[PvX] Elementalist scepter air burst
I was way too serious in last post for my style so I’ll quote world carebearing guild member from TS other night. “Every time someone gets bursted by ele scepter air burst someone dies from ebola and isis member gets recruited.”
Actually, you’re a bit off.
Yes, part of the damage comes from Lightning Strike, but Blinding Flash does NOT do damage at all, it’s used for a quick Blind ( as it is instant. )
The other part of the damage comes from Air Attunement’s 15pts ( or 3 ) minor skill Electric Discharge. Everytime you swap to Air Attunement, you proc a Lightning Strike on your target.
Not that it wouldn’t be funny having to do a move when going into Air Attunement, but I really don’t see what you can do

Yep, scepter/focus ele burst is pretty OP and I love it. They better not change it.
I love the fact that I can almost insta down most people with the burst. They can’t even see it coming and there’s zero chance of dodging it.
It’s a pretty strong setup for the amount of damage I can do. If for whatever reason I’m getting overwhelmed by my dead target’s buddies, I can just pop mist form > obsidian flesh > lightning flash > fiery greatsword and no one can touch me. I actually prefer using my zerker ele over my thief because I am guaranteed to escape and not a single thing can be done due to obsidian flesh.
Huge reward and zero risk.
^-this guy.
Anyway, like i said, fresh air (6 in air) is ok, lack of animation isn’t. And that goes for every lack of animation in game that’s bragging about animation based gameplay.

try to touch the ele, with touch i literally mean it, they die instantly
thats why i barely ever see scepter eles in tournaments, d/d is way more forgiving, way more flexible, etc

Air Attunement should a projectile strike like Staff Air 1 and Lightning strike should be given the Longbow 5 treatment.

I perfectly agree.
It should get the same animation of a stealthed thief.
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
Instant skill has no cast bar. This is nothing to do with ele, is it?
S/f ele needs a substantial buff. The players you see wrecking you are much better than you, but bored with the cheese.
After the patch so many (all?) other classes can do high burst so much more viably in spvp…

This is a slight concern I have as well… A lot of power builds, or power sustain builds, are going to become part of the game now, and with S/F staying the way it is, it is likely going to be outclassed rather soon…
Still, seeing is believing… Power Rangers spamming their longbow, while you have Magnetic Wave up is bound to result in hilarious outcomes

the quickest way to fix s/f is to put at least a 1/2 second cast time on obsidian flesh and call it a day. instant burst is one thing but having an uncounterable ultimate defense skill better than anything else in the game is definitely the main reason s/f can be considered op. instead of the cast time one could also just let it work the same way as endure pain. anything works as long as it does not make the player completely immune to all incoming effects.

LOL obsidian flesh has a 50 sec cd, on an offhand that basically removes a lot of your burst (no fire grab, so there goes all of your aoe burst).
Can’t believe the amount of pathetic idiocy I’m reading on this thread.
I mean, backstab is kittening invisible it’s not like you can reliably dodge that either, and most classes don’t even have enough vigor to afford to dodge the constant warrior hammer stunlock.
The difference between scepter ele and a thief is the scepter ele has huge cooldowns to do the burst a thief can do way more often.
Good for you, you can escape with fiery greatsword, every 180 seconds. The thief can escape whenever he can lay down a blackpowder and heartseek through it, about every 8 seconds.
The thief can steal boons, whereas the ele cannot.
More importantly, ele scepter autoattack SUCKS. It’s not just bad, it’s pretty terrible. An air scepter channel, supposedly the scepter’s strongest autoattack, still does less DPS total in its 3 second channel than an instant thief mainhand sword autoattack. And thief mainhand sword autoattack isn’t even the strongest ingame, warriors take the cake for ridiculous autoattack damage.
So if you nerf lightning strike to not be instant, you need to raise scepter autoattack by a metric ton to make up for the utter lack of sustained damage.
A scepter ele misses his burst (of which there’s more than lightning strike, you need arcane missile to land as well, and landing a fire grab is even worse), and he’s out of commission for about 30 seconds until his skills recharge. The thief and warrior both can burst as often as every 12 seconds.
And let’s not mention the fact that an ele to do reliable burst, needs to go glass at about 13k hp or less, without 6+ second immunity stances to chain together or a metric ton of cc like a warrior or the defense of stealth.
And this is burst, that unlike a warrior’s kittened earthshaker or whirlwind or 100b/new arcing slice only hits 1 target, while thief and warrior can do aoe damage on their bows while the ele is stuck with a weapon that has virtually no viable AoE besides phoenix (if you mention dragon’s tooth, the most easily dodged skill ever, I will slap you).
Instant skill has no cast bar. This is nothing to do with ele, is it?
This was my understanding, too. The skills are instant cast (quite out of necessity, see the AA), so obviously they have no cast to recognize. Duh.
Here’s the problem with pretty much any fixes to those skills though:
1) With cast times on those skills, you would literally be unable to autoattack in air for fear of being locked into it for a full three seconds.
2) Attunements can’t have cast times, at all, or elementalists will instantly become unviable.
3) There are maybe three good focus skills out of the eight. Two of them are in earth. Unless something is done to improve focus overall, nerfing the earth skills would literally take it out of the game, even ignoring how obscenely high their cooldowns are already for weapon skills (you can talk about alacrity traits however much you want, the fact of the matter is that you just aren’t supposed to use them).
4) Scepter burst can remove one person from a fight every 40 seconds, or can do an inferior job to the thief of being an executioner in teamfights (Thieves have much better sticking potential than especially s/f, have stealth for stomping, and are mobile enough to stay alive for long enough to take out several worn-down opponents who would be trying to escape or recuperate, while S/F is slow, has one teleport on a 40 second cooldown, and one invulnerability, which doesn’t really lend itself to chasing down multiple weakened enemies).
this burst combo is the cheese arena net tossed us about a year ago and the lemmings rejoiced. . . you do realize that if you use your arrow keys and your keyboard the elementalist will most likely get screwed up and die?.. or were you also running an elementalist, because otherwise i don’t see this scenario being as drastic as you portray it
so i guess you came to conclusion invisible burst is fine and actually should be “substantially” buffed
this is good, we’re getting some mayor progress here.
The difference between scepter ele and a thief is the scepter ele has huge cooldowns to do the burst a thief can do way more often.
Air attunement switch lightning strike, lightning strike, fire sigil, air sigil every 5 seconds HURTS a lot.
I perfectly agree.
It should get the same animation of a stealthed thief.
2/4 stealth attacks do have an animation, the other 2 are incredibly obvious and just require awareness of your surroundings.
If you get caught off guard from a stealth attack (didn’t see a thief enter the fray) well that’s kind of what thief is there to do. They don’t have any other options atm.
break. I feel like they should be back by now..”
This is a L2P issue. S/F ele is so squishy with what16k hp max, and thats giving up more damage and less than 2k toughness. Its high risk, hi reward, very skill based. Its post like these that just kills the game.
Let me guess, you want more cheese builds? I can see you losing to ele with a cheese build and instantly head to forums and complain. Maybe we should give ele’s more AI? Or even give ele the ability to go invis and call it wind. Seriously though, more cast time…. way to try and kill a class that probably has the highest learning curve right next to engi. Just leave them alone and L2P

I’d agree on the first 2, but not the 3rd. It’s really not all that skillful to press 1-3 and the occasional gale + dragon’s tooth. It isn’t brain dead but its not skillful either.

doing that against ppl who dont know how it works ye, like op
I’m just dropping in to say focus is a perfectly powerful weapon. It fails with one skill, and even that skill (the line of fire) has a purpose.
Focus doesn’t need any changes, but it does need some cooldown reductions.
Honeslty, I wouldn’t mind counter play to the instant invulnerability, too.

If you get hit by gale and dragons tooth, then its an L2P issue. Dragon tooth is probably the longest animation next to churning earth. I mean if you don’t see a big red thing about to fall on you and can’t react in that amount of time, then I have no comment. So many things you can do to counter it, block, blind, invuln, dodge, teleport out… I mean get creative with it.
In terms of being skillful, it requires more skill to play an ele than most of the classes. There’s just not a lot of passive builds you can play with ele that will help the noobs. So lets not dumb the class down more. Thats why I dislike people complaining about stuff like, this or ice bow, LMAO. Its whatever, some people are good at gaming and some aren’t, just surprised how much Anet has dumb down this game since launch. The cheese is so strong nowadays…..
I dont get the hate on obsidian flesh, its just a different version of endure pain (which still lets wars contest points for whatever reason). A cast time wouldnt make it useless but i dont see why it should have one when most invuln skills are instant.
Hating on all the instant cast abilities i understand, but this game has never been 100% about animations. If you want to make it so youd have to overhaul eles, and make a lot of changes to thieves, guards, engies, in fact basically everyone but warriors.
Just be glad youre being hit by a class you can see instead of an 8k backstab out of thin air

Im not saying that they should nerf fresh air builds but I made a long pause, almost a year, made an ele for PvP and the only build that I could handle after such a long pause was fresh air.

I agree, keep in mind they don’t have nearly as much HP and toughness like the warrior. I don’t see why people complain about it.

I understand but to increase the cast times is essentially a nerf. The fact that it has insta cast is probably the only chance they have against thief’s. Even with insta cast, thief’s can still drop ele’s pretty quickly. I’m just using the thief as an example.
watering it down eh?
who said anything about fire skills? i didnt, they are perfectly animated. (kinda too perfect when compared to everything else)
who said anything about focus skills? i didnt, they got descent animation.
actually where did i said anything about builds? l2p or read your self all you want
all i said, LS (i know about switching to air is part of burst) should have decent animation (at least not the same as BS fs..) because current counter play is throwing random dodge rolls and praying.
and please dont balance this game around thief. this got us nowhere in 2 years.

After this comment, I realize how troll this thread is. No longer worth my 2 copper, have a good day.

I didn’t say the combo was op, I’m saying the rotation is pretty straightforward and therefore not very skillful. You use swirling winds during projectiles, obsidian flesh to avoid burst or wait out a cooldown to recover, magnetic wave against projectiles or for a little condi cleanse, etc.
Getting hit by dragons tooth is entirely a L2P issue I agree, however gale isn’t a projectile or some obvious particle effect incoming, its a swing of the arms and a knockdown at your location from a distance. Dragon’s tooth can be avoided all day but gale is much more tricky to do so which is why the cooldown is rather long.

gale is a long cast w the caster putting hands in front for 0.5 s, its easy to avoid
u may say ‘its not easy to see coz ele has so many skills’
well u see what the ele is attuned as, and just watch animations..
We apologize if you can not react fast enough and dodge lightning.
