Belindas Greatsword orHow Anet trolled thiefs
Maybe(hopefully) thieves will be able to wield greatswords in the future.
Yes, I’ve played games where the assassin/stealth class were able to use 2 hand swords, and they were pretty awesome. (shadowblade – Daoc)
Why would a thief want a katana? They are thieves, not ninjas.
Currently playing Heart of Thorns.
The name thief is just a generic term, so A-net.
The thief has the role in the game as the stealths, acrobatic and/or shadow class.
So they can be played as: Assassins; Ninjas; Thiefs, or what ever.

The katanas (long swords 60cm+) were used by the samurais, the ninja version is a wakizashi (short version of katana 30-60cm). Samurais used a longsword (katana), a short sword (wakizashi) and a tantô (+/- a dagger 30cm-).
Thanks for the details. I know many saying Katana to the one and two handed version,
i think it is because you can wield a katana one handed(see Niten Ichiry?) and both havent a visual difference except for the length.

That is not even a katana it’s a nodachi/oodachi and it was obvious from the beginning. I like it that way =p.

I know ..:p
Been looking/waiting for a decent GS skin for my ranger since launch!
It was obviously a two-handed sword.
Also, why do you sign your name on every post?

Pretentious people love to do that.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
Meh, until thieves can dual wield 1h swords, I don’t have much desire for Katanas.

Could be worse…ever seen a post by ArrDee (usually on sPvP forums)? Ugh…
Anet only caters to Heavys. You should know that by now.

They’re Thieves so they would use anything they got their hands on as a weapon, so technically they should have access to everything.

That’s such nonsense. Greatsword is a popular weapon for all armor weights. Also the weapons in the store right now:
Kasmeer staff:
A guard COULD use this….
Braham weapons: ofc these are for heavy, he’s a guardian.
Marjory dagger: nope
Marjory axe: all weights
Rox shortbow: only medium.
Come on brah. Lets be real. The only class prejudice is against the poor necro and engi ;P
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.

So if I rob a chemistry plant, I’ll know how to make bombs/medicine/drugs?
The best you would be able to do with an unknown weapon is have some kind of clue how to use it. In most cases, the only way this would make sense in a game would be throwable items. How would you like a 600 gem item that you can throw once at your enemy?

Nice job picking a dumb comparison. If you wanna go that route then yes, a Thief can rob a ‘chemistry’ plant and he may or may not know how to use bombs/medicine/drugs, but if he didn’t he could learn, or just use them anyways and enjoy the fireworks. It can’t be too hard when the end result is destruction and disaster anyways, right? He’d klepto and use-on the spot- so many items he’d eventually get better with all of them. Anyone, regardless of their job could learn and use any form of weapon or tool and there would be no restrictions. So all classes should be able to use all weapons eventually.
The game has never treated “Thief” like a generic Japanese style romanticized figure of yore and has never given thieves a greatsword to use. I don’t see any relationship between the thief and a greatsword skin that happens to have stylistic roots in middle ages Japan.
That’s as far from trolling as you can possible get, without running into yourself on the other side.
Maybe what the OP means is that they would love to see thief weapons that share that motif (many of the weapon names are listed above in other posts).
edit: it’s always later that we think of the perfect response, which should have been:
If you want to call this trolling of thieves by ANet, then Nooooooo Dachi for youuuuuu.

I will just make a samurai look and wield the katana with that char.
A greatsword and stealthy sneaking around really doesn’t go well together…
Hi everybody,
After i saw Belinda’s Greatsword i laughing and crying.
The class that wish to have a katana(black one) since beta, was the thief.
And now they got one, Belinda’s GREATSWORD.
Good job, trolled every thief in the entire game(Assassins equilibrium the duration increase to a half second, was nice too), A-net you made my day^^.Best wishes

Given how they made the assassin outfit look like on a female human, if they ever make a japanese sword for thieves, it will most likely look like a riding crop anyhow.
Here it is on my ranger …
It was obviously a two-handed sword.

LOL yea I don’t get why some people have to type their username after every post when you can use an automated sig and you can use the see all messages by function anyway.

This sword is long enough to be called a tachi.
That makes it a greatsword.
Thieves are mostly rogues.
Rogues are supposed to be proficient in simple weapons (dagger, mace, club, etc ) plus the hand crossbow, rapier, sap, shortbow, and short sword.
You can put rapier and short sword in the same category within GW2’s context. And saps and clubs would be basically a maces. That leaves hand crossbowss – that seem to have been replaced by pistols – and maces.
Maybe you though of thieves as some sort of ‘light armor’ samurai or martial artist like D&D’s weapon master. Or a classical fiction ninja that would go around with a katana.
That’ll be a closer to a warrior, unless ANet decided to add to GW2 an equivalent to GW1’s secondary professions. Something like talking with the Warrior Trainer after level 80 with a thief, to get a set of 20 additional ‘pseudo levels’ (you are effectively still level 80 when it comes to gear and combat calculations, you simply unlock extra traits) 2 weapons, 5 “Specialized” traits, 5 utility skills and 1 elite to specialize your “thief” into a “subclass” that can use greatswords… call it… I don’t know… maybe something based on Iaido, like “Blink Fighter”, or just “Thief Warrior”.
I can tell you that along the Shadow Assassin outfit, it looks better on warriors, though, since they do not have fancy animations.
(edited by MithranArkanere.8957)
Katana’s are traditionally wielded two handed. Only two handed sword animation in the game are for greatswords. Therefore it became a greatsword and therefore it’s length becoming an odachi.
If they allowed a version to be wielded one handed, there be a players complaining that it’s being wielded wrong.

THIEVES are not NINJAS are not ASSASSINS
Thieves don’t need katanas, ninja stars, kunais, or hidden blades to be thieves.
A thief is no ninja and even ninjas usually used other weapons than an Odachi.¨¨
Ah, got ninja’d by Chrispy :-)
Anyway, another point: guys, characters running around with sado-maso armor and wielding an odachi just looks silly (just referring to those aweful female anorexia models you postet up there… aweful).

Thieves CAN be assassins, tho.
They are a mix of themes. One of them assassination which is more prominent in the Deadly Arts and Critical Strikes attribute lines.
Thieves could also use staves like hammers, to make quarterstaves, for their Acrobat line. For skills that mix badly with stealth (e.g. flashy jumps with forced reveals) but instead focus more in dodges.
And torches too, for acrobat-trick to use them to make juggling tricks with mostly condition damage.
The rifle also fits their theme for assassinations for long range sniping (e.g: taking out key targets from the battlements of keeps or tower in WvW), although such a long range weapon would need recharges, tales (a circle on your feet like with “On My Mark!”) and forced Revealed in their strongest skills to keep them in check, so they can’t just get away and snipe from afar over and over.
