I just had another break from GW2 and came back with a fresh and game enjoying mindset. I quit my old guild and came back to solo roaming in WvW, what I enjoy the most.

I saw that tower, undefended and a camp close by, so I decided to build a catapult and bombard that one wall. It all went great, until that guardian showed up. I still managed to bombard the wall, but I had to be aware of course. When a D/D Ele joined, it got a bit more challenging. After some time, I managed to down the guardian, while my catapult was still there, so I started to finish him, successfully avoided his downed push back skill. His downed life bar was at around 20%, the finish animation was almost done and the the ele managed to kill my catapult, causing the guardian to rally. Nothing else, no other NPC, no other player was around.

That was extremely frustrating. I was okay, that they will eventually destroy my catapult. But all my effort in defending a catapult against 2 players and gainign the upper hand, was destroyed by an extremely frustrating rally mechanic, that rewards not the skillful play. I know, that was asked often already, but please remove the rallying on NPCs and Siege Engines. It is unfair and frustrating.

TL;DR: Rallying on NPCs and Siege Engines is an unfair mechanic, that punishes the party with fewer numbers even further. Please remove it.

Well, I can understand rallying on NPC guards, since well, they’re part of the WvW games. It’d make sense if you cannot rally on general mobs but then, that’d be so confusing and inconsistent for a WvW newcomer, I can understand why they’re not doing that. :P

Rather, I think it needs to be less easy to get out of downed, while at the same time downed needs to feel more meaningful.

To that end:

  • Rebalance the 1-3 skills to be stronger, and the 2 and 3 skills to show more class identity. Note: I am specifically against just homogenizing the 2-skill to be some kind of target-less stomp-avoid, rather, each 2 and 3 skill should provide some function which in a group is important to keep up the total group power.
  • Make it so that only one person can help someone downed get up.
  • Make the downed-HP-bar larger, and give downed players a certain AE avoidance (50% or so, since they cannot easily move out of AE any more).
  • You rally only if you’re actively attacking the target dying (your skills tag targets for ~1-1,5s).
  • Underwater, make the 4-skill swimming upwards, quickly. You can only get back up by swimming to the surface, where you regenerate health. That’s it, other players when they help you only stabilize you (you stop drowning for ~10s after a 2s cast by the other player).
The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

Yes, Rallying is an incredibly dumb snowballing mechanic. It really makes me question the devs ability to design coherently. That, among other things, is why I so despise the entire downed-state mechanic and everything that surrounds it.

Yes, Rallying is an incredibly dumb snowballing mechanic. It really makes me question the devs ability to design coherently. That, among other things, is why I so despise the entire downed-state mechanic and everything that surrounds it.

It makes a lot of sense in PvE, and in general in regards to the combat system. It feels really good, too. Gives you those awesome “comeback” moments.

It snowballs in PvP, sure. Which isn’t necessarily such a bad thing as far as WvW is concerned, though I can understand why it might annoy people in weird-PvP.

Possible. I wasn’t aware that he did smth. like that. The guard rallied in the very moment the catapult died. At this time the Ele was attacking the catapult. I will look further into that. I didn’t think before you can rally off of siege, but it sure looked like it.

It is also possible smth else, the guard tagged earlier, died in this very moment, when the catapult died. It could be just a crazy coincidence. Maybe I’ll find a guy from another server, with whom I can test it tonight.

And this hits the nail on the head. It works in PvE. And they don’t seperate PvE and WvW. So it will never be changed. So sad.
