Please tell me it isn’t true… are the Mad King and Executioners outfits costumes only?

They’re both extremely cool-looking (for a change) and you can’t apply them as armor?

If I’m wrong here please tell me, but I am going to be extremely disappointed if I can’t wear that executioner’s outfit on my thief out in PVE (or PVP for that matter)

With the leaks of the terrible new ascended armor skins, I got excited at this, until I read that they’re for costume brawl.

It’s the same as last year, they are just town clothes.

They’re costumes, and their skills are only useful for costume brawl. I’m not sure why this is coming as such a surprise.

Personally, I’ve had tons of fun with the Mad King and Witch costumes over the past year. Costume Brawl is underrated. <<;

started playing just after halloween last year

Anyone else disappointed you can’t wear (at least the executioner’s) as armor?
ANET, I would buy this if it was wearable in open world, but definitely will not as a costume.

I wouldn’t say it’s not worth buying just cause you can’t wear it in combat, they’re still cool outfits. Even though, it would be awesome to be able to use them over your armor.

They’d be cooler and longer lasting in RP use if you could avoid the massive shoulder spikes on the Prince and the giant skull belt buckle on the Executioner. Heck, if they were top and pants in separate pieces, that would help. Alas, the shirt overwrites any pants you are wearing.

The Executioner boots and gloves are nice wardrobe additions, however, and the Axe and Staff have fun skills and when not in Brawl you can summon a bat (staff) and swap to the axe and summon a skeleton and both will be out at the same time.

The dye fields are pretty well organized to allow a lot of customization of color. Note that the Prince tunic dims and greys out any color added, so no sparkling white. Minor QoL: Why do dye field sizes have no relation to which part of the garment they change? The biggest field on the gloves alters a tiny band around the forearm, leaving a much smaller field to be the main glove color.

They are cool outfits, but Anet says that creating armor is harder and takes more time than creating weapons. If so, then I would prefer that they used their time on creating combat armor instead of town clothes. I really like the executioner armor, but I won’t buy it because I don’t feel like supporting town clothes.

I think the reasoning here might be storage; assuming you don’t already have other costume items on a particular character, equipping one of the new-style outfits leaves you holding a shirt, instead of a shirt, pants, and shoes. While I have had some nuisance in storing all my town clothes, I’ve also been known to mix parts, so I’m not sure yet how I feel about this “reduced clutter, reduced customization” solution.

Of course, some sort of costume locker would solve the problem very cleanly. -cough-

I’d kill to have the executioners armor on my asura. I really don’t understand why they insist on wasting these awesome skins like this. The game suffers from a lack of visual diversity and bringing all the town clothes into PvE would do wonders to cure it. And for those still citing immersion as a reason not to let us use the skins in real combat I’d ask you to consider the implementation of weapons like the silly scimitar.

Well, we can hope that one day the devs will code in the ability to display our costumes on top of our armor, just like they did for GW1.

Completely agree with this

Executioner’s armor skin as a costume, but the rubber sword is a PVE weapon? ANET – do you not think this is backwards?

You’d think that, but, frankly, I see people argue “It wouldn’t break immersion! Look at ____!” way more often than I see anyone argue “But <skin> would break immersion if it were combat clothes!” The simple truth is that the costume skins are costumes because that’s what they were made for, mechanically, and not because they couldn’t work as armor. Just look at the toy weapon skins from Wintersday and it becomes obvious that “it’s not realistic enough” isn’t the reason for town clothes being unusable in combat. Let’s quit raising that point for the sole purpose of knocking it down.

A bigger issue, I imagine, is making armor for each weight class, especially if you want to package the weapon with the armor. Executioner armor, for instance— Is it light armor? Medium? The axe seems like a heavy weapon, but it’s too large to work as one of GW2’s 1h axes, so it would either have to be a staff (like existing scythe skins,) or not exist at all, which basically kills the “Executioner” concept. It could maybe be a hammer, but then the mostly-cloth armor would have to be heavy. The Witch is pretty obviously light armor, and the broom could be a staff. The Bloody Prince outfit looks to be light or medium, but his staff would require the armor to be light or heavy, and makes for our third “probably has to be a staff” weapon. The Mad King outfit is the only one the looks like it could work for any weight class, though its scepter is only light/heavy. Looks like the weapons will have to be sold separately, which really hurts the concept of the executioner, who becomes “guy with hood and no huge axe.”

Unsurprisingly, most of the town clothes look like light or medium armor, even though their toys are usually light or heavy weapons. ArenaNet could, in theory, let any weight class wear any costume in combat, like in GW1, but they seem pretty set against doing that, given how none of the current gem store skins allow that, even going so far as to have three different weights of Aetherblade skins. I suppose they could do Witch / Prince / Mad King as a set of light/medium/heavy skins, like the Profane/Krytan/Primeval trio…although that would have required an extra skin last year, and possibly no new skins this year.

Also, imagine a world were a large portion of the warriors/guardians you see are all dressed in the Mad King armor, including fire, pumpkin heads, the works. Like a new CoF armor, it risks losing its coolness rather quickly. And, of course, then you have even more people complaining that the “best” armor is gem store armor, rather than dungeon armor or something.
