Alright, i was playing lunatic inquisition and some people (that i wont say the names here) starting complaining and “ordering” the survivors to die to complete the event faster so they could farm the rewards, and after standing up against that and refusing to die, i got flammed and called selfish etc etc etc, about how i refuse to help the majority…. I mean, seriously, im playing the game for FUN, i can’t even play a Holiday event anymore without being cursed upon because im actually playing the game? people who think everything is a Farmplace and curse at people who want to have fun, Anet fix these “farmable” events or whatever, make it a daily so people who want to have fun on Lunatic Inquisition actually dont get flammed for “following the instructions”

I don’t really see it as different, personally. There’s no mandatory requirement to participate in a zerg to complete content. It’s a little like when low level players are harassed in Queensdale for ‘interfering’ with the champ train.

I’ll sometimes wait for someone else to make the first move if I’m hanging around, say, the Rotting Oakheart (for the Shadow Behemoth pre-event,) but I don’t feel any real responsibility to maximize the efficiency of the zerg, whether it’s in Queensdale, Frostgorge, or the Labyrinth. I wouldn’t just set off an event without doing it, for the sake of messing with the train, but I don’t expect every event to be up whenever I’m in the area, and a train shouldn’t expect it, either.

As for farming Lunatic Inquisition, that’s absurd. Block ‘em so you don’t see their messages and keep playing normally, I’d say. If they can get a whole instance of players who want to farm it, okay, I suppose, but they can find somewhere better to farm, and that’s no call for getting abusive.

That said, it sounds like you tried “standing up to them” verbally, which involves engaging them. Principled stance or not, it might be better to just not say anything and/or block them, rather than talk to them. They can argue with someone who argues back, but they’re just stuck with someone who stonewalls them.

I can’t tell if you’re serious or not, Avatara. If you’re just poking at the OP for spelling, good heavens, there must be something better to do. So I’ll assume you’re serious.

“Flaming” is internet slang for verbal abuse, especially in the context of a heated argument. You might think of it as each side shooting fire at each other. The implication of a “flame war” is that an argument has devolved out of real discussion into just insults. In this case, the OP seems to have gotten into an argument with other players in Lunatic Inquisition, which lead to insults/flaming.

There isn’t an incentive, that’s why he doesn’t comply. The farmers are trying to farm him but are unwilling to put in the effort to actually best him in the game. Therefore, they “order” him to give in.

Of course there’s an incentive. Now you’re just lying.

If he wins he gets 10, but with people sacrificing themselves it’s obvious the survivor team isn’t organised meaning surviving the full time is near impossible.

Essentially he can choose to receive 3 bags every 3 minutes or every 13 minutes. The people sacrificing themselves are understandably annoyed because even if he does win he did so on the backs of people who gave up their chance at 10 bags in order to receive 3 bags faster and one guy is doubling the ammount of time to get those 3 bags for no reason (if he loses) or at the expense of the people who likely could have survived to the end and received 5 bags (had they known there would be a holdout).

Should they be ‘abusing’ the guy? God no. He’s just playing the game. Are they ‘abusing’ him? Likely not. People who know they’re being sticklers tend to interpret “Hey, I want you to die faster” as ‘abuse’. They’re sensitive beings who believe they’re master’s of the universe for playing games ‘as intended’.

Then again there is a proportion of the playerbase who would very easily insult the guy’s mother, so who really knows what’s happening. Likely something in-between.

But to pretend there isn’t an incentive to die right away is completely disingenuous. The farmers want him to join them and reap the equal rewards, not ‘farm him’. He can choose not to comply but unless he’s winning the game he’s disadvantaging everyone and could just as easily join a game where everyone is there to “have fun” instead of taking a moral stand against people who don’t care.

So, trying to survive isn’t winning the game? Maybe you won’t get the most amount of points, but I think the idea is to survive the night. I.e. to stay alive the entire time.

I once was the last survivor, and I only found out after I was killed… (that chainsaw I got should have given it away, I mean, everybody should try to stay alive as long as you can, just for that!)

No name calling, no abuse, no flaming. I think people that flame because there’s a survivor out there aren’t doing their best to find that survivor…

I enjoyed Inquisition last year.
Then again, last year we didn’t have the champ train and event farming for rewards mentality and the unacceptable behavior of an ever-growing portion of those that take part in the farming trains.

True, there were trains and farmers last year, but the sour and aggressive ‘me, me, me, do as I say’ mentality has had over a year to fester, and with each game update this horrible behavior has only been rewarded…and seemingly encouraged.

I won’t even be trying Inquisition this year for the exact reason stated by the OP; it won’t be fun. I wanted to spend a lot of time playing it this year, but all I’ve heard from people who went in with fond memories of last year and wanting to play it as it was intended, is that it simply cannot be played for fun anymore.

If my entire team is just going to sacrifice themselves just to ‘get it over with’ to get their optimal rewards faster instead of playing as it is intended…why bother? What I found fun about the game wasn’t just beating the other team to win the round, it was outlasting my teammates to show that I was better at hiding and evading. If they all give up at the start just to ‘get it over with’ so they can get their APs and junk bags, then the part of Inquisition I enjoy no longer exists.

So, what is intentionally losing a game when you have two parties, one who’s task it is to stay alive as long as possible and the other to find all survivors as fast as possible?

You can’t blame the players for getting rewarded for this behavior. Do it faster, receive more rewards. The game developer should put restrictions in place to prevent this behavior.

That’s pretty kitten selfish of you. As a zerg we come together as a community, to gain equal rewards for everyone. In this scenario you’re just stealing all the rewards for yourself, unwilling to share. Or you could stay ignorant and “just be playing the game”.

It is absolutely not selfish. A zerg isn’t about community – it’s about optimising farming via an overpowering mass of players to reduce the amount of skill and time required to smite bosses and churn out champ loot. It’s mind-numbingly dull, performance-intensive, and certainly would not be done if not for farming purposes – hence the reason you don’t see zergs where the rewards aren’t good.

Some players get performance problems in zergs. Some players just want to be able to see what the hell they are doing. Some players would like to get a hit on a boss before the zerg decimates it. They are none of them obliged to participate in a zerg to complete map content. I’ve seen far more rude commanders/zerg participants than I have seen people deliberately screwing with a champ train.

This is killing “their” champs out of order, purposely farming a champ in “their” dome repeatedly in pavilion, trying to stay alive in inquisition, etc.

If people want to ruin your fun by being selfish and disrespectful, do exactly what they don’t want you to do so long as you do not break any of the rules for the game.

Yeah, I pretty much have similar ideas, I like to play for fun and see what I am doing. I recently made an Ascalonian Catacombs p3 with a fine group of newbies. They weren’t the most skilled person in the world but we manadge to do everyting without to much trouble.

Two guys left and two others from the LFG joined us for an AC p1, little did I now those guys I moved with were speed farmers. I ended up dying a lot while I didn’t even hit the floor on my previous run. They were shouting whenever we standed one step to much on the left or right and all they did was asking to skip everything and exploit every possible way the game to avoid some of the ennemies mechanics. Not to mention their rudeness…

I realy didn’t enjoy that run, when that guy asked me if I wanted to speedrun p2 I clearly said “no”, he asked me “why?”, I simply told him “Because I don’t like you.”, I quited the group and the remaining people from my previous run whisped me with a smiley.

I miss the old days, after release, before christmas 2012. Where the map chat was full of conversations, people having fun, discussing things. “Things will get worse when the playerbase from the game that shalt not be named will get their hands on this game”, they said. I didn’t want to believe it.

One year later, what has happened? Anet’s promise of no farming, no grinding and no gear-treadmilling has been long since forgotten. Because the influx of players that get into a game, create their first character and immediately go “so, what’s the best class? build? how do I level fastest? how can i get the best gear asap?” seem to make up such a huge amount of the player base that they must be catered to. I understand that, the staff needs to be paid. And even though I probably dumped about 200€ or more in the past year in the cash shop (mostly for fashion and harvesting tools and character slots and bank slots – btw we need more fashion/skins), I guess I’m not the target demographic and my contribution is too little.

These days the map chat only reads “where’s the train at!”, “train at X” or just “zerg at X” and “OMG some idiots are ruining the train!”. Conversations? No. Fun? No. It’s about efficiency. It’s about farming. It’s about making the most gold/h. And the game gets designed around that.

From my guildie I heard that last year’s Halloween was amazing. I missed it because I moved and didn’t have internet for the time being. I was looking forward to it all year. What I got was a grindfest and the statement “It’s certainly nothing like last year”. Yay.

Worst of all, the people that do this mindnumbingly boring stuff that is running in a circle all day long everyday even get rewarded and thus feel entitled to what they’re doing. They yell at you for playing the game it’s intended. You call out the event so others can do it, but all you get is hateful messages how you shouldn’t dare messing with THE ORDER!!11

ANet has created a beautiful world, full or lore, NPCs with funny or interesting dialogue and things to discover, fun things to do. It’s just that they do everything they can to keep people away from it and give them braindead farming because that’s what people want.

Yesterday I was playing with a guildie in the Fields of Ruin, just doing an ogre wars event. A random guy came along and asked “This is for Foulbear Kraal, right?”, to which I said “Yes, but the world boss is bugged atm”. His response: “Lol, why do the event then?”
Obviously, if there is no bonus chest to be had, there’s no point in playing the game. If you can make more gold running in circles all day in Queensdale or Frostgorge, there’s no other point in playing the game except yelling at the people that play it that way since release.

I don’t know if the Devs share my frustration, they made this world after all. But I don’t like the way GW2 is turning into a grindfest. At least make it so that the stupid grinding does not interrupt regular gameplay / can be interrupted by people foolishly playing the game ‘selfishly’, aka not the most efficient.

On topic:
You did the right thing, OP. Noone can force you how to play the game, especially when YOU were the one playing it as it was intended. Don’t listen to all the goldfarmers/progamers/zergrunners, they’re just mad you keep them from gaining more virtual pointless gold in a short amount of time.

Being a “PvE Noob” I would just like to say that I totally agree with everything that’s been said about zergs/trains and increasingly rude players. I’ve been playing since the 2nd beta, and the game was more fun then, though I find that ignoring the trains works just fine for me.

I have mostly avoided the whole living world updates because of the above things, I like to play at my own pace (which is fast leveling, but slow on achievements etc), and I absolutely HATE that I only have a 2 week window to complete a meta-achievement.
I did do this year’s halloween meta-achievement because I wanted the candycorn mining node, so I joined the labyrinth train/zerg, which was pretty boring, but otherwise I wouldnt be able to complete some of the achievements I need in time.

Same goes for dungeons, I’m kind of dreading to do them. I have no guild, and I’m a total newbie when it comes to them, so I want to explore them with people who don’t mind me screwing up and don’t mind me wanting to take it slow, but all I see in the LFG window is speed farms

You can play how you want and the commander should not yell at you for that. However, he or she should give you the benefit of the doubt and explain the benefit of working as a team and you the player should be open minded to this idea since the Labyrinth was essentially made to be farmed.

By commanding a zerg the whole community gets to benefit from a door, not just 3-4 people at a time. People following 1 commander through the event get the benefit of getting all the doors, getting all the boss chests and loot, and potentially getting more drops due to scale up. They also get the benefits of rezzes if they get downed, and speed buffs from door to door. The doors do not show up back to back. So imagine if 3-4 people each went to a door and opened them at the same time….now they are all sitting there for 10-15min waiting for another door to pop up and rushing to get to that 1 door from all over the map (more upset players). However if a organized zerg goes from door to door 1 at a time, the normal wait for the next door to pop is much less.

Hope this now makes more sense to you, and shows you why this scenario is much different than the one the OP posted about. The zerg was also benefical and brought most of the community together during the Scarlet invasions. By going to the commander lead zergs, the size of the group results in several aether champs to spawn. Smaller groups did not get this benefit. Anet was promoting large scale zerg farming for this instance, the Labyrinth, and during the Queen’s gauntlet.

I’ve already pretty much explained why, but I feel that Scarlet is the prime example of why zergs are farmer-first, play-naturally second. Zergs were ultimately the worst way to approach that event for fun and actual completion, and still are . . . unless you want to farm Aetherblade pirates and other miscellaneous champs. A lot of this is driven by problematic game mechanics and reward systems as well, of course.

But I don’t want to divert from the OP’s topic any further. I personally felt, and still feel, it’s an equivalent concern, but I’ve said my piece so I’ll let you guys get back to it

So this boils down to achievement point farming? Personal AP is even more of a joke.

Telling you to die so they can get points OP? How about they come pry them from your cold dead hand? You are in the right in my opinion.

the champ trains in low level zones like Queensdale is also kind of a disgrace, new players have no idea what’s going on they stumble upon the troll rune stone, move it and then get yelled at in map chat, i’ve seen it happen. The zerg train has no more claim to the troll stone than any other player or group. It’s a weak mentality, to follow the group just to get those rewards much faster. Also these new players don’t learn how to play, they learn how to zerg, then then come to dungeons and complain that the game is too hard because the essentially have to be reprogrammed.

This wasn’t an issue when i had low levels in queensdale because champs used to give out crappy blues so killing them wasn’t really a priority for a lot of players only those looking for a small chunk of exp.

I like champ loot boxes i think it’s a good idea, but leave it to people to figure out a way to ruin the experience for everyone who doesn’t go along with the herd.

OP, you had wonderful situation where you can troll the kitten out of other people and there was no way they could get you banned for this and you complain? This is even more fun than luring Eye of Zhaitan to a group of bots. Next time someone angers you that way just do your best to ruin his day instead of crying on the forums – feels a lot better.

I think this is just a difference in purpose of the participation.

The farmers just want to get their loot and get out as quickly as possible, whereas the opener wants to “win” by being the last villager standing when the timer runs out.

Obviously there is a problem here because you cannot achieve the objectives of both groups and neither side is more right or wrong in its desires than the other side.

However if we take a utilitarian approach then the opener should be sacrificing his own chance to be the last villager standing in order to increase the reward/time earned by all players.

I logged in last night and decided to “try” these zerg champ trains everyone has been mentioning for the first time. I’m by no means a new player as I have several 80s and I stick mostly to dungeon speed runs. I’ve just never done a champ train before.

Came to Queensdale, asked where train was. A person said “Boar.” I asked “WP?” No answer. I asked again and still no answer. About a minute later someone said “Now Oak.” I knew where Oak was so I ported over and found a corpse. I thought, “Ok, maybe I just ran too slow.” This is about the time I realized I was not going to get much help so I looked up the train route online for a bit of reference. I asked where the train was after researching. Someone said “Heading for Bandit.” I knew exactly where Bandit was, quickly hit the wp and started running. However immediately after I loaded into the wp, there was another person saying “now heading to Oak.” I was wondering how they were killing so fast. It considered it literally not possible to be “heading” to a champ, only to hear it dead 20 seconds later. I started to realize they were telling me “heading to champ” even though they were already there and fighting currently. I asked them if they could give me a heads up a little earlier and I got several rude responses including but not limited to “we all know the path and are very efficient at it kthxbye” and “learn the path and you won’t have to ask us noob.” I thought “Ok, I’m out of here.”

I decided to then give Frostgorge a try. I asked where the champ train was and I got the response “Um, everyone can see it on the map.” I looked at the map and through my own reasoning, assumed they were talking about one of the several Commander badges running around. I asked if they meant the commander badges. They mocked me about how I was “A quick one.” I replied, there are literally 4 different Commanders all over the map. At least this time I got an apology from the same guy. They told me which one they were and I met up with the zerg. I thought “great, now I’m in the mix!” A champ showed up, we burned it down, and boom…I got zero credit. I was like “whaaaa? Maybe it was a fluke.” After struggling to keep up with Commanders WPing around all over without announcement to see if Champs have spawned (a few had not so they immediately WP out), I proceed to get no credit for the next two champs as well. I ask what the deal was. They tell me to group up or it might not count the contribution. Others say that they are grouped up but sometimes they still don’t get contribution.

At this point I’ve already wasted an entire hour, had to fend off unnecessarily rude people, and am just mentally tired/strained from trying to understand the entire ordeal. I made the conclusion that Champ trains are annoying and not worth my time anymore.

tl;dr: If you want guidance in this game, don’t expect it from the player base. Sad but true.

I agree, you will get the same experience from every single player in the game. They are all like that, every last one of them. Sad but true.

In all seriousness, add me and I can show you the ropes if you’re interested.

You should try guesting to a smaller server if you tried this on one of the large ones, I hear the trains are quite volatile on the bigger servers

side note: a lot of times when champs are dead by the time you even get there, it’s because people outside the zerg were fighting them prior to the zerg arriving, and didn’t say anything about it. . At least on YB that’s how it usually goes.

Yeah, I’ve been on JQ since launch so I’ll agree it probably has at least a tiny effect on my overall experiences when doing anything in-game.
