I’m just curious as to why people chose their genders on their Asura.

I’m making a new elementalist and now I’m debating if I should make another female (who is a ranger) or make ’em a male one.

I’m more concerned about the voice acting, since I would prefer to have my little asura friend sound awesome as s/he/(it?) blows them up into smithereens with dragon tooth. I’m currently leaning towards getting a male one, but I like female asuras too and most of my characters are female. (Save for a male Sylvari mesmer… Because Plant Men are awesome.)

No, don’t tell me to get a sex change later, because that’ll result me in changing his/her/(its?) name as well. (Plus moneh is an issue.)

There is no difference in gender except for a few dialogues, cultural T3 chestpiece (and it’s interaction with shoulders), character features (in your customization on creation), and very specific town clothing (witchs outfit, the latest in shirts and winter outfit).

I haven’t really dabbled in males too much, but the female voice, I found to be just right.

I’m quite aware of that. I can’t seem to decide if a female voice would be so irratating for me or not. .

I ended up hating my female sylvari because of her voice. =<

Try making one and just running around for a bit. You can also just listen to the intro cinematic to make sure you’re okay with it.

Female asura and male asura have a slightly different selection of ears and hairstyles – though both sets have their charms. And obviously the facial options vary quite considerably. Asides from that male and female asura share animations and clothing options in the majority of cases.

The female voice set tends to be a little catty and hostile (“You’re dumb, you’re gonna die and leave a dumb corpse!”) whereas the male asura voiceset epitomises the whole smart-and-knows-it schtick (“I have you beaten, you just don’t know it yet!”), overall I tend to prefer the male voice set, but nonetheless I main a female asura simply because I wanted to make them look ridiculously cute and male characters look odd in pink ;p

I prefer female Asura, partly because I’m female myself and just prefer playing female chars in general, but also because to me, they’re cuter

And I really love the voice acting. I’m glad they didn’t choose an extremely baby-like high pitched voice, but a cute-but-also-mature-and-sophisticated sounding one. Though I guess my ultimate dream would have been to be able to choose between 3 voices for each character, ranging from high and young-sounding to low and mature sounding. But I’m not gonna complain about not having this, the amount of voice acting would have been INSANE ^^

About your choice: I actually have a female Asura Ele, and she says adorable things when she changes attunements. You’re gonna hear those shouts a lot when you play an ele ^^ so here’s the things that female, and then male, Asura Eles shout when they switch attunements. Maybe it helps in your decision. (Maybe when reading the words, you’ll remember how it sounds from hearing it in the game from another ele.)

Female:

“The water’s rage!”

Air:
“Let the storms rage!”

I find the male ones to be more snarky and funny, but I prefer the way the female ones sound.

Also, there’s of course the other sound tidbids that have nothing to do with attunement. Here’s a mix of some that I remember and that I found online, for each gender.

“I’m hemorrhaging!” (Bleed)
“High toxicity!” (Poisoned)

I’ve got three, two males, one female. I like them both for their own charms. Ryuujin captured the spirit perfectly on the things they said. I’ve mainly played the two males but that’s more due to the classes I chose than the character. Elementalist is hard for me to get started.

All of my characters across every video game are male, because when I make a character I like to consider them as an extension of myself, and I am male.

As a side note, I also prefer the voice/attitude of the male asura. Female asura come off as overly cold and heartless to me.

Male asura voice > female asura voice. He’s just so kitten funny/tongue-in-cheek, yet manages to be serious at the same time. Female voice has a more serious/straightforward tone.

My main is female purely because it wasn’t my first character.
I only play asura – my first character was a male thief. Shortly into levelling him I made a female mesmer (current main). Eventually thief got boring so I deleted him, focusing on the mesmer. I’ve recreated the male now as an ele, but only to get some Vigil armour pieces, otherwise he’s inactive.

So yeah that’s the only reason my character is a female mesmer.
I do have a makeover kit I got from a black lion chest, but I quite like this character as she is now!

I made my Asura a male, because I like his voice set slightly better than the female one. It’s the perfect blend of wit (“Such synergy!”) and snarkiness (“And now… to destroy you!”).

However, the general sound effects made by female Asura are a lot cuter than the male versions.

Male Asura Elementalists have the best attune sayings. My personal favorite being “Now they’ll feel my turbulence!”, but really all of them are really fun and unique. The females’ sound more generic and less Asura-specific.

But female Asura have the single best line in the game period when entering combat. “You’re dumb, you’ll die and you’ll leave a dumb corpse”. Sometimes I wish I had a female Asura just for that one line.

If I were in your situation I’d go with male. You’ve already got a female, so having a male would make your new Elementalist a bit more unique.

I made mine female b/c I wanted the tiniest possible character model. Voice acting is ok, it doesn’t annoy me at all, which was my only concern. Can’t speak to whether you’ll actually enjoy it or not though, that’s pretty much in the eye of the beholder.

If you haven’t rolled a male yet, just try it and see if you like some of the lines. If not, just delete and roll a female.

A lot of the non-profession lines you’ve heard on the female already. It may be refreshing to hear new lines after a while.
