It’s a bit of a silly question, but it’s been bugging me for some time:

Do you folks actually pronounce “Claw Island” like Trahearne does? Ever since i did the personal story involving that place, i’ve been writing it in guild chat as “Clawr Island” (the ‘r’ is deliberate).

Please don’t thrash me. Inquiring mind just seeks to know.

I know in the NE of the united states, a lot of people (usually from the Boston area) have a pronunciation like that. Words that end in a “soft a” sound get an R at the end. eg) Idear, Cubar, etc…

The thing about Britain is that there are a lot (I mean hundreds) of different accents and pronounciations. I can drive 10 minutes down the motorway and go into a town full of people that have a different accent than mine.

So yes, that is how some British people would pronounce claw but there are also a large amount who wouldn’t.

Yes, it’s a thing, and it’s probably most common in certain British accents. The phenomenon is often referred to as the “intrusive r.” http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=128897

Watch “Man vs Wild” as Bear Grylls treks through the inhospitable wilds of “Alarbama.”

“Premade”
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I am English, and I pronounce it Clorr.

Then again, you Americans cannot spell or say Aluminium correctly, and I cringe when you say Jargwarr to pronounce Jaguar. It is Jag-you-are :p

Something to note: most english people pronounce ‘r’ in words as if it were an ‘h’. They do not vocalise the ‘r’ in ‘turn’ for example For me (Northern Irish, not harshly-accented) the vowel in ‘Claw’ is pronounced the same as in ‘draw’, ‘fawn’, ‘John’, ‘spawn’ etc.

So you pronounce John as “Jorn”? How odd.
