Q:

I think it would help the community to understand, in order to provide the community with a better understanding, what the logic behind the trait lines is. This will give us the ability to provide much more useful feedback in the Collaborative Development Initiative.

It appears, from my non-developer perspective, that the traits for all classes are randomly distributed around the lines, without rhyme nor reason.

Could someone please illustrate a train of thought behind some of these lines, as in most cases they don’t seem to synergise in any way whatsoever?

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

A:

for instance: why s engi incendiary power in the trait line with power stat? condi proc with power stat. is it by design, to create tradeoff?

It’s not at all about the stats.
It’s how traits work together. But granted, this is broken on most classes.

I can see two viable ways to sort traits:

  • All traits of a certain type in a single line. Say, all Virtue-traits, all Mantra-traits, etc. This has the upside of not making it possible to take all traits for a type of skill, but has the downside that the community will be quick to figure out which 3 to always pick because they’re better.
  • All traits of a certain concept in a single line. Say, -cooldown traits are all in one line. The upside is that all lines are useful independent of specific setup chosen, the downside is that only 2-3 traits per line are even useful to you.
The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

Bueller?

Seriously? Nobody can offer an explanation of the trait system?

i dont really understand what you want to know. Do you mean the stat distributions of the trait lines or the traits themselves?

The best example, how traits should work is probably the warrior, because here they all fit very well. Other classes don’t follow this rules or are not well designed here.

Basically minor traits are designed to boost each other within one line:
Strength: damage with dodges, restore endurance and use dodges to increase your damage.
Arms: bleed on crit, increased crit chance, deal more damage to bleeding foes

Minor trait should be designed to give a reward for doing basic stuff: like dodging, hitting your foe, get boons, use your class mechanic, … But some are designed around specific builds (Necros Death Magic = Minion master, …)

Every trait line grant specific bonus stats power, vita, … and the traits within those lines are normally designed around a specific “topic”, that should also be boosted by the stats of that line (here are some exceptions: ranger traps (condis in power line), necros vampiric (nearly zero scaling with healing power), …).
But for most trait lines the traits are designed with a topic in mind.
Necros Death Magic is designed around Minions and staff
Warrior Tactics is designed around Banners and Shouts

Overall I have to say a lot of the traits are a mess only the warrior has them relatively well sorted and fitting together.

Professions were poorly thought out and implemented.
