I don’t know much about mesmers outside of them owning me 1v1 and their utilities, so i’m not going to comment on their large group dps abilities.
however, I will point out that any good zerg will have at least 2 mesmers in their group. veils and ports are an invaluable asset to an organized group that no other class can provide.
and the reason for fixing it was because it’s a bug. sure, maybe it’s a bug that gives you an advantage, but it’s still a bug.
also, just because you aren’t the best in zergs doesn’t mean you can’t do zergs at all. with a little tinkering I made a ranger build that has more survivability than wars/guards and decent dps.

Yes, portal, veil, null field, TW…all very useful and necessary for zergs. But those are literally the only things mesmers do in a zerg. Can’t tag people quickly, can’t do much AoE damage, our clones and phants die instantly in zergs (and require targets, so if you spawn iZerker on someone and then they die…well, goodbye the only reliable AoE damage we have aside from Chaos Storm on staff).
Phantasms are also 100% broken on gates right now. They won’t attack the gate, but they will aggro on players behind the gate. So our main source of damage can’t be used on gates like every other class’ can.
Mesmers are in a terrible place right now in WvW, outside of small groups/roaming, which they’re quite strong in. There’s a good reason why people call the class veilbots or utilitybots for zerging, though.

You are correct OP. Mesmers are not needed for any sort of large zerg encounters in WvW, but then neither are Engineers, Rangers and possibly Thieves. You can get by in a zerg of course, but you would be much more of a boon to your zerg by just being another Guardian. Although it can be useful to have at least one Mesmer to hide in a tower/keep if your initial assault fails.
Mesmer does have a small role in largish GvGs as a Veil bot, if either of the guilds involved need one. But it’s small group roaming where Mesmer is actually able to shine, along with Engineer, Ranger and Thief.
Yeah the only thing they’re good at for this outside of veilng is the gank squad, which relies on hoping that a necro or staff ele gets out of position so you can focus and kill them. I wouldn’t say that its too much weaker than thief for that role as you can keep the pressure up from ranged from GS and shatters, but at the end of the day you’re only killing a few players at time, you can’t bomb and you can’t melee train. Thieves while being better gankers, are overall less useful because they don’t have veil and shadow refuge doesn’t sync well with zergballs, although they do have a really good spammable blast finisher.
So overall I’d say that mesmer is probably the most useful WvW class of the TREM classes, but it lacks the area support/CC skills and raw AoE damag bombs that the GWEN meta needs to function.

Mesmers are OP to anyone who doesn’t understand them. Which is a factor solved by a basic skill called “game sense”.
Devs don’t play mes serious outside of zergs and dungeons, fall for the misconception of the communities ignorance that they are OP 1v1, and without any practice fighting them and learning over time they don’t understand them.
Perpetual nerfs and ignored fixes harm the core play of mesmers and in the long run makes them less and less viable.
You could hear the lack of enthusiasm and even confusion in the class balance “ready up” in regards to the class. Mesmers have needed design support for a while, but all they have been reduced to is utility bots.
In any situation why bring a mesmer?:
When you can bring a tanky DPS that not only can cover some of the mesmers utility roles but also wont die and will prob do only slightly less damage than a full 6-8 (including IP) clone shatter?
When you can roll a thief and do more damage with more survivability (either via evade spam or stealth) and much less set up for burst, that when countered isn’t instantly screwed due to c/ds?
When you can roll a designated support build from virtually any other class and still bring more utility to the table of the few things that matter (like cc and reflection) but only miss out on 10 seconds of time warp (on a 3.5 min c/d) and portal.
When other glass (or even non glass) has better escape?
When you can actually swing a greatsword that isn’t on a 30 sec c/d?
When other classes can solo bosses and dungeons faster and more efficiently?
