Synopsis of last Holoween event
The halloween event was done over the course of several stages, each lasting for few days (but everything on each stage remained available for the following ones).
First stage: there was a quest to collect the mad king memories, basically go to different places to interact with things or talk to NPCs to learn a bit about the mad king story when he was a alive. You got a back item as reward (a book). The fountain started cracking up and givins an eerie glow.
Second stage: gates started showing up in tyria, some gates just spawned enemies to fight or gave some candy, others created a portal to the mad king realm, a labyrinth with enemies to fight, and from there you can enter different activities (A MOBA style map, a PvP fight where you have to avoid being killed and become one of the killers when you do, the clock tower jumping puzzle). The fountain became even more cracked.
Third stage: Fountain explodes and a giant mad king thorn comes out of it and back inside (and does this from time to time). A mini dungeon became available where you fight the mad king for achievements and loot.
Fourth stage: Mad King is defeated, he now wanders around Lion’s Arch plaza in human size telling jokes and doing a sort of “simon says” game where you get a witch hat (town clothing) for participating, at this stage the mini dungeon isn’t accesible any more.
There were of course other things like pumpkins you could carve for achievements and things like that. The forums were mostly filled with complains about how little the event had to do in the first stage, the complains died out when second and third stage were released.

Thank you for the response. That sounds like a lot of fun. Who exactly is the mad King? Is he evil or is he kind of a comedic character?

A bit of both!
And last Halloween, let’s not forget the Mad King Clocktower Jumping Puzzle, the hardest JP in the game to date that will be making a return!
When he was alive King Thorn was a narcissist, a sadist, a psychopath, and extremely paranoid. he also had a dark sense of macabre humour that was always mixed with extreme cruelty. The player found this out as they collected information gathering his memories.
In the end, he became so bad that his subjects chopped off his head.
Death seems to have only intensified his personality quirks.
“I thought of a hilarious joke the other day about a sylvari who ran into a minotaur and…I don’t remember the rest, but I expect you to LAUGH!
Your Mad King says LAUGH!"
Good times.
Very interesting. Thank you all for filling me in. Reading about last years event as well as all of your responses has gotten me very excited for this year. I am looking forward to trying the jumping puzzle as well as how the story continues to play out.
That Halloween Jumping Puzzle drove me to despair last year, must have tried hundreds of times and failed, that said, I have no doubt I will be attempting the same if not more times this year!! Grrr, I will complete it!
Halloween festival was brilliant last year, loved it, so much to do!!

Think of a bad stand up comic serial killer.
He’ll kill you, bring you back, then share a drink and laugh over that one time you went “Help Help Help!” imitates you falling over dead

Mad King Thorn: Here’s a funny story. Recently, one of my vassals said to me, “Your Majesty! I can’t feel my legs!” And I replied, “Of course, you can’t, stubby. I cut your arms off!” And I had! (laugh)

It might have been in the second stage (could have been 3rd, can’t remember which), but a subsequent stage had you go to more places to continue the story, and it reward another back item (this time with flames), so you got two separate back items (though they were soulbound, but you could complete it on each character, if you wanted, so that they had the two back items).
I do miss most of the previous jokes he had though, cause iirc he had more new ones instead of more of the GW1 ones. Maybe he’ll have more this time.
Please give us a keyring…

The second one. Also that back item is useful because it works as a light source, so you can use it to navigate dark places like the WvW jumping puzzle.
