It’s the chain I beat you with until you
recognize my command!”
So I was looking through rings on the TP and I found a masterwork (green) ring listed for 40g. It added +15 precision and had an embellished jewel in. I think it was lvl 35. It was just called “ring”. Why is the ring so expensive? Did someone just list it that high for for the lulz? Or is it that sought after?
Things like that ring confuse me so much. There are many items with outrageously high sell prices as well as corresponding buy orders where there do not seem to be any logical reasons to justify such a price or the amount of demand for them.
This staff dropped for me yesterday.
It is a Masterwork Level 20 Malign Glyphic Staff of Force
The lowest sell orders at the time were 1g 88s, with buy orders of 93s.
Buy orders have since gone up over 1g for it.
There is nothing about this staff to justify the price.
Unless there’s some exploit with it that I am unaware of that makes it in high demand.
I listed mine for 1g 50s and it sold in about an hour.

The basis for most of these probably comes down to low supply. A lot of players will automatically salvage/forge/merchant a lower level item like these, since they know level 80’s wont care and assume there is little to no demand in the lower levels. Additionally, if you have the ONLY copy of an item on the TP, you can set it anything you want. I’m sure some people, in that situation, try and see how much they can get, leading to starting values at 40g or whatever. And even if someone undercuts them, they could knock 20% off and still be over 30g. Finally you have players with disposable income leveling alts, who want the best gear at any given point. This is probably most notable at certain tiers (level 2 items for fresh characters, level 20 items for experience ticket characters, and whenever rares become available), but it can be felt throughout the levels (though I suspect ecto’s in rares+ at 68+ complicate things). This is probably doesn’t explain the ring, but it might explain the staff.
It’s probably the precision stats on it. The half eaten weapons which have precision on them are also high priced. I got one once, sold it for a gold then asked on the forum. iirc, the answer was that those stats work really well on upleveled chars in WvW.
Don’t know about the ring, but you could make or buy a crafted staff a lot cheaper, including the sigil.
Crafted rings at that level only have +10 stats. Perhaps that’s the reason?
I can see that, but even those items that are listed For so high I cant see ever selling. Unless you were richie rich and had nothing else to do or buy, there are still much better items for much cheaper that cam be bought.
Nope its totaly different story:-) I used this strategy in Lineage 2 long time ago and made fortune on it. It works purely on theory of chaos what presume if you have group of people large enough some small part of them everytime starts react outside of classic rules or logic.
Simply there is always someone dumb enough to buy it only because its so expensive or it has unique name for example you can see it in real world all the time.
Hmm interesting. But with a low stat item, not even a cool skin with the name simply “ring”, I suppose there is someone dumb enough to buy it.
There are about a dozen non-exotic, non-max items that sell for amounts that don’t make any economic sense. There are also max items that fit this category.
My favorite is Sam, an exotic accessory with zerker stats. [&AgGDtQAA] It comes with a rare upgrade, Embellished Brilliant Opal Jewel.
This named item has the same stats as the crafted zerker earring Orichalcum Earring of the Berserker. [&AgGTNAAA]. It comes with an exotic upgrade, Exquisite Ruby Jewel.
You cannot buy Sam for less than 30 gold. You cannot spend more than 5 gold to get the generic.
No one can see which of the two you are using. And yet… people are willing to spend over six times as much to get Sam.
Does it make economic sense? Of course not.
Still, the buyer will be very happy they have their “Sam” and you can be very happy with the coin they are willing to part with.
Items with uncommon names and appearances and of limited availability become a kind of collector’s item over time. You’d probably see the same sort of thing when dealing with items that have a typo in their name.
With regards to Sam, I’m guessing it’s for players who really, really, REALLY like the idea of wearing a rabbit as an earring. XD
Maybe Sam just perches on your shoulder…like a long-eared, carrot-eating parrot?
And here I always thought Ulgoth’s Tail ranked high on the ‘Ridiculous Earring’ category.
… Now I kinda wish that different accessories/rings/amulets were visible on your character. XD
how about as a medium of gold selling ?
how about as a medium of gold selling ?
bingo.
These unique, rare items are used as currency. Since they rarely drop, this currency can be controlled by a select few players. And only those who have knowledge of the transaction would consider buying the item.
You could call it gold laundering.
E.g. Let’s say I’m a gold selling company and I want to transfer my dirty gold from my bot account to good gold on my main account.
My main account then lists a rare item XYZ for 100g, which I would then purchase with my bot account. The gold gets transferred from dirty into good, and then the bot account transfers back XYZ through other means. Rinse and repeat.
the 15% fee would hurt, but I presume this is the cost of laundering.
