Just wanted to give a big thanks to everyone in the community in sanctum sprint who after winning the title are waiting at the finish line in first so someone else has a chance for the achievement and title. Speaks volumes about a community that has people willing to this and wanted you to know that that genorosity was repaid this morning when I had the race handily in first, and hope that keeps getting passed on!

I’ll second this, forgot the names of the kind players I met today but it was so good to see such a good attitude.

On a related note, how amazing it that race, so much better than Mario Kart.

Thirding, a real nice person who already got the title stopped right at the finish line in a 3 person race last night so I could get first.

Thank you!

Hate to be -that guy- and break the chain but I feel that it’s stupid to let someone just have something given to them, maybe I’m old fashioned but I feel if you yourself do not earn the achievement without having someone basically spoon feed it to you, you don’t deserve it. If they wanted everyone to have it then they’d award the achievement after finishing the race.

I agree with VinylScratch. People need to work to earn their achievement points. If they can’t get on their own then they just need to keep trying. It’s not that hard to get if you work at it for a bit.

This is making the title meaningless to those of us who actually earned it.

Exactly. I played three games and figured out the game and now place anywhere from first to third in 7+ player races. The mini game isn’t hard at all sadly no reason people can’t earn it. This isn’t World of Warcraft. Earn your stuff by trying instead of having it given.

It’s not easy for everyone. In some cases, not easy purely due to factors outside of their control like latency.

I don’t think it was meant to be easy for everyone, that’s why it’s not required for the meta event. That being said, I can certainly understand the frustration of not being able to get an achievement point. I personally am having trouble with some of the kite ones. But I will continue to try and work at it, and everyone should try and work at the things they struggle with so they can get better at it. This is a community event, I think it should be less competitive. A lot of people don’t enjoy having to fight other players to earn achievements. I completely respect that because there is no reason why someone should have to do this for a pve centric event.

If you want a title that is competitive, then play in PvP. Don’t sit here and complain on how win trading has destroyed your accomplishment.

I say there’s a bit of a difference between a jumping puzzle and the sanctum sprint. A jumping puzzle can usually be completed with enough time and patience.

Sanctum Sprint however can have people like yourself that consistently place 1st, preventing others from getting the title. That can be even more frustrating.

I’m glad that there are more positive people than negative ones in this thread… It’s not a matter of helping people achievement farm, or making the title less worthwhile, it’s a matter of recognizing that the difference between first and fifth in this minigame is a latency spike, a bad luck gale, or a good luck teleport. If someone gets in second, they could just have easily gotten first, so I’m glad to stop for them.

People did this for me (not specifically, though I happened to be the first person in one of the races that didn’t have it yet) late last night on Emhry. I made sure to wait in the next race before crossing while our facilitator made sure everyone had crossed. I came in last, but that’s perfectly fine with me. I got my completion and chest.

My reasoning follows an ends justify the means form of justification.

An old saying states: “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.”

Let’s analyze this into the situation at hand now. I can give someone a free win and they can have their title, I’ve essentially just given them a fish. But the next event that has a title earned by a similar criteria, they’ll have no idea what to do and require another handout.

I can also beat them and hinder their progress in hopes that in order to get what they want, they’ll look towards accepting trial and error, and the principle of failure leading to success. The odds of this are very rare however, most people nowadays will just ragequit and find the handout somewhere else. But that’s not an issue I induce, that’s more of a personality flaw on their part if they’re not willing to put in the effort to kick it up a notch when it’s necessary and would rather find the easier road.

However, some times, and it does happen, you get that one guy who you spark the fire inside of them and they take each failure as a lesson and eventually beat you and earn their title. Actually happened to me about four hours before I went to work today. I had raced a guy eight times in a row, he eventually beat me and sent me a whisper saying pretty much he just wanted to beat me so bad he looked for every shortcut and made sure to win sooner or later. It happened and I was actually happy for him.

The above paragraph is a factual account and an example of teaching a man to fish. He earned his title, and now with the next title he seeks, I’m more than certain he’s going to apply himself to finding every trick he can to secure his goal.

In the event it works, the end result definitely justifies my means. In the event they get upset and quit and view me as one of the world’s biggest pricks, ohh well. Like I care what a bunch of internet people think about me or my strange way of teaching people to push themselves on a game.

To Bluesoda and VinylScratch:

Sure, why dont you bottleneck your GW2 so your latency up to 200 – 300 ms (latency is not in player control, you may have 100 MBps connection, but due to kittenty ISP (multiple routing) your latency become higher and higher). Can you get number 1 easily ?

I rather have another kind of PvP than free for all (with more than 6 player) PvP.

This is making the title meaningless to those of us who actually earned it.

It’s kinda like a professional athlete showing up to a friendly pick-up match, beating the pants off everyone, and then getting upset when everyone leaves.
Lets look at reality here. As much as we would like to believe that everyone playing Guild Wars 2 is is equal, the truth is we aren’t. People on the other end of the connection are dealing with all sorts of variables that make playing competitively much more difficult.

Lag, disabilities, computer speed, skill, time, desire, and even age are just a few of the factors that determine a players ability to compete in PvP type games. Guild Wars 2 doesn’t group people based on any factors, so its quite common for highly skilled players to be paired up with varying degrees of other players.

This is why taking PvP games such as this seriously, to the point of denying others of a win, is selfish and short sighted.

I understand the OP’s desire for a competitive and fair game, and in a perfect world ANet would design these games in a way that allowed fair matching, but until that happens, constantly winning despite having the achievement is not being gracious or considerate.

So, to the OP. Perhaps try to empathize with what situations other players may be facing, and consider what might be different for them if you weren’t in the race. Would that player with a bit of lag, older PC, or physical disability be able to win on their own?

Vinyl, this game is not real life, get over your self.

There is nothing wrong with giving a hand. It’s in our human nature for us to want to help out others that are struggling. Now if you don’t want to do so, that’s fine, but don’t go around telling people that they shouldn’t do that because that’s not your way of doing things.

But luckily for us, there are more gracious people out there in this world, and less of your kind, thank goodness.

Why is everybody taking this so seriously?
It is just a game. If people want to “give the man a fish”, who the hell cares? It is just a temporary mini game in a virtual world. It is not something life-changing like the old saying states. At all.
People are trying to have fun, not to learn a lesson for their lives. Besides, a lot of people know exactly how to play the game and would beat everybody in every single race if it wasn’t for latency, so let’s not talk about “teaching lessons” when people are not getting a fair ground for it to begin with.
For many people, it is not about learning to play, but about living in the other side of the planet or having bad internet connection or not being able to afford a better computer.
“Teaching them how to fish” would be bringing them all to America or Europe, giving them a brand new computer with an awesome and stable internet connection, THEN beating them over and over until they “learn to play”.
Being in South America, I have problems with latency (Third world problems, who cares right?). On the few times that I got to the finishing line before everybody else it was because I was lucky, not because I was good. If I want to throw a tea party at the finishing line and wait for the people that are coming right after me so that they can cross the line and get the achievement, that’s what I will do, because I know exactly how it is to have problems with latency.

The fish analogy is perfectly fitting … when teaching a child to walk or how to tie shoelaces, how to complete homework assignments or take tests, how to drive a car, etc. … and i will agree 100% that such things cannot constantly be performed for the other person because they need to learn to be able to do such things for themselves. It’s part of their development into independent, fully-functional adults.

However, I think it also fair to bear in mind that this is a game, generally played for entertainment. While I understand some people find competition enjoyable, and even thrive on it, I think there are at least an equal number of people who log on just to kick back and relax at the end of a day in which they’ve already spent hours pushing themselves to prove themselves better than their peers to receive promotions, raises, and achievements of true, real life value.

I’ve often found it odd, when reading some of these posts, that so many seem to believe that snagging first place time and time and time again actually proves anything about themselves, other than that they’ve beaten other people at a video game race time and time and time again? Is it really that much of a rush and does it make you feel like you’re that much better a person for it? Or would you feel better about yourself and with yourself if you saw someone struggling to even complete the race, much less place first, and you lent a hand with your expertise?

There is not a winning lotto ticket at the top of the mountain. There isn’t a corner office, or a CEO title, free mortgage payments for a year, a cure for your child’s disease, or anything even remotely of real value. And before the rush of “don’t tell me what’s worth my time/what right do you have to tell me what should be important”, c’mon, really? If you’ve gotten first place once, you’ve gotten the title already, is there a point really to winning it over and over and over?

Don’t bother with BlueSoda and VinylScratch. Those people have been explained many times what this mini game was like for people outside the US and/or with high lattency : basically you just fall every other jump for absolutely no reason. It’s not a slight disadvantage, it’s a gigantic one that makes it impossible for those people to get the achievement in normal conditions. So stop being idiots repeating that people needs to train to compete with you. Fortunately most people who can play in normal conditions know they are being lucky and that’s why they want to help others. Big thanks to them

Regarding teaching people to fish, and giving people fish. I just don’t think that situation really applies here. It’s not a life or death thing. Being good/lucky enough to finish first in this minigame isn’t going to really change anything for them. In all likelyhood, once this event is over, we won’t see a similar event for another year.

Sure, there will be the occasional person who will keep hammering themselves against the race to get better and win. Those people are going to do that anyway, regardless of what you’re doing. Someone gave me a win, and I kept playing anyway just to get better and win on my own terms. (And then I wait at the line to hand that win to someone else).

Thing is, not everyone is like that. Not everyone who plays GW2 will have enough spare time to get good enough at the game. Or get good enough to overcome other problems like latency or bad luck. Fact of the matter is, some people will just not be very good at fishing. They may never get good at fishing, no matter how much you try to “teach” them. (You are actually trying to teach them, right? Just coming in first doesn’t really teach them anything. If you offer advice how to beat you, then that would count as teaching.)

Really though, we live in a society. And in that society, some people are good at fishing, and some are good at hunting. And usually those two groups help each other out. Just because it’s called a PVP zone, doesn’t necessarily mean the competition can’t be a bit more light-hearted and mutually beneficial.

Honestly just as there is no problem with choosing to take the win yourself, there is also no problem with standing by and letting others win. The person who gets to the finish line first gets to choose what to do with that victory. Noone else. If they want to pass it to the next competitor to make it, good for them. If they want to take the victory them self, good for them.

To players complaining about winners winning, just leave that match and find another more conducive.

I like seeing the community doing something nice for others. Reminds me of Children’s Week in WoW where they had several needed events in the Battlegrounds for the title achievement. They would literally allow players on both sides to complete the task for the credit.

I think I might ask if I can come in first, just once. For the achievement and nothing else. I won’t play the race any differently, so it’s not like I’ll drag my feet just because. I just have to hope the game servers won’t be an issue.

It’s not spamming. It’s posting in both places to say that it’s fine to play as you see fit.

Agree. Nobody says you have to do this since it IS a race, but to those who do, thanks! The #1 in our group would wait so someone who hadn’t gotten the 1st place achievement could so now Eredon Terrace is officially my favourite server to guest

It’s like the Mad King tower where I spent a few hours doing nothing but helping people learn how to finish, and if I was the only one left midway, I’d jump off so they didn’t have to wait. People want to be nice, so let them! I know I’ll wait so others can too if they ask, otherwise I’m crossing that line if I’m first for personal points

I don’t agree. I came in a little late last game, the game had started about 20 seconds so they all had a big lead on me, i still ended up on first place and didn’t get teleport power up once, I was lucky and got Aspect Master 3 times though, but still, i couldn’t see them before we were at third of fourth checkpoint.

This is what we get for creating an ‘everyone wins’ society. Everyone wants the achievement points, so they can have the skins and feel good. If someone says ‘earn it then’, they will come up with an excuse as to why they cannot. They do this because someone will inevitably believe the excuse and do whatever it takes to get that person the win.

Also, to those who claim ‘this is an MMO, not real life’, you probably do this in real life too. Math homework too hard? Have someone else do it for you, after all a failing grade would make you feel bad! And no one can ever feel bad, or be left out…because that would be mean!

There is a reason that a first place achievement exists. Not everyone is supposed to get it, otherwise it loses all meaning. Its black and white, earn it or do not. If your ISP is horrible or you live on the moon or your PC has the power of a microwave, go complain to someone who cares.

tldr; expecting others to compromise to your views and chastising them when they do not is bullying, no matter if you think what you are doing is ‘for the good of others’.

Actually, if you finish having used Light Speed, you don’t get the achievement. I had this happen – used two of em, took first, it said I had second, presumably due to having lost 10 points (two checkpoints)

Actually, if you finish having used Light Speed, you don’t get the achievement. I had this happen – used two of em, took first, it said I had second, presumably due to having lost 10 points (two checkpoints)

That wasn’t due to having used Light Speed. That was due to someone else still beating you. Some win then immediately leave so it can be hard to tell, but using Light Speed does not invalidate wins.

tldr; expecting others to compromise to your views and chastising them when they do not is bullying, no matter if you think what you are doing is ‘for the good of others’.

That goes both ways, Gote. If I choose to abdicate my victory, I should not be berated for it. If someone chooses to take their victory, they should not be berated for it either.

Technically, the mini-game is competitive and PvP. Technically, we should take our win. But if people instead want to work together then there is nothing wrong with that.

Just as we shouldn’t force you to abdicate your victories, so too should you not force us to act as you want us to. The achievement is only what you make of it. You want to get it entirely of getting first of your own volition? More power to you. Some, however, don’t care about that and just want completion. More power to them as well.

TL;DR: You do your thing and let others do theirs.

Careful when making these kind of assumptions about people, dear. I don’t think the world works that way.

Also, it is very rude of you to talk like that about the night crew that keeps most of the servers alive in WvW. I see that Oceanic players are only good for keeping our towers while we are asleep, right? When they want the same rewards that we can get but they have no chance to compete with players from the USA (or hell, even with players from South America, like me), we shouldn’t care about them, right?

Yes, they shouldn’t be rude to you if you are winning, but you are not being a nice person right now and I don’t think you deserve kindness or respect after saying all these things. At all.

Hate to be -that guy- and break the chain but I feel that it’s stupid to let someone just have something given to them, maybe I’m old fashioned b

May be you are the one i have seen yesterday?
He was very good and he apparently enjoyed to place fals-items on strategic points, where you have to go through so people was kicked down, ported back an so on. He won 5 races in line, after that i leaved the group. I had my achivement allready, so i just done the race for fun but it wasn’t fun anymore. guy like he are the most disgusting typ of players.

Someone was waiting and watching – I only had 165 points.

It’s not exactly easy to test this

Nice to see you guys have had some luck and nice to know there are some good people out there. I have a lot of latency issues in the event so winning is near impossible for me unless someone hands it to me. But all Im seeing is the same people winning every single time.

Again, go complain to ArenaNet about your latency issues. The achievement was created independent of such things, and it should not be diminished because of external circumstances.

Of course you would not think I deserve kindness or respect as I do not agree with your view. The thing is, I really do not want your respect unless it is because I beat you. I will of course give you my respect if you beat me. That is how its should work.

Also, you keep most of the servers ‘alive’ in WvWvW because of a timezone difference, how does that relate to skill in this particular race? Also, by saying you keep them alive implies that the day players are so bad as to be inconsequential. A bit insulting, don’t you think?

If they wanted everyone to have it then they’d award the achievement after finishing the race.

Hur hur I’m gonna go on a forum and pretend like I’m a kitten. No one cares about your opinion, the thread is simply thanking other players who are nice enough to let some win. I wonder how many of the people get the achievement this way really care if they “deserve” it. I would bet not many as a bunch of players are probably just relieved to have finally finished it and can move on to something else.

Alright, Gotejjeken, you should read my post again.
I’m not an oceanic player, I’m in South America and our time zones are not that different from yours, if you are in the USA, so I am not part of the night crew.
It is not because your opinion is different that I do not think that you deserve kindness or respect, it is because you were rude and disrespectful in your post to begin with, and we can only get what we give.
I have very few latency issues and I got my achievement with my own effort. Nobody let me win, but just because I am lucky enough to not having these problems, it doesn’t mean I should ignore those that are not.
I never said that it relates to skill in the race in any way. What I am saying is that it is ok if they are helping us getting the bonuses from WvW (if you do not know, your server gets you bonuses. Press B to see which bonuses they got for you), but it is not ok to help them getting achievements? Please.
And I am not implying that the day players are bad in any way, just that they are humans and have to sleep, and when they are asleep someone else has to fight, and that’s when the Oceanic players are awake.
Quite frankly I can’t see how can you possible come to any of these conclusions. I’m not sure if my English is so bad that I can’t explain what I am trying to say properly or if you just ignore everything I say and make up your own stuff.

I don’t need to see my name in first place to know that I won. It’s very odd to see people seeking validation from a video game. I don’t expect anyone else to wait but when they so it restores my faith in people.

As I posted originally I actually did win first without someone letting me this morning, but abdicated that victory because someone else had done the same for me with me being a close 2nd. Done the race several times and can finish first quite a bit, I just like the idea of helping others out in a temporary mini game, trust me in structured pvp…not that nice

There is nothing wrong. What the OP did was trying to encourage people to be nice.
But apparently, there will be people who put this waaaaaaaaaaaaay in their competitive heads.
You need to realize that people have different goals: get achievement, get the title, enjoy the race, or just loot chest.
Calm down and talk to others. If you don’t like current groups’ goals, just leave and rejoin another race. It’s that simple. I don’t get why some people have to talk bad about others.

But there’s one kind that is absolutely evil. Also mentioned in the above post: some pro-athlete join a friendly match. That’s not all: I encountered the one that refused to leave the friendly-match group, so everyone left in the end. It wasn’t nice at all, just kitten-bag move. Basically just taking advantage of nice people. Best of all when we ask why couldn’t he rejoin other race:

He replied, “I lose silver.” (dunno what to say)

This isn’t a permanent content, some of us won’t have forever luck to get to the first place.
If you think the title will be meaningless for you, well…… that’s just you. Just like someone whining about twilight being too common, a matter of time.
Don’t know what more I can say to make my point clearer.

For me, I did want to earn it myself. When someone stopped at the finish line and I got the title like that, I felt like I couldn’t warrant actually using the title since I hadn’t actually earned it.

However, several races later when I had gotten better at the game (using Grounded well, not using #3 skill when about to be shocked, knowing the route better, etc.), I finally managed to just pull ahead and arrived at the finish line first. I decided, since some people care about things in different ways, I didn’t mind stopping, and I let others take the top 3. I mostly just wanted to prove to myself that I could earn it, so that it’d be fair for me to actually use the title I’d been awarded.

I feel like the game is a little too luck-heavy to be stressing too much over competitiveness of the game. It’s just meant as a fun mini-game, not something to stress over. I don’t mean Time Warp so much, since it mostly shows up when you’re hopelessly far behind anyway, but it’s not hard for a small error, a(n unintentionally) well-timed lightning bolt or so forth to knock you onto a cliff, costing you seconds to respawn and putting you as much as 15-20 seconds back from where you fell off the course.

I agree that those who don’t want to stop at the finish line shouldn’t be overly hounded about it. There’s no obligation. However, to get in a big fight about those who do wish to stop for others strikes me as needlessly petty. As titles go, it’s not one that was going to shock and awe anyone to see it on another character. And as far as I’ve been able to tell, the reward at the end of the race doesn’t scale to placing, so they’re getting nothing else out of it. Let them play as they wish to play.

What’s the point of playing the game if you just get everything handed to you?

You obviously dont get it Bluesoda so I am going to spell it out to you VERY plainly. Not everyone can “earn” that achievement because not everyone is sitting next to the server like you. Those of us who are oceanic find this mini-game impossible with all the rubber banding so hear me finally when I say, helping others is never bad, especially those who have terrible ping rates. Me being in Australia the closest I have ever come and this is in 35 games is 5th. My latency makes it Impossible. I know many many others who are very thank full to those willing to help and you can say all you like that I didn’t “earn” it but its too bad. You can whine and complain that other people are getting shiny things that you had to :“laugh”: work for, but in the end it is a true testament to those who do hold back at the finish line as they understand not all of us can actually do the run. We can not improve our ping rates, we cannot work to make it better.

I have let people come in first a few times now. I know I’ve earned my achievement, and if others get first and do the same thing they’ve basically earned it as well. Sure this is “PvP” but its trivial. It’s a mini game. If they wanted it to be that kind of PvP they would have made it 1st to 3rd only rewards and they wouldn’t have put in the light travel, because there are 2 places on the track if you hit light travel you can go from 7th to 1st in no problem so might as well take that out.

So to those who have let others pass just because, your all awesome people. To those who think you need to “earn” your “title”. Your in the wrong place, because titles for the most part are not hard to get.

Besides, unless you have “God walking amongst mere mortals” or any of that title track personally, your not impressing anyone with your “elite status”.

Remember, everyone.

Just as we should be allowed to abdicate our victories, so too should they take their victories if they so choose. It’s not a right to get the achievement, after all.
