn’t sure where to put this suggestion since the old forum has gone, but I can’t shake the feeling that giving everyone’s favourite robot a wife-bot would be the cherry on top of a well-iced cake that is his character.

He is such a sassy character in his own right but just imagine if he were to meet his match in the form of another, female-programmed robot with an attitude equally as un-caring as his own.

I realise it’s very late to suggest this now, but I thought it would be funny if the new robot happened to be owned by none other than Scarlet as an assistant to carry out her evil biddings. Hobo-tron would fall in love with the new robot and the eventual defeat of her master would leave this new robot in a similar situation as that which made job-o-tron become the hobo he is now. I’m sure Anet could work out the rest from there.

I know it’s a bit of a weird thing to suggest, but for some reason the idea just popped into my head and now I can’t seem to shake it.

Constructive criticism is organized, grammatically correct, emotionally neutral, and usually with a tldr; version at the bottom capitalizing on key points. If OP goes back and revises his post to be more calm. I certainly will hear him out.

You’ve spent far more time arguing your empty case than it would have taken to just read the post. Not only this, but your own expectation is rather moot when you consider that every other person in this thread read his points and agree with him in a respectful manner. Don’t be so superior about it. If you can’t be bothered to read it because you don’t like it’s format, don’t bother posting. It’s the same logic as “if you don’t like the mini-game, don’t play it”.

Well done though OP. You’ve identified some legitimate issues. We absolutely SHOULD be giving feedback on any issues we encounter in content. Anet even ask for that….

You shouldn’t be able to die upon spawn in a game like this anyway. Whenever that happens in a PvP game it usually gets fixed later on. It’s particularly important in online games because a system like this needs to compensate for individual latency issues. It means people can at least spawn and try the game even if their net speed is not quite as good as others. Considering the game will stay around as a permanent-ish addition, I’m sure they will look at balance such as spawn locations, invulnerability on spawn (Coupled with actions being on cooldown), enemy spawns etc. Also that one-shot might be revised a little but who knows? They will need more feedback like this to improve the system.

Well that certainly took a nose-dive. I thought you and I were having a pleasant discussion over that matter until now. Whatever. I did say I hope they take another look at this, and pointed out that I am aware they have made some excellent efforts to counteract poor balance and economy issues in the past.

We should all do well to remember that they have been trying everything they can to squeeze more money out of us in this manner though. I just wish they would realize it isn’t necessary. The players love the game so much already that they don’t need to be lured into compulsive lotteries; they are more than happy to spend on luxury items when they are available.

Ah yes, food, crafting mats, and equipment. Good point. Can’t believe I forgot that. Oh well, I’m still okay with this. I came from a very heavy buy-power game. So as long as we’re not doing that, I can live without an extra skin or two. And considering the fact that ArenaNet has an economist employed to monitor their virtual economy, I doubt it will become as extreme as you just said. They’ll put some ploy out to adjust the values of things, the people who hold wealth, etc etc…Remember how leather used to be worthless? Bing bang bong. Look at that, Zephyrites trade leather for Zephyr boxes. All of a sudden leather has some value again. What, did you just think that was a coincidence?

It’s a good point about the leather, except in this instance there is no other method unless they change it again. The keys must be purchased or earned through a really long-winded and repetitive method of recreating characters. Leather can be hunted, salvaged, bought with gold etc. I am hoping they make adjustments to this as it’s actually made the RNG complaints worse.

Well to be fair you can also get a full set of exotic armor with Karma. Also, decking your character in full exotics is not going to cost you much. Ascended on the other hand…

I tend to use laurels for ascended but of course those that use additional resources will take some gold to acquire (globs of ectoplasm). The new achievement chests have actually made them more acquirable though which is nice.

Question: Wouldn’t all those people scrambling for black lion keys inflate the price of gems on the TP? If you’re really in such dire need of gold…sell gems. kitten .

Furthermore, isn’t gold’s only purpose waypoints, harvesting tools, repairs, and skins? The first three are essentially free and thus irrelevant, the last one doesn’t affect player power. So if some people want to single-handedly fund this game by trying to hoard copious amounts of gold, I say let them. I’ll still thrash their slightly more pretty kitten in PvP 9 times out of 10.

And equipment. Buying exotics and whatnot.

Due to the focus on style over gear tiers the skins are exactly the thing we work for, assuming all our equipment is finally up to scratch. The problem is that to earn enough gold to buy one skin we would have to grind far more than if they were available like the previous RNG skins (for example, jade skins earn-able from drops).

This means rather than tackling the RNG issue everyone moaned about and making it more fair, they took the fact that we wanted to make them trade-able and handed the power to those with the money to spare. What they should have done is kept the same system and made those skins trade-able anyway, as their gold price wouldn’t inflate as much, or just got rid of RNG skin drops.

Previously, we could earn the tickets ourselves. Sure the odds were low and it was grindy, but this was more a balance issue than anything. Everyone hated it. They said “death to RNG” and Anet made this change. The problem is, yes the skins are now trade-able, but all we did is swap everyone being on a pretty even field and having the opportunity to earn them, to those with the money being able to buy them and exploit those without for large gold sums in game. They shifted the balance of power to the real life players who can afford it. This is wrong. They should have kept the more grindy, earn your skin type rng but made the skins trade-able as their value would not have been so high, or got rid of RNG altogether for these skins.

They camp spawn locations and inflate auction house prices which causes grief for the actual players.

You overestimate the impact bots have on the economy.

I was speaking in general terms about RMT, not specifically about GW2 as I was aware of the ways they combatted it. The point I have made is that A-net made great progress stamping out RMT activity and market manipulation, then turned around and handed it right to all the players willing to spend large amounts of caskittens.
