Practice = hotjoin
ranked = unranked with the only difference of not counting for leaderboards but otherwise both are exactly the same.

You’re either playing on a new prof, the MMR still needs some tweaking or you got (un)lucky due to the new influx of alot of new players trying the new matchmaking.

And I kinda like we now have hotjoin, an unranked and a ranked MATCHMAKING. Something we really need from release.

Perhaps the rewards for unranked need to be reduced, considering we DO want more than a handful of people queueing for the ranked arenas, but at the moment there isn’t really a need. Unranked arenas are just easy wins at the moment if you know what you’re doing.

Please do not overreact to this patch. Let’s at least give it two weeks and allow for the consideration of MMR and whatnot in the matchmaking. At the moment, the system will be assuming that all of us are equals (I think), and will assume that the newbies are just as capable of rotating as the rest of us. Sure, we’re going to have some terrible matchups, but the main focus of these next weeks is to make sure queue times are semi-low and funtional, to make sure everything works from a game perspective, THEN to consider how to make matchups more consistently even.

I generally either solo queued or I queued with groups of 2 or 3 and we would usually get stomped on by tryhard teams of 5 over and over because they were able to communicate far easier. With this patch, my friends and I can solo, duo or trio queue without having to worry about that. I have yet to encounter a solo queue of mine where I’m pitted against a full team (or even a team of 4). In a queue of 3 people, I got a 5 man team opposing me once so far, but that is all.

The far more glaring issue at the moment is the incredible skill differential because the game assumes that we are all equally capable, I guess.

I would be in favor of perhaps lower ranked players not being placed on a team of 4, especially against full 5 man teams. However, this might just discourage 4 man teams from queueing, which we don’t want to do.

As far as the courtyard goes, I don’t see anything wrong with it. I have played the courtyard 5 times since the patch, once with one guildie, another time with 2, and the rest of the time I was alone. Liam McColgan (the guy above me) said there was no need for bunker, but there totally is. The map is about coordinating bursts, and even as a group of solo players, it’s not the worst. The only reason I dislike the map is because it is so obvious that certain players are so incapable of adapting. I’m going to attribute this to skill level. I played as a mesmer for some of the matches, and I swapped from gs/staff to gs/sword pistol because I knew what the map would entail. When I was an ele, I swapped from staff to d/d because again, I knew what the match would entail. All this means is that players are going to have to think in that minute before the match starts and carry an extra weapon set or two. I DO NOT SEE THIS AS AN ISSUE. The issue is the players who are stuck in this map who simply say “i can’t 1v1” or “I’m not prepared for this map” and give up there. The map is NOT about 1v1. It’s about a sustained team fight. Which team can burst targets better. Which team can out-do the other with downed play. In almost all of my matches, both teams got up to about 100 points fairly easily and then one team fell apart because they refused to fall back and regroup. In ONE of my matches, it ended up being about 500 to 50 at the end because the enemy team fell apart and we were able to res our downs for the most part. However, I knew 3 of the people on the enemy team to be good players. I’ve wvw’d and pvp’d with them before. I didn’t really see it so much as a skill differential as a tactical one, as in any pvp match.

Just my thoughts. I’m really enjoying the patch aside from massive queue times. I’d rather suffer through a terrible team than have a 20 minute queue.

Edit: also, to Justin’s “2, 3) Are you willing to wait longer for a match if it greatly reduced the odds of this happening?”… No. I do not want to wait longer because the “average” wait time is not anywhere near my wait times. Most of the time I have been waiting between 5 and 10 minutes, which I am fine with. The problem comes when the matches start taking longer than 10 minutes. I’d like to get about 3 matches in per hour at minumum. This isn’t possible if I have to wait 20 minutes for a queue.

I just sat in queue for a good 22 minutes and I got maybe 10 queue pops, but it always capped out at 8 or 9 players until just now. This was in unranked, and neither team was premade. They had a pair queueing and I think my team was all solo.

I really wish I had something to do during this 22 minute wait.

While I’m in the pvp lobby, the game keeps calling targets on random people over and over. I am NOT in a party, so it’s not some trolly party member, and the target seems to be quickly swapping between 5-7 people around the map. It’s not game breaking, but it makes my head hurt to see.

EBG has been lagging for my guildies and I for the past few weeks. I made a post about it a while ago but it’s still being ignored.

The ONLY choppy play and lag my friends and I have experienced is in eternal. The battlegrounds aside from EBG are completely functional.

Mesmer should run full zerk. If you need some extra help, add in some cavs trinkets, but anything higher than 2200 armor and you’re probably just bad.

For staff ele, I run a mix of zerk, cavs and valk. Again, my armor is rarely higher than 2200. With cantrips, you should be able to stay alive unless you’re a scrub. A thief or whatever opens on you, you’ll have at least a few seconds alive from dodges, mist form and lightning flash. Get to your train and they will die.

I’ve been in ts with a few guildies from different areas of Canada and the States, and we’re all getting ridiculous amounts of lag, as well as some disconnects and a variety of “server is unable to verify your login information” messages. It’s in both PvP, WvW and PvE, and our packet loss in TS is minimal if there is any packet loss at all.

Something’s going on with the servers. I don’t know what specifically, but it’d be great if it could be fixed soon.

Maybe I’m part of the wrong crowd, but every time people I roam with or my guild or even a lot of PUG blobs I’ve run with have one person suggest that we kill the PvE mob and everyone else tells them to go back to PvE. We want fights against other people. Anet actually has a system which allows PvE-like drops from PvP. Embrace that, not the inclusion of more PvE.

Or do we not remember what happened when the toxic mobs and giant flowers were added to Ebg?

Kind of game breaking… Stomping has become somewhat impossible after the patch. I’ve been testing it with some guildies and I can spam ‘F’ near them to stomp and it will take about 5 seconds before the option is presented. This makes pvp really difficult, as well as wvw.

I used to think this didn’t really matter, but when you are put in combat prior to a match, you can’t swap your skills or traits while in the arena. I know you can just say that we could fiddle around in hotm, but we shouldnt have to.

The experience scroll from the second birthday present (or is it third? whichever was just handed out) doesn’t stack with the experience scroll received through achievement points. It’s not really an item that you can use too frequently, so until there’s another character I’d like to level to 20, I don’t want it to be clogging up my inventory like it is.

The suggestion is pretty simple – allow only one distinct profession per team in a match. I don’t know exactly what wizardry is hidden behind the current matchmaking algorithm but lately I’ve seen a huge increase of matches in hotjoin and solo queue where one of the sides had 3+ players of the same profession. Today alone I had a match against a team of 3 eles and right after that against 4 rangers.

I know it might impose even more restrictions to the already small number of matches in sPvP (ranked is almost impossible to organize even during prime time) but I think it would at least promote a much needed diversity and role based play.

This doesn’t take into account players that will swap classes after they get a look at the other team, etc etc. And how am I to know that the queue for mesmer is 10 minutes while the queue for engi is 15 and ele is 5? I’m happy to play either, but that doesn’t really allow me to decide which class to queue on.

I have no problem with a lot of people on the same class. There’s enough build diversity and character slots out there that someone should switch. I do. It’s not that hard.

Don’t just switch to a profession that seems to be good for the team, but you can’t play it -.- Stick to ONE (max two) profession(-s), and just be good with it.

Yes, some of the matches won’t be perfect that way (f.e. maybe a support guardian missing), but in all the other matches you will shine more, due to getting better with your profession.

So much disagreement here. If you’re not willing to switch your classes, you’re not going to be much help. Obviously don’t play a class you’re terrible at, but maybe branch out and learn more than 2-3 classes. I’ve gotten to ~rank 25 solo queue by entering on mesmer. You stay on your class if it looks like it’s going to work with your team, but I have a turret engi, hambow, bunker staff ele, condi necro, etc etc waiting just incase the situation calls for it.

Aside from relative awareness of the map, best thing you can do is suit yourself to your team. You play ranger and necro, mostly condi. That is good, but it’s not the greatest at all times. Maybe get familiar with a bunkery class/build and a direct damage dps build/class just in case condi isn’t going to work out.

A lot of it is also what your opponents are. You can generally guess that if the enemy team has a lot of guardians/warriors, they’re going to be bunkery. Lots of engis and necros? Condis and maybe direct damage, or maybe turrets. It’s impossible to be certain, but 1) you’ll start to recognize other players in solo queue and know what build they’re running and 2) at some point you’ll be able to scope out the enemy team and see that their engi is running p/p so he’s probably condi, etc etc.

World Ability Points Reset?

Traditionally WXP points have always been reset with the start of a new tournament. I don’t think this will be any different this time around.

For those of us that either do not want to redo our entire wxp point distribution or (in my case) we have enough points that we can just buy the new traitlines flat out. I don’t want to go through all my characters and mindlessly click through to re-spend my points. Eventually, i would expect this to be more required because of the higher wxp gain to new trait ratio…

I’ll give the condi PU thing a shot, but I’m far more interested in the potential the buffs have for a non-PU condi build. Perhaps a viable condi shatter. Perhaps some sort of condi phantasm build. Who knows. I doubt PU will be a viable build outside of 1v1s (even now, condi PU will just make someone stay at home or wherever until an ally can come chase him away), and the more likely way to get your mesmer into higher end pvp will be the interrupts, especially with the mantra buff and the staff clone buff (maybe something along the lines of scepter/pistol, staff 0 4 6 0 4. we shall have to wait and see)

It’s probably too optimistic to think the feature patch will actually address any of these, though.

On the contrary! I talked to one of our developers, and there are a lot of Mesmer bug fixes that will be deployed with the Feature Pack. I do not have the full list yet, keep an eye out for the update notes once the Feature Pack goes live.

Are they going to be legitimate bug fixes, or more along the lines of the iLeap “fix” that did nothing more than make the skill more easy to counter…

For the past few days, I’ve noticed the same people being afk each game. So much so that they time out of each match in spvp. Whether they’re on my team or the other one, I report them, but they’re still there. Constantly. If I’m the only one reporting, is anything being done? I’d rather accidentally have myself temporarily banned (for an hour or a day) for walking afk or having my power go out for a match than have to deal with the same people over and over getting queued with me. I don’t enjoy 5v4 or 4v5 at all.

Agreed. I would even pay a one-time (or yearly, or whatever) fee in gems to have a pass to a restricted area with a bank and a TP. Just stop making me load 2-3 maps every time i have to do something.

Do you think this would cause any uproar in the community if we did a change like this, and if it did can you think of a better way to implement it?

Why complain about having a bank in the mists? I would say MOST people can just press “B” click their home BL then run right around the corner to the armorsmithing station and bam…a bank. And it is free, so just give the PvP pop a bank as well. I know I would sure love one.

Someone already put up a good argument point for this statement, that WvW isn’t always accessible. Sometimes there is a queue which for players in a hurry will cause them to spend some silver to get to a place with a bank instead of going to WvW for free.

It’s not really a good point. Anyone can easily get to either wvw or spvp, and from there, get to LA. Even if wvw is queued, EotM, the epic fail that it is, has a free port to LA and therefore banks. It’s not as big of a deal as you’re letting it be. Anyone who knows their maps will have an easy time finding a bank. We’re just tired of doing it.

Still have not heard anything about my primer. At this point it’s not even about the primer, it’s about Anet not responding with anything other than “thank you for submitting a ticket.”

A gem store item (something which people pay real money for) is NOT functioning. You use it and then use your food and your food will wear off in 30 or 60 minutes, depending on the food. When this does not work, you submit a ticket and are expected to be OK with your gem store purchase not working? Come on, Anet. At least send replacements or something.

THEN, they have the nerve to send an email asking how I would rate my support? What support? All that was given to me was some suggestion that I make a forum post here and it is given no response.

I feel like the ridiculousness of this post doesn’t even need to be addressed. You want me to take 2 hours out of the Friday when I’m most likely able to play to allow you to map complete?

A far easier suggestion and a far less dramatic change would be to assign WvW matchups as they currently do, but after that randomly assign a colour so there is a likely chance that a server which is consistently green (or whichever) will get some variation in that. Maybe one week you’re green, the next you’re blue. Math says you’re going to get a lucky draw eventually.

all real gvg guilds are going to t2 NA. that’s where the good fights will be again. and since that is where all the good gvg guilds are, that is also where the good roaming will be.

If you consider “good roaming” to be either finding no people, finding the same people over and over and over (as in the same group of 4-5) or getting absolutely zerged down, then T2 roaming is the best around. Realistically, it’s fairly bad. Me and a buddy go to take a camp solo, enemy who was sitting in the camp then calls in friends and stays alive for just long enough that the entire freaking map blob shows up and zergs the two of us down. This is not the first time, this will not be the last time. I’m not complaining, it’s just the reality of the situation.

Since Friday, my guild’s been experiencing some crazy lag spikes in WvW. There are no enemies around. Maybe 20 friendlies running with us and we’re just… lagging. I can’t use [Blink] or [Illusionary Leap] (i know this is buggy, but the teleport is even problematic).

I find that it’s whenever you die that the food disappears. I don’t die frequently, but it happens, which kind of defeats the purpose of the primer.

I’m not sure about resizing when you access your inventory through your guild bank in wvw. I’m noticing it when I relog into the game, especially when I change from one character to another. All my characters have inventories at 10 spaces wide. Every time I log, one of them goes down to 9 wide. It’s not the biggest issue, but it’s a bug that’s been here for over 2 months now. Not even a mention.

Generally, I consider myself an above average mesmer (above average pvper in general). The only class that I consistently have troubles with is thief, and only when they are running the s/d evade spam build. Other classes can beat me, but for the most part, it’s due to player skill/error rather than permanent evades.

That being said, how do we counter perma-evade, or seemingly permanent evades. I’d assume immobilizing them, but if I can’t land the first immobilize, what then? Ground targeted AoE? My mesmer doesn’t have any. I can summon phantasms, which helps, but for the most part I’m dead or my phantasms are dead before the thief can get low. I’ve practiced 1v1ing against thief guildies running the s/d evade build, and I can get them really low and SOMETIMES beat them if I change my build entirely, almost to the point that I changed my build to something that is only useful for countering this thief build. How do the rest of you cope? Obviously an entire team of these thieves would be fairly useless if you have some reliable aoe, but for classes that don’t have that aoe…

Bifrost is somewhat rainbow, and I’m sure that as soon as I find a mesmer build that uses a staff consistently, I’ll run that, but until then, I’m going to sit here upset that there are no unicorn greatswords and rainbow swords, or that mesmers can’t run shortbow.

I’m just glad we’re getting some updates. Jessica has responded much more than previous WvW coordinators would have, I’m sure (and I think we can go back through dev communications in the wvw forums and see that it’s true). It’s a step in the right direction, community-wise.

There’s still a lot to be done for wvw, but if we get communication like this (eg: updates on major issues every day or two), it will at least feel like something is improving.

I never use mind stab in wvw. Almost forgot it was a skill. Stopping to use it is detrimental, so I’d love to see some way to use it on the move. This would mean changing the animation to perhaps stabbing the sky? The sword comes up from the ground, so that would possible make sense.

Another possibility I was thinking is make the skill a little like meteor storm. Large AoE circle with 4-5 mind stab blades coming out of the ground, but only happen once. Not a damage over time thing. One large AoE with 4 or 5 blades coming out of the ground to hit whoever it hits. Like meteor, there’s no guarantee that it would hit anyone, but it also has a possibility of hitting a lot of people. You’d barely need to change the skill for that, I would think. For this functionality, I think I would even use it if it required me to be stationary. It gives the mesmer some random, yet low cooldown aoe to tag people and the potential to remove boons from a whole group, or hit no people whatsoever. Mesmers are in a fairly average place right now, although bug fixes would be great.

As far as what the profession needs, they have almost no access to aoe. The ONE build mesmers have for AoE is glamour confusion which was kind of nerfed to the ground. Now there are a few options, but if I want AoE for pve/spvp, I’ll bring a necro or an ele. If I want tags in WvW, I’ll bring an ele or a necro. If I want single target dps, I’ll bring a thief. Mesmer isn’t the best at either of these. It has some nice CC, but when it comes to AoE, I’ll be able to get one person dead in the time any other caster could get a small group of things dead. It’s all about the AoE for larger team fights, and mesmer just can’t hold up. Even thieves have shortbow for the tags. Mesmer has what? Feedback? That requires projectiles. Condi proc? That requires them to use skills. Phantasms? They die too quickly in large fights.

I’d be totally fine if mesmers had a nice way to consistently tag people without doing massive amounts of damage. Just a way to contribute dps wise before the others have killed everything dead.

Is it possible to create separate templates for separate aspects of a build (traits, skills, weapons, etc) and each template is a combination of however many of these? I see a big issue being in the PvE/WvW category with skins for weapons and the change-ability of items used. Implement that stuff later (separately, even) and tack it on to the end of a template code.

All I really care for is the trait setup that I’m using. From there, I can decipher my weapons and armor fairly easily, and those are the easy bits, anyways. Once the rest has been developed, we can have it implemented without much hastle, I would assume. From what I’ve seen of templates, it’s a series of seemingly nonsensical characters that mean something to the system. What’s stopping us from just making the templates larger with more information? For now, include traits and skills. As we get the ability to code for armor and weapons, add that as well.

Keep in mind that the bug is rather non-game breaking even though it is a bit annoying, and as such, it might very well not be considered a priority one issue if something more urgent comes in.

While this might not be gamebreaking material in the traditional sense, it’s potentially gamebreaking for their playerbase. Anet (should) know that their WvW playerbase feels alienated, which is why a lot of us are so happy with Jessica, because while she can’t do everything, she talks to us. That’s about all Anet can hope to do for WvW right now. Without clear content updates and schedules, because we know they won’t be coming for WvW anytime soon, all they can offer is communication and assurances that they have not forgotten about us.

For the most part, people won’t care about the rewards. I have not received my chest, I do not much care for the weapon skins, it’s a non-issue for me. However, when mapchat is filled with people asking when the rewards will be available and why they didn’t get anything special on Tuesday, it effects me. It’s not the biggest issue, but Anet has not made it clear to its playerbase what is happening. The information is there if we look for it, but only barely.

To get back to the gamebreaking nature of this glitch/failure: this adds to a pile of other things which annoy the WvW community. Will it result in a farmable exploit which makes us rich? No. However, when we see the slow response to this type of content while compared to the (comparatively) incredibly fast response to the PvE glitches and bugs, the WvW community feels more alienated. It’s gamebreaking from a community management standpoint. Is there anything Anet can do about this? No, probably not. A solution will come, but the longer the solution takes, the more people will notice that their rewards aren’t coming and the big WvW content which people were promised to make the game fresh becomes more and more of a failure.

I see the big problem being the community management here. If Anet had always been upfront with the troubles they were having with glitches and bugs and ways to work around certain issues (even if their response was “This is not high enough on our list of important things that it will get an update in the near future”), we’d probably be taking this much better. Instead, we’re kind of used to Anet not giving too much discussion to the WvW forums. Jessica’s a great step forward, and she should in no way feel like this is directed at her, but we’ve grown used to very little/nothing from Anet, so when something is given to us, we’re hesitant. Mark is responding with as much information as he probably has, but we’re wary of accepting that because of our history (including some season 1 rewards still missing).

Update post-03/06 patch: Still an issue. I was hoping that Anet pushed the patch through without telling anyone. They have not.

Bumping my own posts now, but nobody else seems to be talking about this. Have to keep it at the front of the forum queue so Anet does something about it. Even just mentions that they’re working on the issue (although that means a fix is at least a month away)

Update: Still an issue.

To the guy above me, it WAS an issue a few months ago that got a fix. Then the April patch hit and it’s been close to 2 months since Anet’s bothered to do anything to fix it. It’s not the same as the last one. Last time, whenever you opened your inventory, it would slowly change size. Now, whenever you log out and log back in, your inventory will be approximately one size smaller (as opposed to 10 across, it’s not 8 or 9 across).
