I seriously doubt this would happen. The outcry would be tremendous. GW2 would have had to be built with this in mind from the start, to do something like this.

I liked GW1, but i never did play it much, and i first started playing it around 4 or 5 years after it’s release, so that’s pretty much why i wanted to play it’s sequel. Also, when i heard how their dynamic events system was going to work, i was pretty much sold on the game.

I highly doubt that it will be a paid expansion. That would go against everything Anet has promised, even since GW1.

They do not like segregating players due to expansions. To some extent, even GW1 somewhat avoided this (extra campaigns/eotn weren’t required). This is why they strictly stick to a b2p model.

Anet’s philosophy has always been, buy once, play forever.

They only charge for one price to access their service and servers, and anything else they charge for doesn’t deny anyone this access.

Except that the campaigns and expansions of GW1 were required if you wanted access to the new content. Much like traditional expansions.

I’ve also never seen a game have an expansion where, if you don’t buy it, you can’t access the original game or the servers.

As for your buy once, play forever comment, I think you’re misunderstanding what they mean by that. What they’re referring to is that there’s no required sub fee, not that after the initial purchase you’ll never have to buy anything again.

Yes, but the community wasn’t segregated as a whole. A level 20 could still do level 20 content with people. They weren’t separated because the level cap wasn’t increased. In other MMO’s this isn’t true, because they raise the level cap, and you cannot do the new content without extra levels, such as new dungeons, quests, zones, etc. GW1 kept this minimal.

Here’s what i would do as a fresh 80.

Acquire all the traits you want, by doing the tasks or buying them at trainer.
Get all exotic gear if you can, but Rare gear is good enough.
Finish Personal Story, then continue Living Story.
Do dungeons for gold and other things.
Do temple events and world events in general for karma, gold, etc.
Finally, do pvp and wvw if that interests you.

Forgot to mention, this doesn’t have to be in this order.

They reserved the largest room for the longest amount of time of anyone at the conference… if that isn’t hype then what is?

Oh, I am fully aware about what they have done. But they have not SAID anything at all about it. Without people checking PAX we would not even know about it at this time. And that is a rather large difference.

The community is hyping it up. ArenaNet have done nothing other than scheduling an event.

Haha, agreed. There’s going to be so many disappointed people, if it’s anything less than an expansion, or expansion-type content.

The fans can’t be blamed though. It’s all up to Anet to kill the hype or not, but they won’t.

And no, it doesn’t even matter what time of day either, because you’ll get the same results or it will be doubled… The number is very, very low.

These servers are for practice… When you do pvp you do unranked or ranked team queue, and since they now have map voting they are more popular than the other servers.

That just proves my point even further. You can’t be serious. Unranked and Ranked matches aren’t more popular than public play. They never have been. lol.

So no, those “numbers” mean nothing.

Those numbers have always been low, when hot join was the only way to pvp. If you think the new join system somehow brought in more players, you’re deluding yourself.

With the announcement of PAX south though, my interest is piqued again, but i’m keeping my expectations low.

Loot is too abundant and has too much RNG associated with it.

These are major problems with loot in GW2.

Blues and Greens aren’t even needed, except for new accounts, and new players. Just about everyone at 80 will just salvage them or throw them in the mystic forge.

Loot needs to meaningful, and give a sense of accomplishment, such as the rare loots that Teq and Wurm drop.

You’re confusing WoW’s garrisons with housing, which isn’t even comparable at all.

Housing in other MMO’s, such as Rift, Wildstar, Swtor, and Lotro, is vastly different than WoW’s garrisons.

Garrisons are extremely limited in what you can do with them, with regards to customization. Granted, all these MMO’s are a lot better than what GW2 offers for it’s “housing”.

I definitely agree that combo fields should be explained. I’d been running dungeons for months before I understood how they worked. A basic introduction to combat mechanics would also be helpful (how reflects, boons and conditions, CC etc. work).

The NPE addresses most of the other things you mention, I believe.

Agreed, combo fields needs explaining. I actually suggested some ideas months ago on how to do this.

A good and quick way would be to highlight skills on the hotbar, and make the finishers proc like in other MMO’s.

Absolutely not. Tutorial instances drive players away, and do more harm than good at keeping their attention.

A good way to introduce players to new things, is done incrementally as they play.

You also have to take into account the various players. There are some that are new to the genre, and veterans, and even some that are new to gaming and very casual.

To be honest, I don’t believe any of us are qualified or understand fully the development time and cost required for the game. I’d love to have more content too but, I can see why it takes so long to create.

I disagree. GW2 has had very substantial updates, especially during the 1st year. There actually was a lot of content being put out, but the temporary nature of living story makes it seem otherwise. Not only that, but they had multiple teams working on it, instead of on more traditional content such as classes, races, traits, etc.

nexxe.7081

There are a lot of new things that an expansion can deliver to the core game

  1. Player housing
  2. GvG
  3. New races
  4. New classes
  5. New weapons for each class
  6. New utility and elite skills
  7. New crafting disciplines
  8. Raids
  9. Massively expand WvW, new structures,siege weapons,etc.
  10. New continent
  11. Expand the personal story
  12. Guild halls
  13. Level cap increase
  14. Player ships and sailing, sea based zones
  15. New dungeons
  1. No reason why this couldn’t come via Living Story or just a generic patch.
  2. They’re already talking about a CDI on GvG. Also does not need an expansion to implement.
  3. Could be easily delivered via Living Story. In fact, I’d expect them to have planned that from the start.
  4. Could be easily delivered via Living Story. In fact, I’d expect them to have planned that from the start.
  5. Could be easily delivered via Living Story. In fact, I’d expect them to have planned that from the start.
  6. We’ve already gotten healing skills in patches tied to the Living Story so I see no reason why there would be any need for an expansion to add skills.
  7. They’ve been adding crafting recipes and expanding crafting in general (Ascended crafting, revamping the crafting interface) without an expansion so far.
  8. They’ve done dungeons and revamped world bosses with ties to Living Story, no reason they couldn’t do this as well as it’s practically identical in terms of gameplay.
  9. They’ve already changed WvW plenty (adding WvW skills and traps, changing the maps) without needing an expansion.
  10. They’ve already added new areas via Living Story so there’s no need for an expansion to add areas.
  11. Living Story is an extension of Personal Story.
  12. How are guild halls different from player housing?
  13. They should never, ever, increase the level cap for any reason. Increasing the level cap would make all non-Legendary gear obsolete, which would cause a massive shift in the TP, not to mention kittening off everyone who’s spent time getting Ascended gear.
  14. I don’t think this is that kind of game.
  15. They’ve already tinkered with dungeons via Living Story, what makes you think they would need an expansion to do it?

From the looks of it, everything that you think they should put into an expansion they have already experimented with via Living Story or could easily do without an expansion. Expansions are a risk, because it would force all of the current players to re-consider whether they want to keep playing the game and it makes the bar for new players even higher. It’s not exactly news that the bar of entry to a game like World of Warcraft, with their heptillion expansions, is very high due to the costs and hassle of getting them all. And I have to say that one of the best things about GW2 is that you play it whenever you want to. There’s no gear treadmill making your stuff obsolete every 6 months and there’s no monthly subscription.

What an expansion does that Living Story cannot do, is hype the product outside of the current playerbase. Living Story is perfectly capable of delivering everything that an expansion can give, but it doesn’t cost anything for the players except time.

Your response is silly to the point that I think you’re joking or trolling. Of course the living story can deliver all of these things no one ever said it couldnt. The point is that it’s not. The LS isn’t creating g excitement in terms of bringing people back or buildin anticipation. When you receive an expansion in large chunks. It’s about anticipation. Wow players know a year in advance what the expansion is going to be and then wait another year to play it. Anet leaves us in the dark and we really don’t know what direction they will go with anything.

Living story can do things, it’s just not done in a fashion that’s benefitting.

Couldn’t have said it better.

Why do they HAVE to role play in public?

Back to the topic, i don’t think GW2 needs a traditional expansion, but it what it really needs is some of those things on that list in the original post.

The problem is, there is no hype, or any upcoming content to generate excitement, and that’s why it’s hard to get excited for GW2. All we have to look forward to is living story.

A Hard Mode would be nice, but the comparison to GW1 is apples and oranges.

GW1’s classes are vastly different than GW2’s. For one, GW2 doesn’t have a traditional trinity.

Secondly, the AI in GW2 would need to be reworked.

The perception seems to be.. that there’s multiple teams working on multiple projects. Supposedly, they hired a lot of employees, and are working on something big in the background, while another smaller team is managing the current game.

Currently, the game just feels like it’s in maintenance mode, with the exception of the living story content.

I’m playing other MMO’s and doing other things in real life, but i check sometimes on GW2, hopefully to see it get something more substantial, but one day i’ll just uninstall the game even though i don’t want to. Oh well.

Though, what was decorated seemed a larger area than what’s near CP. Ah well, perhaps LA will be repaired before next Wintersday, and since it may be moving back, the DR decorations are only for the one year, and not a lot put into them.

I think the outlying areas weren’t decorated, and the inner parts were.

It depends what you mean by “fail”.

Did it fail at retaining players? The answer is yes, but it wasn’t solely responsible. There were many other factors also, as to why people didn’t stay with GW2.

Did it fail at storytelling? That depends on the individual person.

There’s also other reasons why it failed, depending if you think it failed at content delivery, or if it used up too many resources, where other areas of the game could have been better focused on with more time and resources.

It must have been really challenging for the devs to bridge GW1 to GW2, because they used a timespan of around 200 years. A lot changes between that time. Let’s take our own history into account, and go back 200+ years. A lot has changed since then. Just look at our technological and societal progress. It would’ve been easier for them to just continue the stories of GW1 and it’s lore instead of having such a huge gap of time.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

There’s no doubt they are working on “stuff”, and not just minor things.

People need to keep in mind that GW2 isn’t a traditional MMORPG. It’s always trying to be different. This was the same for GW1 also.

People are seeing this with the wrong perspective. GW2 updates the game in non-traditional ways. So far, it hasn’t updated the more traditional things, such as new races and classes. There has been new zones, pvp maps and eotm, etc., in a more traditional way though.

The problem is, we haven’t been given any future to look towards for the game. There isn’t any long-term investment that players want/need. That’s the real issue.

Marriage

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

A marriage system wouldn’t make sense for GW2.

GW2 is an action-combat MMO with very little RP gameplay.

If it was heavily an RPG, then i can understand something like this happening. As it is now though, the focus is on a combat-oriented gameplay, as most MMORPGs are.

MMORPGs with ‘marriage’ system in them:
- Ragnarok Online
- Dragon Saga
- Lineage 2
- Silkroad
- Eden Eternal
- Conquer Online
- Perfect World
- Flyff
- Runes of Magic
- Maple Story
- Jade Dynasty

You are right, most MMORPGs no one ever heard about probably don’t have this feature.
Also, I believe that there are plenty of people in the game who actually enjoy roleplaying.

Do those MMORPGs have tools for Roleplayers though? I’ve actually tried some of those, and no, they do not. Are there custom character sheets to write biographies? What about animations that are not your typical emotes found in MMOs? Are there family/house lineages? What about outfits and roles that can be switched on the fly? I don’t even roleplay, but i know people who do, and i see what they write all the time, and what they wish they had in MMORPGs.

Most MMORPGs fail to deliver it, but that’s because RP’ers are very tiny minority, and games need to make money to stay afloat. It wouldn’t make sense for GW2 to add this feature when it has a very light emphasis on RP, such as some of those in that list. It would actually be as worthless as mini activities in GW2. If they did add it, there should be some thought put into a marriage feature, but as i said, it wouldn’t make sense for GW2 to do this, because that’s not it’s focus with it’s stories. Ironically, GW2’s living story is focused on relationships, but it’s being told by the writers, and not anything custom by the players. The players use the interactive mechanics with a combat-focused gameplay to experience it.

It’s just more hype, and sadly, more disappointment, because if it’s not new classes, zones, races, dungeons, pvp modes & maps, and anything else that players expect from a traditional expansion in the MMO genre, then it’s really not going to matter anyway.

More living story chapters, and gem store items, isn’t what the players who left, want more of.

Mounts [merged]

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

GW2 could’ve had mounts by now, but it wasn’t their focus. It would take them a long time to actually implement mounts, optimize, and then test them. They would need to design them, code them, and then make new animations for each race and gender.

I’m not saying they can’t do it, but the game just wasn’t designed for them, so they would have to radically design the game around them, because currently, you have 100+ people in zergs, and then if you add more animations on top of that, and more models, it’s going to lag.

WoW, WS, AA, ESO, Swtor, etc., all have expansions and major updates to look forward towards, and gives players expectations, whether or not they live up to them is to be seen, but at least they can be expected.

This is why i’m in favor for an automatic grouping tool, like most MMOs use. GW2 still seems to be stuck in 2004 without this feature. There’s a reason developers made it automatic. It’s more efficient, less spam shouting “LFG”, and eliminates elitists from the public, all the while still leaving them to form their own groups. The fanboys will reject all of this though, without a proper rebuttal.
