Nah, some people want the game to fail because they don’t like the game and they’d like to be proven right (that their mindset is correct).

Because it is better. Grinding is a mix between a Skinner rat pressing its lever and a donkey being told where to go by having a carrot dangling in front of its face. Human beings should know better.

And what precisely is wrong with that? We encounter all of these operant conditioning techniques in everyday life. Want a good job? → “grind” out your schooling to get good grades. Want a raise? → “grind” out at doing your job. Is it the best form of attaining something? Maybe not. But that’s how the world works. Inasmuch as we would all love to be Socrates and enjoy the journey than the destination, that doesn’t always happen, and real life hardly rewards people for that.

It’s the real life equivalent of demanding to be paid in order to go to the movies, and then watching every single mediocre movie out there just to get paid.

The concept that they don’t intrude in your gameplay is a farce. Using the same example above, if people watched any movie in order to get paid, why bother trying to make a good movie if people would watch anything? It’s the same with grinding. Grinders, farmers, addicts and exploiters don’t care about fun content, they are going to grind anyway; so why would a MMORPG developer even bother with fun content, when it’s not needed to get millions of players in their games?

There are games made for grinders (see Korean MMOs), and games made for a different group of players. But realize that not all MMO players are grinders, and some people actually enjoy fun content. And even grinding itself is not bad. The point being is that while I admire GW2’s gusto in trying to capture a large market, in the end it’ll go back to still being a niche game.

With the main difference being that I am right and you are wrong. Farming and grinding (and exploiting, which is nearly the same thing) are not about having fun. They are about enduring content in order to receive the satisfaction of getting a reward in the end, more often than not by going through mediocre content.

Er… no. Your concept of “fun” relies heavily on the premise that it should be immediate gratification. You want “fun” stuff as you get it, while you do it. You want to have “fun” WHILE you’re doing activity X. So if activity X isn’t fun, the entire gameplay experience is no longer “fun”.

What you fail to realize is that some people get their “fun” from delayed gratification. Some people purposely delay their gratification because the enjoyment is much sweeter the longer the wait. This concept might be foreign to you, but it certainly is something not new, especially to game developers. So no, you’re wrong to assume that a particular playstyle is not “fun”.

MMO developers know about this. They don’t have to work to make their games fun (which is incredibly hard, considering how fun is subjective) since they know there is a large contingent of players who are addicted to grind and will do it as long as there is a big reward waiting for them. The result is what the MMORPG genre has been ever since it became popular – mediocre games swimming in cesspools of bad content with relatively large followings.

Except, you know, GW2, that tries its best to deliver fun content to attract and retain their playerbase. (and I’m pretty sure gw2 isn’t alone in trying out new things, new gimmicks and stuff, no longer relying on the traditional MMO framework)

These are the people who give farmers bad names. Some people think they own the game. They don’t. Do what you want. If they’re abusive, take screen shots and report them.

Those who are farmers wonder why people on these forums have trouble with them. While it’s true most farmers are nice and friendly and not like that, there is a small, visible, very annoying group of farmers who don’t care who’s game they ruin as long as they get their loot (or in this case achievement).

Woah, Vayne pulled a 180!

My $0.02 cents, but ANET needs to bring back the “old” Cursed Shore vents. Fact is people want a constant stream of enemies to fight, and that is why people would farm tunnel when the events chained off of each other. If people were farming normal events more, they wouldn’t be so desperate to camp the JP.

wait, how did he pull a 180? :p

I don’t really wonder, I know. Its because some people judge a group by the behavior of a minority within that group.

Not really. It’s because farmers make the game worse for everyone else.

Even ignoring the economic impact farmers have, the fact is that farmers allow MMO developers to make mediocre content that said developers know will sell. That’s because farmers don’t need fun content, they are happy playing mediocre content as long as they get a shiny reward in the end.

For everyone else, who would actually like to have a good game… Well, those players are told to find something else to play, MMOs are for grinders only. Until the grinders go find the next MMO to grind, leaving behind an empty game devoured by locusts.

I think most farmers are quite okay. They’re doing what they enjoy.

I wonder if a Skinner rat actually enjoys the action of pressing its little lever.

Actually, farmers and grinders are told to play another game other than GW2. With the amount of anti-farming DR/fixes placed in this game, you wonder what farmers are still doing here.

The Skinner rat does enjoy it, not the action but the fact that the action will yield a result – food. So what? How pretentious of you to presume that your way of fun is “better” or more justifiable than theirs. So long as they don’t intrude or impede another player’s gameplay (like those rude farmers above), they’re alright.

penatbater.4710

Not really sure what you’re expecting from this? Should “fun” just be handed to you? What’s “fun” to each player?

Yes, fun should be handed to you in a game. And second, that’s what I’m curious about. Is the gameplay fun alone or do the rewards make the most part.

The constraints are so biased, the result set is obviously going to be skewed to a particular portion of the player base.

Obviously a player values their time, so, once they’ve decided to play, they’re going to go to the type of play that they enjoy most; be it PvP, WvW, instances, story, etc.

This is true and intentional. If you choose your favorite activity your results will only reflect your preferences, not the experience. Of course you have fun doing your favorite thing.
It’s hard, almost impossible, to isolate the different aspects. This just seemed like the easiest way to do it to some extend.

Also I want to add, it’s in no way my intention to point fingers or in any other way
devaluate someones preferences or opinion.

So you want to know how “fun” the general playerbase finds exploring? Or how many find exploring fun? :| Seems like a bit tedious way to arrive at that. (also note that the people who read the forums <<<<<<< people who actually play the game).

Risk Vs Reward: Reward what Reward?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: penatbater.4710

penatbater.4710

Would people prefer the traditional loot-based system, where after enduring a really difficult boss fight, only 1 person gets the good item? The reason why in other games, bosses often drop rare items is that no matter how many people pounded on them, there is a limited amount of drops (and subsequently, people tend to be toxic to KS-ers). In gw2, since everybody has their own personal loot, anet obviously cannot hand out a rare each time they kill a champ, coz if so, imagine 50 people killing a champ, that’s instant +50 rares in the game. Items would devalue so fast currency wouldn’t be worth anything, WP costs and armor repairs are laughable, and it’ll mess up with the economy.

If you look at the issue on a personal/enclosed level, then yes, it really isn’t fair or tantamount. But if you look at this issue from different perspectives (i.e. game economy, gamer habits/trends, friendliness of the community, etc), then you understand why killing a champ MUST NOT always give you good loot.

WP fee replacement, New money sinks

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

penatbater.4710

Alternative: Free waypoint anywhere within a map (kinda like LA), but it costs 5s to WP to another map, regardless of distance. Makes map-centric exploring less taxing on costs while still maintaining a high-enough gold sink. Then, the game will reward you for walking instead of WP-ing. For example, if you physically travel two maps in a row, you get 2s ‘exploration reward’.

The only way WP fees hurt is if you use it frequently in a day. This way, WP can be seen more as an emergency “I have to go here asap!”.

I think a healthy and balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, along with some meat is gonna be the best for a health of any player. One should also sleep at appropriate times, and try to avoid vices as much as possible (smoking, excessive drinking, drugs, etc). Doing all of these should suffice in meeting the minimum health of a gw2 player.

Personally, I like what gw1 did with the whole white mantle/shining blade thing. [spoiler alert]

The fact that you helped the white mantle, only to realize that they were the bad guys all along, made you more emotionally invested and guilty as you knew that somehow you contributed to their cause. So the fight against them will be doubly important, not just to save the world, but to redeem yourself. I have forgotten about Stone Summits, Mursaats, even the Searing, but this piece of storyline stuck with me after how many years.

The problem with gw2’s story is that it does not give you the chance to be emotionally invested in your story/char/plot line. The most invested npc for me would be Tybalt (or your order partner). After that, once Trahearne takes over, it becomes less of a heroic story, and more of a military story (how will we get our troops to Orr, what tactic will we use, etc).

Some games that (for me) left a really lasting impression (and good storytelling) are Dragon age 1 (an argument could be made for 2) and the Mass Effect series (incidentally, made by the same company). Oh and the Final Fantasy 7/8/9.

Risk Vs Reward: Reward what Reward?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: penatbater.4710

penatbater.4710

First, there is no risk in the game.

This deserves to be quoted again. There is absolutely 0 risk of doing anything in this game. Whereas other games are much less forgiving. You die? You sorry, you’ll drop that +7 armor you have. Died again? -10% exp for you. I see you’re a new player. Here, go die repeatedly from people camping the spawn point. Oh not to mention, despite being a f2p, you still need to buy item X for real money to be competitive with other players. You also have to be toxic to that other player, he’s stealing your loot!

The highest penalty is only repair bills, and that can hardly be called ‘expensive’.

Maybe that’s why there’s very little reward, there’s also hardly any risk in the game.

I think one of the reasons they didn’t even bother to include aether weapons to us this patch is regardless of how it is acquired, someone and their grandmother will always find a reason to complain. For example:

1. Rng drops
complaint: being unfair to people, newb lvl 1 gets a ticket and I spent 1-3k hours on this game and I don’t get a ticket
2. BLC or RNG box
complaint: enough with the RNG!!
3. RNG box as lootable
complaint: Now we gotta beat RNG twice??
4. Buying through gems
complaint: Anet only cares for the players with money. Us with no money can’t afford to buy those skins, esp since gem conversion is so ridiculously high
5. Account-bound ticket linked to doing sky pirates achievements
complaint: Why only 1 ticket? Why no other chance to get it?? Anet hates us for making alts, how can I now get my 3 engineers their cannons and revolvers??
6. Making it drop like candy, like the cheap wintersday skins
complaint: they’re too common now, they don’t look nice, no exclusivity.

But picture this: You and a couple HC players are engaged in a tough battle. You’re on the edge of your seat as you dodge, maneuver, and use every skill at your disposal to survive. The battle is prolonged and one of your buddies gets trapped and downed in a mob. You face a choice. You know he’s put 10, 20, 30+ hours into his character. You can play it safe and retreat, or put your own avatar at risk to revive/rally him. You make a split-second decision and leap into the fray, disrupting your foes enough to buy the downed player some time. It’s enough for your party to kill an enemy and rally him. Everyone scrambles for safety, the rallied player breathes a deep sigh of relief, and you reassemble yourselves to finish off your weakened enemies. Which sounds more fun to you?

Or, you leap into the fray, pulling more mobs, realizing that you bit off more than you can chew, and both of you have to delete your char which you spent 30+ hours making. I think this one sounds more fun.

Its a picture of gems.
GW2 has a gem store.
The continued existence of GW2 is dependent solely on gem sales.
The primary reason for making some items soulbound is to force players into buying more than one, thereby increasing Anet’s profit.

That wasn’t so hard was it?

Yes, we need gems to get more of those dungeon tokens that my char used to wear because I want to give that armor to another char of mine.

New condi vs Improving old condi's?

I’m a little baffled.

Can anyone (preferably devs/mods) tell me why a new condition can exist in a game where current condi’s were claimed to be too excessive of bandwidth if it was changed/improved/given a cap increase/given a higher tick rate etc?
(I’m talking from a PvE standpoint in particular)

Now we’ve got a whole new condition.

Considering they needed to work on the base condi’s already in game and work on how they adapt for multiple players placing condis, I find it a little disappointing that the only way of improving that…was to add a whole new condition.

What you you lot think?

Maybe its easier to introduce new conditions (they did so with agony) than it is to give each player his own specific stack of condi.
