So… you’re telling me rifle will somehow be magically fixed with the next expansion? Despite the fact that it’s been woefully underpowered for years now and many people have (rightfully) pointed this out? It doesn’t take a genius to recognize that an expac won’t necessarily fix old content.

  • Holosmith is leaked information. We don’t even know if that’s the final specialization, and there’s no point on speculating about it because they’ve been so tight-lipped.
  • Do you actually expect holosmith work to fix rifle issues? Or our core trait issues? Last I checked, elite specializations have their own weapon and trait lines unaffiliated with core trait lines.
  • You’re also implying that power creep is a good thing with this comment. I don’t know if that was your intention.

no, it isnt ad hominem, its literally what happens. the last time a dev was around here, he asked for feedback, got more than im sure he needed because random people crawl out of the woodwork when a red post appears, couldnt really act on it because his managers told him “just do a feedback thread kitten” or something without allowing him enough time or resources for 1 class let alone the 3 he had to work on, and for the next year this forum and his thread became “whered he go” “why didnt this ever come to fruition” “engi needs more work”. the thing about anet is that they seem to have so much that they want to do that they dont have resources to also constantly overhaul small parts of the game over and over and over to satisfy endless complaints. there may not be a dev employed by them who actually has a grip on the intricacies of balancing all (or even 2) classes in a profoundly inspirational way. so they do look for feedback, but it really actually does get drowned out in kitten like “put 1 sec of burning on flamethrower 1”, “double the damage on blunderbuss”, “make turrets great again /cry”, “gyros without daze are trash give it back”, etc etc. being angry about it and toeing the line of flaming doesnt make people (devs are people too) want to read your stuff, and quite frankly you are that here, and you are that in other threads where you get all up in arms about engi being forgotten. thats not ad hominem.

i aint sayin kitten about rifle being fixed or not, itll probably remain the same as it ever was – adequate for core/pve, useless for pvp because everything else is better. and thats not because anet hates it, its because they can choose to either spend time on rifle or spend time on holosmith. tough choice i know, but someone is forcing it, be it the managers, the investors, the players, or the devs.

turrets on the other hand. turrets literally could not function without the toolbelt. now they can. why would anet bother to change such entrenched functionality if they planned to leave engi with the toolbelt forever. and there is an expansion coming soon.

those 4 sentences are all you need to say to yourself to draw a conclusion that holosmith might ditch the toolbelt. these 4 sentences are facts that have come out of anet themselves.

as we have seen, they do not bother changing things that are “viable” (but maybe not “good”) when they dont literally have to change it to keep it functioning for future plans. see rifle, explosives, grenades, elixirs H R C and toss U, and anything else that is outdated by elite specs (especially in settings where the things were once meta, such as grenades and 3-4 kit engi in pvp) or anything else across the entire game that functions passably but gets complained about for not being good enough.

secondly, there literally is an expansion coming on the next release cycle after living world episode 6. it may happen on a bit more extended timeline than the normal release cadence. but it is happening.

you dont need leaked info here. knowing the likely name of the spec and its likely weapon and trait icons based on screenshots from an nda’d client is interesting but tangential.

as for the power creep comment, no i do not support power creep. if you feel the need to flip through my extensive post history, youll find that since HoT i have bemoaned the new reality that practically excludes non-elite specs and i did not complain about the multiple rounds of hard nerfs that scrapper has received, contrary to the threads those posts are in. and for now, i recommend waiting for the expac (or preview) to see where holosmith will stand, because current balancing is quite obviously being done with that in mind and will undoubtedly still leave core specs in the dust despite our sorrow and anger. things change. adapt. its the nature of games like this.

with my sentence about the 9 peoples commenting,I meant to say “only 9 peoples commented”,so may be open a thread on reddit will work better,for visibility and for ammount of reply.

In any case,i feel is depressing to see our only power weapon for core engineer be in that state , after 2 years,untouched .

I mean,they touched the core weapon of every single class,every single class,to make some adjustment.
And of course….we are invisible untill we make a post of 1000 peoples commenting,or some youtuber with big visibily speaks of it,or someone is able to open a thread on reddit and gain enough reply.

This is painfully stupid,the balance should be spontaneus,especially in that case.

Also because , from what i see , there is no more “big” youtubers playing engi , no offense to any streamer , but i’m old school 4 years old (well since right after the beta) engineer main , and i lost track of all the major streamer that used to play this class,especially after HoT .

Part of the problem is their forum mentality. Since they never post in the class subforums (or even seem to bother to read them), these threads never get viewed. If you try to post in the forums they do actually read about engineer woes, your thread gets moved here to the graveyard. It’s almost like a trolling joke of theirs.

Post on reddit, and you might have a chance to get seen, but even that’s relatively slim. You’ll barely get traction, and most people will use the same tired complaints about engineer — that we’re already top DPS tier, why are we complaining? Or that scrapper is “OP” or some other complaint from people that don’t play engineer to any great extent.

The class is suffering greatly, but most other players can’t see the forest for the trees.

Also, I’d point out WoodenPotatoes video about how screwed up engineer traits are for the power bomber. You know what ArenaNet took from that whole video? That flipover skills should be detonate, instead of the toolbar skill. That’s all they did, and that wasn’t even a major complaint of his either — he pointed out how negligible the DPS of the turret was in the first place.

if they instead leave us to our own devices and we manage to produce skills and balance theses that arent merely 50 post echo chamber threads about how rifle sucks, they do actually read that stuff and probably take inspiration from it. I can personally attest to them doing so.

the problem is, most of the balance and suggestion threads here and in other profession subs are trash in some form or other, often to the point that you really shouldn’t want a dev wasting time on them.

weird, i recommend doing what you need to to survive… but i also pug 100 cm and i rarely find my groups solo/duo at mama and i never swap parasitic contagion in. nor does the friend i generally drag along. we would need a little more practice to fully duo mama in 1 shot, but 4-5 man is entirely np as is keeping the rest of the team up.

I think it might be the time of day I’m active, really. I do my Fractals on NA during Oceanic prime time, so it’s possible I’m just not seeing all of the better pubs that you or others run across in NA prime.

hmm my usual time that I search for parties is from noon to 3 am na central approximately at random but slightly disfavoring around reset

Having done fractals at both those times on NA i can tell you the OCE slot is a bad time to PUG by comparison. Might be because of players from OCE/SEA and latency but it’s pretty much a night and day situation.

And this is sad , would be nice have the community of this class partecipate to bring this topic to the eyes of someone in the Anet.

pretty sure the community at large is disappointed in rifles current state, but we said this 2 years ago, 1.5 years ago, 1 year ago, 6 months ago, 3 months ago, and nothings changed.

It’s not like 100 CM has high pressure anywhere.

You’re not wrong, but 9 out of 10 pub players don’t CC quickly enough, inflict social awkwardness on their whole team, don’t manage enemy boons, don’t share proper team buffs, and don’t properly manage boss mechanics (ie. poison fields at Siax). When you’re dealing with that, it suddenly becomes incredibly high pressure all the time, and little DPS losses to boost your survivability go a long way. I’ve only been in a few pub groups myself where I haven’t had to solo/duo the last 20% of MAMA’s HP or solo/duo the entire second orb phase on Ensolyss.

in fact, its gotten to the point where i dont judge groups by mama any more, but by siax’s echoes. nothing is really demanding enough until that phase. if the group can pass that in 1 shot, we generally wont have the issue at ensolyss’s phasing, which is definitely a thing but also has a strong rng component in blue orb timing.

the thing is, it’s not really lower budget any more. rabid is the good low budget alternative at an exotic level since you can acquire it without crafting. but once you say “I need ar” and you mean ascended, nothing is cheap or cheaper because mystic forge stat conversion makes all the prices about the same.

you may need to gather a couple friends or guildies who know to bring extra strong ccs such as electric wyvern (ranger), flesh golem (necro), and basilisk venom (thief).

in addition, dont call it in map chat so you dont bring in a bunch of clueless scrubs. dont bring a tag and use a leaderless squad if necessary to help prevent troll tags (but invite everyone who appears and ask them in squad chat not to tag up). this event scales, so distilling your group down to fewer people who are doing it right will have a strong impact on the break bar.

if you cant fulfill these suggestions, make another character so that you can. you may need to be open and proactive to achieve.

"Leaked" Engie Spec

The Scrapper traitline is all but mandatory for pvp/wvw – even for non-hammer builds. If you don’t take it, you’re at a huge disadvantage losing access to function gyro. It is by far the worst elite spec mechanic – useless in pve, but good at what it does in competitive game modes.

It also comes with some decent defensive traits and gives you access to sneak + purge gyros.

Coro, you’re crazy man. Gyros are by and far among the most powerful utility skills introduced in Heart of Thorns. They give stability to function as safe stomps and resses, they function as minor healing skills through Final Salvo, and they offer tons of condition cleanse, damage reduction, and projectile hate. The only thing that makes them “useless” in PvE is the fact that they do no damage — and that scrapper by extension doesn’t improve the engineer’s damage.

Those things you mentioned are great for PvP and WvW. They’re what make Scrapper so powerful for PvP.

And almost completely worthless for PvE. Stability is rarely needed. You never stomp (toxic alliance excluded). Most rezzes are done by the whole group. Condi cleanse is rarely necessary (most enemies deal at most two conditions). Damage reduction generally is not that helpful (and protection is more abundant). Projectile hate can be done better by other classes or core engineer (not that projectiles are a big problem in PvE in the first place). Hammer can deal okay damage when mixed in with kits, but it’s not a big step up.

Add these things together — gyros are not useful (compared to kits) in PvE, and hammer is not great. Therefore, the entire spec is not useful in PvE. Take a look at most of the PvE builds people are building for engineer — they almost exclusively use core specs.

the only reason they use tools(/inventions) instead of scrapper is because the equivalent selfish dps increases offered by scrapper are covered by ps warrior and chrono while tools and inventions offer things that allow an engi to absorb more buffs from others, thereby increasing dps more in a situation where someone else is buffing.

thats why scrapper sees more use in open world than raids or fractals.

if your chrono sucks or you dont have one, please take scrapper. its just better than core. you get a bunch of extra defensive things for “free”.

normally i go with inventions cuz armor swapping is either more of a bother than actively keeping swiftness or so much more expensive that i would rather just make another character (ive done both, making another toon is less hassle in the long run).

ps warrior existed prior to HoT, when core specs were all there was. i realize its not an elite spec and thats why im throwing it out as an example of the design concept of making an entire trait line useless in 2/3 game modes, not as an example of an elite spec.

and im saying theyre going too slow with elite specs too. 2 years is too long to wait for a system that needs as much variety as theyve planned for it to have.

Again, core trait is different to elite spec trait. IMO they can’t be compared. Core trait line doesn’t unlock weapon or other skills. Core trait line doesn’t change elite spec mechanics (Besides Scrapper for pve ha ha…)

I however agree, we could use more elite specs but with the current situation, they could be at least more impactful and useful for all modes. And they are besides Scrapper (again). Reaper shroud, zerker state, new virtues, etc all are useful in all modes. Besides the Function Gyro. And if we’re getting new elite spec only each 2 years then they better be useful in all modes.

It’s been 5 years and engi is still stuck with kits and p/p, nothing really changed. I don’t know about you, I want change. And as a mostly pve player, it’s the most noticeable for engi IMO.

again, you arent getting what im saying. ill try again: im not comparing core spec vs elite spec. im saying that regardless of whether a certain trait line is core or elite, it will be useful in some circumstances and useless in others. and it should be like that.

since you seem to only want to discuss elite specs and dont accept a core spec as an example of a thing being useless under a condition, heres another one – druid. its pretty much the same condition as ps warrior, but the difference is you wont use the elite spec under the condition instead of a core spec – when you already have a druid in a group, you dont want another one and the 2nd ranger player is asked to respec to condi ranger because its a dps boost.

it happens all over. its just usually not with elite specs because theyre so op. and of course its always better if there is some use than no use, like using 1 ps warrior or 1 druid at a time. and i would say that that in fact should be a design goal, even though it means only 1-2 players get to fill that role in any given group its still creating a role to fill that makes people feel useful.

and i will say it for the 3rd time in this argument(?) that i feel like anet has moved too slow on elite specs and balance and has left us hanging. “i dont know about you” isnt something you need to be saying here, i very clearly agree. i dont really know why youre so combative.

I think he’s talking about the base weapons which pistol and rifle did pretty poorly… but that’s all the more reason why I think the idea of a kitless build is unrealistic. We were built with at least using one in mind hence no weapon swap and overall weaker base weaponry.

yeah I guess I don’t think it’s a good idea to exclude “kits” from “weapons”, it’s just not engi and hasn’t really ever been.

but i do wanna say that pistol piercing used to wreck big, tight groups and that may be why anet still seems afraid to buff the auto.

What would making kits into the profession mechanic accomplish? They are now additional weaponsets you don’t have to craft?

The problem with kits is how much overlap there is. Take the meta condi build for example, they use 4 kits, not because “kit too stronk”, but because all 4 have condi abilities.

Each kit should have a clear purpose, and as a result, you will have less reasons to slot all of them.

They say it’s hard to balance kits because it’s 5 skills vs 1. Luckily for engi, the regular skills come with a toolbelt, so they are 2 skills in one. Sure, kits have toolbelt skills, too, but balance them to be only complimentary to the kit’s use, while regular skills should have toolbelt skills as strong as the slot skill itself.

Kits take up slot skills, which should be used for actual slot skills. Also, there isn’t a fixed number of kits you can have simultaneously, so they’re harder to balance.

Yes, there is, it’s 5. And for every kit you take, you sacrifice 1 heal/utility/elite slot. Which is why pvp uses less kits.

3-4 kits used to be pvp standard. then elite specs came out and… hammer fills enough time + can stomp and cleave/cc (not or) + a bunch of ccs the opponent won’t reasonably dodge on a bunch of low cd skills that have instant casts = you don’t need more kits. if core engi did multiple things at once like scrapper can, more kits would still be meta. scrappers aren’t sacrificing kits. theyre taking gyros.

i dont think thats a mistake. the mistake is in not being able to push out another elite spec for 2-3 years.

It’s not mistake that the elite spec is useless for one mode? You’ve got to be kidding me… And it’s not like they’re unable to push out another elite spec between the expansions. It’s the design choice to make it an expansion selling feature.

you had to press 3 buttons before patch already, but now it is the same button. I honestly don’t see the problem

As a WvW player where you often have to spam your heal skill and pray it triggers it could be an issue, especially if you could detonate before the overcharge went off. On the other hand for Rifle Turret being able to quickly detonate on demand is meaningful (CC mainly) but if I had to wait for the overcharge to go off could be an issue. I think as long as the detonate didn’t cancel the overcharge I could deal though, just have to proactively use the overcharge so you can detonate on time.

tbh anet ought to just tune it again so theres no gap. theyve already acknowledged it was a mistake to not have a short cd for the people that spam by even doing the hotfix, they just didnt quite fix the issue.

inb4 3 months. or 6. or 9. x_x

the trait icons will be either punny or descriptive, so its hard to tell which is which. the first minor (fidget spinner) — if anet follows the ordering to some extent of HoT specs — will be related to how holosmith changes the core mechanics of engi, in this case its likely to replace the toolbelt imo thanks to those turret changes.

the 3 following major traits wont have much of a discernable order in terms of how good they are, except that if many people are speculating correctly and we get 1 of each level of trait early then it allows us to fully flesh out the spec very quickly and start fully being a holosmith early in the experience. that would be a welcome change from HoT, where one walks around as a core spec likely until 10 icons in, minimum, when you receive your first master level trait. even at that point, your old build is prolly still better.

another thing that really interests me is the 3 circuit backdrop traits. the circuit backdrop is mirrored and rotated, so these traits are all related in some way, and theyre placed in a way (whether we get traits in the order adept-master-grand 3-3-3 or 1-1-1 then 2-2-2) that we can take all 3 of these traits at the same time. (either as holo 222 or 312, which is a tentative point toward the HoT acquisition order cuz holo 222 is prettier for related traits). they may grease/improve whatever probably-toolbelt-changing mechanic we get, possibly by adding blocking, buffing, and moving/quickness in some fashion. its probably intended that taking all 3 will greatly enhance the mechanic… but knowing anet…

as for the rest, i can only wildly speculate at trait names. “blow off steam”, “focused light”, “diffusion” [sic… diffraction], “transmitter”, all come to mind and i hesitate to even ponder the other ones. and mechanics? ill just wait for the official reveals.

you dont have to have evades/blocks in pve and i doubt holosmith will be focused towards pvp/wvw the way scrapper is.

shield might be required for class mechanics anyways (whos to say), but it being pure defense means s/p might be the “better” choice in pve since damage is damage and shield has none. but sure, that [pistol] sure would be silly.

Gyros require scrapper, so why wasting a utility slot for something the healing turret already do? And you forget, gyros movement is bugged as hell, and they are thin as paper against the not so uncommen aoe’s in pve.
Both the purge gyro’s and the healing turrets toolbelt suck imo.

from this statement i dont think you have tried purge gyro in the situation where its good. please try it if you can tolerate pvp.

i thought it was a given but i looked at the pvp ui and couldnt find it when prior to this theyve always had something on there telling us when the next season starts. either on the ranked button or in the leagues tab somewhere.

no, purge has been really good since … well, since they took out soldier amulet and durability runes and since then engi has needed to dedicate other things to dealing with condis. it hasnt fallen out of favor as far as im aware, except situationally when you arent fighting condi builds like at all in a game, and then its spot goes to blast gyro or maybe slick shoes (that nerf tho).

whats wrong with skipping mechanics by doing not really intended but totally legal and unexploitative interactions that let you survive.

in other trinity mmos, people expect the healer to heal through mechanics when all the mechanics do is move you around if you dont want to take damage. people expect tanks/support to provoke bosses into canceling their current attack animation to skip certain attacks. how is that different than just blitzing dps so fast that you dont run out of blocks/heals. what makes it cheese. why is it wrong to do so. why do you have that mentality. it doesnt sound very mmo to me.

you know, i have been thinking. theres a front-page-of-the-reddit thread right now speculating that this patch is directly paving the way for the next xpac. and elite specs are advertised as huuuuugely changing class mechanics, and one of the complaints about scrapper is that it actually doesnt do anything to the toolbelt. why? well, turrets had to be usable, and with no/different toolbelt, there was no detonating turrets. now there is, and all utilities will be entirely usable in the absence of the toolbelt (or rather, perhaps, in the presence of shatters/virtues/attunements/etc instead of a toolbelt). so while turrets are moved from one unacceptable state to another equally unacceptable state, this new state allows holosmith to be something scrapper couldnt be at the time and was complained about not being.

There is one little problem and it’s called medkit. Its toolbelt skill is the healing skill for the player. The most important skill from that set. They’d make it even more obsolete if they removed the toolbelt. I still hope that they will change the mechanics drastically so whatever (and noone uses medkit anyway)

drop healing turret late in the might stack. the fire field will be older and you’ll still blast might, and if you don’t suck at spamming you might even be able to kill your turret before it drops the field.

I don’t see how this is an issue. you know game mechanics right coro. you know blasts go by field age right.

Facts matter little to people that don’t like change. Be careful before presenting facts gets you labeled a troll.

I would urge people to think about the changes before crying wolf. I mean, the bottom line here is that this is simply a matter of relearning timing and playing smarter. I know that won’t appeal to people that just want to faceroll to victory but in all honestly, there is no argument that makes sense for supporting facerolling to victory. Claiming this is ruins healing turrets in WvW because of field overlay is a proclamation of being unwilling to think about what you do when playing.

Maybe would need to flip back from detonate to overcharge when overcharge comes off cd too. I only skimmed that thread earlier but I’m not certain he covered multiple overcharges in a single lifetime.
