I’m not sure if it’d count if you didn’t do anything, but I’d like to point out that I was idling in Frostgorge once (after getting 13/13) and the event triggered there. I only really participated in a single minion portal event, and I still got the full reward at the end. Not sure about achievements, though, since I already had everything.

Edit: As for the rotations, it’d have been much smarter to have them follow an order. It’s 13 maps, the day has 24 hours, it’d take 26 hours to rotate through every map twice, so each map would trigger 2 hours later each day. You’d still get each map at the same hour each day at least once. Say the invasions started at 3 pm on patch day – if you log in every day at 3 pm, you’d get a rotation like #1 in the list, then #3 the next day, then #5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and finally 12. That’s all 13 maps in 13 days, guaranteed, with the massive advantage of knowing which map would appear at which hour, so you could plan ahead for days when you can’t be online, for instance. Or if you missed a zone or the achievement count didn’t go up, you’d know exactly when you’d be able to try again.

Working together to achieve goals...

Honestly, the problem is that completing minion events advances completion by only a tiny amount when compared to AB and molten. If minions advanced completion faster, the events would not fail 90% of the time (since most of the time farmers do, indeed, end up killing all of the AB on the map). Every time I’ve seen it fail, AB were all dead with 8+ minutes to spare on the clock. Sure, the AB wave generally takes 20 or so minutes because people focus on them rather than the minions, but it’s really disheartening to run to a minion event with a group of 3-4 people, finish it, and watch the progress bar tick by what, 2%? Especially compared to molten drilling machines which can be soloed without even taking any significant damage.

Edit: Also it’s worth noting that the AB waves are much, much more difficult than the other waves, and not just because of the zerg upscaling – all the mobs are vets by default, which only happens with AB, and with stunlocks and the high damage output of Strikers, small groups are mowed down in seconds by pirates (so the only real way to kill them is, you guessed it, zerging).

Farmers and Moral Superiority

No. But of course I expected reductio ad absurdum to be used as a “counter argument” as quickly as ad hominem.

Look around you. A lot of people unfortunatelly have no choice but to do something they don’t enjoy for a living. The guy who’s manning that gas station accross the street probably didn’t dream about doing that when he was a kid. Those Chinese factory workers very unfortunatelly do not have a choice – whatever abilities they have are wasted in a job that requires no skill.

Do you know what’s even worse?

When people choose to live like that. When, in a mockery of all those unfortunate people who due to circunstance cannot work on something that would make them happy, others decide to waste their time doing an activity they don’t even enjoy. Even worse, to live like that when playing a game.

That’s what a farmer is.

Yes, a farmer in a game is someone who chooses to do a repetitive, mindless activity. Some of them don’t even enjoy it. They do it because the rewards in doing so are significant.

Which is nothing like a Chinese factory worker, who does a repetitive, mindless activity they don’t enjoy, yes, but neither has an actual choice, nor gets a significant reward for it.

Yet you compared the two. You said the job of Chinese factory workers is very easy. In saying other careers are comparative to skilled players, you implied that both farmers and Chinese factory workers do not, in fact, have skill. You posed the question of who has a better salary, while completely ignoring the different contexts in which factory workers and people like Steve Jobs get paid (cute, given that the Apple factory in China has been called out for its horrific work conditions). And then you made the statement that “farmers want the Chinese workers to have a better salary”. Your post originally followed with “in the end, they don’t deserve it” (it did not say “the farmers don’t deserve it”).

You’re the one who needs to look around you, mate.

Reductio ad absurdum is easy when your comparison is, in fact, absurd. Not really bothering with your other points, though.

I was going to comment on your points about farming, but—

Seriously? You’re comparing people with a lot of free time who spend it grinding for stuff in an MMO to exploited, underpaid workers? You’re implying those workers are actually completely devoid of skill rather than they do it because they, you know, have no better option? You’re actually saying those workers are underpaid because they lack skill rather than because the system blatantly exploits them? And they don’t deserve better salaries?

Seriously?

I’m sorry, I don’t see how someone who is actually saying people in real life who have to endure subpar working conditions don’t deserve better pay has any moral ground to talk about people farming in a game.

Hey folks,

We’re still looking into this.

As I mentioned before, there are a few things that MIGHT be affecting your ability to complete these achievements:

  • Killing Molten Alliance or pirates does not count towards event credit.
  • Killing spawns from the Clockwork part piles does not count towards event credit.

The best bet for getting event completion is going to be taking down the Clockwork champions. They are directly tied to event completion.

Please keep providing details when you fail to receive completion.

Thank you!

I don’t think that’s the problem, really. The second time I did FS I pretty much stuck to farming pirates, and I still got the achievements. The first time I did more minions than molten/aetherblades, and got nothing.

Don't these events feel rather mindless?

So, more Deadeye. Yep, we saw how well that went…

Also, your capslock key seems to be stuck. You should probably try to get that fixed.

Nah, Deadeye didn’t reward you based on risk, because with the correct strategy there was no risk whatsoever. Hell, he was lucky to land one hit on my Guardian. Nothing risky about that. Granted, they probably never intended for him to be so easily killable, but… still.

I figure if there is a way for you to get whatever the new additions are, then you can’t really complain. And in this case, you do have access to 18 slot boxes, profane armor and experience boosters, if you really want them (just like with a real life limited edition, you could always buy the new limited edition if you wanted the new items).

It’s only when they add items that previous special edition owners can’t get at all that it becomes a problem (like the wizard hat once upon a time). Not really the case here.

Any warriors who did this solo? any advice on utilities or such?

I did it on my warrior.

I ran GS/rifle (mostly used GS, really), 30/30/0/10/0, healing signet/FGJ/Shake It Off/Berserker Stance/Signet of Rage. No real trick to it, berserker stance is useful vs twisted horrors and aetherblade thugs/strikers to avoid getting knocked down and stunned. Kill twisted horrors ASAP to avoid having them merge into vets (two vets can merge into nightmare, you don’t want that). Avoid mobs when moving from area to area. For Scarlet you can swap Berserker Stance with Frenzy to get quickening when she’s stunned or busy charging up her attack, and hack away with your greatsword. Last part takes a bit of dodging to avoid getting downed, but that’s pretty much it.

This particular farm doesn’t actually create gold at a rate as substantial as the gauntlet farming did – farming the gauntlet made straight silver, not equipment/mats, and up to 30s in a minute. Here what you have is a smaller amount of money made and a much more significant amount of items made. Sure, you can sell those on the TP for gold, but that gold comes from other players, not thin air like the gold made from the gauntlet farm did. So instead of cause inflation and nothing else, it increases the supply of certain items, which actually reduces their prices.

Can you please let me know if you were on your home server or the overflow when the issue occurred?

In addition, were you able to unlock the map if you did it more than once? Example: If it failed to count the first time but you got credit for the second attempt.

Thanks!

There actually is an achievement for it! Tonight’s daily includes doing some number of those finishers, which I realized when I got credit for it during an invasion. I’m not sure if it’s 25 or 50, I’m not in game this moment.

I’ve never seen my Rabbit finisher (I don’t really WvW and I’ve never sPvP’d) and I’d love to see what it does.

I didn’t do any finishers and I got the daily, it’s just for killing the mobs.

This mechanic is actually pretty annoying to me – gets in the way of looting very often and I find myself canceling out of the finisher animation more often than not. :x

Zone not counting towards achievement

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: neon.4863

neon.4863

My question for those that did not receive credit for a particular run is when did they enter the zone (invasion progress) and how much did they contribute. I’m starting to think that you can’t just afk and get credit. I’m not accusing people of doing this. There just could be a participation threshold you must reach to receive credit for the achievement.

I entered the event when it started on the main server, went through the whole thing, and didn’t get credit (this was in Frostgorge Sound). A party member did get credit. The only thing of note was that I disconnected about 5 minutes in, but managed to get back into the main server.

I waypoint around in every invasion and that’s never hindered progress. The only time I did not receive credit, I had disconnected mid-fight. Otherwise everything was the same as the other times.

You can do almost any content in this game and get rewards without having to do much, or anything at all.

You can win PvP matches by joining them late and mooching off the winning team, or joining them early and just running around not actually doing anything.

You can do WvW events by following a zerg and not ever doing anything except occasionally pushing a button (difficulty level: same as using a portal).

You can stop by a DE, kill a couple mobs and leave, and still get a medal from across the map when some other person finishes it. Heck, you sometimes get credit for a DE without ever participating in it, just because you were nearby.

You can join a dungeon party and not do anything and still get completion rewards.

In the recent LS update, you can make it to a map where the invasion is ongoing, finish maybe one event, then park your character in a corner somewhere and wait for it to be over to get the rewards.

All of these things will also give achievements, or improve achievement counts, with no effort on the player’s part – as long as someone else has completed the content.

Taking a portal to the end of a JP is no different. Ultimately, whether or not the leecher got the reward does not affect the rewards that everyone else got. And unlike the rest of the content – where people leeching is detrimental to the people actually doing it, because it’ll scale the difficulty/put them at a disadvantage – leeching in JPs is completely harmless. People open portals to the end of the JP because they want to. People leech with the permission of the player they’re leeching from. And that’s perfectly fine in an MMO.

Now that the rewards don’t scale with gambits anymore outside of a few sprockets and only a very small chance at anything else, using gambits is no longer rewarding or advantageous in any way once you have all the achievements. Map Reward Clarification?

Hi, I can’t log in until later today so I couldn’t check this for myself yet, but I’m confused by something in the release notes:

“For example, players who claim the map-wide reward for an invasion in the Gendarran Fields will only be able to claim invasion rewards in other maps until the following day.”

Was this sentence mistyped? As it is it implies that if we get the Gendarran Fields map-wide reward today we only have until tomorrow to get invasion rewards in other maps. I’m assuming this is incorrect.

Since it says it’s “per account, per day, per map” what does it actually mean? Can we get one reward on each map every day (which is what ‘per map’ implies), or just one map’s reward every day? That is, can I get a reward on Gendarran Fields and one on Harathi Hinterlands today, or can I only get Gendarran Fields today?

Thanks in advance.

Other than what has been mentioned (warhorn daze, scepter #2 cripple, golem kd, staff chill and fear) there’s also your DS fear, and warhorn #5 which not only speed buffs you, but also cripples Chomper if you’re running next to it, so you should be able to use that skill to outrun it. That’s 7 options to slow it down, and if you beat it to the meat each time and still haven’t managed to kill it, one of them is bound to be out of cooldown by then.

Since the patch it seems like there’s a new bug in the arena – sometimes you get kicked out immediately after going in the arena, with no opponent ever spawning. This makes you lose all active gambits, but not the boss selected. Also wastes your entry ticket.

So Being 1-Shot is meant to be a Challenge?

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: neon.4863

neon.4863

One-shot mechanics are difficult and meant to be so, but they are all avoidable. Take platformers like Boshy or IWTBTG. These are some of the most difficult games ever created, partly because you can’t ever get hit. There was no dodge button. I see no problem giving bosses in gw2 one-shot mechanics.

Offline games don’t have latency. Push a button and the game reacts immediately. Something like Super Meat Boy relies entirely on your own timing and reaction. Online games, however, rely entirely on your latency. If your ping is 50ms (e.g. you’re in the US or near an EU server) you won’t ever notice, but if you’re not in the right country your latency can and will kill you in twitchy fights with one-shot mechanics that don’t give you enough time to react.

Say you have a 0.2 second reaction time. With a 50ms ping your total reaction time is 250ms, which let’s say is enough to avoid an attack that gives you a half second window between the visual cue and damage. It even gives you some leeway if you react a little bit later. With a 300ms+ ping, however, your total reaction time is 500ms+, meaning you’re probably dead.

And its not working well when half of your customer playing from other continents.

This. THIS. Thank you. I gave up on Liadri (occasionally retrying to see if I get lucky, I don’t) because it’s such a twitchy fight and so heavily reliant on precise timing that my 300-500ms ping means I am dead mid dodge, after dodge, outside of the AoE, stuck after picking up a crystal or after throwing a crystal or after being pulled and so forth, time and time again. I can handle every other fight since they have room for error and the ones with one-shot mechanics have other things to them too, but Liadri is simply impossible. Even knowing the pattern doesn’t help because my timing is so inconsistent (since the ping varies, getting the right timing relies on luck rather than precision).

Liadri would’ve been a fun fight in an offline game. In an online game where latency is an issue? One-shot mechanics should be absent or have some leniency (i.e. have a significant charging time). If she had just the clones or just the AoE it’d be a different story. But between both and the pull and her dps on top of it there’s just too much room for one laggy dodge killing you.

These are robots who for some reason have nipple-like constructs on their equally baffling breast-like constructs. If a woman breastfeeding in public is considered indecent, is it really that shocking that people will consider it sexual for a robot to have completely unnecessary boobs which also completely unnecessarily seem naked?

Robots are not people. Robots do not have bare boobs. They’re given bare boobs. Deliberately. By the person who built them. When socially it is generally considered unacceptable in the societies most of us live in for boobs to be bare.

And there is no in-game reason for this, either, since I’ve yet to see a single female human NPC walking around with their breasts bare in a way that implies this is somehow socially acceptable in Krytan society.

@Erasculio: The point is they do not even need those body parts to begin with, yet there they are, for some reason beyond anyone’s comprehension.

No, please, explain. Don’t just quote me, say it’s wrong, and then say “let’s not derail” without actually explaining what you mean.

Quickly.

The stats that most people are quoting state that 45% of gamers are female. However, the part that most people leave out are where those females are distributed amongst game types. This means that while almost half of gamers are female, many genres of games still have a relatively larger male percentage.

This is why you see some games becoming much more neutral (or even female centric), and others aren’t changing much.

I’m not commenting on whether this is right or wrong, or whether some games are “legit” or not, I’m simply saying that we have to consider all the variables when using these stats.

The stat is actually 47%. That’s the full study (for those wondering wtf we’re on). They also have reports for previous years.

You’re right in saying we can’t get a figure for the gender percentage for this particular game (or for MMOs or game types in general) from this study, since it considers all the genres.

However, I said “young males”, not all males. Specifically because lbr, if you really, honestly play games to watch an NPC’s boobs bounce, you’re probably a pubescent boy.

Basically, I’m not quoting these statistics to say 47% of GW2 players are female. I’m saying there is still a generalized belief that the average gamer is a young male, which may influence some design decisions. If I had to venture a guess – especially based on the replies here in this forum – I’d say the average GW2 gamer doesn’t seem to think big boobs are important for their enjoyment of the game. So if this was a design decision intended to please the playerbase, it seems to be a misguided one (perhaps, again, influenced by the perception that the average player is a teenaged boy).

Watchknights are a bit concerning....

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: neon.4863

And even if they didn’t specifically consider the male players, there’s such a long-standing belief that the gaming community is primarily young males (I’ve seen this debunked by actual statistics already) that they may end up unconsciously designing things based on what they believe young males would like to see.

This is a topic for another day, but this is a bit of a misrepresentation of the stats. There is more to this story than this. But….lets not derail.

No, please, explain. Don’t just quote me, say it’s wrong, and then say “let’s not derail” without actually explaining what you mean.

I just feel kind of of irritated that Anet thinks I’m so shallow as to care about a robot’s shape.

The bad news is that you’re posting about it, so you must care in some way.

The other bad news is that no one at ANet sat down and said, “Lets make something to turn the male players on.” or “Lets make something to offend female players”

So ultimately you do care, but no one at ANet set out to make you care.

I don’t care about the female figures. I care about the attitude that prompted Anet to create them. It’s like if I don’t care about apple juice, but someone keeps showing me pictures of apple juice thinking I’ll like it, I’ll obviously notice that they’re trying no?

And I’m willing to bet that someone at Anet did sit down and say “Let’s make something to turn the male players on”. What, you think those huge boobs on every female character are a coincidence?

I disagree here. I actually do believe that most of the time the intent is not “let’s come up with something to turn the male players on”. I think most of the time it is to make something attractive, aesthetically pleasing, what have you – not necessarily in a sexual way. But female forms being sexualized in some way or another is so common we, as a collective, regardless of gender, end up playing into the trope without even trying to. It’s internalized more often than not.

This is actually an interesting thing to find out. I wish we could corner a designer and ask:

“If you were developing this game for women and women were your only audience, would your character designs change in general”.

I say yes, they would. Others think it would be exactly the same. It’ll be interesting to find out which is which.

Yeah, I agree with you there, I do think the designs would change in general.

But I just also think that people in general (designers perhaps less so, since they need to be more aware of these things) usually don’t even care about these things enough to actively think about them. For instance, if you stop a random stranger on the street and ask them what kind of movie genre they would recommend, they’d probably recommend their favorite genre. If you asked them what kind of genre they would recommend to a woman specifically or to a man specifically, the answer would most likely change. The parameter changes from “things I like” to “things I think other people may like based on their gender”, and those are very different things.

And even if they didn’t specifically consider the male players, there’s such a long-standing belief that the gaming community is primarily young males (I’ve seen this debunked by actual statistics already) that they may end up unconsciously designing things based on what they believe young males would like to see.

GW2 is generally good at keeping objectification away, though, so I’m more willing to bet on this being done unconsciously rather than consciously. But alas, we will likely never know.
