I think its possible without mesmer, I did this alone:

It is impossible without mesmer because u have only 10 charges of jumps\etc

The first time I made it I definitely had to use my mesmer to portal myself and refill my charges, but I did a lot of legwork and eventually made it with just a single set of charges without a portal. Someone else made it up too and put a video in this thread:
