700 gems each halloween costumes.. too much
700 gems is under $10, same as the old game. Buying gems doesn’t make sense unless you are making a killing on the trading post, but then if you are you probably wouldn’t give 2 bits about the 700 gems.
The kicker is that they aren’t even armor skins. That’s what’s saving me lots of gems.
Not really going to happen for one good reason. Ncsoft wants money so to give free players the options to get gem was nice but it was only going to get to the point where it was going to be highly priced later on.
Really they have to make a down side to it so it would not ruin their way to get money from people who would or may never spend extra money on the game. So you farm or give money only choices.
The bottom line is not to buy useless cosmetics. Maybe I don’t get it, but what a waste of any money/gems as well as the time it takes to earn them in game.
However if people are willing to spend, Nsoft will sell.
While I would love the cost to be less (who wouldn’t), the larger issue for me is still where to store all of them?
A larger crime for me is that I pay for these skins but can only use them in town. Some of them are really fantastic. Especially for my necro. I suppose some of them would look rather silly in the open / wvw world but I would be fine with it.
I’m totally not the target demographic for these costumes but for $10 you could probably get a better costume in real life from thrift store rags(which is what these ‘costumes’ look like).
iirc, in Guild Wars 1 the costumes were $10, with no option to buy using ingame money.
Of course they weren’t quite the same, you could use them in combat, one purchase was good for any number of alts to wear simultaneously, there was a storage system (an NPC who held all of them for you. You ask him for one and get it. Wear it till you tired of it then destroyed it. Rinse and repeat). So the Guild Wars 2 town clothes are less value for their money which is why I haven’t even bought one and probably never will.
I’m on the fence about whether I like the style of the new costumes, but that’s just a personal preference. Mad King and Witch are as cool as they ever were.
As of right now, each of these costumes essentially costs you 42 gold and 50 silvers each , you used to be able to grab the infinite molten pick at a cost of 800 gems for 27 gold , and the pick actually has an use.
Wasn’t sure what they’d cost, so I put in enough gold for 800 gems last week, in preparation for the costumes. (I’ll find something else to spend that 100 on, rest assured.) You might think they’re useless, but, dangit, I love costume brawl and I enjoy having town clothes that I can switch into at the press of a button. (Swapping is hotkeyable.) They’re way more useful to me in providing enjoyment than the infinite use tools are. It’s a large part of my banked gold, but the only thing I could spend that gold on that I’d enjoy nearly as much is another character slot; it’s not like I’m saving it for fancier weapons or anything.
The economy’s changed. You shouldn’t expect the gold→gem exchange rate to stay the same, especially after people have made so much gold since Flame & Frost with the addition of champ trains and clockwork invasions.

Reminder that if a person enjoys cosmetic items, they’re hardly useless. So long as I enjoy the time I spend earning that gold, and enjoy a costume more than I’d enjoy whatever else I’d spend it on, I’m having a good time.

They seem to be thinking about this issue, because the new costumes are a weapon, a hat, and one chest piece that overrides gloves, pants, and boots. I’m a little disappointed that I can’t mix pieces with default town clothes or other costumes, but, dang, that is easier to store. Considering characters don’t start with a hat or toy, you’re really only left with their default shirt to store while you’re wearing the costume, assuming you’re not piling a bunch of costumes onto one character.

I wish this were true in GW2 it would make that near 10 dollar purchase more worth the money.
Agree with the OP. I saw the costumes, they were rather nice. So i wanted to buy them, thinking it would be about 30g or so. Then i noticed that 30g gave me a bit more than 400 gems…
Price is fine in theory, but the conversion gems/gold is way too high and there should be a maximum.
I am hesitant to post about this but here goes anyways.
You aren’t meant to be able to buy everything in game with gold. While a lot of players would much rather spend gold than rl money just realize that it’s a bad conversion for a reason.
