…when I hit one make my eye twitch and someone screams in the distance. 2nd best reason to be in 1st place just not to deal with them!

1st one to the fake power-up can almost always win if they know the race. I try to save a ground if I’m in 2nd, 3rd, 4th. If you get the first one you can drop a few in a row and more or less take your time to the end just by making sure you always go to the bags that drop them. Their AOE is a bit large IMO and if they are dropped in a bottle neck/landing pad unless you are lucky and have a ground on you, you will get slapped in the face with a fake.

Putting them on landing pads is kind of bad, true. Bottlenecks shouldn’t be a problem though. “Grounded” lets you walk right through them, and is not in short supply. I mean no disrespect, but if you haven’t run enough to recognize which crystals are supposed to be there, then you can’t say you’ve earned the right to place first anyway.

Truthfully though, the race is pretty much decided in the first 30 seconds anyway, regardless of fake powerups. Make sure you get aspect master three or four times and make use of sun crystals, and you should be well on the way to winning.

Oh I know where they are and I know how to counter them with ground. I even mentioned that in the line you quoted. The grounds do work but if you are unlucky or have used it to avoid being hit by lightning then you are going to have to take one in the face. Or if someone is in 1st dropped one and someone in second dropped 1 also and used ground to avoid the 1st one the person in 3rd just eats one of the two.

I’ve had plenty of 1st place finishes and I’ve waited at the line for even more to finish 1st. Thanks for assuming I was a nimrod unworthy getting first. :P

Slow and steady wins the race… sometimes. Light Travel is a powerful weapon when used correctly. Possible to go from 12th place to 1st with them once you reach the first one. So the Turtle can actually win the Sprint. :s

Have to agree on the slow and steady. number of times now I’m started out in 9th by the first checkpoint (no idea how people can make a huge distance just by running) but if I go at a steady pace and avoid slip ups I can find myself in 2nd or 3rd by the 3/4 mark just because people fall or mess up and get thrown behind me.

It’s actually kind of funny if you purposefully start out the race slow. Just pick up a bunch of powerups. Then after the first checkpoint, pick up more till you get a light speed. Then you wait till the 3rd checkpoint, and boom, you’re miles ahead of everyone.

Of course, that only works if the pack was all pretty close together. I’ve seen some races where there’s 5 people all way in the back, seemingly not knowing that they can use their dashes to keep up with everyone else.

Now that I’ve gotten the 1st-place finish achievement, and the Quartz node as well, I only ‘race’ for the rewards at the end. As such, I typically just lackadaisy along toward the back of the group, only using powers when it’s necessary.

I still end up in 6th or 7th place pretty regularly. I’ve even taken 4th like this, somehow, and if I get so much as a passing fancy to get into the lead, I can still manage to place, simply because people fall all the time.

Come to think of it, pretty sure I was running with Meriem for a while – she’s no slouch, usually doing fairly well, as I recall.

As for Fake Powerups? The issues with them, I think, are mostly that they’ve got a huge trigger radius. I can generally identify them, having run plenty of races, but the areas they’re most commonly placed in are narrow enough that they seem to trigger no matter where you go – or they’re in bottlenecks. Point being, they’re less often placed to surprise the unwary and more often placed to bite the next person along.

I (almost) laugh when I run into them. It’s good sport.
