Go Zerker or Go Home
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.
It’s simple really, you don’t need defense, because you get two dodges.
Dangerous mobs will take you out in one or two hits. You don’t need defense if you can kill them quick enough, since you can just dodge their attacks.
and furthermore, you don’t need defense, because you ONLY get two dodges.
After you’ve dodged twice, you’re all out. If you went zerker then odds are the mob will soon be dead, if it isn’t already. If you went tank, you’re doomed.
No matter what class you play 2 or 3 big hits and you’re done. So if you can live through one hit as a zerker, and two hits as a tank, and going tank means doubling the time it takes to kill something, you’ve made a huge mistake.
Even worse are the people that go cleric, since they never live long enough to heal… so what is the point of having good healing?
The new Living Story area just reinforces all of this.
My high dps characters kill mobs one or two at a time, and have to be very careful. My tank classes don’t stand a chance. The thorn wolves are a perfect example of kill them fast, or you’re dead.
So if you are new to GW2, just buy zerker and get used to dodging, because now more than ever the only defense is high offense.
This has been true for about a year and a half.

I’m going to disagree on advice for new players or for new content. And for non-PvE game modes (you did post this in the profession balance forum, after all). Having some extra survivability can help a great deal.
‘Go zerk or go home’ applies to known static PvE dungeon encounters where the big ‘challenges’ are bosses that hit really hard (so defense is less useful) and there are no surprises because its the same mechanics every time.
[edit: protip for advice giving, especially to new players: explain what you are giving advice for (e.g. pve, dungeons, etc) instead of tossing out a bunch of unqualified statements]

what big hits are we talking about?
I had more fun playing in silverwastes with my full cleric elementalist throwing ice bows at allies as well as constantly healing them for 2-3k with regeneration . and not to mention condi clenses.
not saying a party or a zerk needs to be full of those kinds of builds but it does seem to have a effect.
and ofc, in other aspects of the game that require me to wear zerk gear i go zerk gear
I thought you were being a man and talking about WvW but soon realized it was PvE

You must never have looked into transferring to BG before.
Its true, bosses and mobs have mechanics that they cant use because they die too fast. Its easy to kill them. They are design in the wrong way.
Don’t like the so-called berserker meta? I have a guide to help you.
The guide is funny, but not practical. What actually happens now is the first moment you point out in party chat that you’re not stacking/skipping, you get kicked from the group you yourself started, and go back to waiting around for the next 4 randoms to join the group then kick you for not playing the “right” way.
I myself play all PvE (and most of WvW) as pure zerker. If I want to do anything other than that, the only real way to do it is to have guildies/friends join you.
Taking away the whole “opener owns the instance” and allowing anyone to be kicked and not closing the dungeon has killed non-zerk dungeoning for me.
This is true. I have this amazing heal guard with heal on dodge, heal on weapon swap. Stack heal points on kill. Runes of the trooper. Heal burst with might stack. I can heal bot and condi clear my party all day. So amazing….. Or it would be….
Except none of that matters because my whole party will wipe in 1 hit anyway. Or 2 hits if tank. Can’t heal through death. Also I notice i actually make my team wipe even more when I run this character because we can’t kill the boss fast enough due to my lack of DPS. So then they instagib and ofc I can’t heal through instagib.

Lies and/or exaggerations.
Wow what a great thread! From this new information i traded in full nomads gear on all my characters for zerker and my dungeon runs are so much faster. And with all the free time i saved i was able to get a part time job, move out of my moms basement, cure ebola, and learn how to play yyz!
If only someone had pointed out this amazing idea sooner, but better late than never, right?

idc who gives me the money be it the original fella who popped off at the mouth, you, or some fella from BG
fact remains i call all talk zero action
I love the people that think this is old news… it’s not.
While zerker builds have been accepted as the norm in PVE dungeons, in Living Story and open world pve your spec never really mattered.
Now it does, and not only is beserker gear better than anything else, some of the other gear stats are laughably bad.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.
Is it wrong of me to have pvt asc set on my thief then? Am I doing something wrong?!
break. I feel like they should be back by now..”
In the newer instances, I found a condi build to be pretty effective on some of the bosses compared to a dps power set.

Well you don’t need PVT as a thief… for living story you just need to perma blind and use auto attack and you’ll easily get all achivement.
