Best mat to invest in for 500 jeweling patch?
Hmm would 500 JC be popular though? Ascended accessories are already extremely abundant, unless they add something special.

As somebody who only plays open world PvE and has 13 80s i still wait for that, since i still need a lot of that stuff.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

That’s more of an exception though. I doubt OP is going to heavily invest into JC mats just because there are a few out there who limit themselves to only play open world PvE.
Jc is probably going to be hit or miss since most people already have ascended trinkets.
I would look into the possibility of cooking 500, which is more likely to be much more popular since they will need to come up with some new ideas for food.
Yay for accountbound food that needs Vision Crystals to craft

I hope some time gated food. I like the idea.
so 1 person can’t craft 1 million of the same item and crash the market.
Which ones do you think will be in highest demand and will rise the most in price? I’ve recently been buying lots of orichalcum ore at 5s a pop, but I was wondering if there was something better I could be investing in.
Keep in mind though, that ori will most probably only be used to level from 400-500, it will have a short spike and thats it. The mats that will be used for the timegated crafting will keep in demand and high in price way longer.

There are more interesting items to invest in. Personally I am not wasting inventory space with them.

I haven’t invested in it. I cannot even get enough of it for my own needs.
What’s gonna spike when it comes out and stabilize later- Ori, all orbs, dusts, ectos a bit
What’s gonna increase permanently- silver, gold, platinum, mithril ( just a little bit though) , ruby orbs, t2-5 dusts.
People tend to have a myopic view of others’ play style. So when they say there will be no demand for ascended trinkets they just think about it from their perspective, but alot of people don’t do guild missions or fractles. So there will be a demand for ascended jewelry, it just won’t be as high as demand for ascended weapons and armor.
I wonder if there is any person that hasn’t invested in Platinum Ore as of now.

definately not platinum. There are a bunch of rich ore.
There will be too many miners for platinum to spike that much.

There are plenty of rich iron nodes as well and that didnt stop it from spiking massively during high demand.

I disagree with silver and mithril increasing in value much. If you check supply on the tp you will see that gold and platinum is in much less supply. As the demand for silver/gold/platinum/mithril is somehow regulated through the daily timegate for the xunlai ingot, i wouldnt really bother to invest into silver/mithril.
Concerning Orbs, I am not too sure they will rise too much. I suspect that too many people have stocked up on them over time (personally i bought thousands each last September already and since then many others did as well). You have to keep in mind that orbs most propably will only be used in leveling from 400-500. Their equivalent, t6 rare mats, didnt really spike during asc armor and weaponcrafting going live because everybody had enough of them stocked up for their own use.
Realistically, you only need 15 of each orb to discover all the trinkets, who doesnt have that in his collectible tab? Ruby orbs definately have alot less supply in peoples inventory because they are used as a popular upgrade component so there has been decent demand over time for them.
But the same goes for Opal Orbs, which is basically the only other orb that isnt hovering around vendor value. That is because it is used in crafting 3 legendary gifts (for the minstrel, the bifrost and the dreamer).
I think the orb investment is just a huge bubble and asc jeweling will not create enough demand for them to increase their value over a long period of time. I already listed all my orbs (except opal and ruby) around 5-6s. Orbs might spike that high but not due to honest demand but pre patch speculation, so i hope to sell them before patch already.
At the moment nearly all Exquisite Jewels are still available way under crafting value, so those are the ones I invested in mostly. Considering that you need 1 orb, 2 ori ingots and 1 ecto to craft one, especially Exq Chrysocola jewels (@32/37s) and Exq Passion FLowers @ 50/60s (crafting value of 3.5g), look quite tasty.
If not for speculative purposes, i would recommend to get at least 15 each of the exq jewels on buy order for your own consumption.
I still wonder if they will incorporate a dust sink. For that case, i invested into Luminous Dust as t4 always seems to be the bottleneck.

The biggest unanswered questions are what will the ratio of silver/gold/platinum needed to craft the Xunlai Electrum ingots (I have a funny feeling it may be a 20/20/10 ratio, since platinum is already needed for Darksteel, while silver and gold have no other use aside from Jeweler), and how exactly we’ll acquire Crystalline Ore. It may be that Crystalline Ore is refined from various lower-level dust or gemstones, so I do think investing a little into that (at least for your own use) is a good idea. Wanze’s suggestion of acquiring 15 Exquisite Jewels of each type is also a good one (although it may turn out that we end up needing just one Exquisite Jewel to craft the Ascended variant).
ANet has to find a balance between making Ascended Jewelcrafting appealing and not making it too expensive, since if it’s too hard to get, people will just continue to get their Ascended trinkets via Fractals/Laurels/Commendations and just not bother with r500 Jeweler at all.

If we assume that mithril is used in ecto refinement for xunlai then in the long term it will probably stabilize at a slightly higher price, but i agree they’re not worth investing in. Silver my be over supplied now but it’s only farmable in lvl 15-25? maps, the question is once the supply form stockpiles is used up will there be a large surplus of new silver? I would lean towards no. So in the long term i see silver setting at about 90c. As for orbs they’re pretty much useless now so people don’t notice that they accumulate them rather slowly through regular gameplay, but since most people will be wanting Bezerker stats ruby orbs will be the only ones to keep any real value after the rush to 500. My prediction is that the ascended recipes will require quit a few orbs to turn into T7 jewels with T7 dust or simply just a large quantity of them.
Your advice about Exquisite Jewels seems sound is something I didn’t consider, and is worth a look.

The problem with silver is that its consumption will be tied to the consumption of gold and platinum as well. Even if you need twice or 3 times as much silver as gold or platinum, those 2 will rise in price faster to a point where people cant afford them anymore.

Not disagreeing, Gold is a much better investment than silver still it’s worth keeping a couple stacks around for personal use at least. Platinum will certainly increase but i think there are enough platinum farmers already that it wont get too high.
Platinum (and Silver, to a lesser extent in the Borderlands) nodes are also fairly easy to come by in WvW. Gold is harder to find.
Is platinum really that desirable? I am drowning in so much platinum that I threw it at the Zephyrite trader.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
we see iron spike at 2.35.
possible for platinum to spike, but probably just caped since people will be getting extremely good gold/hour by mining platinum if it spiked.
I just think realistically it is easier for silver to double in price but not platinum. Since if people are getting extremely good gold per hour. Everyone will be mining them, just like how iron is capped at a price which give too good of gold per hour.
And we are talking about time gated material here, so a bit different than what happened to iron from 1 silver->2.35 and quickly fall.
It probably depend on the amount needed for each material. For example mithril is used in mass for deldrimore steel ingot. Not sure what is the prime material for xunlai electrum ingot.

silver, gold and platinum ore.
Then again, as self-disclosure, I have all three invested. And I more than likely will sell these off on other speculators.
I.e. the last time silver spiked was in January when people were expecting JC500. It went over 1.3 s if I recall.
I doubt this price is sustainable.

This.
Look. All they have to do is double the regular 20/10/20 bolt/square/ingot requirement (so that would be: 40 silver ingots, 20 gold ingots, 40 platinum ingots) and supply won’t be handle the demand within days. Prices would weeee similar to the insane silk debacle. I bet very few people want – or have the time – to farm 60’ish full nodes a day. It takes friggin forever to do that and it’s incredibly boring.
If price really rise that much, it’ll be like the orichalcum/ancient wood right after the ascended gear introduction, harvester making a killing.
I just think it is much easier for silver to double in price because even if silver double in price, the miner still wont’ be bother to waste time mining them. But platinum, people are already harvesting them for money, platinum are 1.8 right now. If it go up say 50% that’s 2.7 silver, there will be a lot more miner.
That being said, no one actually knows if silver demand will rise that much.
Does anyone think the Basic Ore Node Pack would have any effect? I doubt many people (relatively speaking) have it, but those players, especially if they have additional incentive to enter their home instance for watchwork sprockets, could have a supply that could limit how high silver and gold rise. Though, the more I type this, the less likely I feel this is….
Unrelated, but topics like this are very interesting to me, and I wish I saw more debates on expectations of the economy like this, though I feel that the official forum isn’t ideal because of the potential for players to read others say “I think X might go up”, then blindly buy X.
Crafting is designed for gear accessibility, not profit.
On ruby orbs, remember that players can buy trinkets with zerker stats already using laurels, so don’t expect demand to jump that high.
My guess is that as people level up we will see a bit of a jump in ori and a jump in the price of any exquisite jewel that is cheaper to buy than make.
I am also guessing that people have a few mithrilium in their bank and so there will be more of a spike on t2-4 mats as the time-gate will be bypassed, but that spike will be small as it’s mainly masochists like me who will be crafting up when JC500 comes.
One unanswered question is how they are going to allow jewelcrafters to make stats like Soldiers and Magi. If you like long shots invest in crests.

I rarely missed a daily and never a monthly. I just crafted my second ascended armor set and have like 7 asc weapons. I got most of my trinkets with laurels/commendations as I dont do much fractals.
I am short on Laurels all the time and i dont have infusions on all my gear yet.
If i could craft asc trinkets with only 5 laurels investment instead of 20/30/40, i would gladly do it.
I reckon they will introduce uncraftable exquisite jewels (soldier, shaman, etc) the same way they did with inscriptions/insignias, by salvaging them off exotic trinkets that have those stats.

At this point I only expect investing in JC mats to provide a good return if the eventual 500 patch introduces unique visible skins, such as backpieces.
Speculation: ArenaNet said something about legendary jewels a long time ago, this will probably require JC 500. Also precursor scavenger hunt/crafting can require JC 500 and/or Cooking 500.
Don’t forget crystals/shards/lumps. Less obvious how they might fit in JC500 and they might not make it at all, but many can be had for 1c over vendor by buy order, so risk is minimal. They’re not too hard to mine, but if you specifically wanted 250 emerald shards quickly….well, you might be willing to pay. Nuggets cost more, but go into forging for silver doubloons, so there is another market for selling them if nothing comes of it. Disclosure: my personal guild cave is very sparkly.

That’s why I invested in orbs/crystals loooong ago.
Great long-term investment because:
-inability to farm them quickly
-semi rare/rare acquisition
-reasonable future opportunities
ignoring opportunity cost of course. If you include it it’s probably a terrible investment. I probably have +400g invested in orbs/crystals

are you sure this time? or is it like your leather investment lol?
I bought about 2k of each vendor priced crystal and listed them for a nice profit right away so they aren’t taking up my bank space. Who knows if they will be used and how high they will go, but it is hard to go wrong with a vendor priced material investment.

My leather investment paid off well since I stored it in an account I only use for storage. And that +100g I used I wouldn’t have used to elsewhere, so the opportunity cost for myself is pretty minimal. If I intended to flip, it’s a different story.
I would made about 300g if I sell all the material I stocked for this silver/leather for this event. But I didn’t.
Getting too lazy. I can honestly say selling things isn’t fun, you can only sell 10 stack before you get selling error. I got burned out selling 500 stacks of sprocket before, sold them at 90 copper I believe. Could have made more if I kept them longer. That is probably why I spent 1000 gold on salvaging ecto instead of greens for leveling magic find.
for jewel crafting I suppose platinum/silver/gold, and t2-t6 orb also have a possible increase either for legendary or ascended. Not sure which out of those are better though.

I personally went for blue and yellow orbs, shards, and its ilk. Reason is, they drop randomly and there is a chance anet will do a recipe that will require an unreasonable amount of some of these. But most important, it was possible to buy them for VENDOR prices for a long time. If they end up being a flop, I dont care, I literally wont lose out.
