This is about the rewards that achievement points give.

I know that you need a certain amount of points to get a chest full of stuff but the question is: Why am I getting chests every day? Is it supposed to work like this?

yes you are supposed to get them everyday, since this just started the points are retoactive, so until your achievement points hit thier max you will get a chest everyday
