I like new Scarlet's voice
I don’t like it at all, I prefer the joker-kind of voice. The new voice doesn’t make her seem mad at all :’(
Characters: Ester Daemond – 80 – Thief
Lyssa Daemond – 50 – Elementalist

Huh well, I haven’t read all the journals yet but from what I can see, she has been having nightmares and slowly lost her mind…I don’t think a “teeheee die die die die” high pitched voice we’ve heard before would fit that…
It’s a good change. The instant you hear her serious voice she seems 100% more menacing as a villain.
I like the new voice too.
It will make more sense by the end of the season.
Because her Ceara personality is reasserting itself/narating, I imagine.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

i liked the journal, and i liked how she sounded during the marionette event, buuuuut… sorry, the direction you went with the voice during the journal reading was really out of place, and kind of over the top.
I getting tired of all these:
“Just wait until the end”
“all will be revealed soon”
“it’ll all make sense in the final chapter”
it’s like some cheesy who-done-it novel we have to wait until the final few pages when the detective pieces all the clues together. I thought this was a high fantasy story.

Guild Wars was never high fantasy to begin with. It is a much more down-to-earth world, with lots more tech then your usual random world filled with magical elves and whatever else.
And I thought that piecing together bits of story is exactly the interactive content the LS needed
Think of her as the Sylvari equivalent of Harley Quinn… You’ll appreciate madness soon enough chuckle

just because there is tech doesn’t mean its not high fantasy. I count the Final fantasy series as ‘high fantasy’ and that has a lot of tech in it.
This game has magic, gods, floating castles, dragons – believe it or not Gw2 is high fantasy. Its the current storyline filled with social drama and political nonsense that is giving it this a low fantasy tone.
Wouldn’t the journal be her “old voice”? It was written before we first met Scarlet. The way she sounds in the rest of her appearances is her after whatever damage was done to her by the thing she writes about in her journal.
It will make more sense by the end of the season.
Personally, I don´t care if it has some meaning or not (but since it has a meaning, it´s a big plus ). I´m just glad she doesn´t sound that childish anymore. That was really my one and only problem (well, the biggest problem at least). Now she sounds more like a villain with plan, a threat, not just some random person that is there because we need some chaos happening.
I´m really looking forward to FINALLY find out what was actually happening for the past year

Scarlet clearly wrote her journey when she still went by her sylvari name, Ceara. This is what she sounded like before she “saw the Eternal Alchemy” and went mad.
I love listening to Ceara’s voice and, if they had introduced this sooner, I would’ve loved Scarlet more as a tragic character.

Actually she also sounds like that in the new marionette event, when her hologram appears. Whatever the reason for a change, lore-wise or they simply changed it because people (including myself) hated the old voice it’s great.

It’s tied to lore and the current story.

We have to piece it together, there’s almost nothing to go on. Everything’s going to be revealed at the end. So why don’t we just skip to the last chapter, and read the wrap up?

That’s not really true. There’s a lot of information in the game, but it’s been spread across multiple releases. If anything, the theorycrafting on Scarlet that I’ve seen on these forums and on Reddit are fantastic. We’re lucky to have a really smart fanbase that is connecting the dots. That’s not to say everyone is right—there’s probably one accurate guess out of a thousand. We want to get people talking and guessing.
But to answer your question, if you’d rather be told the details, they will be revealed by the end of the season. I can’t say when or how. This is a spoiler-free zone.

i cant wait! where’s the spoiler zone?
I’m simply explaining why I’m right.

You just made my day.
I guess my point was, people are guessing because you’ve withheld 90% of the information in this living story till the end. I don’t want to be told the details, I want the details to come out during the course of the story, rather than in a big info dump at the end. Might you tell us what you feel we’ve learned from the living story thus far? From what I can tell, all we’ve learned is that Scarlet can make people form alliances, and she has some sort of plan, and it involves a tree and a dragon.
For instance, why did she want Queen Jenna? I assume that’ll be revealed at the end.
Why did she want Mai Trin to replace the assassinated captain in lion’s arch? Revealed at the end. How did she get the xenophobic Krait to team up with the insular nightmare court? Revealed at the end. Where did the Marionette come from? Revealed at the end. What was the point of molton alliance invading ascalon and shiverpeaks? Revealed at the end. Where do the aetherblades come from? Revealed at the end.
You can reveal parts of the mystery without spoiling it. Stories should solve mysteries as you go along, not withhold them all to the end. Maybe some of them have been, and I might’ve missed it, but I feel like I’ve been following the Living story for the past year, and I don’t feel like I know anything.

Totally understood. It’s something that I think we’re getting better at as time goes on, but I agree that we were slow to connect the dots earlier in the season. One thing that we learned was that there are players who do appreciate story instances and character moments, and that we need to work harder to get them in the game so that people can better understand the story and care about the characters. We unfortunately let a few of them slip through the cracks and as a result it’s made the story appear fragmented.

I’d like to add “Caithe’s secret” to this.
I had actually been considering making a thread about the “unanswered” questions in the LS, and hoping we can check them off as they are answered. I’m enjoying the idea of the LS, I can see how Anet was trying to go about telling their story, and I’m hoping nothing slips through the cracks. These are all things I am very much wondering too.
I made a thread a while back about the karka invasion, if there was ever really an answer to that, since I don’t think we ever got one “officially” (was asking anyone in the thread if they knew and maybe I just missed it, “a dragon” was about the best I got, and I don’t even know if that was completely true or just accepted.) I mean heck, this was before the LS almost a year and a half ago. Maybe it was just Zhaitan, and that was that, but I’m still curious.

“One out of ten thousand” was also mentioned publicly… Thing is, having a sub-one-percent success rate actually points to not connecting to your audience very effectively. More than 99% of your active and engaged audience just don’t get it.

The reason why there’s 1 guess out of a thousand is because there’s almost nothing to go on. We have no data points to connect, so we’re just making stuff up. That’s not really what I think you guys want.

Disclosure: 1/10,000 is hyperbole.
But I get where folks are coming from, and this feedback has been noted. I think we can drop more hints along the way without spoiling too much in the future.

I actually considered setting up some sort of search pattern that discarded any theory put forward in more that 8 posts .

My own experiences with unfolding storylines as both a table-top GM and a professional writer are that while it can be a little disappointing to have your secrets ferreted out more quickly than you expected, you can always console yourself with the knowledge that you’ve been communicating with your audience successfully – they followed the breadcrumb trail diligently and eagerly . And ultimately their fun in discovery is more important than your own in fooling them.
I’ve said harsh things about the early part of the Scarlet arc and I stand by them as being true of that time. But the last 2-3 episodes have shown dramatic growth. The recaps have be entertaining and well delivered. Scarlet has become more compelling and more frightening. I feel more involved in the story from within the game rather than chasing after supplementary texts. I am genuinely hopeful that the climax will achieve something we talk about with fond remembrance in years to come. I do want to be able to tell my friends, “It had a rough start, but look how far they’ve come.”

A lot of people still just want her gone, but it has been more fun for me, and apparently a bunch of others as well, to try to piece together what it is she’s trying to do. Now that we have the means to do that, there’s more to talk about.
Nobody ever saw this coming, but the two-week gap between releases is also just right for allowing the sleuthing to progress about as much as it can without dragging on forever. I figure ANet just needed some time to figure out how to deliver well at that cadence.
So there is hope this the beginning of things getting better.

It will make more sense by the end of the season.
I am just wondering. Am I the only one thinking:
“I. do. not. want. a. big. story. blob. somewhere. in. the. future.”
I want a comprehensive, creative, thrilling, ongoing story.
You know, a real story. Not just some fragments and at the end you will have to explain everything because ultimately no one understood what happened or why it happened.
Just my opinion though. The new story instance in Lion’s Arch has been the best one of the Living Story. These five minutes were more appealing to me than 3/4 of the Personal Story and the rest of Living Story.
The personal story of humans is quite intriguing too, up to level 20 btw. (You know, before all of the mindless zombies swoop the whole thing).

Thanks for the feedback. I’m hoping that people will notice a difference in the 2014 LW releases.
You know what I’d want to know – if anything has either been retconned, if there any red herrings or loose ends.
There’s nothing that puts me off more than having some loose, retcon or herring to throw you off base.
For example, I’m expecting to see how this entire storyline ties into the Steam creatures because the portals Scarlet uses are the exact same ones seen with the Steam creatures.

Just an example of something that could’ve been revealed during the course of the story, and not left till the end.
I actually noticed Scarlet’s way of talking had changed during the Marionette fights, her holograms sounds less teehee than the original scarlet did. I’ve just listened to the journal (only acquired it yesterday but I wanted to save it for a good time to listen to it) and indeed, she talks quite different from how she usually sounds. I like it.
Hearing Scarlets new voice sytle reminded me of the borg, this got me thinking. Our characters exist on only one world – Whiteside Ridge for example – but npcs and others exist on every world. As the mists link those worlds together, you could gather all the Scarlets from those worlds into one place within the mists. Each Scarlet sharing information on how that world fared.
Scarlet’s “New” (Old?) voice is hot. Yes, Scarlet. I honestly can’t believe I’m saying this, but Scarlet’s voice is sexy. The Ring of Fire Islands are freezing over!!!!!!!
Seriously though, nice to see ANET listened to feedback. “New” Scarlet is a lot more compelling than the old Kefka-done-wrong mess.

I’ve seen some pretty good guesses here and on Reddit.
My guess is Bobby got his wife to do the new voice parts, which scored him many brownie points with ANet for saving money and wife-points by getting his wife to be a star.

Well judging by the hints we’ve received so far, that probably means that a lot of the popular theories are wrong. Which means we should probably look into the more obscure ones.

No, it’s the same voice actress, just using a less energetic tone and inflection.

Correct. The change in tone matches up with a sequence of events.
Not that I’d expect you to tell us, but I guess it’s got to do with her losing her true self and becoming fully controlled by…whatever is controlling her.
I think that “Feral Scarlet” is a personality that emerged to protect herself from the evil seed in the back of her head that was accidentally triggered by going into Omadd’s box. It’s all her rebellious tendencies dialed up to 11, relentlessly trying to throw off that influence.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

So, did we get an explanation as to why her voice changed as you said we would? I think I missed that detail while I was doing the final instance :P

I liked the speculation about his wife more
I hope Tara Strong will do more voicework for GW2 in the future
Kudos to the actress her English accent is really well done! I like the new Scarlet voice as well during the battle with the Hologram.
