Short and vague answer: Brain food.

Well… what’s known is that they have sharp teeth, so they probably had a primarily meat-based diet.

They were previously deep subterranean with connections to dwarves and dredge, but given the existing relationships, I think it’s safe to say that they were at least tolerant of both, so eating them’s out of the question. (At least, routinely…)

Destroyers are out, since they weren’t really around.

What do we have in the surface subterranean pockets? Spiders, large lizards, fungi… maybe lakes in some of the caverns for fish.

No idea about progeny though… female Asura have a distinct lack of breasts, and I believe the only nipples encountered so far are on male Asura, so there might be a kind of seahorse deal going on here…

Sharp teeth don’t nessecarily indicate meat eatting. There’s some critters with sharp rasping teeth similar to asura’s that use them from shearing algae and lichen off rocky surfaces.

Given they are of subterranean origin this limits diet to other subterranean creatures, lichens and fungi though, so it is most likely they are carnivorous or omnivorous. The only thing we know for certain is modern asura can process oozes into food which are a subterranean species themselves…

At any rate modern Asura have long since mastered processed food :p

Right; I totally forgot about lichens and oozes. That might give a bit of explanation as to their size as well: very limited nutritional resources. (Or, I guess the other easy answer is: Caves are small.)

Oozes are an interesting idea. They might have been cultivated to break down specific types of rocks and minerals into more usable forms. Probably wouldn’t’ve been used as a primary diet though; don’t need much in the way of teeth to eat them. Alternatively, deep oozes might have a tougher exterior, so they had to be punctured before sucking out the goodness. Also might make for good baby/geriatic foods too. (Assuming any managed to survive all the failed lab experiments to an age where that’d be a concern…)

Piranah have similar teeth and use them primarily to break nuts and seed shells. Asuran may use them for bug carapaces as well.

Bug carapaces like… wurm husks! Weren’t carapaces even used for armor and housing at some point in GW1? Those guys are probably deep underground…

Not sure. i didn’t play GW after Nightfall. But it would make sense. There’s got to be a whole other world under ground if the dwarves, skritt and asuran were thriving.

Their teeth look like lizard teeth, so I’d kinda figures it was insects. The ooze idea is interesting, it would explain all the research on them.

This wouldn’t answer any questions of what their “original” cuisine was like, but there are asura food vendors in the game, particularly in LA, that sell various types of experimental foods. They all seem to be one type of goop or slime or another.

I have two theories:

1. AN removed the nipples from female Asura to avoid a political correctness backlash (lol).
2. The removal was intentional and indicates that male Asura breastfeed rather than females.

Personally, I like #2 better. It’s just a more humorous image.

Maybe they are like cats and other mammals.

That is their mammary glands are more than 2… and they are on the belly not the upper chest!

Between the male Asura appearance gallery and the female pit fighter armor (both of which give a clear view of the abdomen and MOST of the chest), there’s no sign of, well, anything anywhere.

I remember reading one unofficial comment suggesting that #1 is the cause [‘Asura look too much like children’…] but I’m still holding out for some kind of lore that makes sense. (Double checked the art— evidently what I thought were male glands was just shading or skin markings or something… pity.)

Considering their size, their rapid movements (watch how energetic an Asura looks while running, jumping and otherwise moving around), and their greater than normal intelligence, Asura probably eat quite an astounding amount of food. All of that activity requires a LOT of energy. (It sounds contradictory, but the larger a creature is, the less it typically needs to eat as a proportion of its body mass. A creature like a mouse needs to eat almost its own body weight in food every day!)

As such, it wouldn’t surprise me if Asura needed to eat as much (if not more) than an average human per day. The only food sources with that abundance underground would have been fungi and insects/worms. Since coming to the surface, however, I imagine Asura would have branched out and adopted a more varied diet. There’s one Asuran NPC in Rata Sum who talks about moving to Lion’s Arch and opening a bakery, for instance.

There is also a floating farm in Metrica Province that is growing potatoes

There is a Grocery list in Oola’s lab. Mentions milk and eggs – but not Krait Eggs.

Asuran cuisine consists of 3 things;
1. High nutrient content
2. High ratio of calories to size
3. Must taste tolerable; bring along Asuran magic sauce.

And with that set aside, Asura will eat practically anything. Including other races(if they could)

Well, my Asura is learning cooking and the recepies do not really differ from normal “human” food. And the NPC-teacher in Rata Sum did not mention that this kind of dishes are some “foreign” cuisine. So at least now they seem to have adapted to above-ground human-style food pretty well.

But I don’t know much about traditional Asuran kitchen.

If I recall my lore correctly, dwarves and Asura were trading partners.

After The Great Destroyer showed up, and Primordius started showing action, the dwarves underwent a rite that basically turned them all into animated stone so they could engage in perpetual warfare against him.
