The Mask of the Night look ok but it does not look like a Halloween Mask.

im expecting Black flame skull or something like this… BUT THIS is so dissapoint………

It fits the mad king really, as it looks like something one would wear to a royal ball.

Mad King = King

Lunatic Court = his Nobles

Halloween = His ball

As a result, mask of night.

Plus, based on that screen shot, it appears the mask covers the entire face and gives it a porcelain doll look.

And personally, I’ve always found the dead stare of a porcelain doll creepier then kitten near everything else. Plus, creepy dolls are certainly no strangers to Halloween.

I already have a few ideas for a outfit to go with it for ranger, thief and mesmer.

My only concern is how will it fit charr……..not optimistic in that regard.

Yeah when I heard “Mask of the Night” I instantly jumped to Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera. Seriously thought it was going to be the Phantom’s mask with a name like that, but was rather disappointed to see that it was just a basic Mesmer mask.

It just looks very generic and as if it was something that was rushed really quick just so they’d have something to give out. It’s a very basic design with no special detail to it. It just looks like something that was cut from paper.

Just…. expected more really. I seriously hope it does something special at least like giving you glowing eyes or a weird effect. Cause if that is all it is, it’s rather disappointing.

I like it very much. Cannot wait to get that mask. Tastes differ.

If you want a creepy mask try that one Mesmer starter thing that looks like a devil.

I actually quite like it, and will almost definitely be getting one for my necro.

I think it has an interesting style to it, very much in the vein of a masquerade mask, and thankfully avoids the holiday item issue many MMOs fall prey too where the item so blatantly screams “I’m from Yearly Holiday X!” that you feel silly using it at any other time.

I agree that this mask doesn’t look halloween whatsoever. In fact, this mask and other very similar masks in the gem store are all very much the same, and imo plain boring. I just crinch at the thought what Anet could have done with these masks: we get better and more interesting and creative designs, Anet gets more sales through gems. Please Anet, make masks more compelling or don’t put them on the gem store at all.
Be creative, think out of the box, please oh please.

It reminded me of the Phantom of the Opera mask, which I suppose is still kind of in keeping with the Halloween spirit.

If you look closely, you can see that just before the hair line, the character’s skin color shows. So the mask covers the whole face.

Granted, it’s possible that’s due to the lighting but it looks very different to me.

No, sadly that’s just one of the human faces you can pick, which has those cat eyes and the mascara running down the face and black lipstick. If it wasn’t that’d at least make it somewhat better but unfortunately I highly doubt it. That mask is disheartening. Though, it wouldn’t surprise me if they added additional masks in the gem store that look a lot better either.

They could do also a male version with Guy Faweks face

Poorly realization, i really don’t like it.

While I agree the picture makes the mask look a little lackluster I think something interesting that could happen with it (but probably won’t) is if it changed from day to night similar to the AC weapons, though not necessarily gaining ghost fire. Maybe it makes you eyes glow at night and looks otherwise normal by day, something like that.

Such an effect would be befitting of the item name as week as sweetening the deal, so to speak for players earning the item. Sadly, in my I resent perception if the item I feel more inclined to throw it away after earning it than I do to keep it and add it to my stockpile of event exclusive items I don’t have the heart to delete off of my account.

Normal mesmer mask. I could think to wear those at time of the year. Really big dissapointment.

mmmm at first glance I also thought it looked like a porcelain doll but now I am not sure if that is the mask or if the character just has the face template with the gothlike make-up.
The eyes are strange though

The problem I see with this mask,

1. It doesn’t stand out, and I would have no idea that this was a Halloween mask.
2. These “Phantom of the Opera” masks already exist in the game, but in different variations
3. A festival mask should be universal to all races/classes, or at least designed towards such.

I will give everyone a comparison of a halloween mask from 2008, with the 2013.

(I personally think there are far better masks from GW1, but I chose the face paint one to give a better comparison.)

Even the Witch’s [Hat] from last year was universal, and wasn’t biased towards any proffession/race.

I’m still upset i accidentally deleted my witch’kitten from last year =(, i’d love to use that on my mesmer…

that being said are we sure this is the Halloween mask? If i’m not mistaken didn’t the patch notes say it was awarded for the first round of mad king says?

It doesn’t look particularly Halloween-themed in and of itself, but it still fits the general idea of dressing up in costume for Halloween. Not everyone dresses up as a ghost or a zombie or whatever, plenty just wear generic masks and dress in normal (albeit fancy) clothes.

That said… its given out by the MAD KING. A guy whose head is a giant smiling jack-o-lantern and who controls candy corn monsters and plastic novelty spiders. The Mad King should not be giving out normal mundane costume masks, he should be giving out silly, over-the-top Halloween themed items. Even the Witch Hat was kind of mundane for the Mad King, but at least it is a Halloween themed piece of gear.

If this was a Gem Store item or given out by one of the NPCs or something, then it’d be fine. But from the Mad King himself I would expect more. A Mad Moon mask comes to mind if we’re strictly looking at masks and something night-themed.

No copyrights unless you actually model them in the likeness of a particular representation of any of them that might still be copyrighted. The novels in which both vampires (dracula) and the frankenstein monster were initially based have become public domain long time ago, and the mummy and wolfman are based on legends that were never copyrighted in the first place (well, mummies do exist in real life, I mean mummies coming back to life).

I don’t even get into cosmetics and I agree that the mask sucks for a halloween item.

I totally agree that this was a horrible choice for a Halloween headgear piece. It’s much too plain and looks like a generic Mesmer mask. The Mad King should never give something this boring out to players.

Yet again, they’re short-changing the Necromancers. Normally I’m resigned to it, but this is our holiday. We should be receiving more necromancer-y things!

I agree. They need to understand that people want new equipment we can wear pretty much all the time and not all of these less practical items like town clothes and minis. The Blood Prince costume was another disappointment for me too.

I don’t understand why Necromancer players in particular aren’t more upset about being constantly neglected when it comes to new skins. Last year’s Halloween event was the last time they implemented something that looked really good for them. Yet Mesmers are ALWAYS getting cool masks and things like the Jubilee masks and the Phoenix armor set. (Elementalists have it even worse, but I don’t see how the Halloween event could help.)

They should give out a Halloween themed face paint skin or something. Maybe a Pumpkin Crown like GW1’s first Halloween did. Not this boring Mask of the Night.

Never mind Halloween that just doesn’t look good. Compare it to the baroque mask from the HoM and it looks like a cheap cardboard thing made from a cereal box.

If someone turned up at my door wearing that mask as a costume I’d think to myself “effort = nil”.

Well if Milton is to be believed, ANet could give him a potato for Wintersday and he’ll say “Perfect”.

Why do we only get masks and not full helmets?? Oh, and there are more Monarch Butterfly style masks even for warriors in TP. Mind Control symbolism sprayed all over it.

I think its about time that Anet stops adding the same style of masks over and over. Maybe its time for some masks that actually cover the entire face instead of just the eyes since there are already a million of those.

That’s one of the regular faces for humans, not the mask. The makeup you see is the goth face in character creation that gives those eyes.

I have that same concern but with asuras. How awful those queen jubilee masks looked.

I think they should just give us pumpkin masks, like in GW1. This just doesn’t feel very Halloweenish.

Lol that mask looks nothing like what we’re getting, I’m guessing the mask we are getting has more to do with the vampire dude than the Mad King/Halloween.
