The Asura Almost Made GW2 a Sci-Fi Game
This game doesn’t feel futuristic in the least bit. I perceive the asura as more magical and mysterious than sci-fi, though I do respect them as a technologically advanced race. People need to stop clinging to the typical Tolkien fantasy formula. Technology is not taboo in a fantasy setting and asura tech is heavily reliant on magic in the first place. If anything, asura tech reminds me of that movie Castle in the Sky and that didn’t really feel sci-fi despite the presence of technology.

I get more of a steampunk vibe, though I don’t pretend to know all the nuances of that movement.

A better example of steampunk would be the Charr. Asura are far closer to the magitek genre.
While it is magitech, sometimes Rata Sum does feel more Advanced then some scifi settings like Star Trek or Star Wars :P
I just love the SF mixture, and the magic side of the Asuras.
Diversity is a good thing, not a bad thing.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

I try to stay away from anything norn related, I like the higher fantasy/tech elements of the asura/charr (and to a lesser extent sylvari/human)
Without asura tech i’d have left this game long ago :p
