This is not a whine post, only observation. The ranger is an extremely viable class but only when using conditon.

problems

1.The power coefficient for all ranger skills being so low as seen in this chart. to put this into perspective a warior’s auto attack power coeficient in mele is from .6 on sword to .9 on hammer. the other skills power

2. Rampage As One is simply lackluster in comparison to the warior’s Signet of Rage.

3. One cannot reliably dodge while using the sword auto attack. This doesn’t allow the ranger to dodge at critical times like when an eviscerate is coming.

analysis: The power ranger is and always has been complicated due to the extra damage pets give. However the ranger power spec does less than 40% damage of a GS warrior. Investing in the pet trait line will simply make this number lower for the ranger.

Possible Solutions:

1. a 0.1 increase to ranged weapons and 0.2 increase to power coefficient. This will actually give the ranger some reason to go into power while not upsetting all the balance in the game. the ranger would then do 60% of a Warior’s damage and could hit up to 1500 on critical auto attacks from GS.

2. half the cooldown of rampage as one and make it a shout so it can possibly have a 45 second cooldown like signet of range (shout makes sence because it affects pet mostly, like “sic’ em”). lower the stability and might on hit duration 10 seconds. this would allow for a closer balance of fury and swiftness.

3. The bug has to do with the leap ability just make it not a leap and the chain not root the ranger.

closing thoughts I hope you guys like these ideas/observations if there’s anything else you think could make Power Ranger a viable PvP or PvE spec feel free to say so here.

I think the power ranger is viable now but it’s a very high risk – very high reward prof.
A 30/30/x/x/x ranger can burst down anybody from 1500 range in a few seconds doing 3000-4000 autoattack crits… on characters running 3000+ armour. The oneshot-miracle triple signet Mauler ranger can land TWO five digit crit while invulnerable. (Fluffball can link you some videos or screenshots)

Buffing this higher up would make the ranger OP.

The upcoming patch going to make the Power Ranger more versatile (Poison Master, Sigil of Intelligence, etc…) so keep hoping

Those crits you mention aren’t common. 2k is common. To get 3-5k we’re talking about popping trinkets, 25 might stacks, vulnerability on the target, food, bloodlust etc.

On 3k Armor 3-4k would be too high but on my 2k armor mesmer i always get hit for 3k+ by power lb rangers on full range.

Viable in terms of GW2 profession balance is being able to have a similar DPS/healing/“whatever subject is discussed” to another class. the limit I am setting as my subject matter is the Warrior, this is because warrior DPS is regarded as one of the best and Warrior is the most played class in GW2.

full zerk in PvP you get 1 k crits on GS and Sword on warior you get 2k with GS. Might actually makes this difference greater because of the power coefficient being greater.

The point of all this was to prove that Going into Power for all ranger weapons but longbow is a waste of time. here is my final data. (all from PvP)

with 0 power a ranger auto attack using GS is about 300 on a critical hit.
with 0 power a warrior auto attack using GS is about 400 on a critical hit.
with 923 power a ranger auto attack using GS is about 650 on a critical hit.
with 923 power a warrior auto attack using GS is about 950 on a critical hit.

the 100 damage difference became tripled when the power was added to the build. This means for ever stat ranger put into power the warrior will deal 3 times more damage. People who believe power ranger is good believe it because the base damage of Longbow is fairly high (about 550 damage with 0 power) but in reality other than the ranger power stat is worthless for all PvP purposes since most fights happen mid-close range.

I have a (old) spreadsheet calculating Longbow AA and Maul crits. I don’t want to re-enter every values so I use my old ones, OK?

Attack: 2191
+crit damage: +49%
Armour: 3000
Buffs: Signet of the Wild, Signet of the Hunt, 5 stacks of might, Food: 100 power and 70 precision.
Average crit on Bow AA: 2760 ( 3730 with +100% crit damage modifier)
Average Maul crit: 4899 (6330 with +100% crit damage modifier)

As I said it’s old. I’m sure every power ranger has more attack and more +crit damage.

EDIT: I’m not saying Power Ranger is OP or such. What this build needs is diversity. With the upcoming patch we can make a less glassy build with 30/10/0/30/0 or whatever. Extra sigil is an added bonus a typical power ranger needs since the LB the GS and the SB are two handed weapons. But the sheer buffing of the LB and GS would make the class almost OP.
Little tweaks are welcome like faster Barrage channel or better scaling of the GS auto.

I’m not going to say you made a whine post (your words, not mine), but The problem with the Ranger is that you cannot examine only the Ranger in a vacuum. You also have to look at pets and add them to the equation. You have to look at the Ranger class like this : You are effectively controlling 2 characters at the same time.

It is more than possible to zerk out a Ranger, and fully buff the pet to where the both of you will be dealing 1-1.5k in PvE/WvW on your sword/greatsword auto attack, depending on how exactly you build yourself and your pet.

Because of the easy access to vulnerability through Opening strikes, and the easy access to pet Might through the Companion’s might trait, you should be able to easily deal as much damage as any Warrior or Thief.

All I’m saying is that, even if you are one of those Rangers who would rather not have to deal with the Pet because its worthless or buggy…..The pet is included in all of Anet’s balance considerations when it comes to Ranger, and when you are making a suggestion to change the Ranger’s Damage, you also have to consider the pet, just like the developers are.

The formula is quite simple.

(Weapon Damage * Skill coefficient) / (Armor * (1 + Vulnerability) == % of Power

So basically for longbow attack #1:

( 1050 * .9 ) / 2600 *( 1 + 0 ) == 36.35%

36.35% of your power is how much your weapon will attack for assuming 2600 armor (like the wiki) and 0 vulnerability stacks. You can then modify this accordingly based off your traits, might stacks, signet use, etc. Just remember that you have 50% more crit than what is displayed until tomorrow.

power ranger will be for sure not worth running after patch… because the weapon skills don’t work smoth enough.
for example if you have a thief hard melee on you, it happens really much time that the longbow skills interrupt themself, just because the thief run throw your body
or its really hard to hit the longsword daze, because you can’t move when using this skill.

so i think its more important to look on the power based weapon skills like
longbow and longsword and make them work better, instead of just increase damage again.
this should be done by combinate two skills to one skill and add a new survive based skill.
if anet want the ranger to be the sustain and damage over time profession they should do that and i heared something like this in a state of the game with battosai allready, but its not happen since a half year now…

here a example how i think longsword and longbow could work better, i posted it already in the ranger cdi,
but i really think this weopons should work something like this.

longbow:

skill1: always same decent dmg
skill2: 3 fast arrows, with full damage of the old skill 2 in this 3 arrows, if attack out of stealth more damage, if attack out of stealth from behind more damge + daze
skill3: combinate it with skill 4, so knock and stealth and swiftness for the ranger
skill4: new skill: press first time huge dodge backwards, press again go in stealth and blind narly enemys with blindfield (animation is throw a smoke granade on rangers position) cooldown should be not to huge on this skill
skill5: you can run when cast barrage, it fires 5 arrows with decent dmg, 1 arrow to your target and 4 arrows to nearly enemys. the target get cripled.
if you do this skill in stealth the target get root.
this skill should have a not to huge cooldown, so a ranger can deal also aoe damage

longsword:

skill1: increased attack speed
skill2: still maul, but a bit faster and blast
skill3: new skill: step sideward (dodge) and attack with decent dmg + cripple
lower cooldown, maybe if press again throw your sword and chill
skill4: block like now arrows and melee, if block melee it knocks the enemy down with a faster animation then yet and decent dmg. if you press the skill twice then you do the skill swoop like it is now in the game but with cripple if it hits in front. if it hits behind it knocks the enemy.
skill5: step sideward (dodge) and daze, so its like the old skill but with dodge. but it needs more range to use it effective when you whant interrupt enemeys

this is just how i feel this weapons should work when i try to run them in 1vs1 or 5vs5 situations, so maybe its not what most peoples want see for wvw or pve.
but i still think anet need to combinate two skills to one and create a new survive based skill on this weapons.

@chrispy
nearly all rangers should know already that they have to work with the pet.
im pretty sure most players do this, it’s nothing speacial or hard to know in my mind.
for sure in pvp it works better then in pve or wvw because they dont die there in a big aoe zerg or from boss enemys where i really understand why this makes players mad.

It’s ok in PvE dungeon.

Outiside of that, Power Ranger is misconception, flawed child of game mechanics and will be NEVER really viable unless Devs decide to make fundamental changes in the whole game.
So never.

I’ve killed people in less than 5 seconds with power ranger. They just happened to also be power rangers typically =P. Though I’ve killed all classes so far with it, but tbh why bother when the other classes do it better? But here’s a story for what its worth

I was running a fun little ambush power build for a while: glass, gs/sw.axe. Pop signet of hunt to start, take kitty. Kitty goes rawr, send kitty to attack, take different path than kitty. Kitty opening hits 3.3k, I pop my signet of the wild right before kitty hits. They expect me to be behind kitty, messes way too many people up to be honest. Run up behind and scream I AM THE BEAR! Maul for 6k-7.5k. Hilt bash, weapon swap, signet of hunt pop path of scars 3.5k, aa sword ~1k damage per hit and cripple, path of scar hits again 2.5, interrupts. Kitty is hitting the whole time. Their heal is caught in the interrupts usually.

If a solid stun break/immunity prevents this, its all about pushing the player behind the class to make the mistake of trying to heal for the initial burst. The longer the fight goes on, the less damage I do, trying to get a maul/hunt signet combo off to force their heals. I have had days in which I destroyed person after person, even in 1vx situations. Other days I get nothing.

Those are some neat changes for both LB and GS. A combination of survivability and steady damage boosts. Cool:D. These would make the weapons and power rangers themselves, interesting to play in pvp again without being overpowered (Maul may have to adjusted).

GS definitely needs buffs. I think the issue with the sword autoattack is that because it’s comprised of leaps, you can’t really “fix” it; for example a warrior can’t interrupt his sword #2 leap. So they could either remove the leaps to make it interruptible or keep the leaps and it will stay uninterruptible. The number of rangers who want one or the other will be primarily based on their build and utilities. Rangers who use sword offensively with ‘protect me’ and/or signet of stone will want the leaps. They can pop their 6/12 seconds of immunity and go ham. Rangers who use it defensively will want it interupitble so that they can actually autoattack everyone once in a while to put some pressure on and still dodge important attacks.

In the early stages of the game, power ranger was one of my favorite specs. The raven used to be able to hit for about 8k (each attack of their f2 skill hitting for around 4k to 5k just with signet of the hunt) and maul could hit for the same amount of damage as a backstab on a thief would. Five measly points into beastmastery line netted you a virtually on-demand 100% attack speed buff that could be used with numerous skills (barrage being a particularly useful skill with it, each barrage-on-crack hitting for about 1.1k). Jaguars did an average of 4 to 5k perma crits per hit at the touch of a button.

Now, since patch re-works (mainly to pet damage), we don’t see these types of numbers anymore. It was a direct response to the beastmaster build which was virtually unkillable, but let your pet do all the damage – notably the jaguar.
