I hope the changes are actually positive for the longevity of GW 2 but with Anet’s track record I have my doubts

this is actually going against longevity as many players will decide to leave if they mess this up.

If they mess this up the frustration will lead players to other games which are in competition with GW2…so…let’s wait and see

Just be mindful of which publisher is putting out those games, if you care about where your money winds up.

I would think you could do all the story modes with 3 players, I don’t recall there being any requirement to have 5. Explorable modes are a different matter. You need at least 4 players to do any path in COE and 5 to do COF 1 because of the mechanics in the dungeons require that many players to progress forward.

TLDR: Guardians only have one profession mechanic condition damage source, is this a good thing? Since they only have one condition damage source and cannot proc a condition on critical hit why is Condition damage tied to Precision in Radiance rather than critical damage?

Condition Guardian and Radiance

I’m just curious as to why the only condition that guardians have access to is burning. We do get it with every 4th attack, but it’s the only condition that we can consistently do. Glacial Heart does inflict Chill but it has a long cool down, you have to trait 20 into Valor to access it and it only works with the Hammer. That’s a lot of circumstance to inflict Chill.

Every other profession has access to bleeds on auto attack with at least one weapon. Guardians do not, we also cannot inflict Poison or Torment either. Unless we supplement with sigils. I get the theatrics behind the Guardian, so maybe they shouldn’t inflict bleeds and poison it’s not what Paladin like classes would do. But what about Torment? It’s a new condition and I think it would suit a Guardian well. Maybe giving Guardians access to an additional condition would make them OP because of the built in burning we can proc, but because of this mechanic when it comes to condition damage we are held back.

If the only condition damage output Guardians can have access to is Burning then it would seem to me that our second Trait line Radiance is a bit of an anomaly. If you look at Warriors, Necromancers, and Engineers they all have the exact same set up as Guardians on their second trait line Precision and Condition Damage, but those three professions have bleed on critical hit minor traits available for spending 5 trait points. Guardians do not have have this trait yet we have condition damage tied to our critical chance. This set up seems off to me, shouldn’t Guardians trait set up follow that of Thieves, Mesmers, Rangers and Eles with Critical Damage being coupled with Precision? I think Condition damage in Valor would would be useful as that ties condition damage to toughness and a lot of condition damage builds work around attrition to be successful.

Justice is blind is a powerful tool that Guardians have so I’m not suggesting that be altered to a trait that inflicts a condition on crit but perhaps a new adept Major trait would be a good substitution here if Radiance must have Precision and Condition damage tied to it.

Am I missing a glaring balance issue; would Guardians become OP if we had another condition damage source or had Condition damage swapped out with Critical damage in Radiance?

What does it matter if it is called or comes in the traditional form of an ‘expansion’ as long as we receive the content? This confirms that everything we wanted out of an expansion will be given to us. Beyond that, who cares the means.

You’re arguing semantics: buy a movie online and get it shipped to you, or drive to the store and pick up the movie; regardless you still get a movie. I fail to see the point in this argument.

Because we got the exact same information with the last interview, and your post implied that they had confirmed an actual expansion, which isn’t true.

I think it’s interesting when people say that the LS has released the same amount of content in 1 year as the GW1 expansion did the 1st year.. it’s so laughably untrue I don’t know how they can say it with a strait face.

How can you even compare them? The LS has added (including the temp content) a tiny fraction of what we got in, say, Factions.. comparing the 2 is no contest.

You are aware that Faction (or Nightfall) weren’t expansions, right? They were standalone games, that could be played as standalone games.
If we are going to compare it to GW1 we should compare it to their only actual expansion, and that was Eye of the North, which came years after Prophecies was released, and didn’t have close to the stuff Faction and Nightfall did.

Even if you try to work into that angle, which I disagree with, because I’d still buy another stand alone game that could be played by itself or linked to GW2 which would expand upon the GW2 universe ergo it is an expansion. Yes that’s right I will pay good money for good content, the stuff they are doing with LW is free content for a reason.

Eye of the North the only expansion by your definition still provided way more content than LW has. On top of that all of EOTN is permanent repayable content that you can play at your own pace, because it was so robust they didn’t need to gate the content in two week increments to extend the play life. This allowed player to enjoy it at their own pace rather than an outside force dictate it for them.

edited, got my Anet products mixed up. Meant EOTN typed Nightfall by mistake.

I think our minority is growing, but I am uncertain if that will matter.

I don’t think it matters. They can always wave it off with “we have metrics that show people enjoy the game” or as forum rabble. I don’t think they would give up their plans even if the majority of the people would stop logging in. All we can do is give constructive feedback and hope that they will eventually change their ways.

If one side keeps saying things like “but it doesn’t matter” and essentially giving up trying, why would the other side bother listening at all? That’s not an attempt to change things, that’s just . . . unhelpful.

One problem is a lot of people just show up go “it’s all junk”, “it sucks”, “it’s stupid” and don’t elaborate. Add points if they follow it up with “of course, they don’t care”. They care. But they’re not about to abort something in the middle. Especially if it will give yet another “broken promise” to the pile; “Anet promised an update every two weeks and now they stopped because we told them they suck.” Stop and elaborate on why you think it’s not good, it’s stupid, or whatever. Be specific, avoid broad generalizations (especially the words “everyone hates” or “everyone knows”), and suggest alternatives which you think would have worked better.

Another problem is how a lot of this stuff has been made a couple months ago and probably isn’t able to be subjected to sweeping changes without breaking things. Again, they’re not just going to pull the plug and stop it in the middle of the run. They’ll see it through and look at this last “arc” for ways to do better next time. Or if there will even be a next time.

(I’d almost love to see them just give up entirely, pack up the Living world concept in a box, and film dropping it into the ocean with the description “Players, you win, Cantha expansion 2015”)

The reason why I say I’m uncertain if it will matter is that they have a business to run and profit to make. They are going to choose which ever method will make the most money and that’s understandable from a business perspective. I’m sure they care about the game and it’s customers but they have budgets to work within and deadlines to meet. So they are going to try and please the largest portion of customers that they can because you can’t please everyone. I don’t know what the numbers are, but I can presume that the LW as it stands is something most players are doing so that’s what they are going with.

So this is it.

Letting him go and dissolving the dungeon team sent a pretty strong message to the dungeon community. I wonder how the carebears and carrot chasers would react if they dissolved all the LW teams right in the middle of a story arc. Let them know how we feel.

when did the subject of this thread change? This is the skipping thread right? Gosh why can’t people who want to skip play the game right? Well that’s just how it is some times, I think a good idea would be for the players who don’t want to skip to band together and make youtube vids of their non skip runs so those skippers will learn how to fight.

I really want to believe that this is sarcasm.

Indeed it was for the most part, I fee like I’m echoing the same sentiments that many other players have here. There’s really nothing wrong with either approach it’s when one side of the argument expects the other side to comply that sparks start to fly. As it stands right now either way can be played. I really don’t see why we can’t all get along and just party up with like minded players. There’s enough on both sides of the fence to make plenty of parties to do dungeons with. The last dungeon developer weighed in on this as well. I know this was over a year ago but there is no dungeon team, which is the biggest problem with dungeons.

To your first point about us forming a group together…please re-read the post you just responded to.

To the second point. Let me just flat out say that I think your view that dungeons should just be sped through in zombie like fashion after being experienced, is wrong. This is subjective of course, and I cannot take your opinion from you, nor would I want to do that. This is also not any kind of personal attack against anyone that holds your view, it is merely a discussion.

Regardless I will actively argue against your view, and argue that my view is better for the game. My view being that dungeons should ideally offer fun and challenge throughout your entire play experience.

At no point should playing the game just be a means to an end (the carrot). That is when it ceases to be fun, you are literally going through the motions to get some in-game item.

All I want, is for dungeons to be dynamic, fun and less predictable. The only people this will upset are those that don’t care about playing the game, and only want to get rewards as quickly as possible. And honestly, I don’t care if they are upset.

This may sound cold, but like you said, not everyone can get their way. And I will never prefer a status quo that I think is bad just because some people like it.

Actually I did read it. But I stopped reading this response around the time you wrote that your view is better, simply because it isn’t. It’s your view so you think it’s better there’s a difference, you need to learn what a fact is and what an opinion is. You also need to understand that you are forcing your views onto a group that completely disagrees with them so you are effectively yelling at a wall. I don’t care how you play, or what you think is fun. But I also don’t try to stop you from doing it so don’t try to tell me or anyone else that disagrees with you how to play or what’s fun. I’ve yet to insult you but, you’re firing off some rounds now so tell me who is the civil one in this conversation?

I would advise that if you don’t like an aspect of the game you either find a different game to play or write a piece to the developers and explain constructively why stacking is bad and how you would fix it. Just be aware that the game could change drastically for the worse for you and how you think it should play if you got your way, but that players who stack or skip and know why and how this is done will be the ones to adapt. Yelling at the community that plays the game the way it is designed to be played won’t change a thing.

If they redid the AI they would most certainly erase our progress, dungeon master reset, story modes reset, to make sure everyone was on a level playing field when they introduce leaderboards on how quickly people achieve the dungeon master title.

Er, wait.

Why can’t we just have separate groups? Both styles can’t, at the same time, be the norm. And the majority of pugs will not accept the harder of the two.

Just make your own groups, have fun, stop imposing ideas on people who don’t actually want them. Stackers don’t want to hear they’re bad from non stackers and non stackers don’t want to hear it from stackers.

Agree to disagree.

Peace and love.

This, I never wanted leader boards the first time around. I don’t think they’d take away titles but they could surprise us. It’s better to agree to disagree. Complaining to players that try in their own way to make the most out of stacking isn’t going to fix anything.

Players need to make suggestions to the developers in constructive ways to encourage other way of playing besides stacking. Just remember the game could get a lot more difficult for nonstackers. Good players who stack and know why stacking effective will adapt.

edit, changed the word You to Players because the sentence wasn’t directed at one person in particular.

The reward is usually as meaningful as the struggle/journey to obtain that reward… Ever heard the saying “the harder the battle, the sweeter the victory” ?

If you put it like that… why would you even want to spend any time in a dungeon, just have a starting vendor with all best gear in the game…

But to swing to the other end of the spectrum as illogically as you’ve swung your way: why not do all dungeons in white gear with 0 traits spent and dodge unbound? Your struggle would be most epic thus, your “victory” would be most sweet.

Hehe funny, but I don’t think you got what we was saying.

The value of anything is partially defined by its cost…in essence, how difficult it is to obtain. For example, truffles are valuable, they are difficult to obtain…corn is not valuable and is easy to obtain.

The same principle applies to GW2. If a dungeon reward is easily obtainable, the value of it will go down. It doesn’t matter if you put yourself personally through hell to get the reward…if everyone else can get it easily, it will still be worth crap.

It’s kind of like, if you won first place in an Olympic event and your prize was a $20 Starbucks gift card. It doesn’t matter that you “won” the gift card by completing an incredibly difficult olympic event, it’s still only worth $20.

My point was that his example (an item dispenser in lieu of a dungeon run) is as illogical as making a task unreasonably difficult on yourself.
———————————
I do find it interesting that you’re a strong proponent of the experience of the dungeon and yet have come with this argument with a monetary/extrinsic basis. If anything, the saying Nemesis used, “the harder the battle, the sweeter the victory,” is entirely intrinsic. It means that I will gain that much more satisfaction even as more obstacles come my way because I will have overcome them.

If you were truly only concerned with the experience of doing a dungeon, the argument of monetary function shouldn’t come into it.

Ah but it makes complete sense. Here is how I see it…

The player community at large will always follow the path of least resistance to their desired reward. If you want proof of this, then just look at any MMORPG ever.

As such, the experience and gameplay of the game is defined by this path of least resistance. If this path is boring as hell, then so is the gameplay. If this path is really fun, then so is the gameplay. And if you do not like the path of least resistance, you are kind of forced into because:

A. Other players will pressure you into it.

B. If you don’t do it, you will be behind other players in progression and feel cheated.

So I think that it’s VERY important for this path of least resistance to actually be a very fun experience. Because it defines how the game is played.

Which is why I don’t like that stacking is the path of least resistance. It’s just not fun and I don’t like the game to be defined by it.

Exactly my point…

You two should form a party then you’ll only need 3 more players. Keep going and you’ll have a guild. No need to pug if you have enough friends or an active guild, then you guys can run the dungeon any way you want every time without having to worry about your group.

If the mobs were easier to kill then there wouldn’t be a difference between open world PVE and dungeons, also everyone’s definition of fun is different, and that’s pretty vague and hard to program for. Dungeons are supposed to be a challenge but after running a particular path for the 100th time anyone should be able to do it in their sleep regardless of their method used. So why not shorten your time spent in a dungeon? Well that makes sense to me, and I like finding players to run dungeons with that also think along those same lines. I suggest you do the same it makes the experience much better. But we are all little snowflakes so we can’t all agree or think alike.

Zerker warrior tips

MastaNeenja.1537

The fire traps in AC don’t really care if your a zerker or not they always hurt. I suppose if you have a mountain of toughness an vit you may survive the initial blast. I never stood around long enough to find out. Those traps are meant to be avoided at all costs. Just take your time, hang back in your party watch were they go to avoid them. It’s mostly just timing. I suppose you could always use your skill endure pain to run up the stairs in P1 if your party skips Kholer.

You should also bring Shake it off, if you don’t have it already. This is usually enough to take care of conditions it is also a stun breaker which is very important. If you feel this isn’t enough there’s always Signet of Stamina.

If you’re pugging a lot you may be the only zerker in the party and that can be particularly rough it will test your dodge skills. You may have to break out a knight’s set of armor, especially if you’re the lone melee guy. You have my condolences if that’s the case.

Lastly you have to learn the fights, know what weapon or skill works best as each situation comes up. Sometimes Shield skill 5 can save the day and other times you don’t really need a shield and you can mace their face with skill 4 or interrupt an annoying attack with skill 5. It’s all very situational.

How to do dungeons without experience?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: MastaNeenja.1537

MastaNeenja.1537

Thanks for the answers guys I have a level 80 warrior so melee isn’t a problem for me I’m happy for someone to teach me the fight no point in acting like you know the fight when you don’t also I’ll look the posts you guys said I should read

You have the right idea, it is actually best to let everyone know you’re new to dungeons right off the bat, and assure them that you are willing to take direction and follow through on that.

One of two things will happen, you’ll get kicked, which is not cool but it happens because people are people. The whole dungeon community shouldn’t be held responsible for this though, you just have the unfortunate timing to run into some jerks. Honesty them kicking you is doing you a huge favor because they won’t be able to teach you anything if they kept you in the party. This is of course with exception, since you are new you shouldn’t join any runs that are advertised as speed run, or zerker only, or looking for a specific class. These kind of groups are probably in a hurry and not looking for a new player.

Secondly and I find this to be the more common occurrence is that they are ok with it and they might actually show you what to do. This is what happens if I PUG a newbie, as long as they are willing to take direction they get to stay and learn the ropes.

Another thing you can do is build your character for running dungeons. You can ask for advice on this here in the dungeon forum and players will be glad to help you with that, but you are asking for advice so be prepared to hear things you may not agree with, feel free to ask questions but be constructive. Gearing and traiting can be a touchy subject.

I am going to say something in a more constructive manner as I feel my first post in the thread may have been too much of a rant.

I agree with the points made in the article.

I don’t like that LW updates bi weekly and that most of the updates are tied together through a story line. I think LW works best with stand alone events such as SAB or Teq. I think that LW and a full expansion could actually inhabit the same game but I do not know if that’s in the budget range for Anet. I think a lot of people would be interested to find out if LW is the only way we are ever going to see new content or if we will get a more traditional expansion like we saw in GW1.

I choose to sit out on the majority of the LW updates, I played through several of them in the beginning so I think I gave it a fair shot. So what’s left for players like me? We look head for an expansion, or QoL updates. I log in every day but not for LW but to play with my friends. Is there a large chunk of the player base in a similar situation? I don’t know. There’s was another thread that brought up the idea of using the polling system implemented during the Beta events. So far they have been looking at game metrics but the Dev said something like this may be possible. I think it would be a good feed back idea.

I’m sure I’m not alone in getting bored with repeating the same content in a different area and I’m sure that ArenaNet knows that some of their players feel that way.

No, you’re not alone. I personally loathe the way the Living Story has be used to implement filler content designed to keep players logging in on a regular basis. But based on the fact that it’s been more of the same over the last year, it looks as if you and I are in the minority. If enough players are logging in – just logging in, mind you…they don’t even have to enjoy it – for the Living Story content then ArenaNet will keep doing what they’ve been doing.

I think our minority is growing, but I am uncertain if that will matter.

Well i’ve tried LW for a year and I gotta say it’s not that great. I’m ready to try an expansion now.

A year’s worth of LW content wouldn’t scratch the surface of the amount of stuff you’d get from an expansion. A player may plow through the expansion faster because they get all the content at once instead of being released in bi weekly increments but that’s their choice to do so. Two week gating to extend content life is not the answer.

GW2 will need an expansion, LW cannot replace that. Like the author explained in the time it’s taken to tell the current story, very little story has actually come out. Couple that with the fact that they had to throw up some of the story or background to characters on the web makes an already weak story more diluted. If I don’t see it happen in game it didn’t happen, I don’t expect others to live by that but it’s my reasoning. What they put on the web must not have been very important or it would have made it into the game. If they didn’t have time to put it in the game then they need to change their delivery method which is a bi weekly schedule.

I might actually care about the story if it and it’s characters were fleshed out in the game. But they don’t give me a reason to care about the plot, there’s no sense of player agency, if my character doesn’t show up to the event or chase that particular installment’s carrot the world goes on just fine. Much like the personal story my charter has been superfluous for the most part. Just tagging along doing all the grunt work while the NPCs chatter and then get credit for saving the day.

With an expansion i don’t expect them to tell the best story ever but it might be better than what we’ve been given so far with the PS and the LS. Expansions also bring other things to the game that LW hasn’t really delivered and would feel really rushed, unpolished and lackluster if it came out during one of the bi weekly updates. That is new races, new weapons, new dungeons, or new maps to explore. They have tried a dungeon path and a new zone both of which have gotten mixed reactions at best.

If they want to do an expansion they should start advertising it soon, if they want to keep the LW as their only vehicle for new content great. ESO, Wildstar, and EQN are all up and coming games that I have been looking into. I’m sure that I am not the only one doing that kind of research.

I think this game could have been great, underneath all this LW fluff there is a core foundation for an awesome game, but early on after release someone at the top decided to gut that out and turn GW2 into a cash cow. There’s nothing wrong with a company wanting to make the most profit possible, but sometimes when that’s done it’s done in a short sighted manner.

Expansion!? Yes we need one of those, not immediately but soon, like by the end of the year or early next year. LW is not an expansion by any means, nor can it take the place of one.

We are trying to take steps to address some of the dominance of Berserker/DPS players. More info next week, I think.

Jon

How is nerfing zerkers or changing anything about a stat considered fair? Or setting up fights that specifically make it more difficult for a character in full zerker gear to survive? I thought we could play how we want? Does making a party of 5 berserker geared players break that rule somehow?

This isn’t going to change anything, good players will adapt and still bring the best damage possible to shorten the fight. Bad players will call foul and the standards will get lowered once again.

One thing they have going for them right now is lack of competition from a contemporary game, well there is the Star Wars MMO. I can’t wait to get some new options I was interested in Wildstar but I saw the publisher was NCSoft so I think I will pass on that and wait on some reviews to come in. EQN will also be free to play so free to play isn’t much of a selling point once everyone starts doing it. We’ll be able to hop from MMO to MMO and settle on their favorite one. Eventually they will have to innovate and come up with some good reasons for players to stick with GW2 so competition is healthy.

Anyway Guardians are fun I liked how they played out for the most part, it was a different angle on the paladin or cleric character you see in these kind of games.

Will 2014 be another Living Story year?

I want an expansion. Living story just seems so sporadically placed, I’m not drawn to the storyline at all, nor do I want to grind to get AP and the not-so-cool rewards. Please dear god, bring Cantha back. And I want a profession like the Ritualist back. PLEASE. I need my spirits haha. A new race would be nice too.

+1 for all of this

Less fluff, more lasting content.

I’m all for them introducing any new dungeons or lasting content at this point, preferably dungeons though. With new tokens and armor. Heck in this case we could have karka armor and weapons, why not?

It’s already been said in this thread but I think it’s worth saying again. You don’t have to stack, you should open a LFG up and put what path you are doing and no stacking in the description. Play how you want with other people that play the same way. We get a “stacking is bad thread” every week on here so there’s plenty of players that do not want to stack out there. You could even friend them to do repeat dungeon runs with or form a guild.

haven’t seen one of these in a while it’s usually stack thread, we got a new one of those this week too.

Create a LFG and state you do not wish to skip. Play how want with people that play the same way. Skipping is optional which is good because everyone gets to play their way.

I gotta say from Dec 10 to Jan 21 has been great so far, and it proves that yes we can survive just fine without having an update happen every two weeks.

i disagree with this. I’ve been waiting for a next LS update for at least a week or so now. I’m ready for Wintersday to be over.

I’ve enjoyed the LS over the last year and it’s kept me entertained and playing this game. Without it, the champ farms, CoverageVsCoverageVsCoverage, Dungeon farming, and sPvP would be very stale very fast.

i actually hope champ farms become really stale, it’s one of the reasons why exploring the world go’s hand to hand with zergs ruining the experience.

I tried Champ farming once, it was awful. I wouldn’t miss it if it went away. But I don’t like AP farming and boring to-do lists tied to a weak story with unmemorable characters every two weeks either.

I don’t get bored with the core of the game and there’s lots of improvements I’d rather them work on. I like it when they add things like an account wallet, and better skill tips, or they fix a buggy dungeon NPC.

How do you feel about GW2 right now?

I have always liked the core game but around this time last year starting with Flame and Frost things have been on a downhill slide.

I don’t care for LS/LW, for various reasons that I don’t want to get into and derail the topic. I keep waiting for more quality of life updates, like the account wallet and better skill/trait facts. I think there were grand plans for this game but they have been sidelined and a different approach was taken. I keep hoping that things will turn around but my optimism wanes.

Like I said, Rift had similar problems and it took a long time before it started to turn things around. Guild Wars 2 has a great foundation, it just has some issues to address.

Never played Rift so i can’t comment on it. To me the problems this game has stems from the priories that they have given with LW. Rather than fixing broken things in the game they add more fluff to it and a lot of these updates cause more bugs, QA seems to be a very low priority but pushing unpolished content every two weeks seems to be very high priority. To me that’s backwards from how it should be I would rather have expansions personally. I’ve tried the LW for a year don’t really care for it. I can’t see the game improving until they change that. I’m not saying all LW is bad but the majority of it is, if they announced that they were going to slow LW updates down considerably and work on an expansion that would really get my hopes up again for this game.

Another thread like that ? Come one now.

Those forums are already filled up with enough negativity.

Please stop making new threads to say what you want, what you ‘d like and stuff …
There’s a lot of other threads for that. You’re not helping and only making it worse.

The forum is a discussion, and not everyone has the same opinion as you. We are free to make threads. It is the job of the Mods to merge them if appropriate. We aren’t easily amused by transient fluff and want more from our games. The forum is a place where we are allowed to voice our concerns.

So before you start pointing out what other people want and then dictate whether it’s ok to express that or not you should realize you have some of those wants too.
