Q:

So there you are, diligently farming the needed mats to get you to that perfect number of 400 with your respected profession. Knowing that making specific items might only make you a 50 silver a pop, but, with the hopes that the 50 silver would possibly turn into gold at one point. Your total expense in mats before selling is 10g50s. You attempt to sell at under lowest seller with a nice profit if it sells. But you see the massive “Chunk” of 5% they take out of your hard work.

So I get it. It’s a free to play game. So we either make gold to buy the gems, or trade gold for gems. But to buy items we get taxed 10% and then to sell them we get taxed 5% for a whopping 15%…. Why so high. It’s obvious that there needs to be a %, but not so high. The answer can’t be to control the true Gold Farmer ”s”… They can’t be controlled. With “qwertyuiop1, qwertyuiop2, qwertyuiop3, qwertyuiop4, and qwertyuiop5” Hunters running a group botting an area that you have reported and there still doing it. So can’t stop them.
Why does the % have to be so high?

It’s a gold sink.

If players constantly earn gold and don’t spend it then the prices of everything rise.

Not just max level gear, most lower level characters will be alts so they can afford the new prices too.

And then what happens to the new player? Unable to afford anything on the TP he is limited to loot & vendors until he has farmed enough to catch up with the rampant inflation.

Jestunhi, your so right…..it seems GW2 is looking for the $ setting the a.k.a. “Farmers” up for success and the Hardcore to Noob up to grind it out for a couple silver.

Just a couple facts:

Fees

There are two Trading Post fees, both paid by the seller; they total up to 15% of the total sales price.

A non-refundable listing fee of 5% (minimum 1 Copper coin); this is paid when you post and is not returned if you remove the order.
A 10% tax on successful sales; this is deducted from the amount available to the seller at pickup.

For example, if you offer an item for 1 Silver coin, you will pay 5 Copper coin to list and find 90 Copper coin at pickup after someone purchases it, i.e. net proceeds will total 85 Copper coin.
[edit] Fee notes

Both fees are shown before you press the submit button, however the total shows the gross total, not net profit.
Both fees are mathematically rounded, i.e. fractions less than one-half a coin are rounded down; fractions above that are rounded up.

Rounding examples

Selling one item for 29 Copper coin should generate a 1.45 Copper coin listing fee; you pay 1 Copper coin instead.
Selling another item for 31 Copper coin costs 2 Copper coin, i.e. rounded up from 1.55 Copper coin.

[edit] Losing potential earnings

Be careful not to list for so little that you would take home less than you would get by selling the item to a vendor, i.e. never sell for less than ~20% more than the item’s value. For example:

An item of 88 Copper coin can be sold on the trading post for 89 Copper coin, but this results in 76 Copper coin (after deducting 9 Copper coin for a successful sale and 4 Copper coin for the listing fee).
If offered for 1 Silver coin 26 Copper coin, you would take home 1 Silver coin 7 Copper coin, 19 Copper coin more than the price the vendor offers (after paying a sales tax of 13 Copper coin, listing fee of 6 Copper coin)

Also, Why is it that when I do list something, and there is a tax, and say to be competitive, I remove my listed item and continue to re post it at the lowest ask, that i do not get my previous tax back?

Because they don’t want everyone relisting the moment their item isn’t the cheapest sell order.

5% is not a tax its a fee. the service you payed for is listing the item. If you want to re list again you have to pay again. Think of it as the cost to putting an ad.

Cancer is also a Zodiac sign.
