Who wants to see a quality story arch?

I want to see a quality story in an expansion, or maybe I just want an expansion instead of a new set of bugs with a to-do list. If you look at the personal story, it’s really not that engaging either so I’m a little uncertain that a quality story can happen. I would like for them to try again though maybe they can make one, 3rd time’s the charm.

Question: Within the next two years will we see any kind of traditional expansion that is usually found in MMOs for GW2? Is LW the only intended vehicle for new content?

I’ve heard that expansions are not off the table but this was nearly a year ago, just wondering if there have been any new developments beyond this.

Nothing wrong with saying you are new, actually most players would prefer to find that out sooner rather than later. Should you decide to run dungeons and I hope you do, you should let the party you are with know you are new and haven’t done this run before. Just make sure you join a group that says all welcome or doesn’t post specifics. You’d want to stay away from any LFGs that say speed run, experienced or list specific classes and so on. Players that do that are in a hurry and looking to teach.

After you join an appropriately advertised LFG if you let the party know that you are new most players will try to help you out anyway. If they kick then they are just jerks don’t let it get to you and try to find a better group, you wouldn’t learn from them anyway.

Perhaps you guys could implement some sort of in-game survey after completion of various content/activities (similar to those used during the BWEs)?

I miss filling those out, they were kind of fun and didn’t take that much time to do, having them optional is a good idea though. Just as long as the player is aware that they are there.

For anyone who’s wondering what metrics are, this 5 min video sums up what they are, and how they can be used. I learned about them a few months ago myself.

Personally, I think it would be beneficial to have an option to have a different build, gear set, etc automatically when you enter wvw. The option would prevent me from wearing the same stuff as wvw accidentally when entering a dungeon shortly afterward.

On that note I’d like hot key equips like in GW1, where you press a button and can completely change your armor and weapons set with something that you have preconfigured. This of course could only be used outside of combat.

I remember a dev post somewhere stating that they would actually like to implement something like this, but i don’t remember where it was.

That’s very encouraging, but only if it had a trait change with it, for me anyway.

it would be nice if when you went into WvW it would keep what ever traits you had on when you was in there last like it does in spvp.

Part of the problem also stems from the fact that in challenging pve (for example fotm49) bosses will oneshot a lot of people most of the time, even in pvt gear. If you’re not oneshotted, if you are not playing properly you will die instantly as a zerker or within a few seconds as a tank. Take grawl shaman for example, during his add phase. If you don’t stand on a reflect when those adds spawn, you have moments to live whatever spec you are – so why gear for defense?

I’d like to see overall damage changed from 1 massive one-shot hit every now and again to multiple smaller hits, thus reducing the reliance of dodge/aegis/blind… but then implementing 1 fairly hard hitting yet dodgeable (or CCable – remove defiant stacks for a few seconds) attack every now and again. Uncategorised fractal ogre (harpy level, first boss) is a good example of this. This would increase the usefulness of mitigation such as toughness and replenishment of health via heals.

I agree if you’re gonna go down in a one shot you may as well be ripping the highest numbers you possibly can out of the enemy.

As much as I would like more skills and build variety, introducing a soft trinity is not the way to do it. If you make “tanking” or “healing” required you ruin the unique thing about GW2 in the first place and what the devs were trying to avoid. I feel the game should stay the way it is with the dodge or die mechanics but with adjustments to class balance.

I do too, because of this, the game offers something that other games do not and makes GW2 unique. Trading blows with mobs isn’t what I call fun. This one simple mechanic pushes the game into being more like an action RPG than a turn based one.

I think the issue is that evasion is way too good in GW2, it allow the glassiest build avoid a damage completely. So why should a player build for survivability if with a click I can ignore the damage and killing the mob faster = less damage taken?

Something should be done in PvE to rise the attrition against players, that way if you want to build for max damage you’ll be sure that death will be always very close to you.

what about higher attack speed of mobs and bosses?

Dodging is a very important mechanic, it’s also skill based and I find it quite fun to learn the attacks of enemies and then avoid them with well placed dodges. I don’t think changing the attack speeds will help because people will adjust. It’s a core mechanic, that is fair for the most part people shouldn’t be punished for dodging. Unless they make a condition that damages you when you dodge that would be interesting and annoying.

Zerkers are the product that the rules of the game have created, if the stat combo didn’t exist we would use the next best stats or combination of stats.

Are we talking gear only or traiting for damage too? Because this then becomes a discussion of playstyle which is play the way you want. People can and should play how they want but if the way they want to play isn’t popular then what? The player chose to play the way they wanted to, when a person makes a choice they take responsibility for the choice they made, unless they have been given bad information.

I won’t say I’m pro damage, but I will say I’m for the method that ends the fight the quickest which is usually damage, especially in GW2.

Are we going to get SAB returning shortly after?

Because lets be honest. This is the only living world update the majority of people enjoyed.

Actually, we have metrics on every LW release. While SAB was indeed successful in terms of participation, so were the other releases (Scarlet ones included). I understand that forum feedback can color perception on which releases were the most popular/best received/most enjoyed but opinions on this are largely anecdotal. Please keep that in mind.

Now to your question: will we see a return of SAB? That’s not for me to say, but if it were to come back, what would people like to see from it? Harder/easier content? New world? More/no Moto story?

Or would you like future LW releases to cover other topics? Share your thoughts, but please keep it constructive. Thanks.

I’m not a fan of Scarlet, but I understand that there’s a fair share of players that like her. I didn’t really like how the majority of LW was done in 2013, but again I understand a lot of people liked it. I guess of the things that I did like out of LW I liked SAB, and Teq, because they were stand alone events. I don’t really like how much of it was tied together and then released bi weekly. I didn’t really feel any sense of pacing, and to me the story wasn’t very engaging, I felt like if I wasn’t there the day would still be saved, there was no sense of jeopardy I suppose. Much like the personal story, my character felt superfluous to the LW story.

I would rather see more stand alone events in the LW, I think trying to tell a major story should be something that is done in an expansion. So that players can play it at their own pace. Is GW2 ready for an expansion? Probably not but hints would be good I think, next year, yes an expansion would be highly desired. Well what I’m saying is from my point of view GW2 has been out for almost a year and a half. So it’s not quite expansion ready yet. But I do think the writing team could make a great story for an expansion. I would like to play something that can be really fleshed out and I know you guys could do it, but I feel like you’re too constrained with LW pacing.

I am content to play SAB or other LW updates that may come out in similar fashion until then, the stand alone updates. I liked both installments of SAB, doing more with Moto is probably a good idea, because it’s something that can be kept light. If a player missed out on SAB then they can be caught up with a sentence or two. Oh that’s Moto he made SAB, he clearly likes video games he’s one of us personified within GW2. As for difficulty, that’s a tough one, I would say play to both sides of the isle, by simply making the first world in the next installment farily easy and fun to give returning players something to warm up to and new players can jump in with their veteran friends and not feel left out because they don’t have the candles or bombs. Then progress forward with more difficulty in the next world or zone to catch back up to some more brutal play that the more hardcore players want to see. There should be at least one zone for each kind of player.

I think gw2dungeons.net will cover how to handle what i was referring to as tactics earlier. As Skychef said I think this this should be the only guide listed in the FAQ the guide needs to be concise to keep it from being derailed.

As Lilith Ajit has said Stacking can be controversial because some people do see it as an exploit so on a good day it’s a grey area. There should probably be a separate stickied topic on why we stack. Stacking itself is a playstyle that should only apply to this FAQ in the LFG section if at all. If it’s a speed run stacking is implied, like skipping trash mobs, if you don’t want to stack you should say so in your LFG.

Talking too much about builds could also derail the FAQ, Anet will make changes and builds will be adjusted as time goes by so there is no definitive answer on builds either.

I remember when I was new, my group only 4 of us in the level 30s range did AC story a couple of months after the game’s release. We were broke and equipping our armor drops by the time we got to Ralena and Vassar we defeated them in our underwear after several failed attempts. But we did it, we finished our first run because we wanted to succeed. No one carried us and there were very few if any guides out because the game was fairly new. So yeah players today have all sorts of knowledge at their fingertips and an experienced community to get advice from. New comers have it a lot easier today.
I’ve helped pugs that wanted to get better, improve.

It all comes down to how determined you are or how willing you are to let things be handed to you.

Soldier armor pieces sell very well though :\

Just keep telling yourself they are buying those pieces for WvW where its more practical to have.

I like the idea of this thread, it proactively addresses the dungeon community’s supposed toxic side or rather what brings it out. I see lots of comments from our veteran forum inhabitants saying things like “this thread again”. For example we usually get a Stacking thread on a near weekly basis.

Perhaps this should be stickied, or a more carebear friendly version should be written up and stickied with the subject

If you are totally new to dungeons and PVE in general I’d suggest using your warrior. get an alternate set of equipment to run dungeons with. Knights or Berserker, preferably zerker. You’d want zerker trinkets, and weapons with either knights or zerker armor.

You may have to retrait for dungeons too. If you are low on funds I’d go with your theif for more damage if you feel comfortable using thief. Warrior is more forgiving of mistakes which is why I suggested it over thief, since you are learning the ropes.

If you retrait your war I believe the best to run is 30/25/0/0/15

I will say that my least favorite part about HOTW is that two of the bosses involve underwater combat. Though once I was with a group that pulled the P3 boss over to some stairs and ranged him, which I would rather do than underwater combat.

On the plus side for HOTW, Kodan.

yeah start the dungeon then, create your LFG. they need to have a pop-up for when another party tries to merge with your party too so you can opt to accept to deny the merge.

I think bosses should have to adhere to the same rules that players do to some extent. They should have stability, like we do. This would allow classes with boon stealing abilities to be more useful. They should have stun breakers, but be allowed to apply them and stability more frequently, but not to the point that it renders our stuns moot. They should stun us because we can stun them as well and why not steal our boons too? Very few bosses also make real use of conditions to put pressure on us as well. They can still have mountains of HP and defense too. It is 5v1 after all. Having a group boss fight would actually be pretty fun too now that I think about it, having 3-5 semi powerful bosses instead of one glorious mountain of HP to whittle away. There’s a lot of things they could try out. The Aether Retreat boss was a step in the right direction, imo, but maybe I’m asking for too much.

I liked the Molten Facility and the Aether Retreat, the TA path a little less but that one does require some effort, and not as much in the way of rewards.

I don’t think there’s any plans in the near future to do a dungeon rework. Look at AC before and after. When it got redone less people ran that dungeon, it’s pretty rough for a first dungeon. I like my game to be challenging but I feel that AC shouldn’t be the first dungeon in the lineup anymore. I like AC but I am an experienced player, but this dungeon can be daunting for someone who just hit lvl 35. After the rework and the reaction from the community, (not just the dungeon community) it seems that dungeon reworks were put on hold indefinitely.

It just seems to me that they tried once, failed and gave up, then was disbanded. All efforts then went into maintaining a rigid bi weekly update schedule, which I feel takes away more from the game than it adds to it, unless you count bugs and lackluster content as a plus. That’s a completely different subject so I’ll stop there.

There seems to be some stealth updates here and there, such as missing way points and the changes made to Alphard. If they put patch notes in like that for better or worse we might find out that there could be a dungeon team somewhere testing some things out, but silence sure isn’t helping. The last time a dungeon dev posted here that I know of was over a year ago, that should say something, I am pretty sure no other subforum has gone that long without an actual developer comment.

This is why I am keeping my fingers crossed for an expansion, that may add all new dungeons to the game. I think that might be a better route to take that way you still have the old dungeons that players are comfortable with and you have new dungeons to experiment with. Once they get the dungeon construction down to a science they could then rework the old ones.

But I think that would require a tremendous amount of effort and may not be as profitable as other avenues they could pursue. Though I would pay gems, or rather money for new dungeons it they came in a box with the word expansion written on it. However I don’t think GW2 is ready for an expansion just yet, the game has been out for a little over a year, and the resources for preparing the game for an expansion seem to be allocated elsewhere.

I’m talking about the fractal weapon BOXES (where you can choose the skin you want) that ANet said they would introduce to the game but ended up leaving it for fractal levels not available yet.

Yeah that’s called false advertising, when you promise something but then you don’t make it available. They swept it under the rug, and edited the webpage.

It wasn’t until someone checked the API that they actually responded.

Hmm because people have lives outside of GW2 and not all of my friends are available at the same time. This is the primary reason why I PUG.

There’s days were I would rather 4 man dungeons, if I can. If they added heroes I’d give them a try they can’t be any worse than some of the players I’ve ran with.

That said I’ve met some nice players from PUGing too it’s not all bad but it really is some kind of twisted reverse Russian Roulette most of the time.

Sometimes though when I am playing with a particularly bad PUG i imagine that they are just that, a pug, and they don’t play so well cause their paws have trouble hitting the proper keys, at least that way I can laugh out loud while I die on the inside.

Well if you like rangers you just need to learn how to get the most out of rangers in dungeons, no need to get give up on them. Which is what all players should be doing, learning how to get the most out of their favorite class. The basics for dungeon rangers are as follows, leave your bows at home. Melee, use 1-handed sword and GS, mostly 1-hand auto it’s just too good though it does take time to get used to it. No Signet of the Hunt, 25% movement bonus doesn’t help your party. Frost spirit however does just hide it somewhere close by so that everyone can get the bonus. Last I checked Drakes were good to take into dungeons and cats, though that may have changed, pet skills are important, such as skills that give might or fury so you can help buff the party.

Late to the party missed all the fun.

I agree with OP 100% dungeons get no love. When they do get attention as in the case of Fractals things went from bad to worse. (could be considered opinion but it is a widely held opinion which gives it some weight) When this particular group has something to say it gets largely over looked. This makes things even more toxic.

Swiftpaw was on to something but it looks like their post was deleted, shame.

Though the thread was about Dungeons and the Dungeon subforum moving it to that subforum and out of General Discussion was effectively sweeping it under the rug. Poor judgement was used here, this needs exposure. Don’t think so, imagine if your favorite part of GW2 went largely ignored and they pulled the team responsible for working on it how would you feel?

I was interested in Wildstar until I saw the publisher, one game from them is enough. Though I can’t wait for its release GW2 needs contemporary competition.

If we actually got some kind of interaction from a developer on here from time to time like other subforums things probably wouldn’t be so bad. This is why many posts in which a dev had posted from a year ago were bumped to the top about 2 weeks ago.

We are sending our messages and concerns in different ways some of them may be not the most pleasant but it probably wouldn’t have got this way if this particular community didn’t feel as alienated as it does.

Party merging

This happened to me twice over the weekend, it wasn’t with arah selling, just other dungeon runs were we needed to PUG a couple of players. The parties would merge and I or one of my guildies would get kicked; clearly the merge party feature isn’t working they should just patch and disable the button for now.

You would think our shield would have such a block. I would rather get a rework of the guardian shield than to get a new off hand personally. I think it’s sad that our symbol is a shield and Engi and War both have better shield skills than Guardians.

Also Shield for main hand because I want to Dual Shield Wield.

As for stacking, if you don’t like the easy way, there will always be a hard way, you just need your team buy into that.(or die trying and let your team carry you, since most dungeon, aside certain part, can be done by 2-4 men)

That’s true, most dungeons can be completed with less than 5 people, that’s why it’s so easy for someone to slip on buy and not realize they were carried.

There’s days were i have such bad pug luck I try to convince my group to just 4-man it.

Light, cure condition with projectile, or retaliation with blast. the projectile finisher would actually be more useful in PVE. so points for that one

So we agree that blast finishers are primary a melee mechanic which is most effective while stacking. Blast finishers as i have shown are generally more helpful than projectile finishers.

I would like to point out that a guardian running GS could simply whirl to do the same. So even though the projectile would be better than blast, whirl (stacking melee) would be best.

You Sir are correct! I didn’t want to overwhelm OP as I just did a huge info dump I was trying not to get into other finishers or specific class examples.

Illusion whirl/leap/projectile finishers…ranger pet finishers…but since you haven’t heard of them, they obviously don’t exist.

Yes, there are rare exceptions to stacking, but they are not the rule.

Why would you want to spread out?

You need to be near other people to get them up if they go down
combo fields encourage close proximity play
you can dodge while you are stacked, in fact you are SUPPOSED to
If stacking is bad, then so is ranging and kiting

there is no real punishment for clumping up, and don’t expect any dungeon over hauls the deves are too busy planning what Scarlet will do next.

It’d be nice if you could earn ascended armor in the game for an ungodly amount of tokens. I don’t see why this would be an issue. The new armor should look different compared to the exotic, but like other people have said there’s no profit in that. It would be a grind though which is what we do for crafting ascended gear.

I get the feeling that Anet had grand plans for dungeons and expansions and then something happened and they had to do a rapid rework. This game’s foundation screams of possible greatness that could have been, but instead we get scarlet updates every two weeks because the carebear and AP hunter crowd said they were bored. So they took their dungeon resources and allocated them to a LW project team. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an expansion team that was also quietly dismantled and redistributed into one of the LW teams. Do they even have a Quality assurance team at this point maybe that’s where LW team number 3 came from? I understand that you can’t take a guy who fixes bugs and then put him into a position that creates new content so i guess i’m heading down the path of speculation so I’ll stop here. But I’d rather speculate on this than why Scarlet’s feelings were hurt.

Swapping character at the end of Dungeon

There’s nothing wrong with swapping at the end but there are a couple of things to bear in mind.

if you plan to swap you can’t start the dungeon, (as already stated). swapping a character is what kills the instance.

if you are pugging, make a note in LFG that you intend to swap at the end, or once the party is formed you should let everyone know your intentions. Most people are ok with it, but most people also do not like surprises.

lastly if pugging be sure to say thanks for allowing you to swap at the end after loot has been awarded, a little courtesy goes a long way
