Oh, yes, I don’t mean to diminish their accomplishments, I just don’t think that aspect of play is good for the game. Players should obviously use whatever tactics ANet allows them, I just think this is a sort of tactic that needs some better limitations or counters.

Oh, that doesn’t seem right to me, considering how rapidly those things can destroy a base’s defenses, they shouldn’t be so easy to set up, I think. Like you shouldn’t be able to pull materials from one map to get a head start on another. I guess that’s my major design issue with WvW in this game, it seems very difficult to hold anything for any length of time, most sites take a lot of time and effort to upgrade or put down roots, but only minutes to collapse complete from a concentrated effort.

I don’t think that zergs should be able to function like a Tsunami, just sweeping across a map in under an hour and laying waste, but rather it should be a deliberate process, in which it’s very difficult to take location C without first securing and entrenching locations A and then B. Often that seems to be the way it works, but there are apparently some mechanics that allow for all that to collapse in a heap.

There is a lot of prep involved in that kind of rush

Lol, I suppose, but I would have thought that they would need at least a single supply camp to do it though, maybe even a single tower to their name. They just appeared out of nowhere.

Consider that while all professions don’t have equalized downed state skills (not that their skills are equalized in any other situation), not all professions are meant to spend an equal amount of time in the downed state.

I’m not really sure what you mean by that. Aside from Warriors, who can do their “suicide push” move, every class spends about the same amount of time downed as any other, the move timers are all about the same, and the conditions for popping up are about the same.

As far is it being too hard… some one suggested how to do it in this thread very easily…

1. Same downed health in WvW as sPvP
2. Don’t allow in combat rez from full death.
3. Remove PvE rally in WvW
4. Each additional rezer beyond first should increase the rez speed by less and less.

No. If people can manage to rez a dead player during a pitched battle then they deserve to have that person around. If you manage to kill another player, or even mob using only weak-sauce downed state attacks, you deserve that rally. If a bunch of players manage to lock themselves down in a single location and not get annihilated with AoE, then they deserve that rez.

How about this:

1st: Go up
2nd: Stay
3rd: Go down

Sometimes the best soltuion is the most simple one.

the problem with that is that in most cases that would mean that the 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th, 20th, and 23rd teams would almost always stay exactly where they were (in the blue slot), while the 3rd and 4th teams would just alternate in and out every other week. “upsie/downsie” really only works well in one-on-one match-ups.

I logged on this morning when I woke up and CD was controlling all three keeps in FABL, so I figured they might have a shot at advancing further north. I stuck around and chipped in, and we managed to flip Longview, and then all the available supply camps, and then Cliffside, holding the whole map. . . for about fifteen to twenty minutes. Then IoJ came out of nowhere, and without flipping a single camp they would show up at keep doors with a half dozen golems and roll it over in about thirty seconds per gate. By the time I was packing up for the day they’d managed to take over each of the major locations over the course of about thirty to forty minutes. I know I don’t WvW a whole lot, but isn’t that messed up? I mean, there should be some sort of prep time involved or something.

What is “more tactical” is having the choice and option to do either. Channeling a finisher is not always the best choice, in fact it is usually the worse of the two choices in mass PvP, since focus fire will kill someone faster than anything but a quickness stomp. Stomps act as hardcounter to healing and various evasive tactics and is usually faster than attacking someone to death solo and slower than attacking someone to death as a group, it is a good tradeoff.

Meh, it just seems to “cheap.” Some classes are really good at avoiding a stomp, with a good KB or run move, but other classes really have nothing to do against them, which is a bit unbalanced. Classes tend to be roughly equally as good at dealing with raw attacks though.

I agree with this. Match-ups should be fairly random, with a guarantee in the system that:
1: You will never face the same team twice within the same monthly period.
2. You will be each color at least once per five week period.
3. After each team has faced each other team at least once (every two months or so? Maybe the last week of each third month?), the win/loss points are tallied, and a “finals” round is started, in which teams are matched based on the scores so that the best fight against the best and the worst against the worst.
4. Whichever teams wins on each server in those weeks, all their players who meet a certain participation level that week (based on kills, events won, etc.) will receive a small prize of some sort, with slightly better prizes for the better servers (nothing crazy, but maybe some bonus HoMs, or rare mats, or a boss chest, that sort of thing).
5. Only players that stayed on that one server for the entire “season” run would be eligible for the bonus prize (or perhaps for at least half the weeks or something if that is too harsh). This would be necessary to prevent people “hopping” to the highest rated servers at the last minute, if you don’t play the season you can’t get the ring.

I second the idea of keeping the downed state but removing the “Finish him.” move. That would force players to knock down the player’s health, rather than just channel the finisher, and would be more tactical.

Now a 5th Map for WvW which would be completely submerged might be amusing if Anet made it, balanced classes, and allowed new “under water” siege and the like.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Quaggans guarding the towers/keeps and such even. (It could be interesting if they ever did it.)

That could be pretty fun. Have islands on the fringes, have underwater caverns where you pop out of the water and fight “on land” in the caverns over a central “keep” structure, adapt siege to work in the water, etc. It’d be a lot of work though, I would expect it if and when we get around to the Deep Sea Dragon and Largos storylines.

I hope I am just pointing out the obvious here, but under each skill, there is either a red line visible, or it’s not. When it’s visible, you are out of range.

Lol, sure, but that’s a very binary thing, if you’re out of range, you can’t tell whether you’re 5ft out of range or 15ft out of range, and staring at the toolbar all day is a boring way to fight. When on land, it’s easier to tell distance, since you can use the ground for reference, but in the water, how do you tell, on sight alone, whether that’s a maximum scaled Asura that’s 1200 range away, or a minimum scaled Asura that’s 900 range away?

There should be some better way within the active play field to tell, like maybe icons that pop above nearby character’s heads when they are 1200, 900, 600, or less distance from you, or like each time you hit an attack key while out of range of a target, it “pings” a little graphic flare at the attack’s maximum range so you can see where that would be (only you could see it).

Thief is a good example of a profession that has huge swings in effectiveness for underwater combat. On one side, there are a couple weapon skills that can be chained for incredible effect to the point that they’d probably be utterly broken … if every other skill wasn’t utter garbage. Utilities are even worse, completely removing stealth and evasion skills from the equation for a profession that relies on stealth and evasion for survivability. Better hope you’re not heavily invested in traited stealth, since the only way to get there underwater is to burn your heal.

I had thought thieves were dead meat in water for a while, until people pointed out how useful the Spear 3 and 5 can be. Then I realized they are very OP in water against mobs, if you’re careful, at least. It’s trickier in PvP though, since enemies are less obliged to sit around in melee while you slaughter them, and Speargun is a bit blowful for offense.

But yeah, the main problem with underwater combat is that the underwater specs do a poor job of mirroring the land ones. The two big builds for Thieves are Stealth, or Condition. As you note, Stealth is a bust in water because almost nothing grants it, and Condition is poor too, because while some attacks apply conditions, they don’t do so nearly as effectively as land skills do, and the bread and butter attacks don’t do any.

It would improve water thieves considerably if the bleed on Harpoon1 was a bit longer, or sent double stacks, if Spear 3 did a single longer poison AoE rather than a trail that only applies 1s each tic, If either Spear 3 or 5 were to apply a bleed effect on each hit (making 5 like Death Blossom), and if Spear 4 were made to stealth on a successful hit.

Then just make it so that moves like Shadow Refuge, Smoke Screen, Blinding Powder, Thieves Guild, Needle Trap, Caltrops, and Dagger Storm all work underwater. I don’t see they they can’t, other classes have similar underwater effects. Part of it I think they probably will get to in a future balance pass.

Part of it though might be deliberate, the stealth part at least, since a Thief that is able to stealth as freely in water as on land would be much harder to track, since they can not only move left and right, but also up or down to throw the opponent’s eye. It’s kind of necessary that they allow for high-stealth underwater thieves though, just based on the builds. If they have a problem with that, then maybe they could make an alternate stealth effect when submerged, where instead of being completely invisible, you’d just have that “Predator” effect, but could still use all the special attack and traiting benefits of being in stealth, and maybe get a Protection buff or something instead to make up for still being visible.

I like it well enough, but it could definitely use improvements. It’s much better than Champions Online, at least.

The main thing they need to do is make ALL Utilities, especially the Elites, work underwater, or at least provide a free alternative. I mean, if they can’t get, say, the Golem Suit Elite work underwater, they should at least make it so that you can slot the golem suit anyways, and if you click on it, something happens that is just as useful.

Also, the game needs to provide a better feedback mechanism for ranging underwater. Without proper landmarks it is much harder to gauge distance to target under water, and they need to figure out some better way of depicting this so that players have a better feel for what they can hit with their attacks, and which enemies can hit them.

And of course a balance pass is in order. Some characters I feel very confident underwater. Others I feel very wary. I don’t know that all weapon sets are properly fleshed out. I know that my Thief is reasonably competent in a fight, and practically indestructible if I choose to run instead.

My shark loves to cuddle me back to life!

But a lot of it is probably also a L2P issue. Not many people spend a lot of time underwater so they usually don’t have a clue what their abilities actually do so they’re just randomly mashing buttons. Next to that they’re usually swimming around with some level 20-50 junk weapon they never bothered to replace.

Yeah, this is a big part of it too. Depending on your starting zone, you might not encounter more than a minute or two of underwater combat until well into your 20s, and even by endgame you might spend less than 1% of your time wet. I upgrade aquatic weapons with the best substitute I pull as random drops, but it might be a while between pulling a specific drop, and I never bother to shop around for one. There’s also the face masks, which replace helmets when you go under, and I bet there are a lot of casual 80s that are running around with the starter version, missing out on a large chunk of armor and stats when underwater. Make sure to track down the rebreathers for your level at least at around 50 and 80.

Why is selling a Legendary on the TP ok?

My theory with gold is that if I have more gold that it would take to buy the gear/items I want, I’ve wasted my time in making that amount…after I have the stuff, a pile money is pointless. I guess anything we do in the game is making money, but I’m not going to focus on money-making unless I have something to spend it on.

Yeah, I can’t say as I’ve put any effort into it either, I haven’t “farmed” for gold, or dived into market manipulation or anything (which is why I’m sitting at less than 50g between my characters), but I do like having a surplus, it makes it easier to splurge on things when they account for only 0.1% of my fortune, rather than 1% or 10%. I like being liquid.

I like having something that is goal/accomplishment oriented rather than just doing (grinding) whatever activity piles up gold fastest. Even the process of crafting a legendary is far from this. It’s far easier/faster to buy T6 fine mats and precursors than it is to try and acquire them on your own. But, in my opinion, it’s a dull and much less interesting process than this ‘scavenger hunt’ style of legendary crafting we’ve been told about.

And fair enough, but the goal of “crafting one or more Legendaries” is still a goal, still equally as difficult a goal, whether or not the goal of “to purchase a Legendary using cash” is also an available goal.

There are achievements for doing each possible story step, which even if you do it very efficiently would take at minimum 15 characters.

I like that idea. Putting a difference between crafting and buying would be great. It could even be two seperate achievements, which would be encouragement to keep the weapon versus selling it.

Perhaps, although I think having the shiny weapon is reason enough to keep it. I wouldn’t ever go to the trouble it takes to craft a Legendary in exchange for an achievement alone. If it were possible to craft and sell a sword that just looked like the generic white sword, and somehow (non-exploitatively) get 2000g+ for it, then I wouldn’t avoid doing so just because it would give me an achievement to soulbind it, but I might choose to keep the crazy glowy sword even if it meant passing up a fortune.

I wouldn’t mind more separation between pve and wvw either. Not sure if it’s possible with the game mechanics, but would be nice to have the spvp skills/gear system applies to wvw while still allowing you to gain experience toward pve level. What I really don’t like with the current setup is wvw counting for exploration. My server has been green for weeks, but thankfully I had most of the other team color areas done before this started.

Oh, I feel you, I’m in the same boat. My server’s been blue or green for weeks, and I’m exactly two PoIs from World Completion, both of them deep into the red borderlands. I just want WC though, I’m still way off from having the other resources necessary for a Legendary and don’t care enough to put serious effort into it.

Anet should have went route from the start, if they intended on them being available on the TP. They created the idea of legendaries meaning something more than just a weapon you buy with gold, and of them being the ‘ultimate prestige" items in the game.

Eh, there’s some merit to that, I suppose. One thing I do believe is that the achievement tied to Legendaries should be based on the crafting, not the equipping. If you CRAFT a Legendary, you should get the shiny icon on the front page and the little achievement in your hero panel. If you buy a Twilight, you can run around with a glowy skybox sword and look cool, but you should not get the internal achievements for it. If it doesn’t work this way already (I haven’t seen anything either way on the issue), then it should work this way, and this would seem to be a thing they could activate retroactively.

Either way though, whether or not the game mechanically celebrates the effort put into crafting a legendary, YOU know whether you crafted it or not, and if you did, then you can feel a level of pride because you know the effort you put in. If, on the other hand, you bought the weapon, then YOU can feel a level of pride because you acquired the amount of gold necessary to buy something so horrendously expensive. Either way, you shouldn’t just your own sense of worth over it by what others think about you, that’s just unhealthy.

Nothing to work for in this game that you can be sure was earned not bought. Sure, dungeon gear, I guess, meets that criteria. But it’s so easy to get. This’ll be the death of this game.

Why? Why does it matter? Why would having items that can only be acquired through effort lead to more people playing the game for longer? For the person who would buy a Legendary, would they have likely played long enough to craft it themselves otherwise? And if so, then why wouldn’t they play equally as long without a legendary being in the distance? For a player that crafts their own legendary, are they less likely to do so knowing that it’s available for an obscene amount of gold instead? If so, why are they playing a game when they only seem to care about status? If they are more concerned about status than having fun then playing a game is a complete waste of their time. Such people would be far better served getting a real job and earning real status that people will recognize off the server. If you’re going to play a game, play.

You can buy a solidly functional set of orange 80 everything.

Truth. I didn’t realize this at first, but soon after hitting level 80 I bought a full set of level 80 armor for well under 10g total, and then promptly transmuted it to look like gear from 40+ levels down the chain. My only gear at the moment that took any sort of necessary “effort” beyond gaining gold (which is effort in itself) was my Mystic Knife, and there are weapons of similar strength available for a few gold anyways. But I got all that stuff over a month ago, and I’m still playing, even though I’m not making any significant progress towards a Legendary, nor towards Fractal rewards at the moment. I would suggest getting an alt, they are a lot of fun.

I would love to see legendary weapons take nothing but account bound items to craft, require things from every aspect of the game (except for maybe sPvP, since it is treated as a whole other game already), and are bound themselves when crafted. I like this mainly because that was the originally announced intent for these weapons. It also keeps the gem (and 3rd party) gold market out of the legendary process completely, which is still going along with the original concept that “you can’t just buy a legendary”.

I’d like to see WvW and PvE separated further in future updates. I don’t think players should have to be accomplished in both to gain ultimate-tier rewards. And note that when I say that I mean it both ways, I think these rewards should be available entirely through WvW if that’s the playstyle you enjoy, but I think that even the fairly limited WvW requirements of current Legendary recipes are more than there should be.

Really though I just reject this whole idea of gear “saying something” about the player. The only thing gear should “say” about a player is what their style sense is, can they coordinate a good outfit using the tools available. There should not be “hood ornaments” that a player can just slap on and say “Look at the package I’m swinging here!,” because the whole idea of doing that in a game is just ridiculous. Legendary weapons are just really cool weapons. They look really cool, and they should take some work to get, but there should be no indication, implied or otherwise, that the holder of those weapons is in any way superior to those around him. There’s no point to that sort of attitude.

It’s because it is directly contrary to the point of legendary weapons. All that crap the devs said about respecting someone with a legendary is pointless. There is no way in PvE to distinguish yourself from an 15 year old with an insane allowance that buys a legendary from a GS. They should’ve been Account Bound from the start.

It’s not jealousy for me. It’s the fact that it undermines the whole process.

Why should you care whether someone can distinguish you from a 15 year old with an insane allowance? Do you think that earning a Legendary somehow makes you better than that 15 year old? More worthy of respect? All it means is that you’ve spent hundreds of hours playing a video game. If you had fun doing it, awesome, that is the point. If you did it so that other players would recognize the prodigious girth of your kitten, I think you’ll be significantly disappointed.

There have been so many items listed on the TP that should not be there. From karma-only cooking ingredients, to items that don’t even exist ingame, but were left in the TP database.

Yeah, but I don’t think those items actually exist, they just got glitched onto the TP listings. If Legendaries are not Account/Soulbound (and they are not) then there’s no reason you can’t list them. Anything you can’t list is typically account-bound.

I do have one question, though. Were they always able to be listed on the TP? We suddenly have buy orders popping up, but I’m fairly sure no one had bothered to place one till very recently. I would expect that there be at least a few ridiculously low buy orders listed since shortly after release. Perhaps I recall this incorrectly, but did searches for legendary weapons (by name) not return 0 results previously? This should at least give a listing of the item with 0 avaiable, right?

It’s possible nobody tried it yet, or perhaps items only show up for purchase orders if at least one has been made available for sale before, and people only just started putting them up.

But this information from the support liason still goes against previous information from game designers.

You say that, but it isn’t so. It goes against what you interpreted their prior statements to mean, which is different than it going against their exact words. I’m not saying your interpretation is an unreasonable one to take based on their statements, but it is unreasonable to continue to cling to them after they’ve clarified their intent.

The more damaging aspect to the economy would be the illegitimate gold selling market. We know it’s there, and we know it offers a lot better dollar-to-gold ratio. They are already effecting the crafting end of the legendary market by botting materials and pushing Anet to make changes to the loot/drop rates to combat them. Of course, this will happen whether or not legendaries can be bought gold, but having what Anet designed to be the most sought after items in the game available for gold gives more incentive to buy this “cheap gold”. This will likely end in an account termination (and the total loss of a legendary weapon that a legit buyer could have purchased), but people still do it.

Sure sure sure, but there will always be a market for gold, having legendaries available via gold will not significantly drive up the demand for gold. They can’t fight gold selling on the demand side, they have to fight the botting side, and they seem to be very serious about doing so. I certainly see less bots around than I used to, and their impact on the market seems much less significant.

How does zerging in Orr for two or three weeks and running WvW JPs qualify someone as worthy of a Legendary?

Because those are serious, worthwhile ways to spend one’s time. Making money is not. >: [

The devs have mentioned this, it’s a “work in progress” bug. They are rebuilding the previews in a way that lets them use previewing on the TP (which is good), but in the process it broke cross-class previewing (which is bad), but it should work again once they get everything working (which is very good). They might even have it fixed by the next major patch. In any case, it’s not currently working as intended, so don’t worry.

Auto-maxed range ground target attacks

in Suggestions

Posted by: Ohoni.6057

Ohoni.6057

There are a ton of attacks in this game that use those green/red AoE targeting circles, or sometimes lines. The circles turn green to red when you’re out of range, which is nice, but with a lot of abilities in pitched combat situations, or in the case of buff fields when you’re running from place to place, getting the pointer to exactly the maximum range you can fire can be a serious pain.

My suggestion is to make it so that if you point your attack in a given direction, and you place the pointer outside the attack’s maximum range, then instead of saying “Out of Range” and not firing, it does fire, to the point at the exact edge of its range in that direction.

By that I mean that if you have, say, Cluster Bomb, 1200 range arrow shot, and you point it at 2 o’clock, and you put the pointer 600 range away, then the attack would aim for that exact spot, 600 range away. If, on the other hand, you moved the cursor to a point 1800 range in that direction, then the shot would fire at the point exactly 1200 range in that direction.

If you’re trying to drop a speed buffing field ahead of you as you run, you just point vaguely in your direction of travel and it would drop as far ahead as it can.

Of course, this would only work for ground targeting. Using the abilities to target elevated positions would still work as they already do. It would also only need to worry about distances within, say, 3000 range or so (longer for siege weapons, of course), since nobody’s likely to aim further out than that anyways.

This should also probably be a toggled ability, like the auto-fire option. I can imagine that some people would prefer the old method.

If this can’t be done, then an alternative proposal would be that when you activate a ground target AoE, it could project the normal targeting circle on the ground, but it could also project a green “border line” at the distance of the attack’s range, as if the entire circumference of the range was a massive friendly AoE, and would do so until you fired the attack. This way you could see at a glance exactly where the edge of your maximum range is.

That’s not intrinsic value. That is an effect. That effect says “I have done everything in this game.” That is the point of it looking fancy.

The point of it looking fancy is that it looks fancy. Ask yourself, would people use the Twilight skin if it cost 1c on the TP? Kittens yes they would and you know it. That’s intrinsic value. Now, if it was just some big “#1” icon over your head, something that did nothing but show off how much free time you have on your hands, then you would have a point.

Which would be? I’ve logged in early in the morning, mid afternoon, late afternoon, late at night, later at night, just before dawn, Those words mean nothing to me. Use server time please.

That would be EST, so Server Time +3. My point was that I check in at all hours of the dy, and if there’s some period at which we usually dominate the Red Borderlands, I haven’t stumbled onto it, and should not have been expected to have done so accidentally. If you know of such a time, then feel free to share.

Like hell you are. You’re whining so much I can barely stand it and I almost want to avoid the points I know you need because of it. If this is how you motivate people you would be better off keeping your mouth shut.

I tried that, but six weeks and counting. . .

We apparently had a good chunk of the RB earlier today, but then for whatever reason a ton of players took off for our own borderlands, as if defending them actually mattered for anything. Who doesn’t have whatever blue points they might need by now?

As far as I understand it, there are two goals in WvW, one, to control as many locations as possible to earn victory points for each round, and two, to control the points that are most useful to members of your server. Assuming that you can’t hold everything at once, you’d want to control SM and as many keeps as possible in the EB, and then, with your free time, you’d want to keep as many keeps and forts as possible within the various borderlands, right? But it doesn’t really matter to the point tallys whether you dominate your own borderlands or someone else’s, so if you only have the resources to cover one of them, it’s best to tackle one of the opposing BLs, since you’re guaranteed to control your own for at least a little while each week, and it’s easiest to pick up your own territory later.

I mean, CD’s strategic goals, all else being equal, should be 1. Stonemist, 2. the rest of EB, 3. taking all of red and holding it (since we have been blue or green for weeks), 4. taking all of green and holding it (since we aren’t green this week), and only if all of those have been achieved should holding blue be a concern. It should be an afterthought. Let the other realms have the blue borderlands, I’m sure there are people on FA who still need blue points, why be a jerk about it?

Why is selling a Legendary on the TP ok?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Ohoni.6057

Ohoni.6057

“where did you get that priceless artifact?”
“I bought it on ebay.”

Worth noting that almost every RL priceless artifact currently in existence was, at some point, purchased for money.

It’s nothing like selling crafted gear, because crafted gear doesn’t take any bound items to make, other than the insignia recipes that are extremely cheap

So? What does that have to do with the price of Omnom Berries in Catha? My point was that getting a skillset to 400 is something that takes some player effort, and yet you can still take the fruits of that effort, the T6 crafted item, and sell it if you like. You aren’t forced to go through the effort of mastering that craft t own the resultant item.

Likewise, crafting a Legendary weapon requires a certain investment of time and effort, but owning one does not.

Look, I get it, you’d really like for Legendaries to not be purchasable, so you’re scrambling for any sort of flimsy logical justification as to why they shouldn’t be (beyond just your personal preference on the matter), but you should really just come to accept that they can be bought and sold if the players choose to do so.

In thinking about this whole situation…why can’t I sell dungeon gear, or cultural gear? I did the difficult part to get it, so by the same logic that legendaries are tradable, these weapons should be tradable.

Why not indeed? Now that’s a much better argument, you should run with that one instead, you’ll find a lot more support for it.

If I had to hazard a guess though I’d say it’s because they’re too easy to farm. I mean, if you could sell them on the TP, the price for, say, an AC Chest piece would likely stabilize around a few gold, tops. Probably around the middle of the existing Exotic gear, since you can farm for specific pieces at will. This would mean that tons of players would just buy the pieces they want rather than dungeon crawl, which is a desired activity from the dev’s perspective. Legendaries, on the other hand, require a lot more effort, but a lot less specific effort, so both the developers are not as incentivized to encourage players to do the activities needed for the Legendary (since they are non-specific anyways), and also the price is unlikely to ever fall bellow the “outrageous” level (at least until they make them easier to craft).

So basically, if you could buy AC armors on the TP, then the price would make buying them fairly trivial, while when they allow Legendaries on the market, their price is still fairly “epic,” and therefore not a big deal.

Lol, is it something I want? Sure. But it’s what’s good for the server too. I’m sure I’m not the only one that hasn’t completed the Red Borderlands yet, and holding terrain is good for the server score. It’s not like I’m asking for anything that would make anything worse for anyone on CD.

But doesn’t this defeat the purpose of this weapon being hard to get, instead of just being expensive? If the final product can simply be bought, why can’t the components? You do have a point, but the end result is the same either way…a legendary weapon you can acquire with nothing but gold.

And again, why not? They’ve made the weapon difficult to CRAFT, that’s the goal and the current model achieves it. Making the components tradable would make the weapon easier to craft and would result in more Legendary weapons entering the game world, making them far more common, and therefore far cheaper. That you can sell them on the TP implies that they don’t have any problem with that, if you want to acquire yours through the expense of ludicrous amounts of gold rather than ludicrous amounts of varied tasks, then why not? It’s like complaining that they allow people to sell Oric crafted gear on the TP, rather than forcing them to level their own crafting skills up to 400, buying the karma recipes, and making them themselves.

I can think of a few other instances in GW2 where people combining bound/karma-purchased items in the Mystic Forge has resulted in bans. I do have to say that I do not support these bans, but the fact is that they happened. That sets a clear picture of Anet’s views on using the MF to convert bound items into profit. Everything about this just looks like a massive oversight, not how it was intended to work.

There is a story to that though. It doesn’t have anything to do with people figuring out ways to sell bound items. It has to do with people figuring out how to make easy gold. You used to be able to do all sorts of things with karma gear that you can’t today, but karma can come relatively cheaply compared to gold, and people found ways to purchase a stack of things with karma and then sell them off for gold and fairly easily make a massive amount of money. It was the lack of effort for return that caused ANet to put controls in place, and I don’t think anyone can say that the current method of crafting a legendary is not enough effort to entitle the seller to whatever gold he can get for it.

And they are, in fact, easy to obtain if you sell gems for gold.

The current sell price for a Twilight is 3000g. The current trade price is 1 USD in gems for 1g. That means that buying Twilight with cash money would cost $3000. If someone wants to contribute that much to ANet, more power to them, they’re paying the “monthly subs” for over 200 people and making the game a better place for all of us.

Or have it’s healthbar be independant of yours, so you can sit in it for, say, your 1 minute duration. You die in it? Boom, you’re on your feet again at full hp.

Yeah, maybe, but if it basically gave you a second healthbar that could potentially be very unbalancing whether it dealt much damage at all or not. If they gave it that function then its offensive strength would have to be very low, whereas if it just had a parallel life bar then it could be more offensive. I would give it a high parallel life bar, longer than most people’s normal bars since the normal bar could be healed while the golem’s could not.

Why the same matchup week after week?

Ohoni.6057

The problem with this system is that it would match servers from three tiers (weakest of above tier, middle of tier, strongest of below tier). This would end up creating a lot of blowouts. You already have imbalances within tiers. The rating system does need to be adjusted so servers don’t get trapped in a bubble, but the system still needs to attempt to create close matches.

But even so that would create a better variety of experiences. Instead of being evenly matched every week, you would alternate between being evenly matched, then completely out matched, then completely overwhelming. Each of those types of experiences have their own fun to be had, and it would better distribute which color you had each week, rather than being stuck with the same color for months on end (as my server has been).

They have the same intrinsic value as much much cheaper weapons. Unless you are ridiculously attracted to “it is going to get a stat boost when they release ascended weapons” you really don’t gain any bang for your buck there.

They make much cheaper weapons that make your footsteps glow or that have trails of skybox or that coat you in liquid metal? I’ve been keeping an eye on my options and haven’t seen any so far.

It has two very important things to do with you.
A: You refuse to change servers.
B: You don’t log on during our strongest hours.

Which would be? I’ve logged in early in the morning, mid afternoon, late afternoon, late at night, later at night, just before dawn, I mean, I need to sleep for at least a few hours per day but none seem particularly strong. I’ve logged on when we had three or more commanders in the zone and when we’ve had none, but I’ve never seen DB or any structure NW of Greenbriar under our control. If we have a strong hour, it’d be nice to know when it is. I’m not psychic.

Motivating people is not the same thing as forcing people to do things they don’t want to. Stop acting like you can’t tell the difference.

If people are interested in WvWing then that’s what they will be doing, if not, they won’t. If they are running fractals instead of WvWing then that’s because running fractals is how they’d prefer to spend their time.

To the guy whining about your world completion in red borderlands, shut up please. You are obviously trolling and/or trying to get attention. If you even tried half as hard as you claim to you would have had 100% on all the BLs by now.

You mean if CD was trying half as hard as they claim they are then I would have those unlocked. I can’t unlock a keep myself, no matter how hard I try. I assure you that I am in no way “trolling,” I’m trying to, as Hekatombaion might say, “motivate” some people to take WvW seriously and actually capture some points outside of the bottom left corner of the map. I’m in this thread because this is where CD WvW players go.

If it was intended to be traded, then the entire process of getting a pile of bound materials to craft it is just absurd and completely pointless.

It’s a cost of making it. Someone needs to get all those materials onto a single character at one time. This makes it harder for anyone to achieve than if each component stack could be acquired by a different player.

I mean, if one player could “farm” World Completions because he liked leveling alts, and another could “farm” Badges of Honor because he loved WvW jumping puzzles and fighting, and another could “farm” karma because he spends all day working over Orr or something, and another does dungeon runs all day, every day, and each of those “gifts” were transferable, then between them they could make four or more legendaries far quicker and easier than any of them could do alone.

The current system ensures that a single player needs to be able to do ALL of those things. It just in no way requires that this particular single player is the one who owns the resulting weapon in the end.

Having a golem as an option for a starter pet for an asura ranger is a great idea.

Any option that allows Asuran Rangers only to acquire a given pet, regardless of its function, would be unbalanced, but I’d love to see a golem as a general pet that anyone could use.

The power suit doesnt even have roleplay potential, as it vanishes so quickly. It should have a 5 minute time limit or something so we can actually use it.

Good point. It might be nice if they made it so that it had a near-infinite duration, but took damage along with you, so that it wouldn’t reasonably last more than ten to fifteen seconds in heavy combat, but could last pretty much forever outside of combat (or at least several minutes), and then the timer would only reset when it “died.” (preventing you from chain summoning it).

This might also be nice for other alternate form /weapon replaces, for example instead of the Tomes wearing off after X number of seconds, give it a limited number of “charges”, with each spell costing a different amount, and once they’re used up, it vanishes similar to the Ele summoned weapons.

Why not? They’re hard to make, but if the person who goes through that effort would value the massive amount of coin he could earn from the sale, then more power to him. Really, if someone does a ton of WvW (and therefore has well more than 500 badges) and does constant event farming (and therefore would earn back the million karma within a year or less), then selling legendaries now would probably be a wise investment. If anything, the costs of producing them are likely to fall, not rise, and at some point other, cooler things will be coming out that will devalue them a bit.

You can’t get to these vistas and pois because there are too many players like you on the server. This is difficult because you insist on fighting against the WvW players on the server by not contributing to it, and as you’ve said yourself you don’t even want to WvW once you’ve got the legendary.

But that’s my point, we shouldn’t have to. If the majority of players on the server don’t want to WvW, that should be fine. That shouldn’t prevent them from getting world completion.

And some of you keep saying that I’m “not helping.” I’m definitely helping. I’m not the best WvW player in the world, but I’m pretty kitten good. I kill at a solid rate in general melees, I do great at aiming siege weapons. I scout and call out info. I rez downed players. I help take enemy’s points and hold the ones we’ve got. I pick up supplies when I pass through the camps and spend them where they can be efficiently used. I think I do as good a job playing WvW as most, and I spend about ten times as much time doing so as I would really care to, again likely more than most.

My failure to gain access to these points has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with my participation, or lack thereof, in WvW. There is nothing that I could be doing better that would make any significant difference in whether I would be able to reach those points, which is why I see that as a flaw in the game.

This game doesn’t have raid instances and fractals is the only dungeon that remains relevant beyond some clothes you’d snag for looks- but you’ll have done them all to death by the time you’ve got a legendary… so you basically want to not have to work at WvW so that you can run out of reasons to play the game?

If and when I get tired of PvE, I’ll be tired of he game and gone from it. WvW does not even factor in any way towards by positive impressions of the game, it only serves as a potential negative. At the moment I’m enjoying the game by leveling my alts, I have my main at 80, an alt at 53, 51, 35, two at 25 and two at 20.

First of all, if you were on CD since launch then you had EVERY opportunity to gain every point. We have been every color for a long time. Red, Blue, Green.

For the first few months I was just trying to get by character to 80. I didn’t even know that WvW zones counted towards world completion until about a month and a half ago. It hadn’t even occurred to me that any PvP element would count towards an exploration goal. God forbid I was a new player that had just started the game. I actually think I have the red zone completed on one of my alts, but it didn’t occur to me at the time to get it done on the character that eventually became my main. In the past six weeks that I’d been seriously working towards map completion we haven’t been red once, and people are saying that it’s unlikely we ever will be again. That does not seem to be a healthily working system.

Secondly, please just stop showing up in these threads or leave the server. You are rooting for your own server to lose. I hope you feel ashamed and I wish for people to shun you for being callous enough to do it here on the forums publicaly.

I don’t want our team to lose, I want our team to control the red borderlands. Whether we do that by becoming the red team of tier 3, or the red team of tier 2 (which would be a step up), or we could ball-up and actually take some of those keeps for more than ten seconds, or ANet changes how they order the colors to give everyone a chance at world completion, I couldn’t care less. I’d rather our team not lose, but if ANet says “your team needs to lose in order for you to get world completion,” then Anet is saying our team should lose.

I checked in several times today and the Red Battlegrounds were in breakout mode, so if you’re doing as good as you claim, I’m seeing no evidence of it. Last night there were several points where the DB outer walls were breached, and yet all the three available commanders were goofing off at the NE supply camp instead of even bothering to take the inner walls or defend the blue trebs at Greenbriar.

Unless the tier is extremely unbalanced each server will likely have the northern holdings on their own borderlands when they have a playing population in WvW. Just pick a red server in the top few tiers, get your god kitten points and transfer back to CD in a week. If you had listened to the like 20 people telling you to do this since god knows how many weeks ago nobody will be having this discussion.

This shouldn’t be necessary. The game should work without requiring server transfers to do it.

FYI your server CD is very competitive and has been doing very well in the tier especially in the first few days, if you actually work as hard as you say you do in getting the points I don’t believe you will have problems.

Do you even play WvW? Personal effort plays very little role in achievements. If you have a dozen or two other players that are actively pursuing the same goals, then maybe you’ll accomplish them. If not, then no matter how good you are or how hard you try, you’ll never get close.

Patience. I got my map complete while on CD. It was back when it was TC, CD, and FA. In the middle of a heated battle in the FA garrison. I literally had to fight my way up to the vistas. Tons of FA, maybe about 15 of them, were camping up on the roof for my very last spot too, tons more on the ground. I got killed literally right in front of the last vista too. Luckily I had some teammates come up shortly after and pick me up and the fight continued and wiped them long enough for me to grab the vista, hit ESC to stop the vista view cam, and continue the fight. After grabbing the vista I noticed we were not only fighting FA but TC was in there too. If I recall TC did end up taking it but it was an epic battle and a memorable ending to my map completion.

That’s how I got Garrison too, except that I didn’t die doing it, but I’ve never seen the inner walls of Dreaming Bay breached.

Just go out there with groups going where you need to go, focus on killing those in your way instead of focusing on the end prize and you will eventually get it.

Sorry you feel this way but pvp players have to do a lot more pve then you have to do pvp to get 100% map completion and if your doing it for legendary it’s suppose to mean you excel at all types of the game so fair is fair.

Sorry, but I really hate that argument. It’s really nonsensical. WvW map completion does not in any way indicate how good you are at WvW. You can be the awesomest, most kitten WvW player in the game, capable of taking down a dozen enemies single-handedly, and still find it impossible to get world completion entirely on one server if you keep getting the wrong color and/or your team is incapable of holding the opposing borderlands for any length of time. WvW is a team effort, there should not be individual goals that require your team to be any good. I could take all the red borderland locations in a heartbeat if there weren’t nigh-impenetrable walls in front of many of them.

And as for “WvW players have to PvE too,” I don’t care. If that bothers you, then you fight that fight. I’ll even support you in it. I in no way support the idea of WvW players having to PvE if they don’t want to, but two wrongs don’t make a right and that in no way excuses the uphill battle that is WvW world completion. I’ve now spent more time trying to get a handful of locations in the red borderlands than I spent in the ENTIRE time that I was actively pursing PvE world completion (after hitting 80 and completing the story, I mean).

I’m not even working towards a legendary seriously, I don’t have anywhere near the Medals needed, nor the precursor, gold, or lodestones I’d need, that’s not the point. I just want world completion for its own sake. I’ve got 99.9% of it and resent the game stonewalling me over that last 0.1%.

If you don’t have to do map completion for a legendary then I don’t want to have to do any of that mat gathering for it. Let’s not make them take any karma either, and let’s remove precursors as well. I don’t really care for any of those gameplay elements so why should I have to do them?[/dumb]

I never said anything about legendaries, I was talking about map completion. I’m an explorer, not a weapon crafter.

So I wouldn’t expect high tiers to have anything like that.
If you’re actually checking very often you shouldn’t have any problems getting points in the lower halves of maps. Those all flip rather frequently at this tier. Getting the points in an enemy garrison and north towers would be the only places you really have to WvW a lot to get without actually switching colors. I wonder why you don’t have a hard time getting the deep points in green territory on eternal battleground though. Even when both servers would focus on TC we wouldn’t take those.

Not true. I’ve been checking constantly for weeks, CD is blue, Dreaming Bay is almost constantly in Green hands, and when it’s not, it’s in red hands. Longview has almost always been in red hands, once or twice in green. I’ve never seen them in blue hands, even when I’ve tried to help take one of them. I only have Garrison because TC breached their walls a few weeks back and I was able to juke in during the chaos and score both viewpoints, but that’s much harder to do on the smaller forts and keeps.

I wonder why you don’t have a hard time getting the deep points in green territory on eternal battleground though. Even when both servers would focus on TC we wouldn’t take those.

There was a point a few weeks back where for whatever reason CD held most of the EB. Over the rest of that week things shifted around, Mendon’s Gap actually took the longest to become available. The thing is, EB zergs tend to be much more effective, the ones that populate the red borderlands tend to be lackluster to non-existent, and for whatever reason seem fixated on the NE resource camp, wasting a ton of time capturing it or defending it while completely ignoring the west side of the map.

On the other hand, taking in that we are a fairly competitive WvW server and you aren’t interested in that game element what’s keeping you here? Seems you’d be happier with a more PvE focused server where jumping puzzles are the only thing you aren’t guaranteed to get after putting a lot of hours into it.

If CD were a competitive WvW server then it would be doing better. A server isn’t defined by how good they are at WvW, and I chose the server well before WvW even started.

It could be worse, you could be a WvWer and forced to PvE. You need to do map completion on 4 maps in WvW. How many zones is there in PvE? How many bloody heart quests do you have to complete? Seriously, suck it up and just play the game, you will get your completion at some point.

Yes, but PvE map completion is entirely based on player skill. You can get full PvE map compilation based entirely on your own skill. Besides, it is an exploration achievement, so why should a WvWer even care?

If it were as easy as you make it seem “oh, just get in there and do some WvWing, you’ll have those points in no time!” then sure, whatever, but I’ve spent about a dozen more hours WVWing than I’d care to in a lifetime, and gotten nowhere. This is a game, it’s meant to be fun. It shouldn’t be cramming players into gameplay elements that they don’t want to play for any more than the absolute minimum amount of time. This is not working.

Asuran Racial skills

I’m mostly interested in hearing people’s opinions of the Elite skills, is the D-Series golem worth using? I’m currently running an Asuran Guardian, and could pick that ability up, but I’m not sure it’d be worth it. I’m currently using the Tome of Wrath, but wasn’t terribly impressed with it.

More broadly though, what do you guys think about Asuran racial abilities, compared to class-based abilities and other races’ abilities? I know the racials are meant to be a bit weaker than class abilities, but are there any that really stand out when used in a certain build? I actually have three Asurans, a Thief, a Guardian, and an Engineer, so any Racials that would be worth slotting on them over other options would be nice.

No, would much rather the legendary remain a symbol of mastery of the entire game. (PvP, Crafting, PvE/Exploration) People who can’t master the ENTIRE game don’t deserve to tote around an item saying they have.

Then don’t complain when people who don’t have any interest in one of those things, but do have an interest in getting a shiny Legendary weapon, kitten about how they are “playing” a part of the game that is no fun for them, and are annoyed that other players are making it even less fun for them. Newsflash, when you encourage players to do things that they would otherwise have no interest in doing, and that they do not enjoy, they will behave in a disgruntled manner about it.

Those are PvP rewards. Legendary weapons are about showing that you have at least participated in the whole game.

500 MoH is not “participating,” that’s playing a LOT. I don’t WvW a ton, just enough to get most of my World Completion (three points to go to 100%) and get the monthlies each month, but I’ve only accumulated about 75 MoH, so it would take probably a hundred hours or more for most players to earn a full amount through combat, that’s more time than most people spend completing entire single player games.

Their are plenty of actual PvP objectives to complete that don’t need WvW. The problem is non-PvPers that feel entitled to PvP-related rewards.

No, the problem is rewards that involve PvP that PvEers would have any interest in. If a PvP activity is required to buy things like Siege recipes, or to buy fort upgrades, or other rewards that ONLY benefit your PvP experience, I don’t think you’d see any PvEers complaining about how unfair it is that they need to PvP to get them. The problem is that PvP is required to get weapons that look very cool, even if you never enter a PvP map again after earning one.

So no, so long as rewards that require PvP are rewards that are useful or interesting to people outside of PvP, PvEers have every reason and right to complain about the methods for acquiring them.

WvW-ers have to do dungeons for their monthlies, they have to do PvE World Completion for their Legendaries, and they need a whole lot more funds that are much more easily available from PvE to even gear themselves. Do these WvWers endlessly complain about their entitlement issues?… I haven’t seen it.

I have seen complaints about this, and to my mind they are fully justified. I think that the monthy should be like the Wintersday achievement, in which there are say seven different objectives, only five of which you need to complete. “50 WvW kills” could be one of them, but if a PvEer doesn’t want to do that one, he can skip it. “7 Fractal runs” can be one of them, but if a WvWer doesn’t want to do that, he doesn’t have to. Most monthly and daily achievements can be done in both spheres, and for the remainder there should be alternatives.

Likewise, any imbalance in how easy it is to acquire gear in PvE vs. WvW should be corrected. if a player puts in the same time and effort in WvW, he should be able to reap the same rewards.

I’m not arguing that PvE should be more fair than WvW, I’m arguing that both should be fair, but players should only have to participate in either so much as they enjoy doing so.

tl;dr: If an objective is inside a PvP zone, then it is a PvP objective. Expect PvP. If you don’t want PvP then buzz off and pursue goals that are purely PvE.

And again, if you don’t like PvEers messing up your PvP free for all lifestyle, the best solution, for everyone, is to encourage ANet to shut down reasons for PvEers to be there in the first place.

Lol, just because you enjoy PvP doesn’t mean you have to behave like kittens. People can enjoy PvP and also be decent to their fellow players, time for at least a few of you to grow up. It is a PvP zone, and layers should be prepared to PvP, but unfortunately ANet has seen fit to tie numerous PvE activities into the zones, including needing to enter them for World Completion, Monthly Completion, and for Legendaries, so plenty of 99% PvE players are forced kicking and screaming into WvW zones, be prepared for them to complain about it.

If you genuinely want to get with of PvE whiners, petition ANet to remove or create alternate paths for earning the few necessary PvE elements that are woven into the WvW battlegrounds. When only PvP players have any reason to participate in the PvP elements of the game, then you can fairly argue that all such players should be prepared to do PvP when doing activities that have no active PvP element to them.

Wintersday is a letdown compared to Halloween

in Wintersday

Well, I think that Halloween is a more menacing holiday, so it’s easier to craft a “dire” storyline around it. Wintersday is more about fun for fun’s sake, and the events are designed around that. I think that’s better than if we had to push down some mad Krampus or something, and really if they did that every time it’d get stale too.

BLTC typing bug w/ crafting window open

In your crafting window, with the recipe active, right click on the item in question. You should get a “Buy more at Trading Post” option. Click that and you’re there.

Useful, although another reason I have this issue is that I tend to use crafting menus as a replacement for the bank menu, when going to the nearest bank vendor is a hassle. In this case I’m looking at active inventory and comparing it to the TP. This bug makes doing that a hassle.

Best use of holiday clothes?

in Wintersday

Posted by: Ohoni.6057

Ok, so my inventory is full of those socks and hats and sweaters. I had originally thought that they would be best used buying the weapon skins I wanted, but they are going for a quite reasonable price on the TP so that isn’t really necessary.

So I was wondering, what would be the most economical use of my stacks of old clothes? Should I sell them for cash on the TP? Should I use them to buy specific weapon skins and sell them? Should I convert them into a certain type of gift box and roll the dice that I’ll get something worth a lot? Is there something I can dump them into the Mystic Forge to get? Should I horde them in some expectation that the price will rise over the next few months?

What’s the best thing to do with them?

Also, I have a bunch of unopened Medium and Giant gifts, are those worth hoarding or selling or should I just crack them all open?

Thieves - this is getting ridiculous

Shadow Refuge is what I use to escape, I just forgot the name like I said, in the part of the quote you decided to leave out to try and discredit me.

I’m not “trying to discredit you,” I’m just pointing out the parts where what you’re saying wouldn’t make any sense if you’d actually tried it.

It’s not really that hard to find a small sliver of space not getting hit by AOE (you can see all the circles after all) and just stand there until I get my full stealth.

If so then you aren’t facing very skilled opponents, since most AoEs can hit every corner of a Shadow Refuge. To to mention the capability of just running in there and swinging around with melee attacks. Not every AoE attack is a ground targeted circle attack. If you try to take a swing back, you get Revealed and are a sitting duck.

You sound like the one who has not played a high mobility pistol/dagger thief in wvw. I don’t die when they drop hellfire on me in stealth because I simply dodge away once I stealth. I have very high endurance regen via runes and traits, I can dodge very very often.

No, I have very high endurance regen, and even still I can only dodge three times in a row and then I’m down to only one every few seconds. A solid AoE barrage should be plenty, especially if it’s all aimed as a Shadow Refuge.
