With the upcoming ranger changes...
i dont think there is such a thing as pure ranged play. for every class that has a ranged weapon, that class has a melee weapon that does much much more damage (with the possible exception of condi necros, as scepter is scepter).
that said, if this is just a contest of who is “least bad” by not swapping out of the ranged weapon, it depends on what aspect of the game you play.
group pve, zerg wvw? Elementalists.
solo pve? ranger.
solo wvw? no pure ranged is good, except possibly necro.
pvp? no pure ranged is good, except possibly necro.
in other words, patch wont change the status quo. on top of that, being excited about ranger changes without seeing the changes of most of the other classes yet is premature. likely, warrior longbow will no longer cost adreniline or have a cd, elementalists will get a 3 minute cooldown on RTL and necros will get .001% increase to leeching scaling, maybe jagged horrors back if they whimper too loudly.
(eg too soon to be predicting winners and losers off anything other than bitter feelings about what has passed for balance adjustments in previous patches).

in a nutshell: Stick to what I like that keeps me playing this game. Got it.
Eh, regardless of what the other classes get, Rangers still come out ahead in this patch because they’re getting improved in a lot of areas. Getting onto every PvP team? Quite possibly no, but they are definitely coming out ahead of where they were.
we dont know what will happen with the other classes, but dont worry: meele>ranged this is one of the base statements of this game

IMO, people are grossly overstating the Ranger changes. If I were you, I’d play each class you’re are considering in sPvP for a few days and see if you enjoy playing the class. If you enjoy playing the class, it won’t matter too much where their relative power is.
That all said, what the previous poster asked is also important… what do you plan to do with your character? Rangers in particular are notorious for providing nothing of value to a group (and being very reliant on condis when roaming).
Play each class and see if you enjoy it and then come back asking for advice imo.

Its not hard for rangers to come out from these changes. As they say its easy to improve on garbage, whether the changes will make longbow ranger a thing tho its hard to tell. We will have to see what kind of nerfs thieves get before we start seeing more lb ranger.

Exactly what I was thinking. And even for Necros it’s very debatable due to how easily you’ll lose ~65% of your damage if someone is cleansing.

I play all the classes and they all have their fair share of bad players and good players. When you make generalizations like this it just reinforces the fact that we should ignore the poster as having nothing of value to say.

Kind of like the posts that don’t attempt to refute the claims and instead berate the poster? OP should do exactly what I suggested… play each class for a few rounds and see if it’s something they like. If it is, come back with more specific questions.

Perhaps you shouldn’t generalize poor play for an entire class of characters because you happen to run into players that may be unfamiliar with them.
But then you missed the point, (no surprise I suppose) Let me clarify it for you: All classes have good players and all classes have bad players that do things to mess up the encounters.

i enjoy playing power necromancer a lot, i don’t enjoy how easy it is to spike me compared to other classes using similar setups.
