Jester – Hand of Blood [HoB]
Piken Square
Greetings Geniuses
First of all i know there are multiple topics similar to mine, and i checked them all out but couldn’t get myself a satisfying answer (which is rather strange since our IQ’s are all 4 digit ones)
So down to business, after a Guardian Asura and Necro Asura, i thought it about time to make myself a medium armored Asura. Now engineer is in my opinion not an option for obvious reasons, so i am considering both thief and ranger.
Now i would like to hear your opinion on both professions, both as a profession and linked with our (most superior) race, Asura. I plan on playing mostly PvE and dungeons, with some guildrelated WvW, but no PvP at all.
Thanks up front!
Oh and if anyone has a pic of an Asura Ranger with a Wolf as pet (the one from WvW) i would really like to see that, since that would be the pet i would go for. I would like to see the height ratio between the two though
I personally went Thief. Hello, corporate espionage! Although, an Asura with pets bigger than they are could be rather entertaining …
Haha, like roleplaying then? I know right, that’s why i would like to see how a wolf looks next to an Asura. I would love it if he was like about the same hight
Thief! Sometimes I regret I did not roll my thief an Asura. It is an awesome class where you have to dodge a lot and the Asura dodge animation is the coolest in the game.
Having that said I did consider an Asura ranger who would go and study the Sylvari. But I am probably not the ranger type.
People say that thieves in dungeons are weak, but they usually do not know what they are talking about or have never played thief themselves and only seen bad ones. Thief is not the most straightforward class to play and one mistake will probably mean death. If it happens a lot this can of course be an annoyance to your teammates in PvE and lots of people mistake that for the class itself being weak when it is often a question of those playing the class who could use some more practice.
A thief can bring quite a lot to a dungeon. Shadow refuge can save others from death, you can resurrect people safely or you can use it as a combofield to gain life stealing etc.
In CoF part 1 and in CoE thieves can be very handy as well. You can just use shadowstep to get past the boulders and the security system fairly easily.
All in all it is a very fun class to play and my favorite by far. I also find it very satisfying to steal from warriors and return the 100blades. Ironically most of them don’t know how to dodge it.

I thought people would say its OP in dungeons not UP. When I get my usual group to do CM we usually try and get a thief in and use shadow refuge to bypass mobs we cant be bothered to fight. I personally only got a thief to lvl15 or so before I got bored (not particularly my playstyle) and made a warrior instead.
Nope, there are a lot of posts stating that thieves are weak in PvE. But as I said, as it is a slightly more difficult class to play (does not mean that you do not find very good guardian or warrior players) some people mistake that for the class being weak as they encounter people who do not fully master their class. But let’s face it. It’s not rocket science either to play a thief. You just need to stay mobile and know your evading skills.
Shadow refuge is great for bypassing mobs as you say.
I almost quit my thief around lvl 15-20 and rerolled a guardian. It was the toughest levels and I really struggled. After lvl 30 it started getting more fun.
Well i decided to make both and get them both to let’s say 30? and then decide what to do with them.
I know thieves aren’t up, especially not in wvw, or pve, but then again, it all depends on your build and playstyle. I certainly am not the guy who will say “and that class sucks and that one too…” because i play a necro too, and boy do i love that one haha
So thanks or your opinions, the only reason i would still go ranger would be if the wvw fun outweighs basically everything but i doubt that. Although i must say that the wolf looks amazingly epic next to my Asura
Thanks again!
Personally I go thief because Asura get Radiation Field. This synergizes very well with the Shortbow because you can spam blast finishers for VERY long duration weakness on foes!
I have both an 80 Asura thief and ranger. Personally, I would definitely recommend ranger. Thief is a very squishy and selfish class. While it may be capable of some massive burst, it doesn’t do much to help the party. Stealth is not nearly as helpful as Healing Spring, which removes conditions off of your group and can easily fully heal the entire party when combined with blast finishers. Rangers may not have burst, but they have strong sustained DPS and fantastic support/utility to offer.
Here is a picture of my ranger next to a wolf.
I recommend against Ranger. It’s in dire need of fixes. Yes, our big, wavy sword was buffed a bit, but quite a few other problems lie unaddressed and shielded by legions of ultrapros that claim anyone who isn’t performing their feats is a bad and should quit trying to get Anet’s attention.
Thief is weak at times but it has many diverging paths you can choose, all viable in their own ways and situations. In other words, how ranger should be but is not. Thief is also capable of being insanely OP in WvWvW, if you’re looking for that.
Greetings Geniuses…Now engineer is in my opinion not an option for obvious reasons…
Not obvious to me. I tried all 3 professions and Engi is the one I like the most, has the most versatility, and isn’t boring to play. However, if it’s truly not an option (inconceivable!)…
I say Ranger. Seeing a tiny Asura flipping around constantly is fun for a while, but you can’t see tiny daggers on tiny Asura. Now a mini Ranger with a big bear pet just seems awesome.
