"HoT is not an expansion."

Meh, that’s not an expansion. In my day we had real expansions. This is just a better content release that you probably have to pay for.

It depends on the MMO really. If going by WoW standards, then it does seem kinda small if we’re talking about zones. With HoT, there’s going to be one region, with 3 biomes (basically vertical layered zones?). How many zones will be in Maguuma Jungle though?

Some expansions release a new class, so is GW2. Some release new skills, and so is GW2. These are pretty typical for expansions, without the mention of a new race. We’re getting new specs and new masteries, which is typical of other MMO expansions.

The disappointing thing though is no new mention of dungeons, and only one pvp map with a new game mode, from what we know so far. In other expansions, there’s multiple new dungeons and pvp maps. This is probably going to disappoint so many people.

The living story didn’t fail at delivering story content. It even changed some zones and even added an evolving atmosphere. It might’ve failed at introducing more traditional expansion content though, but i wouldn’t say it wholly failed.

I’ve always wished they would just drop that requirement of needing to be in the zone. I’ve seen many people leave the group because of it. It’s not a good way to introduce dungeons to new players at all.

what do you suggest they do?

How long do they save your spot for?
1 minute? 2? 10?

dc’s happen…it’s not that big a deal.

I’m more bothered by the fact I have to keep clciking “join” to get onto a map..=.=..a queue system is a must!

5 minutes would be reasonable. If a PC crashes, that’s a good amount of time for it to be restarted, and logging into gw2. An internet connection is unpredictable though, but sometimes there’s a brief moment when people get dc’d and then they’re able to get back on again. 5 minutes isn’t too much to ask for.

Keep in mind that a summoning build in the magnitude of Guild Wars 1 or Diablo 2 would never work. It already strains the computer (and the servers) quite a bit with the largest zerg-events. Now imagine possibly adding 500 extra entities to that.

Haha.. that would probably melt some people’s PC’s.

…This is why i prefer automatic grouping, because it places random people in a group, without having them feel any pressure.

Wouldn’t automatic grouping end up with more players being kicked? That would be even more discouraging to inexperienced players.

Actually, it would have the opposite effect, since the people who queued up for the dungeon, would know that they joined a random group, thus eliminating the restrictions that the group creator required. An auto group tool eliminated the elitist and gear-check problems that plagued past MMO’s, but GW2 brought back that atmosphere. This problem doesn’t exist in other mainstream MMO’s anymore, unless you join a hardcore raiding guild that is on the verge of progression raiding.

Somehow things changed though with the introduction of Season 2. Those who don’t log in to unlock it are still being separated from those who don’t.

No they aren’t, you can do all the new content in a party with someone that has it. You just can’t get the achievements. All the open world stuff is open to all too.

A solo instance isn’t “being separated from the community”

I wasn’t sure of the specifics about it, but thanks for clarifying. It’s still segregating the players though. I don’t see how you can say it’s not. They cannot experience the story as the rest of the community, unless they use some workaround with someone else, or buy it with gems. They cannot even get the achievements and rewards from them, which makes it even worse.

The fact that it’s a solo instance is irrelevant, since it has an essential component of GW2, which is the story. If a player cannot share that same experience on his own, then he is essentially being separated from that experience. I don’t see how that is any different than a WoW expansion (or other MMO expansions). You will still be separated from the experience of the quests and their stories.

This is basically how GW1 worked. The campaigns were mostly about the stories, and many players experienced them solo, but the community was still segregated due to this.

Imagine if dungeons worked the same way, and the rewards from achievements were restricted from players who didn’t buy the access to dungeons. That wouldn’t be so different than what is happening now.

I remember a dev saying they didn’t want the community separated like it was in GW1, and that was one of the many reasons they wanted to avoid expansions.

Somehow things changed though with the introduction of Season 2. Those who don’t log in to unlock it are still being separated from those who don’t.

So it could possibly be a paid expansion.

Zerker problem?

The problem isn’t that zerker is a problem. The problem is that zerker seems to be the only solution. It’s all good to use what works, but some people actually ENJOY filling other roles that don’t involve generic glass-cannoning. And the pro-zerker group is right, removing zerker builds would not help. The solution is to find a way to make other builds and roles more useful.

The other problem are people themselves.

They just can’t hit the “create party” button for some reason.

People don’t usually like to lead, so they would rather just join an existing group. It’s the reason why there’s fewer commanders.

Another reason, is because the person who leads is usually the first to get blamed if things go wrong. This is why people don’t want to create groups, and also because they might be new to dungeons.

When they see “experienced 80’s only or gtfo”, they become discouraged before they even start. It sends a negative message to the new player that they suck and aren’t worthy of their group. This is why i prefer automatic grouping, because it places random people in a group, without having them feel any pressure.

[Sugg] How to fix the Zerker Zerger problem

I should’ve clarified more. It was never intended to be a meta playstyle. All playstyles were intended, but the zerker meta became the de-facto meta by the community. It was never intended by the developers, and it was also never encouraged or restricted by the devs (from what i’ve read anyway).

Damage was never supposed to take priority over anything else. The self-reliance of the individual was/is the intended playstyle. This is why all classes got a healing and dodge skill. This is why the traditional trinity playstyle doesn’t work in GW2.

Damage avoidance is only preferred because of dodge, but that doesn’t mean it was ever intended to replace damage reduction.

This just proves that gw2 needs balancing for all different playstyles, otherwise you have one role, which ironically, gives less choice than a trinity mmorpg.

Devs don’t determine what the meta is, players do. Players figure out which of the viable options is the most effective.

And damage was always suppose to take priority. Yes, all builds should be viable, but all builds have one thing in common – damage. All classes were made into DPS with different types of tanking and healing spread out over different builds. It’s why you can’t constantly heal or defend – at some point you have to stop and do damage.

So for the players looking to optimize their gameplay, it was just a matter of seeing what does the most damage. If you nerf zerker then something else will just take it’s place. As long as there are people who min/max, there will be a meta and some damage dealing build will be it. Nothing ANet does, no amount of balancing/nerfing/encouraging/restricting, will ever change that.

And that’s where we disagree. Anet has the power to change it. There has been countless suggestions from more knowledgeable community members, but many have moved on now since the devs never balanced all playstyles against the zerker meta.

The revamped Tequatl , Triple Wurm, and the new living story bosses prove that zerker isn’t needed, because Anet changed mechanics for the A.I. So i really don’t see how you can say they can’t do it, when they obviously have.

I find it funny how some of you think that it’s not a problem. Yes, OP can play how he wants, but that’s just avoiding the problem altogether. The zerker playstyle was never intended. It just became the preferred de-facto meta, because it’s more efficient, and it’s borderline exploiting the A.I. mechanics. Anet just gives it a pass because they refuse to update the A.I. in old dungeons.

Stacking on a boss isn’t tactical at all, and it’s outright laughable. Any other MMO, even action-combat ones, don’t even have this. They have A.I. that responds accordingly to mindless gameplay like this.

Living story bosses are even more challenging. Anet has proved this, but they just don’t want to update the old dungeons with better A.I., as was said during that video interview during feature pack 2.

So you’re saying playing as a glass cannon was not intended? In a game where damage takes priority over defence or healing? Where damage avoidance is encouraged over damage reduction?

I should’ve clarified more. It was never intended to be a meta playstyle. All playstyles were intended, but the zerker meta became the de-facto meta by the community. It was never intended by the developers, and it was also never encouraged or restricted by the devs (from what i’ve read anyway).

Just to add a few inputs to counter, for intended playstyle see below or sig.

As for dodge, back during development I read it was supposed to not have invul frames but just move you away from the physical hit, they changed it to be easier and probably account for lag. But the concept is the same, completely negate damage by moving away from the blow.

Those quotes in that image are irrelevant. It was never intended to be a meta. People really need to comprehend what i write.

That dev is explaining that all playstyles can be used, and it’s funny how that image doesn’t bracket the next paragraph of his.

“My personal approach to stats and skills are based around utility and an even spread. Min-maxing has it’s potential, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I am no help to my team lying dead on the ground, and team-play is more important than personal output, so as long as I can be up helping my team, I am valuable.”

As he said, he wants to play his way, and not Min-max his output for damage. Again, zerker meta was never intended to be the meta.

When I look at the language used in some of the pro/anti sides, I see a startling lack of empathy/emotional intelligence. …on the internet! Shocking.

On to me being less snarky. The “zerker problem” is mostly a PR issue that spawned from items mtpelion pointed out above and the natural inclination for many gamers to optimize.
If players could learn how to use the LFG tool with open communication, we’d see much less of these problems.

If there was an automatic grouping feature that every other MMO uses, this whole issue would go away.

Zerker problem?

Many people (especially in PvE) enjoy high-dps gear because it gets the job done very quickly and effectively if they understand combat mechanics in various situations. I believe that the condition cap is one main reason why condition builds have been underused in PvE, although I think such a cap is good in PvP situations. Either way, pure dps is often the way to go in the current stage of PvE, and as a result we have many groups frowning upon the use of other armor stats; the bad apples of the PvE elite world are the ones who leave a bad image of higher end dungeon runs with their “zerk only or kick” mentality.

Pure DPS is false, pure DPS Armor Stats is correct for the zerker “meta”. Nowadays I mostly play my Thief in dungeons / fractals. Do I use “Pure DPS” gear? Yes I use full Berserker with Scholar Runes, do I use “Pure DPS” in general? Hell no.

I use my Shortbow to provide lots of Blast Finishers for Might, to skip parts or reach places / events quickly, to provide easy Poison Fields for near perma Weakness on hard hitting mobs.
I use my Pistol off-hand to interrupt key skills of trash mobs (like Terragriffs), I use it to provide blindness for mobs in Dungeons.
I use a main Sword combined with Pistol offhand for Pistol Whip to offset Retaliation, for easy spammable personal condi removal and lots of aoe cleave for bunched up mobs.
I use my daggers for lots of DPS to bring down mobs/bosses quickly.

That’s just for weapons, I change my weapons way too often. Same goes with traits and utility skills.

Traiting for condi removal when I apply stealth is amazing with CnD to remove things like lots of Bleed stacks and constant burning.
Extra stealth duration for those skips, and the labyrinth in the Silverwastes.
Fall damage reduction self-explanatory
Providing Might/Fury/Swiftness to myself and my party when I Steal is great support

Smokescreen to protect myself and my party from projectiles AND another blind field, in case I’m out of initiative and can’t use Black Powder, or don’t have my off-hand pistol equipped.

What I’m trying to say is that players can have multiple playstyles and it’s better to change to fit a situation so you are optimal. There is no “perfect” build that can apply to all situations equally, you need to adapt and change to be optimal, therefore just “pure dps” is wrong and is never used in any group that is worth something.

Notice how despite all the changes I do, I’m never “forced” to also change my gear. I can stay in my Full Berserker and provide MASSIVE support for my team, and have super survivabiltiy for myself, without the need to change my gear stats. And this is one of the best things in this game.

tl;dr People say that the there is no variety and different playstyles in the “zerker meta” but that’s completely wrong. There is build diversity/variety, there are combinations, lots of support and control going on in the “zerker meta” that players want so much to destroy.

I think gear stats themselves were a bad addition to the game. It’s gear that needs tweaking, don’t confuse the “zerker meta” with Berserker stats. Those who just use their stats and go 11111 pure dps are NOT what the “zerker meta” is.

And yet, with PVT gear, or any healing gear, all that support is useless if you can’t output the damage that is required for certain groups that want fast and efficient runs. That is why it’s called berserker meta, because berserker gear is preferred.

The New Dailies -- Feedback welcome

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

TL;DR: New dailies are much more obtrusive to normal game-play than old one were and in general, take much more time. Together, the combination is very disappointing.
Rewards are much nicer though, but I would prefer less obtrusive dailies: preferably, the limitations removed (instead of “View vista in Kryta”, view any vistas; instead of “Kill Boss X”, kill any World Boss etc, with the necessary amount of tasks increased if needed, for balance (f.e. 2 vistas or bosses instead of one, 6 events, 20 nodes gathered).

My main problem with the new dailies is that I used to be able to complete a daily, no matter what I decided to do. Now, if I want to complete dailies, I am directed to a very specific area of the game.
Some tasks are worse than others: vistas or gathering are usually fast enough, but things like events or fractals – or worst, specific bosses – take a lot more time and detour from my preferred activities.
I especially dislike the specific world boss one needs to kill: sometimes, due time constraints, this achievement might not be possible.

Another problem I see is that some of the tasks might be impossible to complete for people who are new(er) to the game.

The sad thing is, someone suggested this same idea for the trait system several months ago. Instead of having very specific goals, it could be generalized to make it more accessible for all levels.

They did the same to traits. An overhaul isn’t so good sometimes. It should’ve been gradually changed or not changed at all.

LS was meant as xpac or gap filler?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

Yes, the living story (or living world, as they wanted to call it) was meant to replace the expansion.

So right now we’re not really looking at expansions as an option.

It’s something that’s on the table but it’s not something we’re focused on, because what we want to do is – our idea here is that with Living World, we can do what expansions would have done but do it on a more regular basis.

If we do this right, we will probably never do an expansion and everything will be going into this Living World strategy.

We’ll find out soon whether they did it right or not.

They did some things right and some things not so good. It’s obvious that the living story proved to be a huge challenge for them. I just wish they didn’t test it so soon on the playerbase. It should’ve been tested for at least 6 months on a private testing group.

The living story had potential back then, but it failed to deliver content that people wanted, so now people view it as something negative. It’s actually better now since they’ve had 2 years to refine it.

It’s still a great method of updating content, but it needs to diversify the content besides story content (which season 2 started doing with new zones and armor). Feature packs were an alternative to this also, but it would’ve been better if those releases were interwoven together.

LS was meant as xpac or gap filler?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

I seriously doubt it was meant to be a “gap filler”. It was/is a way to update the game as time goes on. The original concept was to change the world into an ever-evolving landscape. To some extent, it worked, as some zones actually changed. There were new NPC’s, new terrain, and new events happening. Kessex Hills & Lion’s Arch are two examples.

Things started changing though as the story was taking a more prominent role. It started becoming more coherent around the time Scarlet showed up during Queen’s Jubilee. Before that, it wasn’t really clear what was going on. Flame & Frost, Dragon Bash, Bazaar of the Four Winds, Cutthroat Politics, etc. These were very loosely connected storywise.

There are many problems with this approach though, such as, timing and release schedules. Having to meet a deadline every 2 weeks was probably too stressful for some of their employees, and too quick for the players.

The other problems are content, where some was temporary, and also the lack of other updates besides the story component. This is generally why people hate the living story, because there was too much focus on story, and not enough on content updates such as new classes, races, crafting, zones, etc., which are found in more traditional mmorpgs.

"Meta" does not mean "Most Effective"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta

“Any subject can be said to have a meta-theory, a theoretical consideration of its properties, such as its foundations, methods, form and utility, on a higher level of abstraction.”

This definition properly fits for MMO’s.

In GW2, the meta would be the most efficient damage output, if we’re talking about combat in pve or dungeons, but an entirely different meta would occur if we’re talking about pvp.

These metas occur when players go beyond the simple builds and traits in GW2, and start forming different builds that is more efficient.

To expand on this, i use “efficient” because surviving is considered top importance in a combat-focused game, as well as utilizing time to get things done faster.

Efficiency isn’t the only thing that matters though. There are also player-driven events where challenge and entertainment can be considered the “meta” goal, where efficiency isn’t needed.

@OP, sorry, but you won’t find a modern MMO that exclusively caters to only multiplayer. Single-player options are a good thing, due to different time zones and playtimes, that many different people have. If there was only multiplayer options, then you would be waiting on content to finish, until someone else joins. There’s also disconnects and power outages too, so how long would you wait to tackle group content?

How do you propose to balance singleplayer and multiplayer content? It’s easy to say that you want more multiplayer options, but you give no examples.

No, it’s not exclusively tab-target. It’s a hybrid of both, except it’s missing a target reticule. That is the only difference. You can aim at anything and hit it with your skills without a target.

The reason there isn’t a target reticule, is because it interferes with the mouse pointer, but there are many solutions to make it work.

I disagree with the wording about “Buy Dungeon Runs”. I don’t think Anet wants to encourage that. I would change it to “Experienced”, or something along those lines.

How about Crowd Funding to update GW1?

This would never happen. First off, GW1 would need a dev team to continue to update the fixes and add content. This isn’t going to happen. I believe all they have is a support staff for GW1 now. Their focus and resources are on GW2. Second, GW1 is too old, and it would be a monumental task of trying to port it to the same engine that GW2 uses. It would literally take years.

Why don't you like SPvP

Because you have to go through the hassle of building up a template separate from PvE and WvW, which requires a lot of research for each class you use. Not only that, but there’s only one game mode and the maps are small. The UI is also very unintuitive and confusing (at first) to veteran MMO players from other games. It’s built mostly for FPS players. But most of all, it’s just not fun, when everything is so fast paced and frantic, with skills and CC with 2 second durations (exaggerating here), making them worthless to use in the first place. It’s like trying to play counter-strike or COD but with fantasy skills. It just doesn’t mesh well.

There’s been many suggestions to fix the zerker meta, and balancing might for pvp, but i guess they were just ignored. Whoever did this balancing just did it the lazy way.

So, is this their solution to the berserker meta? I guess all those other suggestions to fix it were worthless.

Most of the positive posts i’ve seen are about the story itself and it’s revelation of the sylvari, which was really well done. It has overshadowed most of the negativity on these forums.

What's the Minimum # of new skills you want?

The current weapons could use more skills, but i would rather have them add new weapons altogether, with unique skills.

It will be a nightmare trying to balance any new weapon skills with the current ones. It would probably be easier to just make new weapons with different skill sets.

I wouldn’t mind an expansion, as long as it updates and adds content besides the living story. The game needs to stay fresh, with new professions, zones, gear, weapons, skills, traits, etc.

Stretching animation

Don’t bring it back. Why people want their arms clipping into their brains? Also the stretched texture around the armpits, ew. It was very ugly.

Because animations bring life to characters, and it also gives them differential personalities. Imagine if asura had their idle animations removed, the one where they scratch their head or cross their arms. Idle animations give them life.

Scarlet Briar knew all along?

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Scarlet_Briar

She saw Tyria and the Mists; she saw the insurmountable challenge of the future and her people’s part in it—the sylvari of the tree and the Nightmare Court, Caithe and Faolain—all part of a grand design. And then, for the first time in years, she heard the voice of the Pale Tree, begging her to go no further. After a moment’s hesitation, Ceara pressed on, and her sanity was broken. It is not clear what exactly she saw in the tank, but it is clear that when she looked across the open threshold in her mind, something looked back.

*Ceara above is aka Scarlet, for those who don’t know.

I saw this post at reddit, and found it interesting: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2shww5/spoiler_how_did_scarlet_know/

How did she know what Caithe did to Wynne? Why didn’t she tell anyone about modremoth though, if she already knew?

Factions and open world PvP

Concerning topic title, https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/List-of-Common-Controversial-Forum-Topics/first#openpvp

3. OPEN WORLD PvP / FACTIONS

[~] Threads for reference:

[+] Arguments in favour:

  • That other game has it; we’ve seen it done there and enjoyed it.
  • We want competition. We can’t live without competition in games, a game without competition is boring and is not worth staying in.
  • We invested time/money in our gear, so we want our gear to matter. We do not like equalized stats in sPvP and we do not like zergs in WvW.
  • Separate PvP servers with PvE maps can be added to give PvP/PvE-focused people a choice.
  • Factions add a lot to both lore and gameplay.

[-] Arguments against:

  • GW2 is not that other game. GW2 is a cooperative game, not a competitive game: you don’t compete over loot, nodes and such. For competition, we have two options: sPvP and WvW. If current PvP/WvW game modes are not enough, you can always suggest new ones, but in the boundaries of competitive areas.
  • Open world PvP is detrimental. Different kinds of players exist: those who prefer fair and healthy competition, and those who prefer fierce and unhealthy competition. The first are usually peaceful non-hardcore teenagers and casual grown-up players (which turn out to be the target audience for which GW2 was actually designed in the first place, with all the timidness of content, failproofness and cooperativeness in mind), and the latter are usually aggressive teenagers who are using online games as a sublimation for unsatisfied offline desires of being “better” than others, while not being constrained by offline moral and law limits. This usually leads to offensive behaviour, which can already be seen in both PvP and WvW (with as far as death threat whispers); such things are not tolerated in GW2. Open world PvP attracts the second type of players, and since many mature players already live a moderately risky life, they see their games as a comfort zone to rest in, and not a war zone similar to life, and want GW2 to stay as is.
  • In GW2, not gear, but skill is what matters – even if it is the skill of finding the best team composition or the skill of using Skyhammer’s features in the cheesiest possible way. You cannot really buy ultimate superiority for money in this game. The most you can do is buy gems, convert to gold, get full ascended with infusions, eat the most expensive food, buy all gemstore buffs and go roaming in WvW, hoping that the slight boost in stats will outweigh the skill of your opponent.
  • Even on a separate server, you cannot simply turn a PvE map into a PvP map: it was not designed with it in mind. Furthermore, it will thin down and fracture the community, which contradicts with the Megaservers idea.
  • Factions are too hard to implement at this point of the game’s life when the basics have already been put in place. Factions are too hard to add with the current lore in mind.

[=] Current state of affairs:

  • A lot of people feel that GW2 is a casual friendly cooperative game which was not designed to have open world PvP, and they want it to remain that way. For competition, sPvP and WvW modes were included in the game. New PvP/WvW game modes, including GvG, with separate large maps, are discussed as valid options.
  • Comment from October 2012:

Anything is possible in the future, but I would be sure to not hold my breath waiting.

Back to CONTENTS

As much as i would like openworld pvp and a factional war within GW2, it’s not going to happen. A lot of those points might be good, but it would fundamentally change what GW2 is about, and that wouldn’t sit well with the majority of players.
