Ranger sword
You know you can select a keybind with which you can make an instant u-turn?
If you play ranger, you need hat keybind.
Full melee Ranger since August 2012
This is the first time I’ve seen a thread about ranger sword that isn’t complaining about the auto attack. I’m shocked. But yeah as Kibazuka said, you can hotkey a 180 degree turn buttong, but on top of them always wait a second before using the second part of monarch’s leap and give yourself time to look in the direction you want to leap.
It is not what you do, but how and why you do it that counts.
Just take it as a sign that the community is accepting the sword to be a battle not worth the effort of arguing for, after all ANet did admit that it is not working with the basic game systems, but as for a fix…. No one is holding their breathe on that.
The 180* keybind only affects the camera, not the character, unless they changed it recently. Otherwise you still drop back. I’ve just gotten used to flicking my mouse at the right point to flip my character 180* in an instant. It shouldn’t take 1 second (see one of my videos for reference. I do it multiple times without messing up).
There is a bind for camera look back, but there is also a bind to turn your character 180 degrees.. mine is bound to c
Jumping with #2 just takes practice to get smooth. I find the mouse much preferable to the 180 button, since that often doesnt work for me. Once you get muscle memory with mouse its second nature to rotate 180 (or where-ever), jump, start running in the direction again, then jump again. I find it best to run a bit in between to make sure you do your second jump in the right direction as a habit, never goes wrong this way.
Sword#3 is great in pve, puts you right behind the target… but yea in pvp it is too complex a movement and often does not work right at all. I’d suggest anet change this to a teleport ala shadowstep if i had a chance. Or just make it a charge type movement.

Only thing sword #2 needs is evasion from the moment you press #2 ‘til the moment you land 400 units back. Not the current “Stab your foe, then evade backward”.
Other than that, it’s fine, I like it very much for jumping around all over the place (could use a bit more damage ofc, but so could most other ranger skills…)

I leveled a Ranger briefly to unlock the Hints.
I used a Sword.
Oh my god it was terrible. I almost understand why Rangers hog their Bows in PvE. It is the single most clunky, annoying and unresponsive weapon I have ever seen.
3 on sword does not connect about 1/10 tries. #2 leap is alright except that the leap direction should be reversed ( good for combo fields with traps). #1 will kill you often if you don’t turn off auto.
Despite the problems with sword, it’s still light-years better than GS.
Sword is great and i love it but its not perfect and i feel these changes would make it better.
- sword #1 Should be leap finisher (20%)
- sword #2 The retreat should activate faster since the wind up is to long and be a full 600 range and be a leap. Also there should be a timer similar to larcenous strike so you know how long you have to use it.
- sword#3 needs better tracking similar to how they upgraded flanking strike/traited stalkers strike
- sword #1 Should be leap finisher (20%)

I you were lucky enought, you could heal from 0 to max when fighting inside a Healing Spring just autoatacking. I’d say that’s a little bit OP.

And if you aren’t paying attention enough to the ranger who is stabbing you with their sword to actually stand IN the healing spring and allow him to get the finisher…I say you deserve to die and he deserves the healing. Just because something could be OP in 1 situation doesn’t make it always OP in ALL situations.

That’s true in PVP and WvW, but not in PvE.
A group with 3 rangers using sword and healing spring would be nearly unkillable, and all they would have to do is activate autoattack and alternate the activation of the healing spring.
All that said, I’d love to have a leap finisher on auto because it would sinergize with traps very nicely. But I still think it could be OP in some situations.
