Running around the world of Tyria there is no denying that GW2 is an awesome looking game.
- It’s sound, however, or more like the music needs some tweaking yet still.
True, people have been provided the ability to choose their own playlist, but does that mean that the rest of us is stuck with their current misplaced tunes?
One thing that I notice in particular is the track called “Eye of the Storm” from GW1 playing around Kryta. That is fair enough. It is OK. It was composed to fit the environment in which the Human race chose to live.
- Sometimes, however, I hear a very characteristic tune, which in GW1 was exclusive to the Asurans. It would play in the areas that they called home, and it is very fitting… to THEM. Running around Kryta I hear this tune, and I thought to myself: “What is that doing here?”
- Some of you might be like “Oh, it doesn’t matter.” but I can tell you that “Oh yes, it matters so much more than you could possibly comprehend.”
- GW2 has a YouTube channel with all 118 tracks. They are numbered, and what I can conclude from the comments is “Where does this tune play in the game?”
- I have played WoW. I’m still checking out their sound designs and their music, and they do have a very talented sound design team.
If you’ve played WoW you might notice that you can remember which track played where. If, say, I wanted to find the music playing in Nagrand, I can very easily find it. I just enter “Nagrand Music” and there it is.
- I cannot do this in GW2, since all their tunes don’t characterize one certain area/zone or whatever you call it.
I also heard “The Door of Komalie” in Ascalon, as I was playing on my charr.
- ANet? Save that piece for the Ring of Fire islands!
I hope you realize how important these iconic tunes are. It is what your players will remember. It is what they will hear and then go “Oh, I remember this one. It played in the Ring of Fire islands. Man, I feel like playing again.”
- Music is the primary source of nostalgia, when it comes to games and movies. I kid you not.
Looking at the “Elwynn Forest music” or “Durotar Music” comments, you’ll find people going “Man, I miss playing WoW.” and such.
You need to restrain certain tunes to certain areas. The music is there to enhance our experience. It is supposed to be storytelling, and believe me, you have awesome music that only needs to be put into their right environment.
- I had also hoped that Orr would’ve had its own theme, but you threw in the Echovald Forest music there.
- I know that Jeremy Soule also composed some of the music for Mists of Pandaria, but if you can heave him out from Blizzard HQ and ask him for tune that is unique to Orr that would indeed be great.
- I hope you take this into account. I like the game, it does a lot of things differently, and I definitely think it’s taking us to some new and exciting places when it comes to gameplay, but it lacks some of these little things that actually make a big difference. Music is one thing that your players will most likely be constantly listening to.
- Music is part of making the world come alive to the player, and since you are striving for a living and breathing world I hope we’ll see some changes to your soundtracks in game (Making them change as we enter caves and such might not be a bad idea either. Always enhance the mood. Always).
