When I go on a Norn, I can zoom in and look all around, pretty much straight up in the air, with no problems. Try to do this on an Asura, and you get weird camera clipping and unsolicited zooming.

When I go on a Norn, I can zoom all the way out and look about 45 degrees up from flat land before it starts to clip and zoom in. Try to do this on an Asura, and you get clipping and unsolicited zooming if you look up even just a couple degrees higher than the flat ground.

These issues are really making it hard to enjoy the Asura race in the long term, even though culturally they are my favorite. Please fix these glaring camera control issues. The easiest solution would be to let me just nudge the camera up higher if I would rather have a usable camera than seeing my feet.

Am I the only one that’s noticed this? My main is an 80 asura thief, but I ended up deleting my second asura character and making it a norn instead just because I don’t want to deal with this for 80+ more levels.

I agree that the Asura camera desperately needs fixing.

I made a Human alt and as I was running around, I was able to see EVERYTHING around me. I didn’t realize what a difference there was until I went back on my Asura characters and noticed how low the camera is because of their height. It was so nice being able to look around and enjoy the environment without having to turn my camera at really obscure angles, and I’d like to be able to enjoy the scenery on my Asura characters as well.

Yeah I played WvW on many different races and asura is the only one that I have trouble with in terms of camera angle pivot being so low to the ground.

I think they need to introduce vertical camera offset in game, they already have it for horizontal

You are not alone. For all the beauty this game has to offer, the kitten up camera on the asura is really killing it for me. I want to make another asura but wont unless this issue is handled.

It would be nice if camera angle was based of a set point on all characters and not based on the characters height.

I have only played small characters so have not experienced anything close to what I would call a decent camera with GW2.

For now, I am using horizontal offset under camera options which feels kind of odd but it’s the only way i can play my asura on keep siege.

I hope ANet change this sometime soon but seeing as how they put in horizontal offset and not vertical offset.. I imagine they already know of this issue and decided to come up with less difficult solution.

I started rerolling same profession as human even though my asura has almost all exotic at 80 because of this issue, it doesn’t help the fact everyone on asura community is obsessed over aesthetic and not promoting thread that actually affect gameplay..

While it is lower, I would very much leave it there.

Why? Two reasons.

  1. It serves as a balance to our small frame. If not for our lower camera view, there’d be no reason not to be an Asura for PvP (Mesmers are an exception to this rule), seeing how it makes you more difficult to target. This way, our smaller frame is made up by our smaller camera height, which is an automatic balance. The tougher you are to click, the less you see.
  2. Speaking about seeing, this lower camera really drives home that your char is smaller. Just like the higher camera on a Norn makes you feel taller.

Hitbox and the camera is unrelated. I’m not sure you ever done 3d modelling. The camera can offset anywhere to the x, y, z coordinate.

People don’t click on target to target, we use TAB or auto target. So your point is irrelevant.

I agree. My camera hits the ground when I try to aim to hit someone on a keep or tower wall. Half of the time I can’t see anything above my character’s height because the camera is blocked by grass, hills, and other terrain/objects that the camera is too low to overlook.

I said “balance out”, not “results from”.

Also, I take it you only do sPvP? Try that tab-targetting in WvW, in fights of 20++ players, or just around a Norn Mesmer covering for a handful of Asura players. You might very quickly understand why being Asura is such a PvP benefit.
And if the camera “issue” was resolved, then this benefit would stand without a balancing drawback. And hence, Asura would be the go-to PvP race (this discussion came up plenty in beta, we’re not the first here :P ).

Also, you ignored #2.
The low pivot point is what makes Asura feel small when playing them. And Norn feel tall. Since it would be entirely unfair to not also fix Norn (their camera tend to clip into the ceiling in tunnels), would you deprive both races of their size-based feel? I mean, the specific problem mentioned in this thread is a clipping issue, and is unrelated to pivot height.

I definitely agree there’s something weird going on with the Asura camera, probably due to it’s height placement, as noted above. God help you if you have to follow some action going on directly above you while in downed state.

I’ll agree with you about the Asura ‘feel’, but I think that’s trumped by usability issues. And arguing that this helps pvp balance…? I think there are better ways to achieve that then disrupting the immersion of someone’s UI.

All we need is vertical camera offset just like horizontal camera offset in game, no need to argue about ‘feel’ of your races, I can smell your RP all the way here

I hope official would respond to this thread and let us know if this was intentional for balance or unforeseen side effect of shorter/taller race

Well it seems to me the actual issue is less with the pivot height – which should be lower, since your head is actually lower – but more with clipping problems.

An issue Norns share, if in the opposite direction and in tunnels.

Considering just how many player-clipping-issues there are – on top of the camera ones – this seems to be a general issue, not one specific to the asura camera. Fixing it by increasing the pivot height would be curing the symptoms, not the illness.

Perhaps. I see it as a combination of several issues, so it would be curing one of the pack. It needs several changes, but a camera height slider is definitely one I’d like to see. In any case, It would be nice if we could get some sort of official response on this issue.

I agree, the camera is not right. To me it feels that it is about a third to low off the ground and in some places its impossible to see due to clipping etc.

A camera height slider would actually be pretty cool, provided it is scaled by racial height. I.e. the highest Asura setting is on par or lower than the lowest Norn setting.

One thing I noticed which is important as far as “feel” goes is that as an Asura I sometimes genuinely cannot look over certain obstacles.
Which is fine with me. In turn I am less easily clicked in a standoff, so size has downsides and benefits.

Has anyone noticed that sometimes it DOES offset the camera, making your character lower on the screen? It may do it during combat, but I’ve only really noticed it a few times.

All the functionality is there, we just need a slider.

My first two characters were humans. Recently, I tried an Asura and there definitely seems to be something wrong with the camera. I notice it mostly when standing on a slope (with the terrain rising behind you). While panning around with the camera, it is extremely easy to causes it to zoom in (VERY tightly) on the Asura character. The head of your character fills most of the screen, making it difficult to see the game world. If you do this with a Human character, the camera zooms in but not to the same degree (allowing you to still see the game world clearly).

Frankly, I’m afraid to spend much time leveling an Asura because I’m afraid the camera might drive me crazy eventually.

Because the camera pivot point (the head) is so low to the ground it severely restricts your forward vision and you have almost no upward vision whatsoever; lot of events involving dragons the NPCs are like “look at the skies!” and I’m like “ALL I CAN SEE IS MY HEAD!”

it’s a shame because they made this lovely game world but I can’t see most of it xD

I have a problem with the camera too but mainly in WvW. I’m an Ele and when I need to burn down oil or cannons, or suppress wall activity, I have to tilt the camera up of course. However, when I do, I rarely have a clean view to my target. Instead I have my head, blades of grass or spell effects from other players in my way.

Don’t get me started on the insta-zoom-in/out when moving around tight areas like stairs or hallways.

If we had first person view, we could at least switch to that view and I think it would remedy the problem.

Please ArenaNet, fix this clipping issue!

-testVerticalFoV doesn’t do anything, any more, they integrated it into the main build and is on at all times. It had nothing (much) to do with camera, it was mostly to do with the fact that the game assumed 4:3 aspect ratio for monitors and set *F*ield *o*f *V*iew accordingly, clipping on the sides and stretching to fit your monitor.

I have this problem, too, and occasionally it’s annoying. If there are reasons not to fix it, then please give us a way to zoom the camera all the way in, to first person view, because yes, unless I’m standing on a tiny platform or something, I can’t look up more than about 30 or 45 degrees.
