3-hour matches

in WvW

Posted by: NornBearPig.9814

NornBearPig.9814

How exactly would 3 hour matches do anything to combat coverage discrepancies?

Point is, a NA player would join a server whose 3hr period is during NA primetime, matched up against other NA servers. An oceanic player would join a server whose 3hr period is during oceanic primetime matched against oceanic servers.

The OPs suggestion would require many more servers than there are currently, likely a separation of PvE – WvW server link, and a complete overhaul of many WvW core systems. It will never happen. And 3 hrs is too short.

Ditto above, I make a character and do the first two story arcs, then replace it with another. Someday when I’m done with all the race specific arcs, I’ll go kill Zhaitan.

I have two slots occupied by level 80s, 1 slot for personal story arcs, and 1 slot to reroll any class for sPvP. Last one is a mule..for now.

Who said it had to be about skill?

I think we all know there isn’t much skill involved in large scale PvP but that doesn’t stop it from being fun, or companies continuing to develop games with mass player battles.

Also the term GvG existed long before GW1’s cap the flagstand-kill the guild lord-mode. It means what it means, a guild vs another guild, and the community definition of 20v20 deathmatch satisfies that as long as they are each in two separate guilds.

What is there to do after level 80?

Living Story, Fractals of the Mists, and World vs World are the end-game in GW2.

Living Story is brand new content being added on a bi-weekly basis. But it goes away after a limited time. This is one of the primary ways Anet is trying to revolutionize the genre, so don’t miss out on it. Any character can participate since your level is upscaled to whatever is needed to complete the content.

Fractals are your more traditional endgame mini-dungeons where you can grind higher fractal levels and ascended gear. You are able to enter the fractals as an upscaled character, but most groups beyond tier 1 will still require level 80 and fully geared.

WvW is ongoing war against other worlds (servers). Unless you are in a packed top tier world, they could probably use your help on the front lines. It ranges from casual PvP to hardcore guild groups – so don’t worry about going in and others getting mad at you for being inexperienced. You should probably wait until you are at least level 30+.

Temporary Free/Reduced Transfer Prices?

in WvW

Posted by: NornBearPig.9814

NornBearPig.9814

Now right before the first season starts would be a bad time. The league system is supposed to work best when all of the servers within each league are similar strength. Opening free transfers right before the season starts would shift around that strength in unpredictable ways.

For example you could have a server in bronze get stacked by T1 guilds and absolutely dominate all other bronze servers when the leagues begin. Unlike the Kaineng incident there is no way for the leagues to self-correct themselves mid-season. Since leagues to my knowledge are locked, there is no way for that rogue server to move up to where it should be. Granted this is still possible without free transfers, but as long as gems act as a barrier most transfers will be upward not downward.

It’s odd, hammer Warriors were able to do basically the exact same thing in GW1 and I don’t remember there being all that much fuss over it. In GW1 I had a build that had around 4 knockdowns in a row. I had also mastered “quarter-knocking,” timing your knockdowns so that your target doesn’t even have enough time to cast a 1/4 second spell.

People didn’t complain because was so much melee hate in GW1 (blindspam, hexspam, wards, aegis…list goes on) that landing your KDs through all that wasn’t easy to do.

Alts vs Focusing on 80s

in Players Helping Players

NornBearPig.9814

I wouldn’t focus on many alts, just 1 or 2 mains unless you have a lot of spare time on your hands. Most everything in this game that is worth something is character bound, so it is better to perfect a character at a time rather than attempting all at once. This is not to say you shouldn’t have any alts, they are great to mess around with when one is bored.

Norn are the most in-theme Rangers and Warriors.

Many Norn are hunters by trade, which is a common theme with Ranger skills/traits (hunter’s shot, wilderness survival, hunter’s call).

They worship the animal spirits, and what do Rangers get? Animals and Spirits.

Eir Stegalkin, the Norn hero of this game, is a Ranger.

Same way Humans are most in-theme with Guardians (being religious) and Mesmers (duplicitous politicians), and Charr are in-theme with Engineers and Warriors.

Food, stacks, and gear I view differently since they are things you can have if you put the effort into it.

Now you are picking and choosing which artificial advantages you like and don’t like in a game mode that is imbalanced from the start. You’re accepting the possibility that he may have outplayed you but you won because of Bloodlust, but the exact same can be said about gear/food. Unless you consider out-grinding someone = out-playing them, in which case I have nothing else to say.

Make Bloodlust inversely proportional?

in WvW

Posted by: NornBearPig.9814

NornBearPig.9814

I don’t think the idea will work though it’s in the right direction.

This means every player that enters the zone and does not contribute directly (farming the daily, doing jumping puzzles, idle conversation) becomes an instant liability to his server. This might create greater hostility between organized PPT players and casuals – a big no no in Anet’s book.

What I would suggest instead is:

1. Give players and NPCs the stat buff while inside their 3rd (home turf) of the map. Dying in your home turf has a reduced chance to break armor.

2. The center region with the Ruins of Power is counted as it’s own territory. The server that holds them gets the stat buff for that center territory. The other buffs are global (finishing bonus, gold/karma/mf/wxp increase).

This naturally helps undermanned servers because they are always backed up to their own 3rd of the map. Reduced chance to break armor means undermanned players aren’t punished so hard for taking risks. Holding the center region maintains relevancy because it now increases karma/mf/gold…who doesn’t want that lol.

Posted by: NornBearPig.9814

NornBearPig.9814

Lord of the Rings Online tried almost the exact same thing a couple years back. If you captured these outposts they would give global stat increase + renown (WvW xp bonus).

The result: the side with more players logged on at a given time would control the outposts, because there are more players to cover the map. And thus they would win fights unless horribly outplayed. It was utterly ridiculous because the only thing you could expect was the undermanned team’s spawn being camped.

Why on earth would you give the winning (aka more populated) side in a 24/7 game a way to snowball even harder. I wish Anet would look at other games and learn from their mistakes…

This is almost exactly what I envisioned WvW when they first announced it way back (known as “The Mists”). Except with PvE monstrosities roaming around to keep people busy when the action dies down, and to encourage groups to go out into the open and be ganked by others. And then a global chat message “xyz’s Guild has taken Stonemist Castle! Your region is blessed by the gods” just like HoH announcements in GW1.

Either way, sounds much better than what we have now.

Method to decide the Leagues

in WvW

NornBearPig.9814

Look at Anvil Rock, the lowest ranked server in NA, getting 95ppt and NOT QUITTING. Their 139K score is higher than four other servers, one of which is #7 Maguuma. Anvil Rock will probably never get to the 272K score that TC has, but if AR does better with the addition of a handicap than BG/JQ/SoR/TC/FA/DB with their handicaps, AR should get the rewards they deserve.

I hope those rewards will pay for their massive repair bills.

How do I get better gear?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: NornBearPig.9814

NornBearPig.9814

A combination of karma vendors, crafting, and trading post. I wouldn’t buy gear straight from gold weapon/armor smiths unless you are really pressed for time as they aren’t a good value for the gold you spend.

Every time you complete a heart or come across a karma vendor, check to see what equipment he has. You won’t get everything you need from karma vendors, but it’s a cheap way to save gold when there is something available you could use. Later in the game you will be able to farm tons of karma so don’t worry about saving it up early on.

Crafting depends on the crafting profession you choose, and how much you enjoy crafting. The nice thing about crafting is that you level up while doing it, so it’s not time wasted sitting in a crafting hall. However, if you hate crafting then just don’t do it.

The trading post will get you most everything you need, but the price may not always be low. It is the most convenient of the 3 (besides weapon/armor smiths) but I would prioritize 1: karma vendors, 2: crafting (if you don’t hate it), and what you can’t or decide not to get from those you can complete your gear with 3: items bought off the trading post.

Rangers deleted from pvp, again

in PvP

Posted by: NornBearPig.9814

NornBearPig.9814

I dislike this change.

The Rangers hurt most by this update are the ones who brought along an un-traited spirit as part of non-spirit centric build. Rangers who don’t want to camp one area are now punished for picking a good spot to plant their spirit, because that’s basically 85 seconds before the spirit can be re-cast if it is not killed, when 60 seconds was already quite long. Now the ONLY reason I would ever take a spirit is for a fully traited spirit build.

The petting zoo needed to be toned down because it was brainless and gimmicky, even if it could be dealt with. The only real skill factor in spirits is how you position them – did you not take note from nature spirits in GW1?? Unbound trait is the offender here, perhaps you should look at that.

I know this is balance for SPvP, but you need to consider WvW and PvE that don’t always involve camping a single location.

Method to decide the Leagues

in WvW

Posted by: NornBearPig.9814

NornBearPig.9814

I’m worried more about the rank 13-15 servers.

At least in T1, those servers are close to maxed out on population, so an increase in transferees will only increase the wvw queues if the server isn’t already “full”. However the rank 13-15 servers probably have alot more room to grow, and likely will once the bandwagon arrives. This will create an even greater disparity between the top and the bottom within that league.

Well asking for good survivability, good damage, and good mobility is like asking to be good with everything. Maybe prioritize which is more important to you.

Warrior is good burst and survivable, but not as agile. Ele/Thief is agile and burst, but can’t take many hits. Ranger is survivable and agile, but not so bursty.

What does it really mean to be balanced?

in PvP

Posted by: NornBearPig.9814

NornBearPig.9814

Far right is ideal, but impossible in a game with multiple ways to win. Therefore the far left exists to shake things up and keep it interesting, but shouldn’t be the determining factor in most games.

I think Dota has a good mix because every game starts by drafting, so you can prevent getting dominated by the far left aka “build wars” like what happened in GW1. But the counterpicks still prevent you from running the same build/setup every game.

Necros are tanky casters that typically damage over time with conditions. Eles are squishy and versatile, capable of high burst.

Both can be played supportive. Necro relies mainly on slot skills and staff for support and it a bit more offensive in its application. Elementalist switches to water attunement for support, then to another attunement for damage and tank.

So if you want more simultaneously dpsing tanking and supporting, then necro. If you want to switch between different “modes” that specialize in dps (fire/air) support (water) tank (earth), then ele.

Ele, Mez, and Necro are the 3 typical ranged magic damage dealers. However ele is the squishiest.

I think you should stick with your Ele if you truly love the archetype, it is the highest skill floor class so you might not have used it effectively.

But if you really want to change then I’d say Necro. It is the tankiest of the three, has the lowest skill floor (not lowest ceiling), but relies mostly on conditions to kill stuff rather than burst.

Nica, would it help if they designed heavy armor as slimmer but not to fit around curves/breasts, but instead focused on things you mentioned such as ribbons, bows, engravings, crowns, etc.

I say because the whole point of heavy armor deflecting blows not just by being hard to crack, but disguising the form of the wearer making it hard to aim for the right spots, and allow the enemy weapon to slide off in the wrong direction by being bulky and not chopping off anything. “Form-fitting” is the complete opposite of what many heavy armors are supposed to be.
