It doesn’t take much time at all. From LA down to the Arah WP, it takes roughly 10min on my warrior. Would be faster if it was on my eng, and slower if on my mes.

From my experience (lacking only ranger and necro classes), guardian staff AA and engineer grenades (as well as engineer rifle and pistol AA) are the best for tagging stuff. Tome of Knowledge drop rate

Any idea what the %chance of a Tome of Knowledge to drop from a chest is?

Wondering what it would cost to “buy” a level 80, hypothetically speaking. XP boosts are one thing, but essentially paying for free levels is going a little far in my opinion.

Probably pretty low. With the amount of gems you need to get 1 char to 80 using these tomes, you’d probably gotten 2-5 chars to lvl 80 with crafting. Think of it more as a ‘bonus’ than the actual way of getting to 80.

Stop 'Previewing' new content releases.

in Suggestions

Posted by: penatbater.4710

penatbater.4710

Before someone starts saying “just don’t look watch/read the stuff”, that doesn’t address the actual problem here. New content should be new. Arenanet shouldn’t be encouraging a gameplay mentality where players are basically expected to read how to play the content before playing it – encourage players to figure things out and help each other out. You’re killing the gameplay and community environment as it stands.

Your only real argument is that the presence of these previews has the potential to ruin the novelty of any new content. The problem is, that’s very weak, and the overall impact it has on the community/gamers is hardly evident. Unless every person you see tells you (or rather forces you) to visit the dulfy/guides online before being accepted into a party for a new dungeon, this is not good enough to warrant a change.

You need to take your argument and look at the whole issue in light of the variety of players playing gw2. You have some people who like to explore, while you have some people who want to rush things asap, and people in between. The point of the previews is to entice players to play more, and by seeing what they can potentially see, they might be more inclined to log back in. The previews aren’t harming you or the people from the first group if they choose not to look at it. If people spoil them in-game, well that’s a different matter altogether.

My first game was also Ragnarok. I made a thief, then naively tried to make him “balanced” by putting stats in str, luck, vit, etc instead of pouring everything on agi. So when I learned my classmate plays RO too, and a thief as well, I partied up with him, only to see him do more damage at a lower level than me =/ Every other game I played after that, I liked but only for a certain period. Khan online, RF online, WoW private servers, RO private servers, Flyff, Cabal, Rohan, etc. Gameplay is not that bad, but I didn’t really like them. I played gw1 and loved it, but quit coz I didn’t have any friends to do the hardmode (and that the expansion was coming up and I didn’t have money to buy it).

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

penatbater.4710

tl;dr – How do I deal with grind? I don’t.

Your point is incredibly naive.

Saying basically “If you don’t like the grind, just don’t grind, it doesn’t make any difference to you if other people do” is simply, well, wrong. People don’t exist in a vacuum. And ArenaNet doesn’t have enough resources to make content in the game for everyone.

If you don’t like to grind… Sorry, but a lot of people do, and ArenaNet is not going to make content for everyone. It’s far easier to make content for grinders and farmers (since it’s mindless, easy and basically mediocre content) than for real people, so there’s already a tendency to make more grind instead of anything else.

It’s logical, then, that ArenaNet would focus more on adding more grind to the game than adding fun content. Which means, for those who would rather have fun than pretend they’re Skinner rats… Well, soon they may find they are not ArenaNet’s target audience, and so no new content in the game are not going to be aimed at them.

Southsun is the perfect example of this. Interesting storyline? No. Decent storytelling? No. New, improved dynamic events? No. New world boss with unique mechanics? No. But 200% Magic Find with two identical events repeating over and over and giving a chest after completition? YES.

That is content for grinders. Easy, mindless, easy to build – aka mediocre. And that’s what most of the GW2 community wants, based on ArenaNet’s action. If you don’t like it, pretending the fact that people do wouldn’t change the game for you is not the answer.

It’s actually logical for anet to focus on fun content. But fun content doesn’t mean it’ll be finished 5min after logging in. They CAN make fun content that is protracted. They tried appeasing the farmers with the 200% SSC stuff, and after that, it’s the dragon bash event + aetherpirates. From the looks of it, Anet is trying to appease different player groups by shuffling different types of events and content. Especially wrt the update every 2 weeks thing, they’ll have more opportunities to address this.

Week 1: Farmers
Week 3: Story-people
Week 5: mini-game people
Week 7: scavenger hunters
Week 10: Grinders
etc.

Also, your post is misleading. You’re saying because Anet is focusing on grindy content, you’re not having fun. The opposite is actually the case. You’re not having fun (for whatever legit reason), so you’re trying to justify it by saying anet is making grindy and un-fun content. Realize that one’s perspective plays a huge role in one’s enjoyment of a game. And that’s the point the OP is trying to make.

Things that annoy me in GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: penatbater.4710

penatbater.4710

2. I think that’s a bug, and they should work on fixing it soon. A suggestion, when a cinematic is about to appear (like in dungeons), don’t swap your weapons. I heard the bug thing happens if you swap your weaps just as the cinematic starts. Maybe that can help a bit.

3. not being able to play spvp for a week seems a tad harsh. At least make it a 5-15min delay till they can queue up for the next spvp match (only for afk-ers or people who purposely leave). Idk how they can manage that with dc though.

4. The confirm dialogue is there so you don’t accidentally salvage your precursor, or accidentally buy an ascended that you don’t really need (mostly due to lag/misclick).

5. The only thing that annoys me is the guild chat being erased when I switch toons. I wanna join in on the convo so the missed dialogue is a bummer, but certainly not a big deal for me.

6. There is no correlation between time and prec loot. And imo it shouldn’t be. The reason being is that if it becomes so, the game will become a grind in itself, of logging in x number of hours to get your precursor. I know it sucks you don’t have one, but if you’re true to your last statement (that is, to fight, solve puzzles, etc), why does loot become a problem then? GW2 is the least loot-based MMO i’ve ever seen, and I kinda like it that way. One suggestion to help you is to lessen your focus on the prec. The more you obsess with it, the more frustrated you’ll get. As you’ve said, you want to fight and solve puzzles and stuff, so try to focus on those things. The benefit is two ways: 1.) if a precursor drops, then yay! 2.) if a precursor still hasn’t dropped, then it wouldn’t bother you in the first place, and you still get to enjoy your game. I did that mindset finishing my legendary (got chaos gun cheap, but the other part is still quite a feat). Once I got my gun, I knew I was gonna save up for the legendary. But I didn’t obsess with it, just tried to play the game as much as possible, as fun as possible, while earning as much cash as possible (this means doing fotms daily, cof 1/2 daily, dungeons regularly, and world bosses whenever possible, and doing 5-10 clover tries at a time). Soon enough, I got a bulk of my materials. Let me tell you, the hardest and most infuriating part is the last 40g stretch I need for icy runestones. The other parts didn’t even felt like a grind. It was just that last 40g that felt like an eternity.

So chin up!

My opinion about what things should change

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

penatbater.4710

The reward chances are broken, I don’t think proof is needed here. For reference point, I’ve committed close to 2000 hours in Guild Wars 2 and have never had an item worth more than 5 gold.

Nobody ever promised that you’d get a precursor in less than 500 hours, 2000 hours, 4000 hours and so on.

You conceived an arbitrary expectation for no reason whatsoever, and now rant because it wasn’t fulfilled.

How long do you propose people play before they’re “worthy” in your eyes, of a reward? Because after investing 2000 hours into something and not having anything to show for it most people are going to quit and tell everyone who will listen to avoid the game.

I still don’t get why you’re defending such a bad game mechanic as rng.

Legendaries and similar skins are supposed to be rare, select few people are supposed to have them.

If you insist on arbitrary numbers, let’s do some arbitrary math with your 2000-hour precursors. A population of 2.000.000 players that plays on average only two hours per day, after a year of farming will generate over 700.000 precursors. With 20 precursor models, that’s 35.000 precursors of each type, after only one year.

If you don’t understand how “unrare” that is, consider that TP currently shows about 10.000 Globs of Ectoplasm. Or, there are only about 20-30 each of the cheapest and kittentiest exotic items that are much more easy to come by.

Question here is how it is rare. If it took a gargantuan effort to gather the materials and the requirements took time and effort then yes, it’ll be quite rare. But something thats so dependant on luck, will never be a truly “rare” unique prestige item.

Random luck CAN see someone drop two dusks in a short timespan. That’ll give them one to use, and one to sell so they have the mats. The rest, should then be a small step as they are the easier stuff to atain as you have a clear direct way of obtaining them(exception being clovers, which again are rng).

Meanwhile, another person can farm for months and years on end, and never being able to get this due to having poor drops.

I would far prefer a hard/long way to atain the pre and the other stuff for the legendary, than having rng extend the time it takes to get one. A way where you wouldn’t be able to strike gold with a lucky drop or two and thus get you legendary the easy way. It wouldn’t matter if the precursors are easy to get, if the other parts of the legendary took a different route than it curently does. As it is, much of the focus and talk about the legendary weapons are centered on the precursors, and not the legendary achivements needed to forge one. I feel, that in the curent gamestatus, the legendary weapons are less about playing the game and mastering the aspects required to get one(gift of exploration, gift of battle etc) and more about raw gold and the ever so elusive precursor(which can be atained through more gold)

You forget that the “Random luck” part only consists for 1/3-at most 1/2 of the total price required for the legendary. The only reason that precursors are given the most attention is that unlike the other parts, you can’t farm for it incrementally (unless you buy one in TP). Gift of fortune alone costs 411g average total. The only ones that the precs cost more than 1/2 of the total cost is bifrost and twilight.

@insignya

Actually, the introduction of the FotM split (past tense one) the community in half. I’m pretty sure at that specific instance, there were a lot of people who simultaneously left due to principle.

1. I think the problem is how do you set its ‘hard level’ appropriately to suit both casuals and hardcore? If it’s too easy, hardcore players will scoff at it. Too hard, and casuals will complain.

2. Imo, gw2 doesn’t have a lot of time-gated content. But I guess you’re complaining about the laurels?

Agree with 3-5.

6. Contrary to popular belief, I think wvw has evolved enough (at higher tiers esp) to not devolve into a zergvzerg fest. There are a lot of intricacies in zerg clashes as you’ll frequently see a smaller zerg outmaneuvering a bigger zerg, or a smaller zerg beating a bigger zerg just because they know how to coordinate (and outfit) their players better. However, this is true only for the wvw-ers. Casual players (who are totally welcome in our wvw maps btw :p) will have to resign to sticking with the commander, and even then it’s not so easy to do.

7. I think they’re adding them bit by bit. They added SSC, then changed it with the living story, and now it’s different than before. It’s sad that people only go there during the living story updates though I wish they can make SSC CS2.0 as another alternative farming place.

I also agree with everything in What I don’t want list except #3.

I think temporary events/content bring some excitement at the very least to the gw2 world. Although the rate at which they’re coming is pretty fast. Methinks they use these events as an instant-item/gold sink with the ridiculous recipes.

Or, you know, have a bunch of people actually wanting fun content. The entire MMO playerbase is heavily segmented as well. As I’ve said, there are those grinders, and those casuals, and those who do prefer fun content in and of itself. I don’t think the inclusion of farmers in this game is going to be enough to devolve gw2 into a “farm/grind fest”. There are still waaaaay more casuals or people into fun content than farmers (hint: look at the # of people crying about farming nerfs) such that GW2 will always try to make fun content rather than make a figurative treadmill for people to be on. Worse I need Dawn for Sunrise and when he got it he started laughing at me and sold it. I have 700 hours and I have never gotten an exotic and only get rares from the bonus chest. I have thrown in about 1,500 greatswords into the toilet and still have gotten nothing.

Your friend is a kitten :P

What you fail to realize is that some people get their “fun” from delayed gratification. Some people purposely delay their gratification because the enjoyment is much sweeter the longer the wait. This concept might be foreign to you, but it certainly is something not new, especially to game developers. So no, you’re wrong to assume that a particular playstyle is not “fun”.

Nope.

I understand your point. I simply believe you are wrong. I think that kind of reasoning is used everywhere as an excuse for accepting something bad instead of trying to do better.

Using real life as an example: you described “grinding” your job daily to be successful. I think that’s wrong. I believe people should have jobs they enjoy so the experience of working itself is good; I see a lot of teenagers who think that “working” means being a McDonalds employee and nothing more, usually in the context of someone who doesn’t bother to do better than that. But those who seek a career – the doctors, engineers, and so on – pick a career based on what they like to do, not on what they can make do.

Same with MMORPGs. “Sense of progression”, “delayed gratification”, “rewarding dedication” – those are all excuses. There is no acceptable reason for a game to not give a fun experience, with or without a reward later. Accepting flawed content just to get a reward later on is accepting mediocrity, which for the records is all the majority of MMOs has been for the last years.

I’m not saying those things as an excuse. Such that even if there was a magical MMO content that produced fun on all activities for all people, you’d still see a group of people grinding and farming it out. Why? Because they derive their fun from delayed gratification, and by that I mean that they will choose to ignore/skip even this “fun” content because that content isn’t as fun as them getting more money/loot than the playerbase.

I also disagree about “grinding” in your job to make ends meet, and that you should enjoy your job as much as possible. However, reality (for some unlucky ones) is quite different from that ideal. There are also quite a number of people who, despite hating their job, stick to it because of the big fat paycheck they receive at the end of each month (hint: look at the job conditions at Singapore, S. Korea and Japan).

However, inasmuch as I have my own personal stance regarding that matter, I have no claim or right whatsoever to berate or criticize them for their career choice. It is their choice if they want to “grind out” their jobs. In the same manner, neither you or I have any right to dictate how other players should play (so long as it’s within the rules and EULA of the game ofc). We can express our own opinion, of course. But we cannot force that OPINION on other people. Shall we berate RPers now because they’re not “enjoying content” and just spam random stuff in a secluded part of the map?

I say, try to keep it running for at least 5-10k votes. Translate this question into the various EU languages as well to get more respondents. With gw2 selling into the millions, 1k (heck even 10k) isn’t really a lot.
