Is Mad King evil, or just mad?
He is insane and from reading his history, I’m going to lean on evil as well.

During his childhood, Oswald Thorn left his friend, Samson, to die by a giant wurm, and when older tricked Ewan into a giant spider’s web to be killed. Before being crowned, he used to play a game “Prince Oswald Says,” which eventually became “Mad King Says.” Shortly before ascending to the throne, he killed his father, and as he was crowned his first decree was immediate death to all traitors.
So evil that his subjects conspired to kill him, dismember his body and scatter his body parts to the four corners of Tyria.
He’s coming back and he’s kitten ed.
he is chaotic evil aligned

Well, he was Mad and Evil. But now he play with toys and every year comes to Tyria to celebrate stuff.

Did you not do the dungeon last year?

I did dungeon and all achievments. Still it was feels like he want’s to play and nothing more.
He’s both evil and mad.
Yeah, he’s definently chaotic evil, while entertaining and fun, is pretty horrible. Which is why I so much more like Palawa Joko who’s lawful evil, who MKT seems to have a war with, or had and will probably resume.

I still think he is too deep in madness in his mind to be truly evil.

He starved his subjects then cut off their hands when they stole food. That’s pretty kitten evil.
Definitely evil and quite, quite mad.
He is sadistic as he kills people for fun, tortures those that break his law and executes and assassinates people that are close to him just to gain power. Due to the fact that while he was alive he made attempts to conceal his tendencies for murder, I would call him a homicidal sociopath.
He also has an invisible pony. I wish I was making that up.

How could I have forgotten his invisible pony. But yeah, fairly confident in saying mad king is very evil
He is just Mad. He still has enough morals to follow the rules of his return but not enough to be crazy and kill everyone he knew.

By all accounts, halloween is the only time the barrier is weak enough for him to escape, not so much a rule he set. Not to say he’s weak; we all know the power he holds.
He’s a psychopath. He’s insane, but I would say he’s also evil.

He’s not obeying rules because he wants to. He wants to break free and return and reap revenge. He swore he would even. But the seals on him prevent him despite his powerful magic. And the weakening of the barrier is only enough to make him pull temporary magic which he just uses for jokes (he loves jokes, especially fatal ones).
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
From what I recall from last year, in fact, the seals made it so that while he could return on one day, his power was constrained so he could only engage in jokes (and couldn’t permanently kill anyone).
His attempt to break out, if successful, would have removed those restraints, which to all indications would have been… bad.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
In short, Yes.

He was evil yes when he was alive. But in the death he looks like a true madman
He skinned people alive. I don’t care how crazy you are, that’s pretty twisted.
You mad bro?
I think he’s just angry.

He is Mad. If he were Evil, he will be the Evil King instead of the Mad King.

It is as if people in here are trying to tell me that they do not trust a person with that smile.
Oh, the Mad King is very evil.
If you don’t believe all the annals of his history or the interviews of the ghosts whose deaths he caused, just talk to him as a villager in Lunatic Inquisition.
He states that his ghosts are going to eat you. While cackling maniacally.

Yes, he WAS evil, but his madness so hard so it’s consume all evileness. To be EVIL you have to understand your thoughts.
Honestly i wouldnt call him evil as much as i would a utterly insane omnicidal maniac with a eating disorder that will cause people to mistake him for a Brit.
The question is just as weird/worthless as asking if Cthulhu, Shoggy or Hastur are evil, beings that ascend to demigodhood with a perspective on reality that is unthinkable to us just falls under something entirely different.
To be EVIL you have to understand your thoughts.
I’m going to disagree with you there. Half of the time I don’t know what I’m doing, or why. But I am most definitely evil. Muhahaha! Now who wants to try some of my unlabeled potions?

He’s evil and mad but severely restrained by the magics that contain him. A supernatural King Thorn on the loose would have very dire results on the general populace. It was kind of the theme for last year.
If anything he’s probably mellowed with imprisonment, enjoying his yearly romp as the boogie man and getting to blow people up without major repercussion.
But I’d never let him roam free. :p

Yeah, if you read the flavor text from the scavenger hunt last year, the Mad King was all sorts of evil. I ended up genuinely disliking the guy after all the things he did. Here are a few I remember.
- Poisoned his girlfriend’s horse causing it to trample her to death (her last memory was him smiling as she died)
- Tricked his rather decent older brother into being eaten by a giant spider.
- Assassinated his brother’s girlfriend when she saw through his lies.
- Beat his brother’s girlfriend’s servant to death so she couldn’t warn her of his plot to have her assassinated.
- Beheaded Lord Faren’s ancestor for (rightfully) accusing him of murdering his father
- Cut off the hands of all peasants accused of theft (accused of mind you, not guilty of)
- Kidnapped the father of an Istani princess, used that as blackmail to force her to marry him, and then killed her too.
- Put his next wife into a coffin filled with rats and dumped it in the sea.
- Put his son Edrick into a coffin while still alive and stuffed his mouth with candy corn.
And that’s just some of what we’ve learned so far. The guy is evil, and not in a wacky harmless Scarlet sort of way, legitimately evil.

And still, why he is bad? He is just having fun. Killing people isn’t that bad. I bet, in his head – they all deserved their faith and died in way they deserved.

No you don’t.
He isn’t aware of the fact that he’s evil. Nobody that’s evil is. He does things because he can, because he has the power to do them. He understands and understood that much.
To him, the world is a plaything. It’s people are fun little accessories to undress, take apart and put back together to his liking. He tried to do that last halloween, if you remember correctly, but found that these accessories can do a pretty good job of maintaining control over their realm.
The Mad King is crazy in a seemingly harmless way, but you’d do well to remember what happened to the people that didn’t laugh at his jokes, wanted to challenge his rule or were simply there during a bad mood.
The Mad King comes off to me as being like Sheogorath from the Elder Scrolls games. He’s a bit random and chaotic, and loves to keep things interesting.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
Last year during the scavenger hunt you learned he is crazy but very evil as well. I guess those that missed it last year really do not get to hear his story. It was pretty crazy.
Killing people isn’t that bad.
On this point we differ.
My best understanding of Mad King Thorn is that he’s what would happen if Caligula watched Nightmare Before Christmas and gained reality warping powers every Halloween.
So basically he’s the sort of evil that comes from being insane. Namely, he has absolutely no concept of right or wrong and lacks any empathy.

Sheogorath kind of can get away with it because he’s an actual god. Plus I kind of quit paying attention to much to the elder scrolls stuff after Shivering isles, I played skyrim but didn’t hold my interest or stick with me. It just seems like Sheogorath was just mad with violence just coming with it. MKT seems to be violent with madness coming with it.
