thought I was immune to the allure of tools
I may have gotten this but 800 gems is far too much for this kind of content. That’s like a monthly subscription and I don’t think that’s worth a month in subscription fees.
That thing is terrifying. I love seeing guild wars getting a bit darker.

They didn’t say that they bought it, they said that they may have been interested in buying it had it not been as expensive as it is, that had it been less expensive they’d have probably picked one up.
That is also in line with my feelings on the subject of Infinite Gathering Tools; I don’t mind “Soulbound on Use”, but at 800 Gems each…thanks, but no thanks. If they were 200 Gems each I’d be buying dozens of them. At 800 I won’t even be buying one.
Again, ArenaNet…people are more willing to make many smaller amount purchases over a single larger one, even if it ends up costing more in the long run. At 200 Gems each, I’d happily spend 6000 gems to outfit 10 characters with a single set of Infinite Gathering Tools, instead I’m spending no gems.
I’d also have no problem with buying additional versions of the infinite tools on each of those 10 characters when they are released or made available. I’d swap out to whichever I felt like using at the time. So also buying each variation of each Infinite Gathering Tool across 10 characters would really add up.

22,500 – # of Gems I’d spend @ 250 Gems per tool
ZERO – # of Gems I’ve spent and will ever spend on Infinite Tools that cost 800 Gems Each
And that’s just on Infinite Gathering Tools and not even getting into what would have been spent on pieces from a single set of Gem Armor had armor pieces been sold individually in the gem store instead of as full sets.

I wholeheartedly support what this guy said. Sick of seeing 800 gem items. Given that this thing is soulbound and i gather on more than one character there is not a chance in hell i’d pay this much for ONE tool for ONE character. Give us some lower priced options. I know you are in it for making money Anet and no one faults you for this but let’s make this more realistic. Volume Pricing > High Cost.
It’s an awesomely cool item but it’s not 800 gems cool.
For that sum of gems at the very least it should be accountbound and not soulbound.

Anet wants people to buy gems, period, they don’t care whether is with $ or gold.
Lots of people seem to have the idea that gems purchased with gold are free gems, that’s not the case. Not counting the time used to get the gold, gems might be free to you, but someone already paid for them, and Anet got their money (well, there might have been some free ones placed there at release to start the market).
Each gem you buy with gold means that someone previously bought it with real money and sold it for gold, which is why the price fluctuates so much (offer and demand, more people selling gems = price of gems goes down, more people buying them with gold = price goes up). From anet point of view is exactly the same, they already got the money from the gems in the first place.
They obviously benefit from people buying gems with real money, and they also benefit from people buying them with gold, since when you do that you keep the market alive and well, making it attractive for more people to buy gems with money to convert to gold, plus it serves as a gold sink (converting gold to gems and back again takes about 30% out of the economy).
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
I would buy this if I was allowed to change my sickle from my necromancer to another character, even if it was a one time transfer. Until Anet allow us to either do this, or makes the game more alt friendly, I will not be buying anymore of these items.
Or do something similar to what they do with the WvW leagues & skill points, & unbind our harvest tools everytime they release a next set.
What’s even more terrifying is the sound it makes. I love it. o.o
I’d probably have bought all of them if 800 gems unlocked each for my entire account. I bought zero though.
Not sure how you think all gold came from someone elses real money….A lot of gold was originally made by selling blues/greens to merchant and doing dungeon runs with gold find gear/consumables on. Tequatl runs give me 1g per event.
Say you can trade 4gold for 100 gems, that is 32gold for 800gems. I know a lot of people that spend that kind of money on a single weapon or a couple of armor pieces. That is also character (not account) bound. Here is a unique item that looks cool and is great to put on your farming character (my thief). You never have to purchase another orrichalcum sickle again! It practically pays for itself in omnomberries.
You all must be in the minority, because ~50% of the people I see farming with me in orr have one or more of the special effects scythe, sickle, or axe. If they were not selling well, I guarentee you that Anet would have lowered the prices on these items. As long as they see the demand, those prices will stay. However, for those willing to wait/gamble, you can still get items like this for 600gems during special sales.

I believe you may have misread and that person actually stated that all gems, not gold, that have been added to the initial launch supply have been purchased with real cash and sold for gold. So, other than the initial stockpile of gems available at launch, all gems added into the supply since then have been purchased with real cash and sold for gold. The amount of gems available in the supply affects the gold → gem and gem → gold conversion rates.

I am not making it up what I see. I do farm runs on 2 characters daily in one of the orr areas. About half the people I see mining the node im at or near seem to have one of these special picks. That is for me personally. I assume this area has more than other area due to the nodes and price of picks. If you really see 100% that don’t, great, but I doubt it. Either way, my point is people are buying them at this price point. If not, I’m sure Anet would have lowered the price of the version 2 tools. I have 2 mining picks, an axe, and 1 sickle. Three of the 4 were purchased for 600gems.
Sin Vec, yep misread that. Thought he was talking about gold used to purchase the gems…my bad.

I plan on getting one before it expires. 800 gems is a bit steep in my opinion. I’ve also had a lot of complaints from guildies because they bought the other tools and would like to change them to another toon but can not because soul bound.
Some lost sales there. 400 gems seems far more reasonable to me. 5 bucks.

800 gems is OK for this if bought in gold. We more gems for real money.
*Instead of 800 gems for 10 dollars US.
*Make it 1200 gems for 10 dollars. Can’t make it to much. Players can farm for the other 400 gems.
I would buy one if it let me unbind the tools I already have. I just can’t justify buying one when I already have the tools on my main. Now if I could take those tools off my main and put on one of my alts then I’d buy them. It would be nice if they sold a soulbound-to-accountbound converter for say 50 gems.
I do not make nearly enough gold in game to spend 44+g on 1 tool. I don’t even have that amount. I am simply bad at making and holding onto gold in this game.
Also semi related: I don’t mind spending real money at all on gems. But on a few items I feel like they are over priced a little. I will probably continue to buy 1 tool every release of new ones.
My only concern with this is If I give Molten pick to character X now, but Angel Pick comes out in a few months and it fits my character better, then I’d like to be able to swap these out and give molten to someone else, and the new one to character X.
Probably not a large concern for most.
I would love if they were account bound instead of soulbound. Suggestion: include an item that you can use to unbind a similar tool (“unbind sickle” if you are buying a sickle and so on) when you purchase one of these. This would allow players to move the previous to an alt and replace it while still keeping them soulbound.
Gosh individual armour pieces would be the best thing ever..
I’m glad I had 2 cloth characters to get the most out of the aether armour, but that was still a tough buy.
I think 800 gems is fine for unlimited usage harvesting tools. Hubby and I just bought the bone pick, hadn’t decided which characters to put them on… Although, with this one..necro, must…go…necro!
This one is definitely creepy and I’m sure it will fit a lot of peoples characters or just for fun. Its just nice to see stuff that isn’t the first 3 we had. Though I do think a large majority probably already bought the infinite ones from the sale/initially if they were going to pick them up.
As for the price I do feel its a bit steep for character bound. But 2 of the 3 I bought for my main came from gold to gems alone. I did spend real money to buy the last one. That said if you are planning on decking all your characters out in these I don’t think its worth the money. I think it may be priced more for people who don’t make a lot of alts. Hard to say what ANet is thinking other them “money.”
I may have gotten this but 800 gems is far too much for this kind of content. That’s like a monthly subscription and I don’t think that’s worth a month in subscription fees.

You do know that gold is generated by the system from nothing, right? It’s not a closed economy. That’s why there are so many gold sinks because they need to destroy the gold that is being generated. The gold you spend wasn’t introduced to the system from gems. The gold you spend stops existing, there isn’t some well where all the gold comes from/goes to and if everyone stopped spending any gold on anything it would eventually run dry.

That has nothing to do with his claim. His claim is that all gems enter the economy via real money exchange. Gems you buy with gold have already been bought with money and sold for gold.

I think the prices for some items should be reduced as well. Especially the harvesting tools. Having them soulbound onto one character is what keeps me from buying them. I have 6 characters, 5 of which are level 80 and I use them all. If they were cheaper or not soulbound I will gladly buy some of them. Until then I will use my gems for town clothing or mini pets :P

10 Characters
3 Infinite Tools Each
3 Variations of Each Tool (when made available)
18,000 – # of Gems I’d spend @ 200 Gems per tool
22,500 – # of Gems I’d spend @ 250 Gems per tool
ZERO – # of Gems I’ve spent and will ever spend on Infinite Tools that cost 800 Gems EachAnd that’s just on Infinite Gathering Tools and not even getting into what would have been spent on pieces from a single set of Gem Armor had armor pieces been sold individually in the gem store instead of as full sets.
99% of marketing is psychology.
Anet want people to buy gems with $ not gold. Your argument is invalid.
Gold is generated from nothing, but that was not my point, my point is that gems aren’t generated from nothing, each gem bought in the game with gold was ultimately paid by someone for real money. Anet doesn’t care whether you buy gems with gold or real money, from their point of view it’s just A: gem is purchased with money and B: gem is spent in the gem store, regardless of how many times that gem was exchange to and from gold in the meanwhile.
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
I may have gotten this but 800 gems is far too much for this kind of content. That’s like a monthly subscription and I don’t think that’s worth a month in subscription fees.
What you said is completely contradictory. If you bought it, it’s priced correctly. That’s how supply and demand works.
At 200 Gems each, I’d happily spend 6000 gems to outfits 10 characters with a single set of Infinite Gathering Tools, instead I’m spending no gems.
I’d also have no problem with buying additional versions of the infinite tools on each of those 10 characters when they are released or made available. I’d swap out to whichever I felt like using at the time. So also buying each variation of each Infinite Gathering Tool across 10 characters would really add up.

His argument is very valid. No where in there did he mention exchanging Gold for Gems (which is 5g per 100Gems, BTW).
I am tired of the insane Micro ‘Quality of Life’ Transactions. 800 gems is too much. They need to be between 250-400 gems per slot per character. No more. I’m with the above poster, at 800 gems I’m not buying it.
Cash to Gems or Gold to Gems. Time is money, in or out of the game. and the time it takes to earn 65g for ONE of these items is not worth the item itself.

You do realize that Anet/NCSoft generates the gems, yea?
So your point is nonsense.

Anet generates the gems, but the only way for them to end up in the user’s pocket is by money (either yours or someone else). Someone said earlier that Anet wants people to buy gems with money and not with gold (if that was the case, why allow to buy them with gold in the first place?) and my point is that they don’t care which way you buy them, they get the money either way.
Case 1: user buys gems with money:
Anet (generates and) sells 100 gems – User A buys 100 gems with $10
Total profit for Anet: $10.
Case 2: user buys gems with gold
Anet (generates and) sells 100 gems – User B buys 100 gems with $10 – User B exchanges 100 gems for 4g 10s (price from gw2spidy) – User A uses 5g 68s to buy 100 gems (without user B those 100 gems wouldn’t be on the market in the first place).
Total profit for Anet: $10
Extra bonus: 1g 58s removed from the game as a gold sink.
They only care for people to buy and use gems, not how they get them. People that buys them with money gives them the money directly, people that buys them with gold give an incentive for other people to give them more money for gems.

I saw that clown pop up in wvw staring at me from the bushes before they announced it, so I had no idea wtf was going on. ;x …was creepy.
Haven’t seen any of these ingame, and frankly hope I never do. Brrr.
I love the permanent tools and this one is just
0-O
sooo out there but in a good way
800 gems is fine by me but they need to make them account bound so we can swap them out- don’t have a necro but I like it for my mesmers
Morrigan: Yes 800 gems account bound would be fine with me as well. But they aren’t account bound, hence why I feel it’s a little pricey.
I realize not everyone feels this way though.
A few statements:
A. Gold is generated from time. People keep forgetting time is a currency. You invest time in the game, you make gold. The only way not to make gold through time is by either buying gold via gems or goldsellers, which both generate from real-life money, or from selling stuff on the trading post, from items you spent time getting, netting you money someone else previously acquired by spending time.
B. There’s absolutely nothing saying you need these tools on eight characters, so don’t even start with “AHMAGERD it costs NINETEEN THOUSAND GEMS to buy this!” Get an unlimited sickle, pick, and axe on one character that you farm with. That’s all you need. That’s 2400 gems, or 30 dollars or your regional equivalent.
C. The various tools are spread out with 1-2 months in between each. You’re not paying a lump sum of 30 dollars (unless you want to), you’re paying 10 dollars three times with plenty of time to get your allowance or pay check in between each.
D. It’s a convenience item. It’s designed to make sure you don’t need to run back and get a new X item. Don’t need it, don’t buy it. Again it comes back to time – you buy these to reduce your investment of time. It’s an exchange of your money to save your time. It’s not breaking the game, it’s not a must have. Don’t be afraid to pass on it.
E. The game has no subscription fee and is of equal or greater quality than existing pay-to-play model MMOs, most of which have a solid 15 dollar per month subscription. This item costs less than that. Think of it as a way to support the development of the game while at the same time giving yourself a bonus, as opposed to paying more in a subscription model without getting any bonus.
F. Yes, they really should be account-bound. Someone get on that.
If you are allergic to these ingredients, do not consume.
Speaking as someone who has already bought a previous harvesting tool for my main.
If they’re account bound, maybe buying it for the new skin alone would make sense. But as is? Fat chance.
(edited by Kaon.7192)
For Soulbound on use, 800 is simply too high. Either make it account bound, or a more reasonable price of 400-500 gems per tool.
I get supporting ArenaNet, but these bi-monthly updates at $10+ is pushing the generosity factor just a bit. Calm down with the time limited exclusives for a bit.
I have never bought any of these harvesting tools, and wont. 800gems is a bit much, add that to being soulbound & it’s absurd.
It is a bit expensive, but I think the animation of this item is the most complex and interesting they’ve come up with so far. It might be a bit of a stretch to be related to any of the passing lore as the past ones have been, but it really is a fun item.
My only suggestion is for them to change the skin of the actual held scythe the player holds when he uses the item. Right now it looks like the Consortium Harvesting Sickle. They should change it so it matches the Jack in the Box/Halloween theme. Maybe something as simple as changing it to look like the Scythe Staff skin.
