Q:
I’m basically new to GW2, and I was wondering what classes Excel at PvE and WvW?(WvW is my main concern)
I’ll add more to this if the need arises.

Play a ranger.
Use Sword + Warhorn and longbow or shortbow as secondary weapon (when you can unlock them)
Pet to use;
Any type of dog (canine) + a cat (feline) pet.
Personal favorite combination of pets; Alpine Wolf and Snow Leopard
What race to use as ranger?
Human – Hounds of Bathazar and Reaper of Grenth is actually quite good if you want to make some “unorthodox” builds.
Norn – best GTFO buttons ingame
Asura – Pain inverter, technobabble and radiation field is actually quite good. The former can be seriously strong if used correctly.
What armor to use?
In the beginning load up on precision and ferocity. Later on, you should aim for more tanky setups, such as Knights, Soldier’s or Dire. The latter is a condition build, and is very strong 1v1 but less effective in 1vX
What to do when unlocking the Traits?
In the beginning, dump all your points into beastmastery and Wilderness survival. These two traitlines will carry you throughout the game. I do advise exploring the other lines once you start to reach max level.
The reason to prioritize beastmastery during leveling is because the pet power doesn’t scale like your character, and for a brief period, the pet will be more powerful then yourself, before you reach the later stages of the game where you yourself will be stronger then the pet.
How to play ranger?
Be active, try to read your opponent and time your dodges (Shift key for dodge, or sword #2 and #3 to gain “evasion”. Evasion negates all damage). Pay attention to your pet, and recall it if the enemy is winding up for a big impact (F3 to recall). Pet’s also bring a lot of utilities, try to gather as many pet types as possible, they all have unique abilities that can be very handy.
Tanky pets; Bears, Drakes, Spiders
Semi-tanky pets; Moa’s, Devourers
Balanced pets; Canines, pigs
Raw damage pets; Felines and birds
As for the class itself, do not mistake it as a “range”-r. The name has nothing to do with it’s function. Infact, the class is most successful when playing melee, this is due to how the game itself greatly favors melee over any form of ranged or casting.
Sword is a very weird and hard to use weapon, the sooner you learn to use it, and eventually master it, the better you will be when you reach the later stages. Too many start training with the sword too late, and end up going back to less efficient setups because they “cannot be kitten d” to learn the way of the sword.
good luck. and i hope to see you ingame.
Guardian
Warrior
Elementalist
Take your pick.
As Jakum said in wvw the best class in order are guardian, warrior, ele… the worst is thief in anything
I’ve narrowed it down to guardian and elementalist. They both seem good, so I’m having trouble deciding. Which would benefit one who doesn’t want to die more?
We need precisions, do you want roaming or zerging in wvw ?
Warriors and eles are good at both (staff for zerging, double dagger for roaming).
Guardian are less good at roaming (they’re strong but lack mobility to escape kittenty situations).
I’m going to zerg.
Then it’s easy, if you want to frontline and tank play a guardian. If you want to do absurd amounts of damage with staff then pick and ele.
I’m going to zerg.
warrior, guardian,ele
if u wanna pve and wvw
then no to….
ranger:
ai in wvw is terrrible and makes this class not very useful in wvw
mes: ok in pve. problems with getting enough tags in big pve raids, but decent for dungeons. veilbot/utilitybot in wvw.. lack of aoe, again ai depending classs, so no good for wvw
necro:
great in wvw, unwanted in pve dungeon runs.
and then…
…
actually just go war. best in every game mode, easy to learn and to understand.

actually just go war. best in every game mode, easy to learn and to understand.
and you will be labeled a “ezmode fotm scrub” right off the bat since warrior = 0 skill requirement.
But then again, personal pride =/= important.
Go with a Warrior, top of the line in every gamemode. You can zerg, roam, pve, pvp. A lot of viable builds. Support, Control-spam, tank, power damage, condition damage.
And its a relatively easy profession to play, and still do well with. Play a Warrior for yourself and you will soon realize why there are so many of them.
Can’t go wrong with Warrior or Guardian if you want a melee class. Can’t go wrong with a Necro or Ele if you want a ranged class. Be forewarned that the Ele has a steep learning curve where the other classes do not.
This is the GWEN meta you’ll hear about as you play the game more and more.
Warrior is pretty good for new players in Wvw and pve.
