I said I was sceptical it would be a traditional expansion, because Anet like to do things differently.

I don’t mind admitting I was wrong. It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last.

Well, I wouldn’t even call it a “traditional” expansion. No level cap increase, no new tiers of gear, no new continent al a GW1 expansions… I’d say it isn’t a “traditional” expansion, but an expansion nonetheless.

Although, one could then argue what the meaning of expansion is. I mean, each LS update is technically an expansion, but we don’t really call those expansions. I guess it perhaps becomes an “expansion” when the content is boxed or has to be paid for?

It’s not traditional because level cap and equipment tier increases have no place in gw2.
This is a large injection of both new things to do in the game as well as new places to do them, for a cost (likely). That’s an expansion.

Pretty sure a lot of people who want GvG just want the old GvG from GW1 back. If stronghold allows for 2-4 teams of 5 on each side, it sounds like it will meet that need.

Where did you hear it allows for 2-4 teams?

Nowhere, but allowing for 10-20 people per side is the appropriate amount for a decent GvG. 5v5 is hardly a GvG and more than 20-25 per side becomes an unwieldy clusterkitten that will be only fun for a few to play and fun for nearly no one to watch.

If the map’s meant as a way for guilds to combat other guilds, that’s the most sensible way to do it.

Where is the anti-expansion crowd now?

To be fair, we have no idea what the “Mastery System” is nor do we know how it could be used to further allow for horizontal progression. Same for Specializations.

Also, most, and I do mean MOST, of the GWEN armor was reskins of existing meshes that were jumbled up. They had already nearly killed the game with the amount of skills in it by Nightfall, and we’ll never know how much content was simply recycled from “Utopia”, another stand alone game, as there’s never been an official word on how far into development that was before they scrapped it.

I’ll never hold back criticism where due, but we really don’t know nearly enough about what’s coming to throw our arms in the air and shout “s’not enough!!!”

Especially when they haven’t even listed how much this will all cost yet.

This thread got really hostile. Everyone needs to just relax. Enjoy the new things that are coming.

I’m more interested in what is going to happen to legendary prices… Normal skins won’t change that much. Some of the BL skins may move a little, but I suspect they will stabilize pretty quickly.

The current generation of legendaries is probably going to quickly drop in price. I see no reason to have a legendary that anyone can buy off the TP when precursor scavenger hunt is coming with new legendaires. Hopefully they are account bound, and actually take skill to acquire.

Depends on what you mean by skill. The official page lists them as “building new collections that earn precursors to a legendary weapon.” Considering the current collections mostly focus around grinding bosses for that 1/bajillion chance at getting the weapon skin unique to that bag or getting enough gold/loadstones to complete the set.

It’d be interesting if they made it tie in to the possible new "raid’ content but that would definitely be a new direction for Anet to say the least and come with no shortage of saltiness from people who only want to put in the minimum effort to get everything.

The real kicker is that the skill would still be crap even if you could move.

Not to mention:

  • sword #1 still roots the user. quite frankly it’s pathetic this bug is still there 2 years after release.
  • traps still only 600 range – half the range of necro marks even after taking a GM and master trait.
  • pets are still kitten

Axe 5 would definitely be a lot better, still pretty marginally useful, but a lot better. I mean, imagine how much better it’d be if you could use it to create a mobile bubble in WvW to keep your commander from getting focus sniped?

I already use axe offhand on my S/A-GS build just because axe4 is so good in a lot of ways. It’d be nice if axe5 had at least some use as well.

Only issue I can see with Whirling Defense gaining mobility is the warriors continuing to demand Whirling Axe get reflection as well they already compare it to the ranger skill while being ignorant/willfully ignoring the movement interrupting channel on Whirling Defense, while the Whirling Axe (last time I checked) moves, its more targets, and is on a 15 second cooldown base.

They can have a whirling axe as good as a mobile whirling defense when our warhorn is as good as theirs…

Many of us told them so. Nothing else really made sense.

Honestly I did not expect it to be a traditional MMO expansion for the same reasons you stated that you thought anyone expecting an expansion was just hoping.

If anything, the announcement the way it’s phrased, is specifically telling us there will be no expansion. Anyone who expects one with that wording is just living in hope.

The wording talks about new ways to expand the Guild Wars 2 universe. Expansions aren’t new ways to expand it. That’s old school. To me this implies new things that aren’t being done in the industry at least commonly. Ergo, it won’t be an expansion announcement.

I am glad that we were both wrong.

Sorry mate, but I wasn’t wrong. It’s not a “traditional” expansion. No new tiers of gear and no new level cap. I’ve yet to play a traditional expansion without those things.

It wouldn’t even make sense to increase the cap. I mean, how many of us have tons of lvl books just sitting in the bank? Most of the game would meet the new cap withing the first 5 minutes of the xpak’s release.

We probably won’t be seeing a new LS for a while after the pack’s release, but it’s proven to be an effective way to keep peopel playing between massive content injections so I see no reason for them to not bring it back 5-6 months after the pack launches.

I just hope the whole “learn to be druids” thing isn’t limited to grinding crap out in PvE. I’m really hoping they give those of us that prefer to PvP/WvW our own path.

Considering that the Druid play style will might end up being the only zerg/gvg build worth a kitten , I wouldn’t count on it.

I would have loved for them to move the traps to the weapon and give us a staff similar to the Necro staff along with new utilities, but this might end up being just as good provided the Ranger staff has a VERY heavy lean towards group fights with aoe cc/damage.

Balancing issues won’t go away whether or not new classes are added. That’s not really a good reason to not add things.

Of course it is a good reason. The more things are added (whether in the form of new weapons or skills or traits or classes), the bigger the issues become. Just because there are balance issues now and just because there will always be balance issues doesn’t mean that the issues can not become bigger.

So you’re saying it’s better to not add anything because it may get worse? Let’s just stick with the tired, unbalanced mess we have now.

That’s a wonderfully pessimistic outlook. I’ll pass on that.

And go with one even worse? Seems like the wise choice.

I’d say we have too few utility slots in GW2 for traps to be fine. Running with only two traps feels weak. Running with three traps and you have no reliable stunbreaks.

This is only because in order for traps to be good you need to spend 6 points into them, if you could use traps without spending traits into them and the skills being GOOD, then it wouldn’t be nearly as much of an issue.

IE: Behave how signets work now, you can trait them to make them BETTER, but without the traits they’re still solid.

Hopefully at some point they can start adding new weapons and we can get them moved to a weapon that works similar to how the Staff works for Necro. Even if we still need heavy investment, the risk of utility disappearing isn’t a problem.

New class would just create more balancing issues. I have seen many class suggestions over the past two years and none of them have been unique. They’ve all been a blend of two or more existing classes.

It’s almosy always “Death Knight” (because Arah armor and black dye don’t exist amirite?) or misplaced nostalgia begging for dervish or ritualist back while forgetting that those classes ended up being trash because anet had no idea how to balance them.

I mean, ritualist? Really? why exactly would spvp need another turret bunker class?

I’m not an expert on game engines, but my understanding is that the engine is basically the heart of the game. There’s no ability to jump because the engine doesn’t allow it and thus none of the maps have platforms that you could jump to. GW2’s engine is very different from GW’s engine. I don’t think such a move would be possible, even in theory.

No actually converting over the engine is like starting a new game. The thing is, it shouldn’t be as expensive since Anet already has the arts and models from GW2’s development.

What would need to be done if for the programmers to make a new set of codes for the GW1’s gameplay mechanics, and for the artist to design the GW1 zones over again in GW2 engine. Shoot crowd funding can make up for that cost.

You got a couple million dollars in your back pocket to fund that? You basically just explained remaking the entire game all over again which involves thousands of man-hours to make happen. Art teams don’t come cheap and neither do competent programers.

I don’t think you understand what I mean when I say “natural hair”. We have plenty of relaxed, straight hairstyles in game, typically this is attributed as “white people hair”. Black women who want to achieve this look use hair relaxers to make their hair straight like that. This typically damages their hair. However, when she wears her hair naturally (i.e. no relaxers) it takes on a soft, curly, kinky texture. The appearance and style changes depending on her hair care regimen. This is what I mean by natural hair.

So this ‘natural’ hairstyle is achieved by exposing it to artificially created chemicals, ok.

Also I’d like to point out there is a difference between “Natural hair” and “Natural hairstyle” as you seem to use them as if they mean the same thing.
Natural hair simply means the hair is real hair.
Natural hairstyle implies the hairstyle hasn’t been significantly altered (artificially) by accessoires, knots and chemicals. Or at the very least creates the illusion it wasn’t altered.

Did you at all read what I wrote, dude?! I literally said natural hair is achieved when NO artificial chemicals are used to care for the hair. When I use the term “natural hairstyle” I am referring to hairstyles that women who wear their hair naturally can achieve.

No game with multiple classes are ever balanced.

That’s like saying, " let’s wait until Elephants become green colored and can fly before adding them to our zoo"
Well you will be waiting forever because it’s not happening.

Developers can’t make the game balanced because they would have to get rid of the classes uniqueness which would destroy the game’s replay value.

Adding new classes is better. Developers can be dynamic with balance and adjust as time goes on, rather than seeking 100% balance which is impossible..

Um, since when can a zoo not handle elephants? Your analogy only makes sense if the zoo already has trouble housing and feeding the animals it has and chooses to get more; a choice that is very stupid indeed.

There’s also a big difference between accepting that perfect balance is unattainable and throwing your hands in the air and just not bothering at all.

Being one of the many who watched Anet shoot their own feet off in GW1, I’d reeeeeaaaaaallllllyyyy rather not watch it happen all over again.

And finally, a game can be relatively balanced and still have plenty of class diversity. It’s called having roles. Anet is so hung up on “no class roles” that the classes we have constantly step on each others’ toes. It’s compounded by the fact that only 5/8 classes can ever be in a group.

If ANet does add serious racism towards a specific group of players, I’ll probably quit.

It works in TES because that’s a single-player game. There are already people bragging about trolling Sylvari in-game, it’s going to get much, much worse if ANet puts canon support behind racism. There would have to be much better control of in-game trolling and unwelcome RP. I don’t think ANet has the CS team to really manage that.

Hopefully the story points out that what happened is Sylvari lost their uniqueness and are now like every other race, instead of going ‘Bad Sylvari OH NOES’. Every race has their dragon followers or evil faction. There’s no reason to single out Sylvari.

It’s not racism if it’s towards the sylvari.

Salad is meant to be eaten, not reasoned with.

Pretty sure there’s a also a big difference between being cultists and literally being designed as soldiers for a dragon. A dragon, by the way, that seems to have little trouble reasserting dominance over it’s creations when they come in close proximity or open their minds sufficiently.

It’s now cannon that Sylvari are dragon minions. If someone RP’s that they don’t trust you because you are, in fact, a dragon minion, that’s just how it is.

Entangle Vs. Stealth

Could add a short pulsing reveal to it so as long as a thief or mesmer is in entangle they have to break out of it the same way as everyone else.

No need to reveal, the vines already have an animation if they have someone caught in it.

I think the idea is to prevent a thief from simply CnD the vines and casually strolling out of it.

Usually when ANET does something like this they are planning better gathering tools but want players to spend their gems so they can purchase more gems.

Quoted for truth. I will put money on this, come PAX South / LS they will reveal an entire new line of harvesting tools that give something similar to the watchwork tools, and everyone will rush to buy them because they give x items upon gathering.

I remember when the watchwork tools were released, I heard plenty of players who already had three of the infinite harvesting tools rush to buy the watchwork ones at the expense of 3,000 more gems just because they gave sprockets and they were used to create the new ascended back piece.

Uh, pretty sure the unholy firestorm of Erage (much deserved) told them that would never fly again. Also, there’s only 1 watchwork tool. Not “tools”. If people purchased 3 picks, that was their choice.

Entangle Vs. Stealth

Same SHOULD apply to Entangle. It’s a plant so it could care less what it is grabbing, but visible or not, you are getting grabbed.

Because the vines are independent mobs that need to be able to target a player/mob to affect them. Anet could probably change this but as of right now the vines aren’t simply an effect like static field or other AoE’s that cover and area and hit everything in them regardless of visibility.

The obvious solution would be to change it to an AoE that just causes long duration Immob and bleed to 5 targets closest to you. This might end up causing a nerf though since you would no longer be able to kill the vines to escape.

if you can start the channel while they are outside of cover the hunters call channel will continue to hit and los wont break it as its not a projectile attack.

When was this changed? I’ve never seen it work when LoS is lost. If they go behind a solid object or through a wall portal in WvW the skill will keep firing off but will just throw up “Obstructed” errors until the channel ends.

Warhorn cd reduction was needed, but the functionality is still meh.

Compare our warhorn 4:

Call hawks to swarm your foe. 25 sec cd. Channeled (meaning vulnerable to interrupts, can be dodged)

To warriors warhorn 4.

Grant swiftness to yourself and allies, while curing chilled, crippled, and immobilized.

15 sec cd. (12 traited) Max targets 10. Also Converts 1 condition to a boon (traited)

I don’t think you can interrupt the skill once it’s been activated on a target by stunning etc the Ranger. You do however need to maintain a constant line of sight with the hawks and be facing the target. I’m not sure of the arc but doing a complete 180 shuts them off.

But, ya, the warrior horn is amazing. The Ranger horn is pretty decent assuming you have no warriors or guardians in your group which is almost never the case in PvE or large fight WvW/GvG.

@lordkrall it’s a situation they created with their own hands. The communication is abysmal and that’s the best possible compliment i could ever give it. Undeserved or not, if it proves false, they fully “deserve the undeserved” flame that will come.

If this is not an expansion, they should have defused this situation immediately.

What part of “hype train has no brakes” was unclear?

Probably too much effort to program a system to handle resetting the personal story. Anet’s not one to shy away from a method to wring more sweet, sweet gem money out of us and this idea gets shot down almost every time one brings it up.

The biggest con is that we have pro/con threads. The Ranger has to be the class with the most misinformed players, and if you want facts, look no further than the ‘bearbow’ stereotype.

Also, 25% movement speed isn’t mobility. GS IMO is a subpar weapon, so the only mobility we have is sword. I hesitate to call that mobility as I have never seen anyone actually doing the trick, as it requires two precise about faces (or macros). Run any other weapon and your mobility is lightning reflexes…which isn’t meant for mobility.

But honestly, it saddens me a bit to see the beginner stereotype attached to Rangers. Maybe for PvE…but really, is it possible to be bad at PvE? Go to WvW, and you become the target, 100% of the time. Even if you are 1v1, have fun stalemating shatter mesmers or slip up once and get facerolled by a hambow. That’s the Ranger.

The Case for a PvE Hard Mode

I would be fine with them adding a “hard mode,” but ONLY if there is no additional rewards attached to it. There can be zero-point achievements, and there can be titles attached to hard mode completions, but there should not be any bonus MF, any unique drops, any reward unlocks, or unique reward tracks. You should receive no better or additional loot for playing content on hard mode than you would on default.

If you wouldn’t want hard mode without having bonus candy for playing it, then there should not be a hard mode, full stop.

Its post like this that makes me wonder how spoiled this community is. People expect to be rewarded equally showing up to a world boss or champ train spamming 1 as doing something extremely difficult and/or require skills to execute. The so called “casual” and i use this term loosely because real casual players are not this pathetic to make excuses to justify how they don’t want to improve as a playe, already get so much reward for doing barely anything. You can even get legendaries by just the swipe of a credit card.

The hardcore players who constantly strive for harder content gets barely anything to show for compared to the people who spams 1 while alt tabbing and watching porn in farm trains. Its time anet properly balance risk/reward in this game for once.

The consequences of playing a game where glass cannon is BiS for everything and mindless farm grind is the key to most any luxury item.

Just on a hunch I tried completing the download again. Magically, no connection issue, and I’m certain ISP’s did nothing within about hour of Anet posting.

Wonder how many borked updates it will take to get it straight.

Probably 1-2 tops but those will likely just end up breaking something else.

It won’t happen. They have sad time and again that they aren’t gonna do expansions and if they suddenly released one out of no where it would shatter what little credibility they have left in the eyes of the community.

There would be almost 0 reason to believe them on anything, one way or the other.

Server Merges in China

…this game will end up with only a small loyal community as player base. You dont believe me, wait 12 month & prove me wrong!

Thing is all they have to do is say “Ya, well, my guild is still here and (because of the mega server system) I never see empty zones. This game is doing just fine!” and hand wave away criticism.

Megaserver was a genius move to be honest. They side stepped the sticky issue of consolidating servers and made it almost impossible to notice the true population density of the game (in either direction).

WvW could still be potentially used as a test but Anet has ignored it for so long and pvpers make up such a small portion of MMO’ers I doubt it’s very indicative of true population levels.
