The Argument for Tengu/a new race

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I had addressed that too in a previous post in which I was asking the poster to refer to. The impact of a new playable race as a selling point which causes increased sales depends on whether those sales came from existing players who would not have bought the expansion if it had not been included. It would otherwise just be a factor used to purchase an expansion, but not one that would cause players to buy it all by itself.

It’s kind of like if HoT had included Tengu as a playable race. Doesn’t make sense with the story but let’s go with it. All of those that currently own HoT would not count towards the increased sales caused by the addtion of the playable race. It may have caused some players to be more hyped about that expansion but they ultimately bought it without it.

True, there would have been no more HoT sales from those people. But what about character slots? Maybe an outfit or two that looks good on their new characters? Special Tengu weapons in the gemstore? And let’s not forget the other positive effects on the game, such as the economic impact of everyone suddenly gearing up entirely new characters.

Even with the people that didn’t need a new race for an expansion, there would be some gain from a lot of them.

Why the heck the designer put an attack of necro player or somebody who swings her sword.

Looking closely at that swing, I see green and leaves when that guy swings his sword.

The effect in the video just looks like the Reaper GS auto-attack (specifically the first hit of it). The first strike creates a green cloud effect, and little feathers/leaves fly off.

It does? I never noticed, I guess. Thanks.

So, maybe that’s just an important NPC?

So far as I know, no sword skill in the game does that. If I’m right, that means they’re showing a new ability. Either something upcoming for us, or something exclusive to that NPC.

[Edit] And as for that voice at the end? I don’t recall if we heard a voice for the new leader of the Nightmare Court yet or not, but for some reason she’s the first person that sprang to mind when I heard that. She would be an uncomfortable ally indeed.

The Argument for Tengu/a new race

Palador.2170

For those that say that adding a race is impractical because of the armor problem, I would like to counter it by saying that that’s the BEST reason for them to consider adding a new race.

GW2 was supposed to be a game where cosmetics were the endgame. And yet, we’ve seen how far ANet has fallen from that goal. Making new armor, the most basic component of GW2 cosmetics, is too difficult. It’s a failing on the most fundamental level, and one they need to address.

They need to change how they make armor. Bring in more people, get new software, or whatever… Just do what they have to do to make it work smoothly. But that will take money. How do you justify it? That’s right, a new race as a selling point for a new expansion. Now they’d have a cost justification to do whatever it takes to streamline their process, and a chance to get plenty of practice in with the new systems as they fit old armor onto the new race. And when they’re done, they’re set to finally get up to speed on cranking out full sets of armor again.

tldr: Adding Tengu would force ANet to focus on fixing one of their weak points, making armor sets, and give a cost justification for doing so.

I bought this, because I like things like this, but I’m really disappointed in it.

When I first heard about it, I thought it was something where you could tell it something like “Black Diamond”, and it would deliver to you ONE black diamond per day. Or Freshwater Pearl, or Maguma Lilly, or what have you.

I thought it was brilliant, because it suddenly made for a slow but reliable source for such things, putting a cap on just how rare they could be. Prices on those items would slowly drop and stabilize, and any such item that became too rare would become the new thing people would use this for and soon the supply would get closer to the demand.

Don’t get me wrong, I like what this is (though I did expect to have to go back to the board or an NPC to collect), but it’s not what I hoped it would be. Still… maybe next time? With the new expansion on the horizon, HoT exclusive stuff is going to become really, REALLY rare soon.

They could kill him, or just take the bow. Really, Braham isn’t the threat, the bow is. If it disappears, then he’s harmless. (Well, aside from all the Norn (and one charr with pets) that he’ll get killed. But harmless on the ‘end the world’ scale.)

NCSOFT owns ANet (indirectly through a holding company NCSOFT owns outright) but I believe, being NCSOFT’s first acquisition in NA and with former Blizzard “superstars”, ANet negotiated to keep the IP under their name so if NCSOFT every decides to sell off ANet, the IP will go with ANet.

At least that’s the scuttlebutt I heard over a decade ago.

I heard something similar, but I’m not sure I believe it any more. They’re going to be using GW2 characters in that new NCSoft MOBA, which tells me that NCSoft has some solid claim to the rights no matter what happens with ANet.

We have plenty of reasons to go there, though.

There’s the link to the gods, as you mention.

There’s Logan taking over the Pact, which means he may want to take a look at current operations in Orr. Given our close ties to him, and having been a big part of taking Orr ourselves, it makes sense that he’d want us with him.

Orr is also where we killed our first dragon, but we weren’t thinking about the consequences at the time. There’s likely to be a lot of unbound magic left behind, and Taimi may want to examine the site to see if she can get any new data on how dragons are absorbing and passing on magic to each other.

Finally, we need to see if any of the events after Zhaitan’s death have affected the Risen there. If they have, then that means that the dragons that gained Zhaitan’s death powers may be able to influence them. Which would mean that those that gained Mordremoth’s powers may be able to influence Sylvari. That’s really important to know.

I’m sure we’ll go other places as well, but we have good reason to head for Orr.

I think we’re going to see a new map in Orr, one that’s improving after the events of the Living Story. We killed our first dragon there, but did nothing to gather up any loose magic from it, so there’s going to be loose magic in the area to deal with. And if you’re looking for information about The Six, Orr’s the place to dig for it.

Then from Orr, we’ll hop over to Elona.

Caithe also comes back to Dragon’s Watch but gets bludgeoned to death by the protagonist. Because I do not want to suffer a traitor on my team. Then, Rytlock can bring out that old line “I’ll hold her up, and you kill her again!” Then Logan and Zojja would back away slowly and go back to their jobs.

I too don’t like Caithe and don’t want her on our (poorly named) team. But I do want her around.

When she’s sure she’s right, she’ll take off and do her own thing, no matter what. We know that, and it’s time she admitted it. I’d like to see her around working on things in her own way, so that sometimes she’s working in tandem with us, and sometimes working against us. Maybe have her gather a team of her own. We can even help her get started, by giving her Braham.

Now, as to who I want to see back? Riot Alice. There’s more going on with her than we’ve been told, and she seemed to get out of Dry Top in time, so I’m sure she’s around somewhere. Lord Faren as well, again because I suspect there’s more going on there than we’ve been told.

Finally, I want to see those two charr scrappers from the charr “loyal soldier” storyline. I don’t recall their names, but it’s the one where one of them is terrified of ghost cows.

I too want the Labyrinthine Cliffs to return, but I guess I’ll play devil’s advocate here.

First of all, it was introduced during LS1, where things didn’t stay.

Second, it was a festival area, much like SAB. And much like SAB, it has a lot of jumping mechanics for such a small zone. Remember how they said that changes in the game made it hard to bring SAB back? Well, the same very likely holds true here. The zone would need a rework to bring it up to the current game’s speed.

Third, is that the aspect crystals would be gone. Given that you needed those to move around, they would have to be replaced with something else. But what? What would they use to fill in the gaps, and would it still feel like the same zone when they were done? I’ve suggested Asuran devices to replicate the effects of the crystals, but it really wouldn’t have the same exotic feel. Asuran devices are everywhere.

Fourth and finally, the airships are gone. The entire top of the zone would need to be replaced, and the crystal hunt would need fixed. By this point, they’re going to be basically remaking the whole zone, nearly from scratch. It might be worth it if the Living Story went back there for some reason, but otherwise it’s resources better used to make a new map for the LS.

Now, before you say that points 3 and 4 don’t count if they set the zone back to before LS2, I must point out that any lingering LS1 content was moved up to the end of LS1/start of LS2. Southsun is a prime example of this. They won’t deal with Point 2 just to go backwards on this.

I would dearly love for them to bring the cliffs and the vendors there back. They had a great solution for “worthless” items there, and the zone was fun. It’s just that it will take a lot of work and time to get it back. Our best bet is to remind them of how we enjoyed the area, and hope they find a reason to refresh it.

Okay, so if a huge game does not cater to you you will gather your toys and go home?

I think it’s less this specific idea, and more how many good ideas and suggestions are ignored in general.

And that IS a problem.

Over its lifetime, the ANet devs have taken bold steps to move GW2 from it’s rather unique origins and move it solidly into WoW’s shadow. This does broaden the appeal to those more familiar with the WoW mindset, but it also risks GW2 becoming just a second-rate WoW. GW2 needs to shine in order to cast off that shadow, and working more closely with their player base would be a very good start.

Now, I’m not saying that every player suggestion is good. Let’s be honest, there’s a ton of them that are just downright awful in every way. The problem is that the good suggestions are ignored as casually as the bad ones.

Different gender dimorphism or not, it’s innapropriate to have female characters running around with their chest completely exposed. Not to mention they took the effort to cover their chests with their underwear, which explicitly implies bare chests are not appropriate. Even worse is when you look at the Raiment of the Lich of only is the chest fully exposed but it has nipple piercings even. That is NOT appropriate female attire.

I’ve often wondered why they did that with the charr “underwear”, as even just walking around the Black Citadel you can see female charr with partially revealed chests in their civilian clothes.

The truth is, charr females have nothing there to hide and it’s clear that their culture doesn’t expect them to act like they do. Applying human standards to them, and trying to make “female” armor fit them has given some really ugly/mortifying results.

Mind you if we can hold a Giant Charr Meat-fest in June i am all for it.

Sadly, food based festivals tend to work best around harvest time. (Thanksgiving in the USA, for example.) For a summer festival food should be only a secondary part of it and not the main focus.

If we don’t get an old festival back for the summer, I’d love to see the sylvari start one to celebrate their freedom from Mordremoth. It could be one part Dragon Bash, one part contemplative festival of the stars.

How to Deal With AFK Farming

This ideea is one of the worst cases of “cutting the arm to remove a bruised finger” that I have seen in a good long while…

How is removing something that is not necessary “cutting off the arm”? No one has yet given a reason why pets need to be able to attack independently of player action.

Okay. Because Player and Pet may not be in range of the same targets. This is especially true with the Engineer turrets, as they can’t move to follow the player.

Now, with that said… pets are not supposed to attack non-aggro enemies on their own. Yellow enemies and random bunnies should be safe, unless something else starts the fight. Aggro enemies will start the fight on their own once they see a target, so there’s no harm in the pet jumping in against them.

Can someone explain why this turret farm (?) was an issue?
Did they get rich?
Did it over saturate the market?
Did it cause grief?

100% honest no troll question, I play wvw so I’m not clued up on pve matters.

They did not get rich, though it was fairly low risk for the rewards gained, if there was a good farm going to join. (Though you might get killed on the way there.)

It didn’t mess with the market, really. The real prizes in that area are in a spot up the hill, the farm was just producing normal loot for the zone.

It did cause a small amount of grief for those trying to pass through the area, or so I’ve heard, by scaling up any events in the area. I’m not sure I buy that, but I can’t deny it either. However, some people felt that it was too easy, and the Engineers there were really AFK while their turrets did all the work. Also, apparently some people at the farm were being jerks, and while these people were few and far between, they did add to the bad reputation.

(For the record, you can’t go totally AFK and let the turrets do the work. They’re not that tough, and even if they’re not destroyed they don’t last all that long. But you don’t need to pay as much attention as you do during “normal” play, either. So the AFK accusations were half true, at best.)

Were there technical limitations to encasing that entire area with an invisible field that damages only turrets at a rate which makes them last only 1-2 min?

Other than the fact that it wouldn’t have stopped the farm, only changed it?

Take away the turrets, and it will be necro minions. Or ranger pets. Or just a bunch of Guardians with Staff skills and maybe even the occasional spirit weapon. (And before you laugh, have you seen what happens when a bunch of Guardians are using Staff 1 together? Overlapping, rapid fire AoEs with burning does wonders.) Or staff Elementalists. Or whatever.

The problem is that the area is an ideal farm spot, and players will use whatever they can to make an efficient farm out of it. Take away choice 1, and they’ll simply go to choice 2. That’s the real reason why they used the “solution” they did. It’s no longer a good farm spot at all, so problem solved.

It gives me the best chance of getting a hit in, and thus event credit. When you have thirty players trying to get a hit in on three grawl, you do what you must.

Ditto. Drop the two long range turrets, and break out the flamethrower for some easy AoE. It’s really not any different than Guardians spamming Staff 1 as they run wildly about, hoping to score a hit. You do what you have to in events like that to score your event credit.

I also like that the outfit is nearly the same on both genders. I do wish the little bit of “flash” on the female outfit was gone. It’s just impractical. But, at least it’s minor.

I find myself only using axe and pick because the sickle is too slow, and I already could gather unbound.

The sickle is faster when there’s more than one hit on a node, as it takes up to 3 at a time apparently. This is useful on the nodes you can get in a guild hall, and I think some spots in WvW use those as well. I guess it’s just so that character concept and reality can align? Big bruisers should look and carry weapons like big bruisers, and it’s annoying when you have to switch to smaller weapons to fill that role while in combat.

I’m a RPer with far, far too many characters, and for a lot of them the weapon choice is part of the character. Ah, my bad. Yes, more beards please.

And human beards are part of which body part exactly?

In the character creator they’re a separate body part, just like faces and hair. That’s kind of a vital point to the whole request behind this thread, wanting more options to mix and match together. On the races where they’re a part of the face, it comes down to just asking for more faces.

I will however admit that I had forgotten that ears ARE separate on asura. It’s been a while since I made one, and I mis-remembered that fact. So… more ear options for asura of both genders, please.

And what do human females get? And female Asura and female Sylvari.

Why are you excluding male asura and sylvari? As I recall, they don’t get beards, horns, or tattoos either.

The problem is that not all characters will have as many customization options. Maybe for those, they can instead give them a few more faces to pick from? The point is that more options in every category are good. Leaving a category untouched, never to add anything new to it is bad.

Because they both can have beards. At least one male sylvari has a small beard and that can be extended. Male Asura don’t have beards in gw2 but several of the older Asura had a small beard in Guild Wars 1. Here is an Asura male with “muttonchops” like beard and the faces of male sylvari, one in bottom row has the small twig beard.

But in GW2, you don’t get beard options for them. Any “beard” they have is part of the face. If you want it, you have to take that face. Kinda like the makeup on some human female faces.

[Edit] By the way, I really think they should have made ears a separate option for asura, instead of them being linked to the face. More options for mix and match is better.

Sure, why not. Who cares for lore implications, it’s all wonky at this point.

How would reopening that zone and advancing the plot there cause lore problems? I mean, yes, they’d have to remove the big airship and the crystals, but ways around that problem can be found. Maybe put a shrine to the fallen at the top, and use launch pads and such to replace the crystals where they’re needed?

But it only raised questions like what was Zhaitan’s weakness? Battleships? I know people say it’s “unity” or that we weakened him before the fight etc but really give me a break with all that.

Undeath is the breaking of the Life-Death-Rebirth cycle. Remember when we helped Trahearne use Caladbolg to purify Orr? We restarted that cycle for Orr, and set it on the path to slow but steady recovery. We basically poisoned the land against him.

If we had killed him without doing that, it’s entirely likely that he could have just recreated himself out of Orr, just as Mordremoth could have recreated himself out of the Maguuma Wilds.

[Suggestion] Make Celestial Gear Celestial

I would rather see Celestial stay as it is, and maybe have the description changed to “most stats” instead of “all stats”.

Then they can consider a new stat combo that affects “all stats”, with a lower point value for each stat than what Celestial offers, to offset the new stats.

I think Lunar New Year should be moved to the Labyrinthine Cliffs, given that the Zepherites were the ones that might have still been in contact with Cantha, and DR has Wintersday just before. Let’s see the remaining Zepherites rebuilding their lives as best they can, and celebrating a festival for looking ahead and new beginnings.

Dragon Bash should be reinstated and moved to The Grove. It might be more contemplative than before, but I think the fall of Mordremoth should be a celebrated day for the sylvari. Their first holiday. The actual date doesn’t have to be exact, so it would make for a good midsummer festival. (And finding the occasional dragon pinata in Nightmare Court territory would make for an interesting touch.)

Charr could use some more horn options, while we’re at it. But beards first, then horns. Then more norn tattoos.

Most boring race

Norn.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the ideas and lore behind them. It’s just that ANet doesn’t USE it!

I’m beginning to think that the people that made the norn lore are gone, and everyone else at ANet just doesn’t understand it, or is afraid of offending someone with it.

Lore-wise, sylvari should be the most boring race. They only have about 30 years of history to draw on, a single human generation to create their own customs and culture. And yet, being such a blank slate has allowed ANet to use them for all sorts of things. Compare how often you see a sylvari NPC poking around and trying to discover things about the world, versus how often you see a norn talking about their culture and religion. (And no, big and drunk is NOT their culture.)

We need an older norn, one that’s more secure in their legend. Or one that’s willing to see the guild as their legend. Someone willing and able to dispense some grandfatherly (or grandmotherly) advice, who can spend their down time fixing up whatever hovel we scrape together for our guild hall.

Actually… yeah. An older norn caretaker for our guild hall. They can do some repairs, maybe grow a garden, and be our support. The Alfred Pennyworth to our Batman, if you will. And we could move Zojja there, where her friends can visit her while she recovers in a more relaxing setting. It would make for a good excuse for people to stop by the hall to see us and her, making it a great setting for some of the story segments.

(I DO want to see Zojja get better. And her injuries would make an easy excuse to have her voice sound a bit different, so that problem can be gotten rid of finally.)

Ya'll ready to get Kormired again [spoilers]

in Living World

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

By getting Kormired you mean someone else getting stuck with the obnoxious relegation to godhood, right?

If so, then I hope so. It would be awful for us to get stuck with that lemon.

I think it’s more that nobody liked Kormir and she was considered worthless, at best. Less than useless, really. The power went to someone that didn’t deserve it.

Let’s look at the current story line and ask ourselves who would be worthy of getting Balthazar’s power.

Braham? Well, he’s being violent and has a flaming bow, but he’s also acting like a brat and is likely going to get a lot of good people killed. He’s not worthy.

Caithe? Some people think she should be forgiven and others think she should be shot dead and left in a ditch somewhere. Opinions vary widely enough that she might not be a good choice.

Marjory? Well, it would be an odd match for her current class, but she does go into battle swinging a huge sword (imbued with the spirit of her sister), and she does try to think things through. She may not always listen to us, but she does at least try to be loyal in her own way. Worthy enough, I guess?

Kasmeer? Her reaction when Balthazar was revealed makes it clear that she can’t handle the whole issue, and would crack under the strain. Unworthy.

Rytlock? It would be funny to see a charr replace one of the human gods, but he’s the one that has the training and skills that would make him a good God of War. And with a name like “Brimstone”, a good God of Fire, as well. He’s been hiding a secret about his time in the mists, we’ll need to know more about that before we can say if he’s been right to hide it or not. Still, I think he would be worthy.

Rox? Well, she’s loyal and does a good job of pulling her own weight usually. But she’s also very kindhearted and afraid of losing her “family” again. Worthy, but it would be really bad writing to dump that role onto her.

Taimi? Love her dearly, but she would blow up the world trying to find out what she could do with her power. Too curious for her own good, but she is still pretty young. As much as I may like her, I think she’s unworthy.

Canach? Now here we have someone that would make a good God of War. Snarky, smart, and fairly honest with us, he’s been a good companion whenever we’ve worked with him. That doesn’t mean he can’t think underhanded, though. To him, battles are meant to be won, honorably or not. Worthy.

If we were to “get Kormired again”, it would likely be by the power being passed on to the most unworthy of the group, most likely Braham. Or maybe some side character that we barely know could step forward after we’ve won, and be awarded the power for no reason we can see. If the power went to a likable character that has earned a shot at it, I don’t think anyone reasonable would really mind.
