I don’t know how anyone can see these things as sexualized, first time I saw them I though ‘Hey cool shapeshifting robot’. The ‘gender’ of the robot didn’t even matter to me, and I’m sure it doesn’t matter to a large majority of players.
People making comments that they want to do the horizontal monster mash with them are just playful jokes by people who DO notice the female form, but are just jokes in case anyone wants to bring that up again.

I just cannot fathom how this can be seen as a problem at all. Maybe I’m just stupid then. All I see is a robot that can turn into things and people that aren’t robots, and that should be what most people see.

I’m sorry, what? How is something that’s in a game made by people being played by people not part of the real world? A person came up with the design. People are looking at it. Being part of a game doesn’t exclude it from being part of the real world.

Your argument is in a way akin to that of people who claim they don’t notice race. You know why most people don’t notice these things? Because they don’t have to. It’s never been a problem to them, so it’s not something they need to pay attention to.

Something being a joke doesn’t exclude it from being a problem that needs to be talked about. You’re basically stating that the people who do notice the female form then proceed to “joke” about how they want to dance the horizontal tango with them – what does that say, then? That to these people, the obvious reaction to something looking female is joking about wanting to have sex with them? That’s not a problem to you?

In a perfect world, nobody would care about gender (or race, or any other thing). But the world isn’t perfect, and people do care.

This isn’t an isolated case. The ideal ‘strong female’ is depicted as hourglass shaped and scantily clad (with most of their clothes being there for aesthetics rather than functionality) a little too often. It’s in comics, it’s in cartoons, it’s in games, it’s everywhere.

Of course, when you analyze just this particular case it seems really ridiculous to point these things out. GW2 is in general good about not objectifying its female characters. But when it introduces a robot which is pretty much modeled after a hourglass-shaped naked woman in stilettos out of the blue, and when scantily clad hourglass-shaped women in stilettos are typically objectified and fetishized, some people will be uncomfortable with it.

Ultimately, it’s unnecessary. It’s something the game could’ve done without. They could’ve made female-looking robots without the naked, hourglass-shaped, stilettos part. There was absolutely no reason to resort to this particular trope. Of course, we don’t know the intention of the designer when they thought of this look, but since the female form is objectified more often than not, and since naked women are portrayed as meant for men to look at more often than not, you can’t really blame people for raising an eyebrow.

They may be easy to farm, but it’s still annoying to have to stop trying and go back for more tickets every time (it might be especially so for me since I have high ping and the AoE keeps hitting me after I’ve left it because of this, so it’s not uncommon for me to get OHKO’d 2 seconds in). Just like it’s annoying to come back out dead, and to have to run back up if nobody’s there to res you. Nuisances that didn’t really have to be there and add nothing but frustration to the content.

This boss could be great, but it isn’t for several reasons:

1) it’s temporary (even if recurring) content
2) you need tickets (which are now soulbound thanks to a very mystifying decision) to attempt it in spite of the high ohko ratio
3) you come out of it dead, have to spend money on repairs (and a waypoint, if nobody’s nearby) to try again (plus run back if you had to waypoint)
4) as with most “challenging” content as of late, it’s twitchy and heavily reliant on timing and unfriendly to even the slightest amount of lag (everything OHKOs you, half a second is precious)
5) it’s also heavily reliant on luck (the pull orb spawning close to you, you having enough endurance left to dodge the aoe, a clone not spawning on top of you)

If there weren’t tickets and the arena was instanced (which would lessen lag) I would have a lot less negative things to say about this.

I did it on warrior by using rifle and health regen and running around in circles at a range. Have you tried scepter on a zerker build? Guardian has very good regen so it’s a long while before the oozes’ attacks become a problem.

Soloed Evon’s on my necro just now, did Kiel’s with a 4 man group.

Necro has a lot of mobility restriction options so it’s one of your best choices if you have one. Here’s the build I soloed with:

Armor was all yellows (Knight’s) with Ruby Orbs; Weapons were all yellows zerker dagger/warhorn; Trinkets were all greens lv80 ruby (and Mad Memoires complete on the back because why not).

Traits because I was too lazy to retrait 10/30/0/30/0, key traits Spiteful Removal, Spectral Attunement, Dagger Mastery and Quickening Thirst.

Utilities Signet of Spite, Spectral Grasp and Spectral Wall. Elite was plague form. Healing goes to Consume Conditions since you’ll be dealing with quite a few of these.

Strategy consisted of standing a bit far behind the spawn on the left, then chaining Spectral Grasp > basic attack chain (3 attacks) > Dark Pact (skill 3) > attack chain until immob was about to wear off > Wail of Doom (skill 4) > attack > if necessary Life Siphon (skill 2) to range the plunderer as they get away. That was basically the strategy for killing any given plunderer whether they just spawned or were running back. Leg it behind the rock to lose aggro.

Spectral Wall came in handy when Spectral Grasp was on CD and a plunderer was heading back with gold – drop it in front of them and gain a few seconds as they’ll run into it and fear away 2 times. Don’t use it on plunderers with no loot as that’ll make them run toward the loot. Other options to hold them back when your chain skills are on cd are Signet of Spite to wear them down with conditions while crippling or put up Locust Swarm (skill 5) then follow them closely since it’ll cripple them and give you speed, letting you attack at close range while they’re moving. Death Shroud is a last resort for when they’re out of your reach and nearly dead, since it gives you long range attacks (or for when you need to live). Plague Form can also give you survivability if you draw aggro since it gives stability and boosts your HP, so it can help you get away as needed. Locust Swarm also helps you leg it when you draw aggro.

It’s possible to get 80+ points if you’re the first to die and use your motes wisely. 15 motes can give up to 30 points from just stalking a survivor and dropping trap #1 (which is harmless) on their path. People who are very bad at survival can just focus on scavenging/killing as much as possible during grace period for some starter points, stay there and let themselves be killed when it’s over, then go on a mote collecting spree and stalk survivors for 2 points per trap.

I tried a few times on my zerker Mesmer too but eventually got fed up since my clones/phantasms were drawing aggro rather than helping (and I lacked a decent immobilize skill, which was a problem).

Anybody who has a hard time dodging headshot should probably be playing another video game title. ^_________________________^

I have high ping and I keep getting hit by headshot mid-dodge (literally while the dodge animation is ongoing). I actually have to dodge before the skill fires, which makes it considerably harder since I have to rely on timing rather than a visual cue. But oh well.

The pistol is one of my only complaints – I’ve seen someone hold on to it until there were only 2 left and then kill the other guy instantly. Other guy cried BS and pretty much everyone who was there agreed.

My other complaint is a certain hiding spot which is also a choke point that makes you nearly immune to everything except another survivor coming in. Even then, you can lay a few traps in front of you, there’s only one way in and even Karka spawns can’t harm you in there, so if you get there first you win unless you starve. One guy abused this spot a lot and got several consecutive wins until everyone got fed up and started chasing after him to prevent him from getting in there.

Basically, what annoys me are the tools for cheap wins – I’m all for strategy/scavenging/killing for rations and trying to starve everyone else out, but insta kills and half-invincible spots are a bit much.

I just finished the achievement. It’s time consuming but doable. You can get 50+ points most matches if you play it smart.

If you’re really good at surviving – stock up on rations and hide. You’ll get a big point boost for winning.

If you’re not good at surviving – don’t try. As soon as Evon announces he wants to see bodies drop, let someone kill you. It’s much easier to get points as a ghost if you’re the first to die – camps will be chock full of revenge motes and you can get a whole bunch. Each mote is 1 point. If you have an abundance of them that you can pick up (max motes you can carry is 15, so more would be wasted), drop traps and try to kill players. Drop traps in front of players, not on top of them.

Once you got as many motes as possible, find a survivor and follow them. Try to stay ahead of them by a bit and drop the #1 skill in front of them. It costs 1 mote and gives you 2 points. You can get 20 points this way with 10 motes, which is more than what you’d get by dropping a Karka on them and successfully killing them.

Basically, if you’re bad at surviving, die ASAP and collect as many motes as possible for free points, then drop the harmless traps in front of a survivor so you can milk your motes for points.

Also keep in mind each (non-winning) chest has about 8-9s in it, so even though you’ll waste a lot of time you’ll also make a bit of money.

The Aspect Arena minimap sometimes breaks when you fall to your doom (as opposed to being killed by a player). It becomes a portion of Queensdale instead (the vicinity of CM, for me).

No, if you cross first you get 175 points and not 165. Whoever crossed first left the race before you crossed the finish line. But apparently now you did get first place proper, so congrats!

Someone crossed the finish line before you and left the race, which makes your name appear as top player in the credits at the end, but doesn’t actually count you as first. The score for crossing first is 175, not 165. You can tell 145 and 95 are also missing from the credits, which means those players also left the race instance before the race itself was done.

Happened to me before when I crossed second, too.

End result is that a very good connection from Australia’s East Coast has around 250ms ping, with 280-300ms being a more “average” connection. As you start moving west across Australia, it increases more as it takes time for the packets to propagate across the physical cables in Australia too. (We have about the same landmass as the US, so think East Coast US to West Coast US type links).

Aussie player here also. And I’m on the western side of Australia. I can confirm that my latency is constantly 400ms+.

how do you check it? Anet suspiciously don’t allow players to check it (to my knowledge), unlike nearly every other competitive game out there.

If on Windows, start > search “resource monitor” > open resource monitor > network tab > check “Gw2.exe” > see active connections with GW2, including ping.

People can EARN their achievements when they’re not heavily dependent on something that they can’t control – ping. Lag of any kind makes the race 100% unwinnable (movement skills won’t work, send you to your death, lock you in place for several seconds, among other things).

The race’s mechanics are broken. Match fixing is the only way for some people to get the achievements, and not due to a lack of skill, but due to the fact their actions don’t actually trigger immediately, unlike people who are close to the servers, whose actions fire much faster.

A legitimate argument. However, I am still angry that I can’t get a decent match up and that I’m being hassled for not letting people win.

Yeah, I understand your frustration with that. Both sides have legitimate complaints, I think. It would already help some if people in any given match were close to each other, geographically, or if the matchups took people’s placement in previous races into consideration – that way the players who aren’t as good or have worse ping would race each other rather than the people who are better or live closer to the server.

Adding my experience here as well. Although I managed to get the 40 crystals with a lot of trial and error, lightning pull is really infuriating and doesn’t work correctly 80% of the time. When I’m lagging harder, the other two skills get jerky, too. I had similar problems with laggy jumping pads in the AB JP.

Sanctum Sprint is unwinnable. No matter how well I perform, I always end up 8th or 9th. Movement skills will lock me in place for several seconds instead of working, for instance.

I’m in South America (Brazil).

I agree. If you have bad ping or any form of lag, Sanctum Sprint is unwinnable. I only managed to finish first because I was lucky and landed an instance where everyone who already had first would stop before the finish line so someone who didn’t have it yet could get it. Light Dash is shorter, the lightning leap will often make me fall halfway through or get jerky and jump over the target spot. Sometimes when near one of those lightning rod type triangles, it takes up to 2 seconds for skill 3 to switch to the insta leap (which can also get laggy). Sometimes the wind jump boost will also get jerky.

Emergencies don’t really care about your hardcore gamer status, though. Even the most hardcore of players will sometimes have things in their life that take priority over playing. It happens.

I wouldn’t mind seeing this, though what I’d really like is a way to res back inside the JP itself rather than the nearby WP. And not because you fall and die a lot, but because depending on where/how you fall, res bugs out and people can’t get you back on your feet – so using the WP is the only way to respawn. That gets very annoying.

You’re right, luck is a big part of this. It’s just meant to be a fun achievement though, in a game that’s only been around for a few hours.

Perhaps if it’s truly an issue we’ll change it to something else.

I for one would appreciate it if it was changed. As it is, luck isn’t a “big” part of this – it’s the only part of this. People don’t behave like mobs that follow you around blindly. If people stayed dead after going down, perhaps this would be more manageable, but as it is it’s 100% dependent on you getting lucky with karka rolls while holding a crab. Not really an achievement when it relies entirely on everyone else failing at the same time.

It could be changed to what people mistake it for (be holding the crab at the end of the match) or just “lead karka to kill people x amount of times” if you still want people falling for the karka roll to be a part of it.

Exact same issue in Maguuma, so definitely not just one server. Brenda did reset at one point, however. Trying her escort again now to see if that’ll spawn SB.

Edit: Initiated Brenda’s event and SB’s preevents started immediately after. Brenda reset after the event where centaurs attempt to steal brew.

Dungeon Patch Discussion 2/26

I don’t actually play a ranger in FotM and this is largely parroting what others have said, but I have run several instances with a ranger and there are always issues when there’s one (or more) rangers in the party:

- Agony, as others have said, will insta-down the pet.
- Several bosses and strategies rely on effective kiting (e.g. jellyfish, dredge fractal boss), avoiding combat in some situations (e.g. cliffside, volcano boss to avoid triggering the next wave of elementals) and so forth, which means the ranger is often yelled at to pull their pet out of combat.
- Pets significantly slow down progress in the Jade Maw boss by being marked for attacks when they can’t pick up crystals/reflect back the attack. Rangers are the most significantly affected since most other classes (except necros with the compulsory trait that summons Jagged Horrors) can choose not to call in their adds, and rangers can’t stow their pet in combat.
- Lick Wounds and Search & Rescue will often result in the pet standing around doing nothing. S&R is canceled when the pet dies and can’t be used when the pet is down (Lick Wounds, somehow, can). You get hit with full CD if the skill doesn’t work due to the bug or being out of range (no range indicator).

In the end, in a fractal, the pet ends up just being a huge nuisance since it slows down the Jade Maw fight with next to no benefit. At the very least making the Jade Maw stop targeting downed pets should be a thing. Can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen the maw targeting the same downed pet over and over and over while everyone else sits there twiddling their thumbs waiting to be able to continue the fight (and shooting the ranger dirty looks).

Hey,

Myself and 4 other (Maguuma-based) guildies are considering migrating from our current guild (with mostly inactive members and leadership) to one with active leaders. It’s possible other guildmates may be interested in following suit, but it’s only been discussed between the five of us for now. Long story short, our GL is absent for personal reasons and other people with the leader rank aren’t around. We’d like to participate in guild missions and other such content, but can’t because of that.

We’re all active, play pretty much daily. We’re friendly and talk in guild chat often. Most of us have several 80s and all have at least 1. We run dungeons, dragon events and fractals constantly (the latter daily), some of us are curious about PvP and don’t go into WvW due to a lack of organized groups. We’re some of the most active members of our guild. It’s not 100% certain yet we’ll go cruising for a new home but we are strongly considering it, and we’re curious if anyone is recruiting.

Thanks for considering us.

Constant lag and inconvenient Disconnects...

Maguuma server / Sparkfly Fen map, just now.

Tequatl event absolutely unplayable, everyone on the map reported lag. I disconnected twice during the fight, didn’t get credit/the chest at the end. Got a whisper from another user who also disconnected twice.

Lag seemed to go away entirely after the dragon was dead.

Character moves forward on his own.

There’s a bug that causes this to happen if you try to interact with an item while on the move. Unsure if this is the case for you but it’s happened consistently under these specific circumstances for me.

It would be nice if the tooltip correctly reflected this after the item is soulbound though! I have some items I’ve upgraded and they never have the little soulbound marking on them after upgrades, only after they’ve been equipped if they’re soulbound on use.

Uncategorized Fractal - "Invulnerable!"

Right now me and a couple of guildies are doing a daily fractal run (level 10) and we’re at the Uncategorized Fractal. It seems like every other second the harpies we attack (and at one point the champion Ettin and Flame Legion Shaman too) become invulnerable to our attacks, in spite of still aggroing us/being able to hit us. We’ve been at this fractal for an hour now because we can’t seem to kill these things fast enough with how often they become invulnerable to ranged attacks.

Just posting to say this happened to my group last night and the only solution we found was for the affected players to log out, then back in (since you can rejoin fractals now). Pointing this out in case anyone else affected by this bug reads this before it’s fixed.

I know there are tons of requests I haven’t gotten to yet but I’m afraid I’ve run out of steam for the time being (I’m taking requests on my Tumblr also and I think I’m all sketched out). I’ll try to come back to these and get them done eventually though! I just can’t promise to keep delivering at the same pace. Thank you all so much for the interest and the kind comments – I got good practice out of this.

Wow, I love your drawings. If you have the time I’d love to see your take on one of my characters. As I have a sea of alts I narrowed it down to two of them and I’d love to see your take on either!

First there’s Donna Ravensong, norn necromancer. Despite appearances she’s often quiet and sometimes quite shy. She’s sometimes seen in the company of a black cat, which is small by comparisson to her but not entirely dwarfed (she’s a tiny norn)

Then there’s Kixi Dawn, Sylvari ranger. Wide-eyed, enthusastic, perky. She favours using a longbow if she’s fighting but tries to avoid it instead choosing to talk to people if she can. She almost always has her fern hound ‘Skritch’ with her.

Feel free to poke me if you want more information. I just didn’t want to go nuts with things. Feel free to exercise artistic license and go nuts with playing with poses etc and thanks so much for doing this for people.

Hi I’m not sure what happened to your necro’s hips I swear they looked fine when I sketched the skeleton but then this happened

…I have no idea what the size ratio from cat to small Norn would be, so I totally winged this. And her hands (I’ve been winging hands for a while now, I should stop that…)

I am the opposite of modest, I just admit it when I’m too lazy to get things done properly (which is always). But thank you!

OK so for Sunrise I shamelessly traced over an in-game model for contours because jesus sword aren’t you fancy. He’s also not quite holding it properly because only after I made his hands I realized they should’ve been positioned differently but I got… lazy…

It’s probably not good enough to be a desktop picture but I had fun with it anyway!

That is awesome!, do you mind if I ink/colour it? The pose is fantastic, I didn’t even notice the hands. Really great job! Thank you!
