I have to admit I had concerns about this whole adding family members/sidekicks etc. idea cause it has been done terrible most of the time in any movie, game film etc. But I have to say he was done really well IMO and the irony is they are both are crazy but each other thinks the other ones in the wrong.

Though I have to say for now I am disappointed outside of the Blood Prince for the most part with Halloween :/ I hoping it will really pick up with the 2nd part of it.

Well, there is Halloween every year. So part two could come next year (and I believe the live-stream about the History of Halloween basically said that they simply wanted to introduce him this year.

There is a 2nd part because you can not currently do the Mad King Says achievement. What else it might entail I do not know but with all the hype they gave us if this is indeed it, I don’t know what they were trying to hype about…

He’s certainly an interesting character, but he suffers the same flaws as Scarlet.

You don’t have a clue why he’s like that. Oswald was just positively insane, but Edrick isn’t, he just malicious because…. well, err, because he is.

Well, having a Mad King who kills his own wives for a father probably didn’t do well for Edrick’s psyche to begin with.

I actually am of the opinion that Edrick’s personality is a result of him growing up under such a mad, psychopathic father. We all know that Oswald frequently tortured and killed his subjects and wives according to his own mad whims (although there is indeed a method to the Mad King’s madness), and this probably taught Edrick the lesson that there is nothing wrong with violence and killing, resulting in him growing up with the belief that he was perfectly justified in using torture and murder to get what he wants.

The conversation between Edrick and Oswald about Henrietta also suggests that Edrick may have unconsciously suppressed some of his own memories about what happened in his youth, believing them to be his father’s acts instead of his own. I dare say that Edrick himself is mentally ill, although not in the way that his father wants. Oswald probably did his best to groom Edrick to be a proper successor according to his own twisted desires, but all he succeeding in doing was breaking Edrick’s sanity. (“You’re not MAD enough!” – apparently Oswald’s last words to Edrick before he locked him in the box)

I was very pleased by how well the voice actor sold the character.

I also find it plenty believable that his family life had a negative impact on his mental stability.

With or without the web short story, I was pleased with how the writing and acting we got for the Bloody Prince and the Mad King developed their characters and their relationship. For as little as the Bloody Prince actually does, we get a pretty clear picture of his upbringing, ambitions, personal struggles, etc.

I just wish there was more that actually happened. While the banter in the Mad Realm is entertaining and develops the Prince’s character, nothing actually happens there, which is hardly the struggle I expected from the build up to the release or, indeed, the impression left by the first story instance. The story arc opens, pauses for A Sweet Friend, then seems to realize it ran out of time on pause and has to end rather abruptly.

I’m looking forward to hearing about the Mad Wives in the future. I was initially wary about developing more concrete information about GW1 favorite Mad King Thorn, but the story around him in GW2 thus far has been nothing but entertaining. (Despite other difficulties with this year’s Halloween.)

I hope something happens with the Prince and King after the update tomorrow, a boss battle in the Labyrinth would be a good reason to go back there since there really isn’t a good reason to be there now…

Until relatively recently we knew next to nothing about Mad King Thorn either.

For many years GW1 had the same Halloween events over and over and all those told us was that he was the king of Kryta at some point, was killed by his subjects and sent to the Mad Realm and that once a year he’s able to return briefly, an opportunity which he used to play games with the people of Tyria and kill those who did badly.

They only began building on that in the last few years and we didn’t even know his name until GW2.

So I don’t think it’s surprising that we don’t know much about the Bloody Prince either yet, especially since he was written out of history by his father.

(By the way it’s a bit off topic but please tell me I’m not the only British person who keeps thinking of the bloody in Bloody Prince as a swear word rather than part of his title.)

Yah, I definitely agree with that. I absolutely LOVE the Mad King and Bloody Prince bickering in the Labyrinth, their banter is great (namely because the Mad King is such a great troll). It would have been nice to see a little more action to that end, though.

Tassi makes a big deal of how bad it would be to have the Bloody Prince and the Mad King both get into the “real world” and the amount of chaos and collateral damage their battle could cause if they did during the first story instance, and yet their interactions in the Labyrinth are just so… laid back. They insult each other and… that’s it. There’s no actual fighting between the two, and even their supposed “armies” don’t really fight that much. I mean, you will sometimes see skeletons fighting with candy corn elementals and such, but it feels like small skrimishes at best, not an all-out war.

Would have been nice to have more in-fighting between enemies, and maybe some battles between bosses as well. Giant Candy Corn Elemental vs giant Mummy or something would be fun to see. And of course, have the Mad King and Bloody Prince fight each other on occassion as well.

Things I will wait a year for:

  • Harry Potter Books/Movies
  • Lord of the Rings Movies
  • Reservations at an expensive restaurant
  • Atlus game translations

Things I won’t wait a year for:

  • Living story seasonal event plot continuation.
Finally I recalled the stopgap solution of a great princess who was told that the
peasants had no bread and who responded: “Let them eat brioche.”
