So I was bored today so I wrote a little analogy of GW2’s professions and their relationship with their parents: Anet

WARNING: don’t read unless you have a sense of humor, cynical sarcasm is the point of this post.

The Warriors and Guardians are Anet’s favored sons, and receive all the shiny new toys, milk, cookies, and attention from Anet. They get top marks in every area of school for all their skills- much loved by everyone-that Anet has given them.

The thieves and engineers are the more independent and self reliant children of Anet. They do well in most areas of school that they care about, but not as well as Anet’s favorite sons. These independent children are notable for bullying and taunting the other, lesser member’s of Anet’s children, but that is because they’re a bit insecure about how great they are in all areas of life.

Elementalists are the distant cousins that for the longest time Anet didn’t care about, but Anet has reconnected with theses distant cousins over the past year and reverted a lot of the bad insults towards them, while giving them new toys to play around with!

Mesmers, Necromancers, and Rangers are the illegitmate, unwanted, red headed step children of Anet, that sleep in a filthy cabinet underneath the stairs. They are continually abused and beaten down and neglected by their forced “caretaker”. They may only do well in one subject at school that is their favorite, but fail miserably in all other subjects. Mesmers keep losing their favorite toys to Anet, and the rest of the family only bear to be around the mesmer every once in a while for 2 seconds of “utility” (ie doing the chores the other children don’t want to do). Mesmers also have a lot of bugs on them, but Anet won’t let them see a doctor to cure their bad bugs, but only kill the fun and useful bugs living inside the Mesmer! Rangers have their trusty pet they found on the street to keep them company and make them feel better, but the rest of Anet’s children are needlessly mean towards the ranger’s pet so it can’t do anything. Necromancers once recieved a great toy from Anet, but the rest of the family got jealous and convinced Anet to make the toy much less useful, similar to what Anet did to the Mesmer’s toys (theirs was too glamorous for the other children to appreciate). The rest of the family also gangs up on the Necromancer and focus fires it before it can do anything except hide in its shroud of tears.

Except that Guardians are more like Mogwai – they have been cute from birth and everyone wants one in their family, but Anet are afraid to feed them any milk and cookies since beta incase they turn into Gremlins and eat everyone.

Actually, the necromancer has suffered far worse than you think. The ANet parents broke several of the necromancers other toys in an effort to make the other children feel more loved, then ANet later broke the necromancers greater toy so the other children would stop complaining about how awesome that toy was, but then never bothered to go back and fix the other toys that ANet had broken, leaving the necromancer with less toys than what they had to start with.

So sad.

Stuff goes here.

I loved that movie when I was younger and it first came out. I saw it recently and it looked so bad after all this time………………………..I wonder how many posters are of age enough to even get the reference?

Mesmers are the illegitimate, unwanted, red-headed step-children of Anet?

Really?

Mesmers are the lovechild of Guild Wars and Arenanet in the same way Adventurers were of Funcom in Anarchy Online. (for those that remember).

I think this post sums them up best:

Mesmer
“The darling of Guild Wars 2 continues to remain pivotal to the effectiveness of parties and content. Veil, Portal, Time Warp and Feedback are four skills guilds and individuals don’t want to live without while their scepter and its reflective trait is capable of destroying others in WvW. There really isn’t much to build on when it comes to the mesmer as although they lack physical mobility (they have very few movement swiftness skills) they make up for this in every single department. So much so and if you’re thinking of making a profession you really should look no further.”

Thanks.

Guardians are not the beloved ones; in fact, we’re one of the stagnant ones that get the occasional nerf because “we’re in a good place” and Anet thinks that condition guardians/boonbots are the way to go. The only reason why this class receives favor is because it wasn’t terribly designed to begin with.

Necros are sorta like what was described. And rangers are usually told they’re adopted.

I think the mesmer community in general would disagree with you, like do you even play one?

And that quote, where is it even from? The scepter has a reflective trait? Since when?
And while those skills can be great skills (for some of them thats debatable) they’re literally the only thing that mesmers really can do (and guardian can outdo that utility as far as PvE is concerned. Take away veil, and no guild group would ever run a mesmer in GvGs, since thief outdoes it on a gank squad.

Mesmers are literally nerfed so many times in almost every balance patch. Sword/Focus is the most nerfed weaponset in the game and it feels like a shadow of its former effectiveness.

And as for the people saying that guardians aren’t buffed that much, yeah thats true, but you guys don’t need it because you aren’t constantly nerfed and can still be used in top tier content in any game mode.

Whoops. My bad. That quote is from March, but from March 2013 (which I did not see at the time).

-1 to me…

No, I don’t play a Mesmer. My wife does. I just found it hard to believe that it would be considered kitten lowly by Arenanet. The Mesmer was always the flagship class of Guild Wars and was one of the only unique classes brought over from the original game (unlike the Dervish and Ritualist).

My wife has never complained of any nerfs to her Mesmer, but she loves the class so much she probably would just deal with them as long as she got to play it.

My quote though was a year out of date, so my apologies on that one.

Thanks.

The devs of GW1 (and i guess even the original class devs of this game) have long gone and been replaces by people without any clue what they are doing.

Seeing a dev playing 5 signet warrior tells everything, really.

I get your point, but that mesmer part isn’t accurate. Because everyone around me LOVE mesmer in every mode: wvw, pve, spvp, you name it. Mesmers have veil, feed back, time warp and portal, which provide great team support and they do very decent damage. and they just bug class in spvp (especially to new players).

and to rangers and necros? no they just no relationship to anet. when my guildies run dungeons, they just simply kick necros and rangers as long as they see the class icons pop in the screen. and many others did in LFG too. why? because these two classes are most hated and useless in many players’ mind. when you player this game as rangers and necros, you have to learn how to endure people’s insult to these classes. And I hardly see anyone complaining mesmers being bad.

You have proof of your claim about the devs, or is this simply uninformed claims?

Because a dev plays in game testing a signet build to see how it can be improved, you claim that makes them an uninformed dev? To me, to claim that seems extremely uninformed.

And I hardly see anyone complaining mesmers being bad.

Remember over a year ago when people speed ran cof p1 with 4 warriors and 1 mesmer for farming?

Well since that time the community has woken up about the mesmer while ANet has nerfed several things about it like every sword focus skill.

And most speed runs don’t take mesmer, as time warp messes up rotations and good players don’t need portal and a guardian can do all the reflects for them.

And for wvw you get very little benefit from bringing more than 2 mesmers top. So while others that don’t play mesmer may still think the class is okay, most of the players playing it would surely disagree with them.

Pretty much that, reason only shouts and meditation build works mostly even the defensive blue domes and WoR are easy countered and spirit weapon are a joke as “cannon fodder” skills.

1st April joke, when gw2 receives a “balance” update.
