Do longtime players get free items too? (Wizard Hat; Merged)

re: setting ANet back financially

No, but it is going to make their current offer seem less appealing. Adding an exclusive free item to the offer does give people a sense of “I’ll miss out if I don’t buy this now” – so people buy it sooner rather than later.

(There is a potential problem here – if this becomes a trend for future offers, it may turn people off from buying the game now just in case something that looks cooler comes up later – so they may choose to wait for the next promotion instead. Though this problem is largely mitigated by the fact people are usually in a hurry to buy/play.)

Making the hat available to current DDE owners as a gem store item would keep the offer appealing – because that means you’ll only get the hat for free if you buy the game now – while not shutting off current owners from getting the hat altogether.

(Though to be honest I doubt I’d ever use the hat, I think it looks pretty unappealing – I just like owning limited edition type things. This isn’t a dealbreaker for me, one way or the other, but I still think it’s a somewhat poorly handled business decision.)

The issue with the car comparison is that, if you want, you can get yourself a new car without your old car going to waste. In this particular case players who already have the game have no means whatsoever of getting the hat unless they both purchase the game again and make a whole new account (while losing everything that’s bound in the current account). With cars, you can sell your old one to make up for part of the cost of a new one, and you don’t lose any of the things you used your old car for.

Making the new DDE available as an upgrade to existing customers would make the car comparison stick – when you trade in your old car for a new one, you spend money too. Keep existing and new players happy. One doesn’t have to exclude the other.

I have to agree that a smarter move would be making the hat available for a price to existing customers. Making an item impossible to obtain for current players is a questionable move – using events they got to participate in and such as an excuse is silly, too. It’s understandable when newer players are locked out of content that expired before they came in – I mean, they weren’t around at the time, they couldn’t have participated in the first place. But when you are around at the time of the release of content (even if it’s just a silly hat) and you are just outright denied any means to obtain it without having done anything wrong, it is a virtual slap to the face.

Put the hat in the gem store for a price. There’s still incentive to buy now – free 2000 gem upgrade and free x gem hat – and you don’t block out the players who already bought the game.

Yamagawa’s proposed solution(s) seem elegant enough, assuming his assumptions about the current system are correct – but I’d like to back up the one that seems like a fairly simple modification that would resolve the problem for now, which is displaying the enemy’s name tag even without the model (except when stealthed/other situations that would hide the name tag). That way, even if you can’t actually see the model, you know an enemy is there. The idea of rendering a low quality model first (or even just red dots on your map once the enemy is within your field of vision) sounds pretty good to me, too.

I don’t WvW often, but my $0.02 after going in yesterday and wondering why my allies kept popping in and out randomly – the old system was a lot less confusing for me.

I think the main issue with Trahearne is that it feels like he is in place so our characters wouldn’t have to speak a lot. With five races and two genders per race, if our characters talked a lot ArenaNet would have to record a lot of dialogue. Trahearne solves this by saying most of the things it should be our characters saying, such as rallying the Pact army for an assault. The issue, of course, is that is very much feels like he is doing something our characters should have done instead.

This actually makes a lot of sense, especially when you factor in the cost of voice acting. Still, yeah, it’d have been nice for it to be handled in a way that doesn’t make him seem like a total spotlight hog.

Alt+F4 is no escape
If someone that you’re fighting disconnects during combat (via Alt+F4, killing the client process, etc.) their character will be instantly killed, death penalties will be applied, and XP & loot will be handed out as usual.

Why not instead leave the character of the player in the game for 10-20 seconds, vulnerable to attacks? This alternative method seems to be well established in plenty of similar online games, as it would avoid issues like being stuck in combat state without actually being attacked. If no enemy manages to kill this player within the time-frame, then no one should get any loot or death penalty.

That sounds like a fair alternative to me.

Now, I have only been playing the game for a little less than month so I could be wrong, but isn’t the only death penalty damaged armor? If that is the case, damaged armor isn’t THAT costly and I don’t think accidentally getting damaged armor because the game crashed or logging off when stuck in combat mode on occasion would be horrible considering the exploit that it fixes. Please correct me if I’m wrong. I’m not afraid to admit I’m a noob

It depends on the piece of armor. I’ve noticed the repair costs go up the higher your level is, so I’d wager the more expensive the armor, the more costly it is to repair. I’m not sure what the repair bill is at higher levels though since I keep my alts in level range and they’re all 45-47 currently.

There is also the fact that when you log out of WvW you’re put back wherever you were in the world – and if you weren’t in a city you’d have to pay for waypoint costs too (since you’d be dead). At 45-47 it can be ~60c for short trips.

The ALT+F4 code should only apply for being in the downed state, if you ask me. I have, on numerous occasions, been stuck in combat mode in WvW and elsewhere and had to log out/in to fix it. I would not want this to kill me, give some random player who hit me thirty minutes ago rewards, and damage my armor. That’s terrible!

I also really hope that change only affects WvW. That would be a nightmare for PvE if it got implemented in a sweeping manner.

The problem with it only affecting downed players is that players would then get in the habit of alt+f4ing when they’re about to be downed, so it wouldn’t solve the problem – but I agree with the concern re: getting stuck into combat mode, happens to me very often and the only fix is either logging in/out or killing any number of things, which in WvW is obviously problematic for a number of reasons. Wouldn’t want getting stuck in combat mode due to a bug to end up killing me.

“Alt+F4 is no escape
If someone that you’re fighting disconnects during combat (via Alt+F4, killing the client process, etc.) their character will be instantly killed, death penalties will be applied, and XP & loot will be handed out as usual.”

Does this mean that you’ll be insta-killed if you disconnect when in combat mode, or strictly when you’re currently in the middle of fighting another player? Because it’d suck to be stuck in combat mode (e.g. after being hit by trash mobs) and disconnect (accidentally or just because you’re done for the day) only to find yourself dead and with damaged/broken armor when you log in again.

If it’s strictly when you’ve been hit recently by a player during combat then that’s great, though!

Either way. PvE got more interesting this way too

My only concern is the fact that sometimes you get stuck in combat mode for some reason (happens when outside of WvW too, happened to me in the Uncategorized Fractal once, that was… interesting) – so even when you’re not actually in combat you could be stuck in combat mode be and affected by this change. So having a way for this change to tell if you’ve been hit by a player recently (or if you’re downed, obv) instead of just affecting players in combat mode would be nice. :o

Ranger Movement Speed

I really don’t think necros and elementalists need better skill speed buffs. Elementalists can be traited for speed and get a buff from a staff skill/have several dagger skills to help move along faster and can be the hardest class to catch in the game if played right. Necromancers can get really, really long speed buffs with shadow walk+warhorn (you can get over 40s of swiftness with only a 15s CD overall). I know I don’t feel the need for better speed buffs on either of those but I am thrilled about the 25% speed increase on my poor ranger. I’ll gladly drop one of my other skills for it.

As for the Black Widow pet, I dunno, I figure the discrepancy is fair since it’s not an accessible pet for anyone who didn’t play GW1 extensively. But that may be just me.

Either way I am so excited about this news oh my god.

You can always waypoint away before someone hits you or, worst case scenario (though this is frowned upon) alt+f4 to leave the game with no penalty (other than +1 to death count if you’re down). I get caught by groups when I’m in WvW too (and I normally go in for monthly kills or for exploration, not for fighting) – it’s frustrating but that’s sadly part of being in a massive PvP zone.

Disclaimer: not a QQ topic

Okay so a friend and I spent half an hour debating what we think would be ANet’s best course of action in response to this entire Lost Shores mess and we were just about ready to agree to disagree when suddenly we were enlightened.

We were talking about how we like skins and everyone else likes skins (probably) and we think poking fun of all the failures would perhaps not be an ideal solution, but it would at least be something cool to come out of all of it, and a way to apologize to players for all the mess without affecting the economy or… anything, really.

Therefore, we propose ANet give everyone two free shirt skins:

- A t-shirt called “I participated (or didn’t) in the Ancient Karka event and all I got was this lame t-shirt”

and

- A consortium shirt that says CITIZENS
(probably with a description containing Blingg’s full speech or just COMING SOON THE NEWEST AND MOST UNIQUE RESORT DESTINATION IN ALL OF TYRI—CITIZENS)

(or a single skin that combines both of these ideas)

No, really.

I mean, okay, I know this will probably actually never happen, but I would seriously have taken those over the actual prizes I got from the Ancient Karka Chest. The shell I can buy, the precursors I can get, 20 slot bags I can craft, but these would be completely unique and they would make me smile after the trainwreck that the event itself was. And it’d be something positive amidst all of the issues the event had. It wouldn’t really erase all the frustrations and mistakes, but honestly? I would love it. And I would take that as compensation, any day.

Server is Maguuma.

This meta event chain can’t proceed because the Champion Ogre Beastmaster (under step “Help Lieutenant Fynn and Kor the Warcaller assault Sootpan Kraal”) keeps healing itself, making it impossible to kill. In a group of 4 we got him down to 25% HP once, after which he kept fully restoring his HP every time we hit 75% HP or so. Should be noted he started healing after we got him stuck near a fence, though I’m not sure if that’s related. Getting him away from the fence didn’t help as his health continued to reset.

Edit: It was possible to kill him within his camp, but not outside of it, apparently.

How do they fix a bug if they don’t look into what caused it to break first? You can’t just magically fix something if you don’t know how/why it broke. That’s like telling a mechanic not to look at what could be wrong with your car, just fix it. How do they fix it if they don’t know what the problem is?

Also you can’t just roll back a patch. You need to release a new patch to overwrite the old one.

I’m bummed as much as the next person, but really, “just fix it” isn’t going to get it fixed any faster.

Edit: Escorted her all the way back to the Kraal and then back again and the event finally finished.

Blazeridge Steppes, “Help Lieutenant Fynn and Kor the Warcaller assault Sootpan Kraal”, part of The Ogre Assault meta event chain: Champion Ogre Beastmaster kept fully healing out of the blue, making it impossible to kill. Most we got was down to about 25% HP, after which he kept healing at 70%+.

Edit’s nth Descendant: It is possible to kill him, but has to be done within the vicinity of his camp’s flag or his health will reset frequently.

New to race - tips about what to do/specialization

in Sylvari

Posted by: neon.4863

neon.4863

I’d say Ranger seems like a common profession for Sylvari NPCs, so there is that. I’ve seen a couple of Warrior NPCs too, so that also seems fitting. Sylvari seem pretty in tune with nature as a whole so Ranger (with taming animals) and Elementalist all seem appropriate. But they seem like the least obvious of all races re: which class fits.

Humans could be anything, depends a lot on backstory too. A human raised on the streets would be most fitting as a thief, for instance, while a noble may be a more… “dignified” class, so to speak.

Charr are easiest: Warrior (Blood Legion), Engineer (Iron Legion) or Thief (Ash Legion). When picking a sparring partner, Dinky’s description says he’s picked on for being a Guardian, so that class would be unlikely to be glorified. Elementalists are probably a little too close to the Flame Legion, too.

Norn are all about glory and booze but also animals, so Warrior and Ranger seem to be the most fitting. Most Norn we encounter out there are warriors, too.

Asura actually seem to fit Engineer the most, since they like to build and tinker with things.

Ultimately though you can roleplay as any class you want, since if you’re roleplaying you probably have a background for your character anyway and so you can make whatever excuse you want for their class. :p

Like many others I like to do things at my own pace. Grouping for dungeons is pretty fun, and finding random zergs to take down mobs with is fun also. I usually answer map chat requests for help taking down champions/group events, too. But when out doing renown hearts, gathering etc I much prefer to be soloing. That way nobody slows anybody else down, whereas in group events &c a group is actually speeding things up instead.

I party most often for party chat rather than actually running together, with people I know. That way we can still run off and do our thing and then notify each other of ongoing DEs for the others to join in.

List of Minor Bugs

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: neon.4863

neon.4863

These are all really small bugs/typos/consistency errors that don’t warrant their own topic, so I figured I’d dump them all into a single list.

I also have a list of dynamic events that can get stuck over here in the Dynamic Events subforum.

I only have minor bugs in the Harathi Hinterlands area for now since that’s where I’ve been exploring.

Harathi Hinterlands

In the renown heart “Train with the Company”, if you try to use the warhorn (Hawkes’ birds) on the rat nests by interacting with them directly, the skill activates but doesn’t work, although the nest will disappear (no rats come out). You need to stand next to the nest and use the skill instead for it to work.

In the bandit camp at Wynchona Woods, the bandit engineer that mans the turret is labeled as “Harathi Engineer” in spite of being a human bandit.

In the Dynamic Event “Break the captives out of the centaur slave cage”, the enemy is marked in the event tooltip as a veteran, but is actually a champion (correctly labeled in the enemy name). Also, unsure if working as intended, but you can’t enter the cage – you’re immediately kicked out of it if you try.

Miscellaneous

Food

Various food items are marked as giving “+10” bonus exp, without the % next to it. For the longest time I wondered why I was getting less than 10 exp per kill with those items active. Tooltips are also very inconsistent for this; some will say “+10 Experience from kills”, others “+10% Experience from kill” and others “+10% experiance from kills”. Halloween food says “+15% Experience from Kills”. Caps inconsistencies and typos are in the tooltips themselves.

The food item Bowl of Bean Salad has a wrench marking in its tooltip instead of the apple marking.

Trying to filter for food consumables in the TP only returns some alcohol items.

Targeting

Autotarget will very often call targets that are out of your line of sight, such as behind a wall or underwater when you’re still on land, in spite of there being visible enemies closer to you.

A lot of support/ally only skills will cause your character to start auto-attacking nearby enemies if you have autotarget on (it’s easy to tell which skills will do this since they have the red bar under them when they’re “out of range”). This also happens when elementalists switch into air attunement (which also has the range marking under it).

Auto-attack will often cancel out for no discernible reason even though the enemy is still targeted.

Equipping

I already reported this elsewhere but can’t hurt to reiterate: if you try to equip an item while you have the “you are encumbered” message/popup on, you’ll equip, but you’ll lose the item you had equipped previously. It won’t be added back to your bag, it’ll simply vanish. This happens even if you have room in your bag for what you had equipped, and even if you have extra free slots (from selling, storing or destroying other items after becoming encumbered).

Came back to this thread with some thoughts on Necro.

I had been playing a minion Necro for the most part and had some difficulty leveling… switched to well and holy moly is there a difference. Dual dagger+wells is my current build and it can seriously melt huge mobs with ease if you manage to keep moving/dodging. I put Flesh Golem for my elite skill mostly to create a diversion while wells are recharging. Secondary weapon set is scepter+warhorn (speed buff and condition stacking for particularly tough mobs). Necros can also stack really long speed buffs (warhorn 2 + shadow walk + warhorn 2 = 50 seconds straight of swiftness, with only a small cooldown before shadow walk is available again) so it’s my favorite class for running around (especially for WvW map completion since being quick is a good thing). A tanky necro can melt faces fairly easily and if traited for 50% extra damage when downed you’d have to get mobbed really hard to not be able to rally. My current new favorite PvE class. Haven’t done a dungeon on this class yet so I can’t really say anything about that.

I have done dungeons on my Mesmer though and I have to say it’s my favorite class for running fractals. All around useful and versatile, can go back to portal people left behind, can really speed things up in the swamp fractal, and lots of fractals have small closed spaces for fighting so Time Warp can reach nearly everyone simultaneously.

For my ele I go dagger/dagger in solo PvE and keep two earth elementals (one lesser one regular) out to absorb damage. I don’t have a lot of problems with that setup, but I’m also only level 40 (altoholic here, I need to keep all my alts at an even level… and all 8 are level 40).

Mesmer is very very squishy solo and a very terrific backup, so they shine their most in a group imo. Stacking conditions and buffs plus time warp… generally if I’m on my mesmer in a group I’ll be the last one standing if everyone gets wiped.

To be honest, I wouldn’t have guessed that was what the “unique” in the item meant, either (I haven’t MMO’d in many, many years). You can’t really blame someone for not guessing what a term means when they’ve never heard it before. Unsure if RTFM applies since OP simply misinterpreted the term and didn’t realize there was a mistake in their interpretation in the first place. Account Bound and Soulbound are intuitive terms, “unique” less so, especially since even though it’s supposed to be one-of-a-kind a single character can actually carry more than one. Just a red warning in the item when you already have one, e.g. “You can only equip one of these”, would get rid of the potential confusion while not bothering people who already know what it means.

Sucks either way, but the more you know. At least you can use it on an alt, as has been said.

I couldn’t get into GW1 because of the level 20 cap (I need to always feel like I’m progressing somewhere with my character or I’ll get bored and quit) and I got GW2 because they raised the level cap (I wouldn’t have if they hadn’t). I’m not level 80 yet and I’m largely PvE focused, so the changes to gear don’t bother me. I’ll continue to play as long as I’m having fun, and when I stop having fun I’ll stop playing (and paying).

This game’s still very young, so even if I stopped playing now I’d probably come back in a year or two to see how it’s doing. I mean, I just recently went back to GW after not logging in for 5 years to learn more about lore…

Esteemed Toymaker Tixx,

I very nearly forgot to mention another wish: I wish for Lornar’s Pass to auto-complete itself on all my alts because suffering eight times through 43 PoIs and caves and vistas on top of mountains is not in the spirit of Wintersday.

Also, there are dredge there.

Kind Regards,

P.S.: I would also like proper grammar skills so that I do not need to edit my posts in the future. If that’s not asking too much.

Why? Change please!

I assume it’s to prevent things such as making an alt, farming some skill points, using them for an item, then deleting the alt.

But it’d be nice to at least have a way to trade them back in for your lost points.

Dear Toymaker Tixx,

Don’t listen to that guy. I like skritt. But if you must annihilate something, I put in a vote that you annihilate dredge. Nobody likes dredge. If anyone says they like dredge, they’re lying and that makes them naughty so they don’t deserve any presents.

I would also like all the useless effects on food to be turned into Magic Find. And I would like all the traps in the swamp fractal to go away. And better latency. And WvW peace. And a pony.

Regards,

Adding!

Just found one more broken at Fields of Ruin: Escort the Disillusioned Separatist to the Ebonhawke Delegation (dude’s stuck and won’t move).

Can’t seem to edit the first post (hit character limit?) so I’ll add links to reports instead.

I have a lot of fun in WvW when I go in there for my monthly achievements (or world completion), but it intimidates me an awful lot otherwise and I tend to stay far away from it because of all the hostility and competitiveness I see surrounding it. I’m not very competitive, feels odd to be disliked by people I don’t know because other people on my server (Maguuma) do things they don’t like. And then people from Mag are jerks in here and make us all look bad, too… yikes.

Thanks, will be adding that to the list.

I just did the harpy event in Fields of Ruin and didn’t get any credit for it in spite of two-manning it and killing several harpies on the way (as well as being the one to talk to all the villagers so they could escape), so I’ll write that one down as a bug as well.

Edit: Also just did the event where you kill the renegade leaders and there were six or so of the same allied NPC (Boneflayer) instead of just one (???)
